I live in northern Sweden and honestly it's not that bad during the winter, like yeah it's cold and you have to shovel snow but some people in these comments make it seem like its impossible when it really isn't. Honestly the windy rain/snow mixed winters in the UK are more annoying cause you get wet and cold, in Sweden you basically only get cold if you're not wearing enough clothes. "There's no bad weather, only bad clothes" is a common saying in Sweden and it's true :P

That sounds so wonderful and different! I'm in Queensland, Australia, where summer is over half the year, and winter is an evergreen blip. Blink and you miss it, so I enjoy every second of the cooler weather (down to 16oc at midday and 0 at midnight). Sweden sounds like such a lovely experience.

I live in the northern part of Sweden and yes the winter is dark and cold but it's not as bad as some comment's say. You can do a lot of stuff during the winter like skiing, ride snowmobile, ice fishing and so on. I think winter time is kind of relaxing and you can always go on vacation to charge you batteries if you have to. The summer in Sweden is the best in the world. The smells, the sound of birds and animals, lazy days in the summer heat. I think you did a great choice.

On the few occasions that I’ve been in those home-buying scenarios, I have a ritual right before placing the first offer: I stop to do a hard dive on “counting my blessings” and being deeply grateful for my life in that current moment. I sit with that for a while and then say to myself: “I am about to ride an emotional rollercoaster that’s out of my control. Thankfully, if I lose out on the property, it won’t impact my current amazing life. Worst case…. I’m back to ‘square one’, where blessings abound and I still have my savings.” Things have a way of working out.

In Sweden the asking price is not an asking price at all. It is a starting price. Everything nearly always goes for more, sometimes much more. If something needs a lot of work you could be the sole bidder because construction is insanely expensive so that puts people off. Good luck.

The winters are long, they are also beautiful and the stars are everywhere on clear nights. There is a great sense of freedom with all the space around you, the nature, wildlife, lakes and mountains. The houses are built for the cold, Swedish homes are usually warm inside, the coldest I ever been iinside a house were the winters I spent in Ireland. The community up here is great, good neighbours are important. Mosquitoes aren't really an issue as long as there is a bit of open land around the house so there can be a bit of a breeze. Things to be mindful of (since you aren't used to colder countries). Be aware that country roads with big hills will be very fun driving in the snow. Also, make sure that your driveway isn't too long - snow shoveling is not fun after the first couple of times. If your driveway is long, you will probably need a snow blower, snow plow etc. Make sure your driveway isn't too steep, or you may have to park at the end of the road whenever it snows.

I remember the admonishment from my sister when I went to bid on a house that I was enamored with - ‘what are you thinking’ ?! In my case the house was big and so much work, I think for you the reality of Swedish winter would be daunting. The pleasure of a low price is forgotten long before the pain of so much continuous work. Find someplace warmer and easier for family to visit. Good Luck!

a tip for ya, in Sweden if a property is up for say 550 000 sek and you really want it then put in an offer 600 000 but only if they take the property off the market. That way you avoid bidding wars. Always go 50-100 000 sek over the asking price in order to get it and often they accept and take it off the market. Also in Hemnet put the search on oldest property, because if something been up for sale for a long time you can go under price and get a better deal :)

When I got bid out of a place I have later found out some had sewer failure or a well failure that would have cost a bundle to get fixed right after buying the property. So always keep the price in mind that you need to do a real inspection run the shower for more than a minute, flush the toilets and get a good look at the roof even if you use binoculars to look at it. Something will come up but if you can identify it before hand it is helpful. Remember on a long drive way they are great but you will need to plow it out yourself or hire someone to do it.

I have to tell you, I believe a lot of times those bids are not real that they have. They know what your limit is because the realtors do talk to each other and they will do the bidding wars just to get you to go up to your limit. My husband and I went through that and we did the same thing you did by stopping fairly close to our limit. A couple days later they called us saying the other people pulled out and it did make us believe that it was not a real bidding war. So we told them that we were no longer interested and then we watched the property sit for another little while. Then we went back and offered them their beginning asking price again and they took it. We got the house and we were very happy about it but at the same time we were angry at the feeling of being manipulated or at least they tried to manipulate us. Of course that may just be the way things work in America because that's where we live and the realtors often talk to each other and want to get the biggest commission they can so they will work with each other. So hold out for that dream home. And don't put yourself into a bind and maybe even have a little extra money to put into some renovations. Best of luck and blessings to you both. 29:27

I really don’t understand why you would be in freezing cold and dark sweden, when you could be chilling in the sun in portugal?

My goodness, the suspense... I was so lucky when I found my house and there was only one other party bidding and my second bid won.
Before that I had lost another house I had really fallen in love with, though, and now I am so happy I had to wait a bit longer and found a much better option.
Looking forward to seeing if you will keep looking. Hemnet is on your phone even when you are not in Sweden, and if the perfect property shows up, you could still fly in and check it out...

I might have missed something explaining this so apologies if im repeating. But how can you buy in Sweden with the EU laws of the amount of time allowed in country. Is there something different if you buy a property

No, anyone from anywhere can buy property in Sweden. There is no Golden Visa scheme, and ownership doesn't mean you get residency, you still have to apply seperately.

no they will have to follow same rules. basically 6 months max per year with no more than 3 months at one time

Everything you both went through is so normal. And basically, what I think the whole about "not getting emotionally attached" is really only to not let the very normal exciting emotions cloud your better financial judgement. And you are right, when it is meant to be - it will be.

What ever happened to your Portugal dream? Surely it’s much better to have a base in Portugal with so many places to travel too than being stuck out in the middle of Sweden, It’s like the end of the world there. I Enjoyed this video though it was quite exciting! But it’s a sign!!!

Oh good on you...yes emotions is all part of the buying process otherwise you wouldn't stretch out your money...but you can't imagine what's out there still...one day you'll go ' who knew this was in our future when we were looking at that place in Sweden?' All the best & well done. Just keep waking up determined to enjoy what today has to offer - all the very best!
