- Riding on the success of Richard Fleischer's epic, The Vikings, this low-budget offering starring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier played it light and humorous. In this particular scene, the Vikings (led by Widmark) are attempting to escape the palace of evil Prince Mansuh (Poitier) when they stumble upon the royal harem.

I always get this film mixed up with The Vikings movie.
the "dark ages" is term use by historians on VI and VII century becouse of very little number of written sources, not becouse "cultural stagnation"
Aren’t they very closely related.
This scene says nothing about ancient history, and everything about contemporary social attitudes towards rape, at least as they existed in the 1960s when this movie was made. Boys will be boys, right? And those women aren't really screaming in terror, they're just playing hard to get! No way in hell could this scene be filmed today - not even Mel Brooks could get away with it.
I thought it was stupid. A stupid move on the part of the vikings(in real life they likely would have had more since than to do that). they should have lad low.
Actually, I though Al Mansur was a dignified and even somewhat sympathetic character. I never considered him dumb.
Something tells me this scene wouldn't be made today.

@Almanzzor The real moors came from yemen and they had Cushite as well as semitic Ancestory. They went in to north & west Africa and mixed heavily with the African populations that was there B4 they came to africa. Berbers are not African ppl. they are of west asian origin. The white arab is of north semitic & indo aryan origin and came later in Arabian history.. the real Arabians were very dark. Berbers came to Africa B4 the Arabs thats all. Berbers didn,t really like Arabs ..

Pretty sexist if you ask me...
They had the fun adventurous music playing when the vikings were in the haram, but in the movie when Sidney Poitier (the Moor) ran up inside of the viking womans chamber they had this evil, dangerous music playing. Not so fun then.

@Almanzzor Egyptians came from the southern sudan they were Black Africans just like West Africans.Proto Egyptians came from the beginning of the Nile River there were no Semites or Asiatics in those areas if fact Egyptians hated them. Moors have Nubian Ancestory that mixed with semites in arabia. Egyptians say in their own text that they came from the South & thats south of upper Egypt from the areas of modern day Uganda, Kenya & Tanzania.

@Almanzzor Arabs & Berbers are North African now, because the Black Africans that were there B4 them went back to the interior(South) just like the Egyptians did when their country was invaded. they fled to Nubia & further South. Those Black Africans that stayed behind did mix with both Berber & later the Arab ppl..

the Moors were Black Africans who conquered all of Portugal, Spain, and southern France in 711ad.
They ruled for almost 8 hundred years all of southern europe. i would say they put an end to the dark ages of europe with culture & civilization.
the Moorish general who conquered southern europe was called Tariq ibn Ziyad.
there are many europeans from the region of Portugal ,Spain ,France & Italy who can trace their roots to Moorish Africa.
