    This is the first time I can actually agree with Andrew. 20MPH outside and around sensitive areas is a very good idea. However recently driving in wales on a B-road in the middle of nowhere the speed went from 60MPH, to 20MPH, to 30MPH back to 60MPH within a few hundred yards. It is causing more emissions across the whole of Wales not reducing emissions. I wonder how many Labour, Libs and Plaid members have shares in sign producing companies?

    Complete idiots.

    • @joules531
      @joules531 7 місяців тому

      The fast Yarnton road has encouraged excessive speed for years, despite the obvious risks of deceptively sweeping blind curves, parked cars, numerous side roads and hidden driveways, and many houses whose front doors open directly onto this potentially dangerous road. The 20mph limit was put in place because drivers were often going too fast.
      You have to remember that villages like these, have many residents who are of senior age, so the risk of a momentary lack of concentration, undeclared poor eyesight, or the onset of dementia, makes a head on collision a statistically greater possibility. And a head on collision between two cars travelling at 30mph, makes the resulting 60mph impact likely to be unsurvivable. Whereas two cars hitting at 20mph, would make the resulting 40mph impact far more survivable, albeit still very serious, and probably life changing.
      If villages are actively monitoring speeds in Cassington then that's a good indiction that there is genuine reason for concern. So, rather than creating concern for residents, and labelling them as "do-gooders" or loonies, it would be far better for drivers to just stick to the f***ing speed limit for the common good, and wait till they get to the A40 before letting rip.

    I lived in North Wales for 18 years and the death from road accidents is very high when compared with elsewhere,most those accidents were caused by drink driving and young drivers going around rural areas like a bat out of hell in high powered small cars. When driving on mountain narrow roads motorcycles were the biggest offenders and casualties for riding recklessly on high powered at breakneck speed on these roads and introducing this ridiculous speed limit of 20mph isn’t going to stop those accidents because they are going to ignore them anyway and often muddy their number plates up so speed cameras cannot identify them,no matter what they say it’s just a money making exercise to create revenue and nothing else. A neighbour friend of ours was fined for 2 mph over the limit when reducing speed from a 40 mph limit to a 30 mph area by a roadside camera vehicle,these tactics have been going on for years and years and before anyone says they don’t fine you for that because of speedo error they do in Wales. I think they should concentrate on Heath care down there because in certain areas it’s pathetic and I am convinced that more people die because of that than they do on the roads, they need to get their priorities right,this silly 20 mph caper is going to ruin the holiday trade and day trippers not to mention the thousands of static caravan owners throughout Wales who will just move elsewhere.

    I am deeply skeptical of the alleged environmental advantages of 20 mph limits due to my own experience when one was imposed in my home town during the pandemic, because my fuel consumption increased by almost 4 mpg during this time, even though there was less traffic. The area is characterised by long, relatively gentle hills, and normally when the roads are clear third gear is fine most of the time; at 20 mph I was frequently having to change from third to second and back again to avoid over-revving and/or lugging the engine. In short, I hated it, my car hated it, and so did my wallet. I am a former driving instructor who used to teach eco-driving for a living, and if I cannot improve my environmental impact under these constraints, then I very much doubt the average motorist can.
    The choice of speed limit for any road type is always contentious because conflicting needs have to be met. Planners have to weigh the expectations of motorists to make reasonable progress against the risk to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users; where it is high, 20 mph does make sense; but on other roads with good visibility and few hazards, 30 mph is far more realistic. In these places changing it to 20 would make little, if any, positive contribution to road safety; in fact it could do the opposite, because experience has shown that if limits are set unrealistically low frustrated drivers habitually ignore them, which increases the danger to everyone. The bottom line is that speed limits have to be credible, and in this country 30 mph hits the sweet spot for the majority of urban roads, and it is a speed which approximately 85 per cent of british drivers are happy to comply with. Drop it to 20 and the situation would be quite different - and not in a good way.

    No reasonable person would object if mandatory 20 mph limits were imposed where they are needed, but as a replacement for 30 mph they are totally inappropriate. It would be nice if the people who dream up these hare-brained schemes would get real just once in a while. Even under perfect conditions it takes fifty per cent longer to travel one mile at twenty miles per hour than it does at thirty; that may not bother them, but to collection and delivery drivers with 100 drops to make before the close of business, and company car users doing 80 thousand miles a year or more (to name just a few), it is a huge encumbrance. And it is all very well pointing out that modern cars use very little fuel in fourth gear at twenty miles per hour, but perhaps someone should break it to these bright sparks that not all roads are flat?!
