⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

Consider yourself lucky. 6 months of darkness 8 months of freezing cold weather. That area has weather just like Alaska and Siberia. And your son as a young boy or teenager could drown in that lake 🤔
You need to do some digging on better help guys
@AB_538 very true, many different licesing boards are starting to consider lawsuits against them
Why?
Never mind Beans, you know that your dream home is out there, just ask Kinging-It! 😉 👌 ❤️
I live in alaska....trust me.....maybe rent for a year first....feel ALL seasons.
And futher north in sweden in summer the less blood you will have left due to mosquitos XD
@@sebbelp Yep if you want a reality check go and see Jonna Jinton's latest "first days of Spring" videos and the mosquitos of northern Sweden...holly cow I have never seen that many and I live in Canada :)
I'm Swedish, and I've lived in Stockholm my whole life. I would _never_ buy a house where they are looking, and the reason is *_MYGG_*
Northern Sweden is dark for 6 months per year. Added to that these houses are in the middle of the wilderness. Very nice summer in good weather, no doubt. Visit in the middle of a bleak November or February to see what it's REALLY like.
Absolutely true. They're being very naive.
@@A-Nobody yep...
I agree with this. It looks like a very cold existence!
100% agree with your comments, but also very bright for the other 6 months (summer) even down south. When I was there, the birds chirping loud and basically full sunshine at 4am was very disruptive. Everything shut down by 6pm on a Saturday except Bahaus DIY which was seemingly always open. This was 20 years ago though so I am sure things have changed.
To be fair, they did visit in the cold weather with snow, not the warm summer
It just means that your actual dream house is still out there somewhere. You just have to find it. Chin up Beans! All is not lost.
I wouldn't buy anything for at least 18mos. WAIT !!!
@@kookietherapy9398 Why 18 months? Why such a specific time frame? They should continue to look. When they find the right property do the same thing, bid and hope for the best.
kookietherapy has a worthwhile perspective. That is, it's Spring now; people want to get out, look around, etc. In six months when it starts to get colder there again, you might still find nice places, maybe a bit less and maybe with less competition.
@@CreatorInTrng 6 months makes sense. 18 months does not.
Zackly, this is just a precursor, and now they have experience.
I'm Swedish and also daydream about owning a little house or cabin in the woods. But then i usually come to my senses and remember the darkness, bitter cold, mosquitos, isolation and general costs of maintaining a house. I think i'll stay in my apartment and rent a cabin for vacation instead.
I've heard that the mosquitos are really bad at lakeside properties in Sweden and that you have to live under a net. Another level from midges in Scotland in summer.
Sounds like Minnesota.
@@taterkaze9428 Pretty similar in terms of climate and nature
Been through this journey. I'm a Brit and now live in a cabin in the woods in Sweden.
Always expect to pay a lot more than the asking price. Look for places about 20-30% less than your budget.
We paid just over a million for a small cabin with 2 acres of land and only 1 and a half hours from Stockholm
Mind me asking, did you retire there ? I’m considering moving out there but would need to find work
On the few occasions that I’ve been in those home-buying scenarios, I have a ritual right before placing the first offer: I stop to do a hard dive on “counting my blessings” and being deeply grateful for my life in that current moment. I sit with that for a while and then say to myself: “I am about to ride an emotional rollercoaster that’s out of my control. Thankfully, if I lose out on the property, it won’t impact my current amazing life. Worst case…. I’m back to ‘square one’, where blessings abound and I still have my savings.” Things have a way of working out.
Guys, we went through exactly the same heartbreak when we were about to buy our house. On the day of exchange the seller called us asking for more money. That was 30 years ago and we found this house a week or so later. We have been very happy since. Don't worry. As we say in Brazil, nothing happens on the eve. Everything happens the day it's supposed to happen. Keep strong. You have everything you need right now.
What a roller coaster! We have lost houses we loved, but always ended up somewhere better. Your place is out there, and you will find it! Valuable practice in making offer, bidding, and knowing your limits.
I started watching van-life videos during the pandemic, and 95 percent of them have purchased or built a home since then.
Most bought land because of brexit and people's attitudes and countries not willing and understanding motorhomers.
Because the pandemic caused issues for frequent travelers and many are now wanting a "home base" to return to!
@@stum8374
It’s not that people/countries misunderstand van lifers, it’s the few van lifers that abuse it and ruin it for everyone, just like so many other things in this world. Rules/laws are typically developed because of the few who can’t act like decent humans, or feel entitled to things they haven’t earned.
In the 80's there were loads of people in vans, I expect lots ended up on land or in houses. Constant nomadic is hard.
Van life is pretty much dead now the biggest Hoax in History is over.
Bidding wars are the worse. Thanks for the honest raw emotions.
I'm a Realtor in the USA, what I tell my first time buyers is have patience, what is to be will be, the right house will turn up. Fall in love but not attached until contracts are signed. I wish you much luck and fun in the search.
You sound like my husband (and that's not a compliment I'm afraid). We've put offers on 3 properties in the past 1.5 years and lost all 3. Telling someone it wasn't meant to be isn't helpful. When you visually put your furniture into a house being sold, then not getting it is heartbreaking.
@@lindathelondonb9504 Real Estate is a numbers game, especially in a sellers Market. Sorry you have lost out, but bad on you for getting emotionally attached, before your in contract.
@@lindathelondonb9504Another example of why people want to live in the woods in a tent! Tired of the greed and manipulations!
What if the next house is better than all prior 3 homes? Be grateful that you are able to shop for a new home. There are many out there who can’t even get a room. Try praying and placing everything in God’s hands. He never disappoints. God bless.
For me, the house is just one part of the equation. The surrounding community, towns, cities / infrastructure as well as climate etc. would be just as important or even more important to me than the house itself. I would take a step back and ponder all these questions before a wild goose chase of a cheap house with a nice view...
I am astounded that they bid on a house without seeing the nearby town and infrastructure first, and without experiencing it at different times of year
Logistics with kids, depend on creating content, climate, history with mental challenges and mosquitoes would keep me away. Portugal is a better option.
Don’t be surprised if they pull out. Sometimes it’s a realtors trick to up the price by having another “buyer” on the hook. But importantly, if it doesn’t happen, it’s because something even better await! Stay hopeful.
That is completely illegal in Sweden though, to add fake bidders. Also they have to disclose who the bidders are when making the deal.
That area on the map you zoomed in to is about a 10 hour journey from Stockholm. I thought you said 4 hours max would be good. I have driven from Stockholm to Mora, much further south, with young kids - it was a long way and then there were huge mozzies to contend with. Flights not cheap either, just booking today for August to Stockholm. I think you need to visit the area in mid summer and mid winter before you decide.
Things to be mindful of (since you aren't used to colder countries). Be aware that country roads with big hills will be very fun driving in the snow. Also, make sure that your driveway isn't too long - snow shoveling is not fun after the first couple of times. If your driveway is long, you will probably need a snow blower, snow plow etc. Make sure your driveway isn't too steep, or you may have to park at the end of the road whenever it snows.
Hi guys! So exciting for you. As an American, living in Norway with a cabin in Sweden a couple of things to land you firmly on the ground. Do check with a bank in Sweden how to get an ID number to open bank account. You will need an account to pay your utilities and annual taxes. Also weather and damp is a struggle. Electric can be expensive. Mosquitos! That’s it. It is so nice in the summer months to be outside all day and just enjoying the space and friendly Swedes
What is hydro and what is weather in summer
Yep l live outside London and The Mosquitos are huge big black things l’ve never seen anything like them AWFUL 😞
@@doke889some people take out loans. Some spend with what they have saved.

@@sst6358 Saw huge ones in Alaska too. I’m not a fan of mosquitoes the size of small 🐝 bees. 😬🙏
When we found our first house in UK, we too were very excited like you. We had picked a solicitor, everything was rolling along and we got to the survey. We got a message from the surveyor telling us that he had already surveyed the house for someone else. The owner was selling it to his friend behind our back. We were heartbroken. However, we continued looking and ended up with something better and cheaper. So chins up. It was not meant to be this time but there is a house out there waiting for you.
22 years ago when I was looking at houses, I found a house & was excited my bid was accepted. However, during the home inspection, they found mold in the foundation where it met wood. I am allergic to mold, so that was a no go. I kept looking & found my house! It was even better than the first one. I still live in that house. So, have patience, what’s meant to be will turn out. Good luck Beans!
The house you put an offer on, was sold for 925K ( 85K$/70K£) so 33% up from asking price. Very common for houses here to sell for double the asking price. 💙💙💛💛
If homes sell for often double the asking price. Why do the agents undervalue the property in the first place. Why not value according to market prices. ?
@@stephenellis3430 It's more beneficial for the seller to have a bidding process. These types of isolated properties, far out in the countryside, often start at a very low asking price. This is not the case in our big cities.
@@stephenellis3430 It is a very common tactic in Sweden to put a low initial price to attract people and start bidding wars, unfortunately (I live in Sweden)
Completely understand the feeling, we went through the same thing last year but my advice is to not give up. We thought we lost our dream home only to find our current place 5 minutes away and couldn't imagine living anywhere else now 🇸🇪❤
I have to jump in and say that I’m a firm believer that “everything happens for a reason”, and iI think that something much better is coming your way! Keep the faith. I know your ❤ was set on it but there’s a different path for you and yours. 🙏
It doesn't. Even as a 5 year old I understood that life is random and sometimes cruel. But if believing that ' everything in life has a reason' makes it bearable for you. Carry on.

@@simplyme6558 there is plenty of nonsensical injustice in this world, murder victims who never see justice, children who die from war. People whose lives are cut short by devastating illness. Just believing in ' fate' is avoidance but if it helps you manage, OK.
You know sometimes it's just meant to be. Somebody upstairs is telling you something. Your dream house is out there. And it will be the right one. It happened to us. Be Patient, Stay Positive and keep looking. Sending much love❤❤ from where we are now (Porto, Portugal) The Love Beans, Harriet, Jim and Yuki
I have to tell you, I believe a lot of times those bids are not real that they have. They know what your limit is because the realtors do talk to each other and they will do the bidding wars just to get you to go up to your limit. My husband and I went through that and we did the same thing you did by stopping fairly close to our limit. A couple days later they called us saying the other people pulled out and it did make us believe that it was not a real bidding war. So we told them that we were no longer interested and then we watched the property sit for another little while. Then we went back and offered them their beginning asking price again and they took it. We got the house and we were very happy about it but at the same time we were angry at the feeling of being manipulated or at least they tried to manipulate us. Of course that may just be the way things work in America because that's where we live and the realtors often talk to each other and want to get the biggest commission they can so they will work with each other. So hold out for that dream home. And don't put yourself into a bind and maybe even have a little extra money to put into some renovations. Best of luck and blessings to you both. 29:27
In Sweden, the realtor is obligated to take note of all bids that are made and who made the bids. When the affair is closed the realtor will give the list of all bidders to both sellers and buyers. This is a way to prevent fake bidding.
@@cristin5762 But a foreign couple won't know who knows one another. They're def at a disadvantage. I hate this system lol
I wasn't paying good enough attention when responded to this, at one point in the video. Alex says that if the bidding war raises the price but the other person backs out, The price rewinds back to the last thing The people bid before the other folks came in to the process. That's actually how they protect from it and it totally makes ton of sense

The bit I would really like to understand is regarding residency, you know that small bureaucratic detail that us Brits now have to contend with given we no longer having the right of free movement in the EU.
Exactly what I was wondering! I thought brits could now only be in the EU for up to 90 days in a given 180-day period.

I felt anxious when I saw that long driveway, considering the amount of snow removal necessary. That mushiness underfoot is probably normal for spring. Here in New England (esp in VT, NH, and Maine) it's called mud season, resulting from snow melt.
If that was an proper road the local government has to make sure the snow gets away. Local farmers get some money for their service as long as they live there permanently.
At the actual property limit they stop.
Well done for sticking to your limit 👍You can't afford to get emotionally involved in buying property. It can be a long waiting game, but eventually more properties will become available and you have all the time in the world to dream your future life once you've bought a place, not before.
I think they have a lot to learn, especially since they thought they would win the first house they ever bid on!
Left my previous comment too soon... I'm sorry it didn't work out but it's quite incredible to see how beautiful and affordable Sweden is. Hopefully you guys will find your dreamhome soon!
We got outbid on 5 of the houses we’d put bids on in 2008. We “settled” for our LAST choice, the one we dubbed the bad vibes house. After we got into the house and neighborhood, we discovered we were in actually the best location and house, for us, of the 5 in the neighborhood. There will always be another “dream” house. It may just take more time and now you have more experience. Good Luck!
You guys and Noah should do a travel vlog around my country, New Zealand. I love watching your UA-cam. You are so inspiring and real. Would love to meet you one day. Can't wait for your next video xxx

Good luck y’all, thanks for bringing us along😊
If you’re willing to go up that much, meanwhile you could be looking at other properties in that range and you might find something that offers more.
I’m so proud of you! You stepped out into the unknown. You allowed yourself to feel all the crazy feelings that go along with this process and stuck to your budget. I know you will end up with a wonderful home where you can create all those beautiful memories.
I can't remember the last time I felt so nervous watching a UA-cam video. I can imagine it was a stressful process. As someone who has lived in Sweden before, I'm also dreaming about owning a cottage in Sweden. It's just so beautiful and peaceful there. Good luck on finding your dream house!
We lost out on 5 houses during our home buying process in 2015. I know the market had only gotten more insane since then, but it was so stressful in the moment. The only thing that kept me going was to know that the right thing was meant to happen. Sure enough, our house wound up being perfect for us, in the perfect location, and with a perfect neighborhood and community. I’m glad you also have the same attitude to know what’s meant to be will be!
You have every right to have the dreams, you have every right to feel disappointed. However house buying and selling can be gruelling. Take care.
I forgot to mention, the property buying process in Sweden is extremely fast compared to abroad. You can view one day, and sit at the bank signing papers two, three days later. Done! It's really simplified compared to other countries.

I meant to post this comment after your last video but as you said, it really comes down to how a place makes you feel. When I've house-hunted in the past, I knew within seconds of arriving and entering if it was where I wanted to be. And even after thinking through it logically, if those feelings are still there, it's the place to bid on and potentially go on another rollercoaster ride. You definitely learned from this experience and YOUR dream home will present itself. Not only your dream home, but the home you are MEANT to have.❤
Hey guy's if that bid doesn't fall through. I don't know about outside the US but here it really makes a difference to add a letter with your bid talking about your little family and how wonderful it would be to get said house. Good luck you guys❤
Good tip! I actually had the advantage that the realtor didn't have time and the owner showed me the house. And we had a really good click which I believe might have worked to my advantage.
The highest bid doesn't always win as in Sweden it is always the seller that decides who will get the house.

Your "happy" is already with you! You will take it to your next AMAZING adventure, wherever that is! Can't wait to see it!! ❤❤❤
I was so excited with you two. I had chills and heart racing moments and tears when it ended. What a roller-coaster ride😢
Alex and Emma, sad to see you missed out on the lakeside home. But you're in the game and there will be other opportunities. Don't be disheartened over losing out... look at the life you have. You three are an amazing family and no matter what that is what is most important. Excited to see you three grow and your continued adventures!
What ever happened to your Portugal dream? Surely it’s much better to have a base in Portugal with so many places to travel too than being stuck out in the middle of Sweden, It’s like the end of the world there. I Enjoyed this video though it was quite exciting! But it’s a sign!!!
End of the world ? For you maybe 😂😂😂 grow up
Bummer, I was really rooting for you! We had a similar issue with the house we’re in now (17 years ago), luckily we were able to manage it. Your forever home is out there, have to keep the faith! 😎
Hey guys, we enjoy all your videos but this one was a fantastic piece of television! Especially enjoyed Alex talking to the camera on the bench, articulated our own predicament so well. You will find your place, just a matter of time before you figure it out. Can’t wait to see where you end up!
Sorry it didn’t work out. Thanks for taking us along for the journey. Now you can be open to something even better! Good luck!
A New Dawn Fades
Can be very difficult during the long winters with the cold and months of snow, not for me
And i LOVED the little Noah cameos!!
Man this video resonated with us so much. We are in the same situation, bidding on houses and not getting them. It’s stressful and defeating, but like everyone keeps saying to us, you will find the right one eventually. I’m sorry it wasn’t that one, but I’m sure there are so many beautiful properties still to choose from.❤ Good luck!
I might have missed something explaining this so apologies if im repeating. But how can you buy in Sweden with the EU laws of the amount of time allowed in country. Is there something different if you buy a property
No, anyone from anywhere can buy property in Sweden. There is no Golden Visa scheme, and ownership doesn't mean you get residency, you still have to apply seperately.
no they will have to follow same rules. basically 6 months max per year with no more than 3 months at one time
@@SimonParkerUK They don't have to live there at all, but if they did and then you include the rules it would eat up time travelling elsewhere in Schengen.
You need to show residence contract at the police and sufficient means to live. Nothing else
Buying a house is one thing. Living there is something else. Working there is another level whatsoever.
Dearest Emma...please don't buy a home in Sweden or Norway. Think of the long, long dark nights of winter. As a person with depression myself it would not be an environment I would or could live in. Think about that for yourself.....Portugal would be so much better.
This is a good place to live, I know, I live not that far from where you zoomed in on the map. People sound a bit negative in the comments. The winters are long, they are also beautiful and the stars are everywhere on clear nights. There is a great sense of freedom with all the space around you, the nature, wildlife, lakes and mountains. The houses are built for the cold, Swedish homes are usually warm inside, the coldest I ever been iinside a house were the winters I spent in Ireland. The community up here is great, good neighbours are important. Mosquitoes aren't really an issue as long as there is a bit of open land around the house so there can be a bit of a breeze. I love this place on Earth. ❤
There is something better out there for you.Its all a learning process.Best wishes on your home journey.🥰
Thank you for the content!! All we need is the right advice on how to invest in crypto and we will be set for life, made $28,000 profit from trading last week regardless of how bad it gets on the economy....
I will advise you stop investing on your own and seek for guidance from a professional, I don't invest on my own anymore, always required help and assistance...
0:02 from my personal Financial advisor
YES!!! that's exactly her name (Mrs Elizabeth Rossiello ) I watched her interview on CNN News and so many people recommended highly about her and am just starting with her from NJ 🇺🇸
I'm a long term investor, I withdrew my profits of $61,000 during Xmas period last year...
This sounds so good and I would like to be a party to this, I there any way I can speak with her?
You escaped a bullet. So expensive. Sweden maybe beautiful but really? Very expensive living, long cold dark winters, difficult language etc etc. Mosquitos......
You guys will find the perfect place, and i can't wait to see it! ✌️
Great video❤❤❤
