The Long Ships - Mare of Steel

- Riding on the success of Richard Fleischer's epic, The Vikings, this low-budget offering starring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier played it light and humorous. Having been captured by the evil Mansuh (Sidney Poitier) Rolfe and co. (Richard Widmark, Russ Tamblyn et al) find themselves in dire straits when they are forced to ride the "Mare of Steel."

Man oh man I LOOOVED this film growing up. Fond memories of watching it with my dad!
Not seen this scene for at least 50 years but I remembered it!
When I saw it as a kid on TV it freaked me out and I turned it off. For about a week I couldn't get the mental image of sliding down that blade out of my head.
Me too... And now look at today's movies.. 😞
Quite a horrible death, being cut in half between the legs, or... other parts... Then, you pray that the executioner already cut your head before falling down, and the spikes are there to finish you off if somehow you survived.
Yes, I agree. Today they would have shown the body being sheared in half, with all the blood and gore that entails.
I saw this as a young kid on the Saturday morning movies, years went by and I remembered that slide but assumed I imagined it because it seemed so outlandish as I grew older. Today, I finally found it by freak chance.
Watched this on 4:30 movie with my mom back in the early 70's. She said she would install the Mare of Steel on the stairs if I insisted on sliding down the bannister 😂😂😂
MasterH8: Lol, I was gonna write the exact same thing? This really is an unforgettable scene. One thing that stuck with me was the look on the guards face!
Back in the early 90s as a kid, I'd stay up every Saturday evening at my grandparents house and watch these classic movies until the butt crack of dawn. No words can describe how much I miss my childhood. Growing up sucks.
Me too!!! I remember this exact part, but I could never find it again until today. Many movies have been shown and shown and shown over and over again, but not this one, I don't know why?!
I had that same experience down here in Oz. 65 years old now.
A terrifying memory from my childhood. Great movie.
Same here......It haunted me for days, really.
Yep. Never forgot this.
OMG, I watched this as a kid in the 70's and it gave nightmares for years.
60s
it gave me nightmares as a kid .im 60 now and still wince as his knackers hit the blade
Maxwell Smart: "that's the second biggest Mare of Steel I've seen this month!"
Low budget, but with beautiful sets all handcrafted and real. No CGI.
Love this movie. Cheesy and historically vague. The prelude always stuck with me, about collecting all this gold to create the greatest bell of solid gold. Great fun.
Quite right as history it was crap but a kids we loved it.
I remember this one, the same music over and over and over and over and over again xD
Still better than any of the rides at my local Six Flags 🙄
One of these should be installed at every theme park in the world!
Would really cut down on complaints.
@@kennethmorris8593 LOL 😂
We need one of this devices in my country... For the corrupt Politicians... 😂

The First honour should go to Dr. Fauci.
"Your turn, Viking . . ."
Too Cool!
One of Richard Widmarks BEST
Sidney Poitier passed away on January 6, 2022. R.I.P.
i remember that scene from when i was a little kid and i never forgot the horror of it, you could almost feel sliding down that blade , uuuuugh gut wrenching indeed
Same lol... but didn't remember them sliding down I thought they just lopped of their head
"gut wrenching" I see what you did there .... 👍
Great classic clip - I always liked his movies - may he R.I.P. passed at 93 Info LATimes
I liked the huge Bell tumbling down in that particular scene !!’

He was one hell of an Actor
With this film began a lifelong fascination with the Vikings.
This scence was coldblooded and unforgettable
It shows how cold blooded and cruel the black man is in his native habitat.
@@jonothandoeser That's interesting since the Vikings are in someone else's habitat and bring nothing but hatred and destruction...As a matter of fact...The white man has NEVER COME IN PEACE...Only in hatred...
@@freein2339 The Vikings are captives, abducted by nefarious means by the barbarous and heartless Moor! See how little life means to the Moorish savage? How shameful.
@@jonothandoeser I will repeat what I said...The white man has NEVER COME IN PEACE...any intereaction with the Vikings and Moors was because of the invasions by the Vikings on the Moors....a little more study of history will tell you that...
Remember watching this as a kid and being absolutely scared shitless. 😱
I have an eerily similar experience to many other commenters. I flicked the tv on when I was about 10. I saw only this scene and then turned it off. Now, 30 years later I can still remember the scene very clearly including the camera angles, the music, the victim’s face and much of the dialogue. It’s quite a disturbing memory. But I convinced myself that I had imagined it, because it’s such an implausible and sadistic turn of events. Reading other comments with an almost identical experience is mind-blowing.
I agree gruesome as it is I cannot see it would not work in practice. It reminds me of various "medieval" instruments of torture actually dreamed up by travelling showmen in the 19th century.
No way out. The long ships and the Bedford incident are three masterpieces that sidney poitier and richard widmark did together.
I thought the Moor leader looked familiar, Thanks!!!
@@johnganshow5536 no one played a crazy psycho like richard . One movie from the 50s he pushed a wheelchair bound lady down some stairs then giggled about it lol.
I've been trying to remember the name of the "Bedford Incident" for awhile now... thanks!
@@kennethmorris8593 How about this movie where he plays an absolute unashamed racist who brutalizes Poitier? EDIT: realized I was describing the movie "No Way Out"
One thing and may be more are wrong here , at that time black people were not free . In many movies directors don`t pay attention at this very important issue . When I see this I stop watching it , I just can`t , except it , it looks very unreal !
I remember this scene as a kid, and it gave me the horrors to imagine what the poor sod being sacrificed was experiencing based on the expressions of the onlookers, being sliced, diced, and impaled by the mare of steel.
I can see the Mare being marketed by "K-Tel" or "Po-Peel" - it slices, it dices, it purees and it can make Julian fries - cut your onions without tears and it cleans up easily!!!!!!!
You too, eh? I can remember it like it was yesterday, its sheer horror. The other great one was after they were ship wrecked and fought off the first wave attack thinking it was okay,, then that ominous sound of hundreds of hooves stomping acorss the desert and the look on the Vikings' faces.
Me too watched it in early seventies around ten years old, violent film loved it
I remember this just as you do. It's the only bit I remember of the film.
I know, without any special effects or any of the artificial terror-inducing tricks of today's movies, just working on our imaginations-
One of the more memorable of Richard Widmarks movie scenes
Wonderfully authentic.
3:05-' Join the army in the service of the Queen' they said
'You'll travel , meet new friends' they said
' It will broaden your horizons ' they said
I loved this film as a kid ,and I always remembered that rousing main theme in the score.
One of my faves from long long ago. I'ce never seen the soldier ride down the blade. This clip is as I remembered it.
Remember this from way way back seeing it on the Telly one Saturday afternoon. This scene is what all the kids at school were talking about on Monday morning, it definitely made an impression, just of the thought of it gives you an uncomfortable feeling in the crown jewels.
ouch! man i forgot how painful that looked. I remember a substitute teacher bringing this in one day. stayed with me for life
loved this scene. horrified but compulsive as a kid... thanks for the post
Yes. Funny. I remember it well. I guess it had quite an impact on us as kids.
Great movie. I remember the Mare of Steel, and the Bell ringing scene.
Wow! I cant believe I actually found this scene! I never knew the name of the film, however, I did remember the phrase Mare of Steel. It still gives me the heebie-jeebies. I saw this movie when I was a very young boy (late 60s), and although it probably seems cheesy by todays standards, it disturbed the shit out of me when I was little.
I hear you... :-)
@@gingerfellah5665 I noticed when Richard Widmark walks past the mare there's no sign of a body
@@davidfrost2819 Me2
Same for me. Saw it at a drive in. Great movie for it's day. But what impressed me most was the theme song!Somewhere around here, in a stack of 45's, I have it.
Wow, me too! I've remembered this scene for decades and could not place the movie. It was cool to see it again,
I saw this on tv when my grand dad was not home and thought I made it up!
My favorite part of that is how they have a bed of nails to make sure that the two halves of you that reach the bottom get tortured as well.
PS the device is unlikely to actually cut you in half. Simple gravity would not get through the bones. Still not a day at the beach tho. My sister gave the best comment on this movie: Sid looked really hot back then.
Other holes in the movie: That bell is not going to ring encased in cement like that.
Sydney Poitier looks magnificent as a Moor.
3:10
"Go then. Ride the Mare of Steel."
And you can see the guy to the right of him is trying to keep an expressionless face, but inside he's thinking, "Oh, thankyouthankyouthankyou it wasn't me!"
been for ever since I saw this as a kid and was trying to figure out what it was!!!!!!! Cool, cool, cool, thanks for uploading it, and thanks for UA-cam!
It's taken me 50 years to find out what this film was called and to relive the nightmare from when I saw it as a kid! not as bad now as it was then!!!!
Yes I've watched The Long Ships in Rarotonga at the Victory Theatre during the seventies
Etched in my memory cells since I was 12. And that's half a century ago.
As a boy of 7, nothing prepared me for this, absolutely nothing. Getting to "Brass Tax" or Getting down to cases, this Hollywood that I grew up with, is not the Hollywood of today. Something very tangible has been lost from the past. I owe my strength of courage, because of the rawness of such movies like this "Masterpiece". And I have a ton of other attributes that are innate to me, because of such movies like this movie, period. Bless Mr. Richard Widmark, and Mr. Sidney Poitier. Long Live "The Long Ships"
Read the original novel. The film doesn't do it any justice whatsoever. The book is incredible.
@@TheSteveRobinson If wishes were horses, I would fly. In all seriousness, at the present time I have to much on my plate, sort to speak. While the weather holds, I have to have a ton of yard sales in order to get rid of 90% of all of my late husband's stuff, he was such a hoarder, and would turn a room into storage shed, and it would become so full of junk, that you could not enjoy the room at all, or out buildings, for that manner because there was only a single path only wide enough for a person to walk through. I remember seeing this clip (not the entire movie) when I was about 14 years old and living in London, the scene I have always remembered is when Manush asks Aminar to select a man whom she asks do you believe in Allah! the rest was chilling and it stuck in my mind for years I have always wanted to know the name of this movie and only today I found it.. Thanks for uploading.
Saw this almost 40 years ago never forgotten it
Great way to encourage loyalty among your guards! Palace coup in 10...9...8...7...
He was to perfect playing the Moors King 💯 wow!
WOW. We're talkin' some heavy S & M here !!!
I rember this scene from my childhood.
I saw this on TV when I was perhaps six or seven years old. It burned itself into my brain. I watched Ben Hur recently and i was reminded of it. Took me a while to find what film it was.
5:26 that is a very small blood stain considering the guard must have been filleted sliding down that blade, spilling blood and guts all over the place. Some fast cleaning too.
This gave me nightmares as a kid. Not just the slide but the picking process.
I remember this scene as a small child and have been trying to find the film for years!
I was 13 when this came out and couldn't get that image out of my head for years! It's like the eyeball slicing scene from "un Chien Andalou" ...unforgettable , to say the least! .... Just sayin'!
I t hought the "mare" was pretty scary too when I saw this thing years ago..... But there was one rather funny scene... They were looking for that huge golden bell..... And there's a scene where this enormous, solid-gold bell slides down a hillside into the ocean..... And it floats.
Great film!
As a kid at 9 year old I was like Awsome !!
This scene really scared me as a kid
Are you still a kid 14 years since ?
It was etched into my brain.
Ditto 55 years later I still remember it.
Me too!
And me!
Yes, but that guard wouldn't have the guts to go down the Mare of Steel a second time.
Or the balls!

I thought this was So Weird as a Kid seeing Richard Widmark go from a Cowboy to a Viking!
I remember this scene as a kid born in the 70's. The utter barbaric nature of the seen stayed with
To this day, happy I found it. Thanks.
Scene. Sorry.
To this day i remember seeing that scene with the guy sliding down the razor sharp horse tail as a kid...
The actor was apparently later the star of Rising Damp Leonard Rossiter
An all around excellent film.
I think I was 7 when I saw this on TV.
Două mari legende : Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier!
The Long Ships and the Vikings are two movie I get mixed up often. However, who could not appreciate Richard Witmark and Sidney Poitier together in film.
I remember this movie and this scene from my childhood memories. I thougt for quite a long time how gruesome death on the mare of steel must had been.
Jim Bowie looked just like his Viking ancestor.
When I was a kid our County Fair had one of these, my Dad wouldn’t let me ride it, said it didn’t look safe
Richard widmark. Top. Vk. Seen film. Vk 19. 3. 23. . Thanks. Long ships.
The should have given the Mare of Steel an outer coating of Teflon - for a smoother, less irritating....cut.
Evil yes, but that James Brown hairdo.....
is to die for.
Yet another classic
If I watched this as a kid, I would never ride in a slide all my life.
Watching it on Cinevault (Roku) right now.
As a direct descendant of Vikings, I enjoyed the film, but it is riddled with artistic license and historical inaccuracies.
Fun movie.
Skål!
One of my favourite films as a kid, but I will stick to roller coasters thanks whether I believe in Alla or not😁😁😁,Kirk Douglas movie "The Vikings" another great.Richard Widmark a great actor of that era, westerns especially. Not seen this film for years and dvd hard to find.
I love this movie. I bought the 45 of the "The Long Ships"--one side is with orchestra, the other side (Part 1) is a great piano version of the theme played both all the time in the 70s...and as for the Mare of Steel--every time it's super chilling to imagine....worse than chalk screeching on a blackboard!
I loved this movie.
I remember seeing this as a kid and thinking, "That's GOT to smart!!"
What an imagination of the person who came up with this Mare of Steel.
I was a young boy when I saw this scene and pictured in my mind they and I would have felt and looked like afterwards.
Great action movie and one of my favorites of the time.
Don't quote me I think it was dreamed up by a Hollywood designer as in use it would not be very practical. There are a couple of supposedly mediaeval "torture" artefacts around which were actually invented by 19th century showman for travelling fairs.
Second of three times Widmark and Poitier went toe to toe. The other two were "No Way Out" (1950) and "The Bedford Incident" (1965)
I never forget this scene i was 9 years
I've been trying to learn the name of this move for literally 50 years. I remember being like 4 or 5 and seeing this scene. It branded itself onto my brain. But I never knew the name!!! Thank you!!!
... I'm 64 and have the Exact Recollection. Seams to me the "Brave" Rider was having an affair with the "Lady that chose him. Can Any-one Quantify that for Me?
This is an adventure movie.. not a horror movie. THe best moment is her asking him if he believed. Tarentino can have at this when he grows up.
deaddoc: I can't understand how they could have made the Mare of Steel blade - I would think that if they made it sharp enough to cut, it would be so slender that it would fold down under the weight of the condemned.
Moor guard - I should have called in sick...lol
I remember when I was in junior school our RE teacher mentioned a slide similar to this which was used by some ancient civilization e.g. the Romans for purposes of execution. There was a rather sensitive girl in the classroom at the time who had actually passed out prior to that upon hearing a story about a Cyclops getting stabbed in the eye, and we were amazed when she didn't faint upon hearing that.
Men today fear on command !
Even from what cannot be seen !
I saw this when I was about 10, in 1978. It was horrible! 😭 I couldn't imagine how horrible that death must have been! I was hoping that it was relatively quick! 😔
Richard Widmark movies are great
I know this Film with Richard Widmark and Sidney Portier.
Its a confused Story, but i like it.
I wish i can watch the whole movie again. The german title is totaly different 😊
Thanks alot for uploading.
Best regards from Austria 🇦🇹
I remember watching this as a young boy, gave me nightmares.
I first saw this in 1965 at the old movie theatre in Penshurst, Sydney, Australia. If my memory serves me correctly it was a double bill with Siege of the Saxons. As just a boy I loved the film but this scene was scary. To make it worse the Mare of Steel was probably a based on a true device.
So good 👍 movie
Disneyland used to have a ride like that.
! No fricking Viking would flinch or turn away from that. 😆
This really takes balls .....😅
Must have taken guts to climb it..
