This brings back memories for me. I had an ‘82 280zx turbo in high school and college. They are fun cars. Can’t wait to see the final result! It’s still a great looking car after all these years.
Your editing keeps getting better and better! Great job Sarah. It’s sucks you’re getting some water leaks, but I’m sure that will be an easy fix if you get some fresh weatherstripping on it.
I was warned and I stayed. Anyway, if you're going to strip your car down, I'd recommend having lots of small zip lock bags and a Sharpie on hand. It's gonna be a pain to put it all back together without knowing what goes where. I hope to see this turn into a full on restoration lol.
Assuming the rear hatch seals aren't leaking, the water could have come from the rear shock towers. You could seal over the hatch with some tape, and spray water over the hatch, and check for water. Then spray in wheel wells, and check for water.
Little idea for the next time you wash your car by hand: start on the top and only move to the bottom when everythings fine and clean above. Because then the dirt isn't able to make the parts you cleaned before dirty again. Also small stones from under your car can be in your towel and make scratches into the car when you want to clean the other parts

Try some shin etsu grease on the ttop seals and rubber moldings. It's supposed to hydrate the rubber and make it puff up a bit. Worked wonders on my 84 z31
You should check out seam sealer (brush on or squeeze) I used that back when I was working on classic mustangs to prevent rain and water especially dealing with the older windows 🤙💯🔥

Just a heads up not hateing just helping, when you wash it would be easier to start from the top and end at the bottom (roof to wheels) so that way when you go to rinse off the car the muddy dirt doesn't get on what you have already cleaned, this is more for after you paint it, but non the less you did a good job, keep it up :)
I appreciate the genuine kindness! I actually worked at a high end paint reconditioning facility so I am aware of this method. I simply wanted to test for t top leakage and make it a bit cleaner to spot rust easier. Wasn’t going for a full detail or anything. That, rust seems soo minimal. The spots to look at on Z cars is behind the rear tires in the wheel well and in the frame underneath. Your trunk floor looks to be in great shape as well so the rust on your car is not a lot to worry about from what I could see. I had 10 year old the cars that were rusted in half so yours looks way better than what you would see in Pennsylvania
Im glad mine doesn't have t-tops. But it definitely has alot more rust damage.

The door has surface rust thats easy to fix... but the rust near the window looks like its eating your metal away.

vintagerubber.com/datsun-nissan/280-zx/ makes weatherstripping for these ol' 280ZX's. No other place sells T-Top weatherstripping for 280ZX's. Hope this helps! 👍
That car: Just get the running gear working good so you can drive it. Unless you want to dump a bunch of $$, it might not be worth chasing all the rust. You will most likely get into another nicer car sooner than later. But, good wash job.

I feel this video so hard xD I have an 83 280zx and it has it's fair share of rust as well. T-tops and front windshield leak and the rear hatch until I found a pantera style hatch to replace it. There was just sooo much dirt on the car. Washing it off I was able to identify a lot easier what was rust and what was just 30 years of dirt 😂😭

They start off comfortable. And as they slowly ride up they become less and less comfortable. What you don’t see is how many times I had to pull them down 🤣
