    ⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
    What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

The main issue is the stairs and occupying Noah to get the furniture in. Ideally if items can be stored with a deposit at 2nd hand stores, then collected all on one day later on with a large hired van and one or two helpers, that's likely the best plan. I understand using Ikea to get essentials in and actually be able to spend every night there, but to truly furnish it with character, gotta get those antiques 😀

Here's a suggestion for all those stairs :
Buy a few truck loading ramps and put them over the stairs. Get wooden boxes or sturdy boxes to put small items in. Use a wheeled roller (here we call it a dolly) and bungy chord or straps to secure heavy items onto the dolly. Pull furniture and items up the stairs over the ramps. There are handcart dollies specifically designed to move up the stairs. For smaller items a smaller grocery cart with wheels could be used to haul things up those stairs without ramps.

It is clear you genuinely love your son and wish to give him the best upbringing you can. I won’t say it can’t be challenging because it can be. However, you’re starting out with the right attitude. There is one book I would recommend how to raise an emotionally intelligent child.By John gottman. It has some great ideas in it and focuses on coping with children’s emotions.

Patience is not only a virtue, it's a necessity! You now have somewhere to sleep. Good start. Does your shower work? Do you have a working sink? Your next visit is to a grocery store or Brico to stock up on supplies. Cleaning supplies, kitchen basics, bathroom supplies, and whatever gets you through an average day without you breaking into tears.
Soaps, toilet tissue, cleaning products, dish cloths, towels, dishes, flatware, pots and pans, a dish tub for washing dishes, toilet brush, a mirror for the bathroom, mouse traps,
Kitchen storage containers for dried foods you can leave when you go traveling (pasta, flour, sugar, dried beans, corn meal etc) and a short cupboard you can store all that in. One for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.

We found a table outside a cafe at the foot of the cathedral steps and had a ringside view whilst drinking cocktails and being plied with delicious free snacks. As you said the people were super friendly.

As someone who’s lived in whilst simultaneously renovating a house. I’d suggest a wardrobe, chest of drawers or something cheap/second hand.. a dedicated clean space to put your clothes. Living out of a suitcase can be a real challenge. When you come to working in that bedroom, it’s much easier to cover the bed and wardrobe with a drop cloth or something and not have it to schlep it out or covered in dirt after a long day’s work. Similar to where you store your dishes and food. If you keep in theme with camping, there’s some great pieces to use for both… also, it won’t go to waste when you finally find pieces you’ll actually furnish the house with. Unless of course you find the perfect pieces. 😅

Pretty much our experience in France. We hired a little van and it took us an hour to pack the thing outside IKEA, everyone was staring and shaking their heads 😅. But we did it. We ended up getting to bed at 3.30am after building ours. We also bought a rug. We have a camping fridge, kettle, toaster and new this year a mini oven. We also bought curtains and a few lights. The rest of our cottage is equally rustic .

We lived in a small village just outside Catania with our two young children in the 1990s and sent our daughters to nursery then school in Catania.
What made it really special was having young children, because the Sicilians really love them - you'll have a great time.
Sensible things to get would be a table and chairs, but a coffee machine and a bar would be more fun.

Good job despite the small miscalculation with the luggage. 😅My advice, as a mother of two, is to also get a mattress topper the next time you are at IKEA. With small children, there can be accidents with pee, poo and vomits in the bed. A replaceable mattress cover extends the lifetime of the bed considerably. Other than that, I think a mixture of old and new in the interior is nice. Blending new stuff with old furniture, glass, bowls and plates from second hand gives a nice touch to the interior. I'm excited to see the rest of it.

Helenahagstedt8953 just a tiny suggestion - and this is my pet peeve - please use the word HOMEY instead of homely. HOMEY means warm, comfortable, contended living, while HOMELY means unattractive or ugly.

    • @theonlywoody2shoes
      @theonlywoody2shoes 2 місяці тому +3

@Cat-ti1kc: I think this may be a “tomaytoe - tomAto” moment between British English and American English; as in British English, the word "homely" has a favourable connotation and means simple, unpretentious, cozy and homelike.
I do appreciate that in American
English that term has a somewhat different meaning, but this channel is about a British
Couple and their son. The British spelling of that word is “homie”, and here this is a slang term for someone who originates from the same area (or home town) as a person.
We each have different spellings, pronunciations and meanings of words as our “common” language evolved separately and diverged for different reasons; neither is correct, just an effective “regional dialect”, so please understand and embrace the differences from the perspective of others. Just look up the British equivalent of a pencil eraser or fanny pack and “vive la difference” as our French cousins might say.

Congratulations on your new bed!!!! How exciting!!! Now when you are there you can sleep AT HOME IN COMFORT!!!!! Get a child gate for the stairs next I think and a rustic table for the outer temporary kitchen area! ALL you have to do with the walls is spackle, not to hard, or just paint right over it 🤣!!! You two are living a wonderful dream and are so very blessed!!! It's so so exciting

small kind of silly note. use that chest strap clip with your baby carrier! that's what takes the load off of your back and shoulders, and helps stabilize the weight. and for anyone else buying a similar type mattress, you'll find you're supposed to let it air out without any sheets or people on it for at least 8-12 hours so it can fully expand. I thought you both were crazy for having the furnishings moved out when you bought the place, but I'm excited for you to make it your own!

I would get a kitchen table and 2 decent, comfy chairs plus a high chair. You can do everything at a kitchen table. Ikea do a inducrion hob with 2 rings that would make a huge difference (and safe with a toddler).

End tables would go well with the bed. Lamps, nick nacks, and books on the table. Wall decors. Makeup table with chair. Try to make a corner area for your son to play with his toys while you work around him. Area rugs can tie up the look. Corner vase with peacock feathers.

Fun and Adventure will still be a priority, only no longer the focus. (until empty nesting time, then fun and adventure will return as the focus). I think your first home is charming and a perfect place to start your next chapter. Has baby fever got ya yet because before you know it baby number two will be joining the journey. You mentioned the friendliness. I've never been to Italy. But I live in Texas. We 100% have some serious crap going on here. But the people are extremely friendly. I wonder if increased friendliness is a climate thing? Do people become more friendly the further you go toward the equator? Just a thought.

Congratulations! What a wonderful life milestone to celebrate. It reminds me of my early moves. I would definitely get a wardrobe and chest of drawers next. Makes the beginning of each day much easier and more pleasurable. Also some lighting next to the bed will give you a nice ambience as the days get shorter. I suspect you will need a portable heater too if you plan to be there over winter. And of course, a washing machine (or washer dryer in one to save space) I assume there is no laundromat in the small village.

Wonderful to see and hear your level of excitement about your house as it becomes your home 🏡 ❤. I was thinking maybe you could build a temporary plywood ramp to assist with bringing your smaller and mid-sized furnishings up and into your house. Maybe something foldable in half (North to South) so others could easily pass by if need be. Then a wheelbarrow or wagon might be able to assist the lighter loads. Just a thought but it might be worth thinking along these lines beforehand. Whatever your plans are We wish you a Safe and Successful move-in. Good Blessings to you and to your friends with their new 👶 baby. ❤.
