We live in a nanny state whether we like it or not and it will only get worse in the long run because of a few citizens who think they are the law on the roads .its parental control which is the real issue and understanding boundaries ,laws and sticking to them then new laws wouldn't need to be set?
Residential streets absolutely are playgrounds - it's where neighbourhood children meet and interact. Those streets should be built to force low speeds on drivers. On the collector and arterial routes, movement must be prioritised and 20 limits would be silly. Town centres are places for people on foot, cars must move slowly there so 20 is the right limit there.
Because of Drakefords inaction in improving the M4 its putting off companies coming to Wales . The WAG wastes money, they bought the Cardiff Airport and most Welsh people fly from Bristol ! better choice and cheaper. Everything the assembly touches turns to crap
He's put a stop on building any new roads, not just the M4 relief road. Wales is actually the biggest deterrent to voting Labour. A total shitshow here.

She said it. That’s so fair 🎉
Cars are not configured to go that speed in any gear, people will be constantly shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears -emissions will go up. That woman is wrong about reducing brake wear as you will constantly be on the brakes.. and clutch, trying to stay at such a stupid limit. I live in France now and driving through villages these days you get a lot of 30kph limits (30kph being similar to 20mph) so I know how frustrating they are.
Lool 20mph in second gear is literally a petrol guzzler and high revs so more emissions. Since the masks and lockdowns have the sheep still not woke up
In the areas that they apply 20 limits to, it's absolutely necessary. Look at the stats ref risk of injury and survival rate for people hit by drivers in urban areas, then say that again - if you can.
@@Realpoweronearth low limits in urban areas aren't about pollution, they're specifically about reducing crashes, and reducing injuries in crashes. That said, when drivers maintain a constant low speed there's no reason that pollution would be increased. It's only when lead-footed drivers hoof it from one speed-controlling device to the next and then brake hard that pollution (tailpipe and noise) are increased.
Poor driving causes accidents not speed, she should patrol around a few schools to witness the shocking driving manoeuvres of some parents dropping off their little darlings, it’s an eye opener.
Wouldn’t it be more effective to teach children how to safely cross the road? In my day road safety was taken seriously and people were taught to take personal responsibility rather than making your safety someone else’s problem.
I'll turn your last sentence around: drivers must be taught to take personal responsibility for not harming others rather than making the risk that they pose someone else's problem. In every field of human activity, responsibility for the safety of others is placed squarely on the person operating the machine that has the capacity to cause harm. Why, uniquely, should car operators get a free pass on that, with everyone else being made responsible for not being harmed by the machine operator? Yes, teach children to be aware of how to use the streets, but drivers must carry the responsibility for not hitting people.
@@TheTraveller20081 cars are on the roads which was designed for them, if a pedestrian wants to cross the road, they need to take care, because the roads are for cars. Drivers do not get a free pass, but then why should a pedestrian get a free pass and put the responsibility on the driver when the pedestrian steps out in front of them?
Safety and the environment are NOT the point. They are just the EXCUSE to get us to not drive by inconveniencing us and bankrupting us with fines and fees.
@@TheTraveller20081We don’t let kids play on train tracks so why should they play on roads? Pedestrians do not respect the road enough and unfortunately that seems to be a British culture thing and it’s getting worse. In many countries there is a crime called J walking which is when a pedestrian illegally endangers themself by walking on the road in an illegal way. No such law exists here, in fact pedestrians have right of way in all circumstances. Which frankly is absurd, dangerous, and an inefficient way to manage risk / reward.
@@Make_Boxing_Great_Again you clearly don't even know the history of what you promote: what you call 'J walking' is actually only in American law as 'jaywalking'. It's a term that was invented by the US oil industry specifically to denigrate the concept of being a pedestrian, because 'jay' was an American term meaning 'someone from the country, not familiar with big city ways'. They supposedly wandered around like the American jay-bird does, unaware of their surroundings. Prior to that (incredibly successful) campaign, people had the right of way everywhere - and the oilmen wanted them cleared out so that their new toy, the motorcar, could claim the god-like status that it now has in our urban environment. In US law, they did indeed rule that people must only cross roads at marked crossing points. Sadly, drivers don't give a shit even at most of those, given the rate at which they mow people down over there. People walking on the streets are very self-aware, for the simple purpose of self-preservation. Drivers have decided collectively that the motor vehicles are the only piece of lethal machinery that should be operated without any responsibility not to harm people not involved with using the machine. Luckily - and quite properly - there's no British equivalent of the US law on 'jaywalking', or to give it its proper name 'crossing the road'. We can cross anywhere that we feel it's safe. Recognising that humans make mistakes, it's up to those operating the killer machines to be responsible enough to drive them in a way that won't kill someone who makes a mistake. To your point about children playing: no-one suggests that they should be able to play on the A1- even on the A2985 - but in residential streets it's absolutely right that children should be able to interact with each other around their own neighbourhood; and be able to walk to school, to the shops, to the park without their parents being terrified to let them out of their sight.
well, given how many drivers prove every day that they're incapable of sticking below limits, one day they'll introduce electronic limiters. Shit drivers will have brought it upon all of us.
It will use more fuel and pollution, increase taxi fares and delivery charges increase congestion and will mean drivers focusing on their speedometers rather than on the road.
Has this lady ever travelled north of Cardiff? Wales, despite what the Senedd might think, is mostly rural. It takes several hours to travel from north to south at a reasonable speed. At 20mph?
That woman is insane. It does not use less fuel nor does it help the environment. Restrictions outside schools is the only useful place for 20mph. Hrs longer on the road to get to and from work. Wales wasting money on projects that sound like accidents waiting to happen while the pot holes multiply.
I agree, but most school zones have speed ramps to try to slow down traffic, but they just speed up in the gap between the humps. while on the other hand, it will reduce the number of pot holes after speed humps, and other pot holes, as cars won't litterally takeoff, and then land harder after a pot hole, that is why the Welsh government are after imposing a stricter speed limit rather than repairing our roads, so not so many cars are taking off and causing more potholes.

Back to school physics class for you. 20mph in 3rd will use less than travelling at 30 in 4th. Drag of all kinds goes up with the square of the velocity.
The idea is to try to get motorists to go 30mph, not 40mph. People will always travel faster than the limit. In cities, where 30mph applies, many motorists travel at evn 45mph. It is too fast with cycles and pedestrians crossing. A person hit at 45mph will probably not survive, whereas the can survive 30mph.
because between 10 and 20 mph the risk is not that different, so there's no point. At 20 most people survive collisions, and drivers have plenty of time to react and to avoid the collision in the first place. Think how quickly your car stops from 20 - the risk of any collision is tiny. Lowering limits to 10 makes next to no difference. From 30 to 20 the reduction is risk is comparatively huge, so that change is very logical in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
@@TheTraveller20081 You're more likely to survive a fall while walking on the ground than you are if you're 30,000 ft in the air so let's ban aeroplanes.
That woman is mad. The most cost effective speed, is around 40-45 miles per hour. Like Nigel said, 20 miles per hour, in 2nd gear, uses much more fuel. That woman is also nuts, talking about speed limiters in cars. They are set manually, as you are driving. So having the same speed limit, 24hrs a day, doesn't make any difference, to the car!
Yep, fruit loop. Must annoying living near her going at 20mph going everywhere, but wait... I guarantee she travels over 20, whether driving or as a passenger.
The only thing that this woman does all day is to sit at home drinking tea and coffee while having meetings by talking on video conference calls. If she doesn’t need to drive a car for her work why the hell would she understand what anyone else would need a car for? [She is an absolute F#%*whit].
wrong - 15 years ago my car would do 45mpg at 70; 60 at 60; 80 at 50 and 120mpg at a steady 30mph (all from the trip computer's 'instant' efficiency reading). That doesn't mean that I went everywhere at 30, but it does prove that lower speeds don't automatically mean burning more fuel. If you're using 2nd at 20, you're a bad driver. 3rd will be fine most of the time. Many automatics these days come with 7, even 8 gears, so they'll pick the lowest-load ratio easily. And EVs don't care at all.
In 2009 my manual 2Ltr diesel Ford mondeo company car would do 60MPG at a steady 60MPH on the motorway because you could get into top gear and cruise at low RPM and just keep it rolling. [I once got it up to nearly 70MPG by doing 56MPH all the way in top gear at very low revs] In the city with everything being a 30MPH limit I was was getting about 26MPG because it is start stop journeys and you have to keep using higher revs of the engine to get it moving again. I was averaging 34MPG overall on motorways, B roads and city roads combined. [fully loaded with engineers tools & instruments] In 2013 I then got a Qasqai with a 1.6Ltr diesel engine and all of the MPG results were much lower and worse all round, because I was carrying the same weight of kit and the smaller engine had to rev the engine higher to carry the same load. I now drive a 2Ltr diesel automatic discovery sport [fully loaded same as above]. Because it is an automatic I cannot get the MPG as high as the old mondeo on the motorway because the gearbox changes the gears down automatically when you slow down, so going slower on the motorway doesn’t increase the MPG because you cannot force it into a high gear with low RPM. On the motorway I am getting about 47MPG if I’m lucky, around town I am getting between 24 and 28MPG, and overall [city, B roads and motorway combined] I am getting between 34 and 38MPG. I am doing about 50% motorways, 35% B Roads, 10% city at less than 30PMH, and 5% city at less than 20MPH [averaging around 36MPG overall] My conclusion… because I carry a lot of tools and test equipment to do my job a bigger car with a bigger engine can sometimes be more efficient at higher speeds, you need the power to get going and then you can cruise at the optimum speed for the best MPG. [I work all over the south of England so do a lot of higher speed mileage] Conversely at slow speeds in the city the engine is constantly labouring the get the momentum going because you are doing start stop type journey through the traffic and junctions. making my car crawl around a 20MPH forces it into it’s most least efficient mode. So for me it is more efficient if I can keep the 20MPH sections of the journey to a minimum.
She’s lying. Vehicles are NOT more efficient at 20mph. In fact it will contribute to engine wear. Also, let’s not forget that 20mph is the limit. Many will drive ≥5mph below that limit.
not to mention those 15 above the speed limit that others will drive at anyway, or 25mph above when the new law comes in. even seen people doing closer to 70 in a 30 limit, admittedly boy racers.
Agree. Elderly people in Wales are terrified of the traffic cops and the “Arrive Alive” vans hiding round corners so they already drive well below the 30 mph limit. Expect these drivers to now do 15 mph in 2nd gear whilst other road users queue behind them or attempt to make dangerous overtaking manoeuvres. Safer roads ? No way, frustration and anger whilst driving a car is going to cause casualties.

Defenders of the 20mph limit continually seek to support it by informing us that being hit by a vehicle at that speed is far less likely to cause serious injury or death. Do they believe this is a recent scientific discovery, and if only town planners would've had access to this amazing fact years ago, they would've instigated it before? Greener i wonder -- as it takes 50% more time to travel the same distance. I suspect the next move will be to make it 10mph outside schools and hospitals.
20 mph will mean MORE pollution not less, because vehicles kept in low gear push out more emissions. You use MORE fuel in 2nd gear than in top gear. The Welsh lady spokesperson is round the twist. Not even logical.

Ah yes revenue maker, nothing about saving lives and having a better reaction time + braking distance. Imagine taking a stance against safety of the public. Stop watching gbnews maybe thats a start.

Tourism will be dead. It will take too long to get anywhere. It's just to get rid of cars. Cars driving in 2nd and 3rd will cause the engine to wear out faster. Sack the lot of them.

What happened to the Green Cross Code? Is it not taught in schools anymore? I have noticed a huge amount of bikers driving around at high speed on Welsh roads and being an ex-biker myself I can see the attraction as the roads are amazing… it’s a difficult one for sure 🤷🏻
Anna Semlyen couldn't answer Nigel's question about why we should still drive at 20mph in the very early hours of the morning when no-one is about. Driving at slow speeds for prolonged periods can cause boredom and tiredness. Driving at 20mph will have the car's revs at their maximum before changing up to third gear, so I can't see that there will be less pollution and less fuel used. As Nigel said, it sounds like she is 100% against cars and would rather we all went everywhere on pushbikes or maybe electric scooters. ;-) I'll be avoiding Wales if she gets her way.

@@catlerbattyonly one of those is true.

Their goal is 0mph aka you dont own a car, because its 'killing the planet '. Nut jobs.

[I once got it up to nearly 70MPG by doing 56MPH all the way in top gear at very low revs]
In the city with everything being a 30MPH limit I was was getting about 26MPG because it is start stop journeys and you have to keep using higher revs of the engine to get it moving again.
I was averaging 34MPG overall on motorways, B roads and city roads combined. [fully loaded with engineers tools & instruments]
In 2013 I then got a Qasqai with a 1.6Ltr diesel engine and all of the MPG results were much lower and worse all round, because I was carrying the same weight of kit and the smaller engine had to rev the engine higher to carry the same load.
I am doing about 50% motorways, 35% B Roads, 10% city at less than 30PMH, and 5% city at less than 20MPH [averaging around 36MPG overall]
My conclusion… because I carry a lot of tools and test equipment to do my job a bigger car with a bigger engine can sometimes be more efficient at higher speeds, you need the power to get going and then you can cruise at the optimum speed for the best MPG. [I work all over the south of England so do a lot of higher speed mileage]
Conversely at slow speeds in the city the engine is constantly labouring the get the momentum going because you are doing start stop type journey through the traffic and junctions.
making my car crawl around a 20MPH forces it into it’s most least efficient mode.
And you'll be spending more time looking at your speedometer making sure you don't exceed 20mph than studying the road!!!

Someone needs to talk about Manual for Streets! Totally out of date since cars have evolved!
NO! To 20 MPH
So we will now be getting overtaken by push bikes.........
That hurts your massive drivers ego somehow? Swear to god car owners are entitled pieces of crap.
What happened to the Green Cross Code? Is it not taught in schools anymore?
I assume that tourism brings a lot to Wales, I personally love the place but it would make me think twice about going if speeds were reduced to 20mph.
I have noticed a huge amount of bikers driving around at high speed on Welsh roads and being an ex-biker myself I can see the attraction as the roads are amazing… it’s a difficult one for sure 🤷🏻
What happens when bus drivers lose there licences getting to work. What happens then. Ludicrous
Why the minority dictates to the whole?
don't you love virtue signalling hahaha
You summed it up Nigel. Bonkers!
Won't this cause more pollution.
As Nigel said, it sounds like she is 100% against cars and would rather we all went everywhere on pushbikes or maybe electric scooters. ;-)
I'll be avoiding Wales if she gets her way.
People drive faster after midnight. No traffic = invitation for overspeeding, loss of control mixed with occasional drunk driving. Nothing good happens.
Yes but what do you expect from labour....a warning to the rest of the uk
That's me not going to Wales on holiday anymore
Yet again more bureaucracy so screw the drivers for money
"Its greener, you use less fuel in your vehicle, less pollution". Eight letters begins with b.
My car does less than 15MPG at 20MPH, whereas at 30 to 40MPH I get at least 30MPG. If that doesn't show the stupidness of this idea I'll never know.
what a lier horrible woman needs to be sacked
Well said.
