The Long Ships - Golden Bell

- Riding on the success of Richard Fleischer's epic, The Vikings, this low-budget offering starring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier played it light and humorous. Having found the Mother of Voices (a gigantic golden bell) the Vikings and the Moors attempt to transport it to their ship.

This scene haunted me for years as a child. Very memorable movie.
I like how the solid gold bell floats when it hits the water.
Richard widmark, the most unconvincing viking ever!
The Golden Bell that floats. I pointed that out to my parents when I was 4. LOL!
Except it was not floating. The bell was large enough that its underside was reating on the surface of the underside of the ground, the bottom of the water.
The theme song to this classic movie was so beautiful. It came out on 45, with the title:
"The Long Ships Pt.1" and the flip side was Pt. 2. I lost the 45 years ago. Too bad no one remember this beautiful score.
Actually, the huge, glorious bell now sits on a stone plaza in the ancient Montenegrin town of Budva. Didn't realize it was there until we walked past it (May 2019) and I recognized it instantly, as my mind's eye was cast back 55 years to when I first experienced this awesome movie scene
Omg. Well spotted. What a classic piece of film history. I’m looking for the cannon now out of “The Pride and the Passion”. Any ideas?
@@GayorgVonTrapp No ideas, friend, except for the one you just planted. That suggestion sounds like an interesting side-project, thanks.
@@santacruz01pca Let’s find it
I saw the Mare of steel the other day in Tabrizunnahfaliti, Uzbekistan. They were just wiping it down so I was just a bit late.
"55 years."
We hear you, mon ami. Adventure movie geeks until they pull the sheet over our face and carry us to the morgue. Vaya con Dios.
I remember watching it with the old man as a kid!
Widmark was almost 50 when he made this. Tough bugger.
Haha I've been looking for this for 45 years or so. I was horrified back then age 10? Now it looks hilarious lol lol....
Thanx for posting this film. It may not be correct in every detail but it is a wonderful piece of escapeism. I loved it.
SYDNEY POTIER should have gotten a OSCAR for this role.
Wow. Not a miniature? Amazing..
@MyrddinwyIIt My favorite line is when Sidney Poitier says, "Then we shall take the viking girl, and if you play me false in any way, she shall be the first to feel the kiss of steel." He puts extra syllables into the word "first".
The first time I saw this movie was during my second year of college. My roomate, noting how I liked the "Mare of Steel" Scene, pointed out the Bell Scene with a bored expression: "Do you want me to tell you what's going to happen next, or do you want it to be a surprize?". He claims I laughed for 10 minutes by the clock. A moment ago, watching this video, I did the same all over again. Thanks for the laugh
Fun movie to watch!
That heavy bell of metal flotes extraordinary well on the water at the end! xD
so did the titanic
classcic Movie! one thing--that Bell was solid Gold. no way that Bell would float on water. It would have sank to the bottom. " Vikings".
Great fun film, although the mare of steel scene used to frighten me as a kid.
I should hope so 😂
Maybe trump will bring back the mare of steel 😧
I love this movie.
Loved this film. I was hoping someone posted the whole thing seeing it's hard to find these days.
Just love his comment afterwards.
Sidney P looked pissed !
I liked how this bell seemed to carry on ringing to blazes even half submerged in the sea. Ever tried playing a double bass in a paddling pool? We did in the Navy,
I was looking for the scene when the Vikings stumble into the harem. It has got to be in the top 10 Politically Incorrect movie scenes of all time!
BONG!!!!!!!!!
I remember the battle attack scene of this movie, as a kid back in the 60s. hold..hold..erm, nevermind..no defense 😆
I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid, but two scenes remain in my memory. This isn't one of them. The first is of course the Mare of Steel, but the other takes place shortly before this one: the Vikings finally locate the Mother of Voices, high atop a cliff, and climb up to claim it. Inside the tower they go, only to find a small golden bell the size of a football hanging off a rope. Disgusted, someone grabs it angrily and hurls it away...
You know what happens next. :)
+merloon
Yes. I remember this scene - good-one.
Man, if you remember that then search youtube for the theme tune from this movie - the hairs on your arms will stand!
'The Long Ships Movie Theme (1963)'
K3KCT No need to search for that one; it's burned into my memory already.
Only Richard Widmark goes into the tower and hurls the small bell. And he should be deaf after that.
This was not a low budget film.Look at all the extras in costumes and the fine cast.
I always felt sorry for those Vikings who got yanked off the cliff.
This film was on Five here a few months back.
Just watched it on my planner.
Was a very long film but an OK adventure.
I give The Long Ships a 5 out of 10.
The HD quality was very good.
Though sound quite poor only being mono.
So had to set my Denon to 7.1 stereo.
Remember when your folks asked you, if your friends were all jumping off a cliff, would you jump too? Tell them, "I would if we were all chain-ganged to a massive golden bell." LOL
This bell is still in Budva in Old town
The bell doesn't have to float, the water depth is shallow where it lands, it's patently obvious. I knew that when I first saw it in the movies as a child, knew it when I saw it again, here, 40-odd years later.
Incidentally, the bell used in this scene is actually made of solid 18 carat gold, smelted and melted for the movie then melted-down again at the end, made into trinkets for the crew. I know this to be an absolute fact.
You very naughty people, have you no respect for those wonderful old movies? Perhaps a thousand lashes will make you change your mind? Mare of Steel for youze - balls-first.
+K3KCT One flaw, Gold easily dents, and yet that bell, which I assume weighs several tons, falls over sharp rocks and cliffs and does not get a scratch?
+newalm
Right, my friend; at the end the bell doesn't get a scratch, it's perfect - it's a perfect bell-end..
+K3KCT YOUR MEAN!!
talking of patently obvious!..... :)
Naughty? I think you like to be spanked by large Plump Hungarian women don’t you? 🤣🤣🤣
How do you like Sidney's 1960's Motown doo?
It’s on point 👍🏿
How did Richard swim all the way from Morocco to Norway?
Sidney Poitier regretted making this film he is reportedly to have said.
I tried to see if they have the scene where they just found out the girl( the Viking princess) was still alive and then the bell rang out. I always like that sound effect at that point.
hola m podrias pasar el link para ver la pelicula completa x fas m encanto y kisiera verla de nuevo xfa gracias
This is very loosely based on the novel of the same name by Frans bengtssson. One of my 20 all time favourites.
u pozadini ostrvo sveti nikola, havaji, budva,a ovo zvono se danas nalazi ispred starog grada kao turisticka atrakcija.. inace,po ovom glumcu se plaza brijeg od budve prozvala ricardova glava..
you know why the bell doesn't sink, it's in shallow water right against the rocks. ive been to the exact locationwhere this was filmed , back in 1986 and all around the water is very shallow, never deepens. regards.
Eu o assisti na sessão Coruja há muitos anos atrás...
@firefox8192 He thought it was complete crap and almost apologized for appearing in it. Me? As a teenager I loved it!
It’s a great movie as good as the first film a bit tongue-in-cheek but a good film a modern Viking film would be good
Starting at 0:58, a solid gold bell FLOATING on the water - I don't think so.
@easyscore Yes, and I loked them even more a year later in "The Bedford Incident".
where can i get a DVD of this movie ASAP!
@deusirae76 Actually The Long Ships was originally a duo of Swedish books known as "Röde Orm" (The Red Serpent) that was realeased in the 40's.
The bell didnt float it was in the shallows
hmmm ... how is it possible that the bell is heavy like gold BUT float on water xD
need that kind of material.
still - really good movie ^^
Delícia este filme!!
Hahahaha🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Balsa wood w/ gold paint
LMFAO
hollow !
Please repost the "Mare of Steel" scene.
why is the Gold bell floating??
doh!
did anyone survive?
I hated The Vikings. It was boring as hell. This movie was much more enjoyable and satisfying. Love the ending where Richard Widmark tells the king of another lost treasure, while Oskar Homolka is laughing his ass off. Always brings a smile to my face.
yeah, but they SHOULD have had horns on their helmets!
The floating Bell, transform this epic Epos into a B-Movie. I realy wish they jad use a sinking one.
Same with "Gravity", this one scene(ykwim) ruined the whole movie, A little Bit.
Seriously folks... the movie should have ended right here.
"And so they learned the great bell was made not of gold but of styrofoam, and they had wasted their time. Just as the producers had wasted their time making this movie, and you, o viewer, just wasted your your money at the box office." THE END
At least it would have been a better ending than Monty Python and the Holy Grail!
When I saw this as a kid it didnt disappoint ... and it still doesnt. No politically correct woke bullshit here
@bridgeape60 -1963
BUDVA
The viking kings daughter is totally hot!

Reverse diversity
Not real gold either.
