  • In the world of Obsidian, high up in Falco Tower, Raven yearns for freedom and something ‘more’…
Music & Lyrics: Andrew Eldritch & Jim Steinman
    Vocals: Lauren Bradley
    Guitars: Olli Daffarn
    Piano/Programming/Additional Lyrics: David Smith
    Lyrics:
Some people get by, with a little understanding
Some people get by, but they’ll never soar
Oh I don’t know, why I’ve always been so undemanding
    One thing I know…Is I want MORE!
An I need all the love I can get, an I need all the love that I can’t get too x 2
I just can’t wait, to feel so much, to let somebody touch me
I’m too young, to feel old, I gotta know what I’m really worth
I’m yearning for freedom, and a life after birth
Some people get by, with a little understanding
Some people get by, but their life’s a bore
Oh I don’t know, why I’ve always been so undemanding
    One thing I know…Is I want MORE!
An I need all the love I can get, an I need all the love that I can’t get too x 2
There are parts of me that get so restless, all the flesh an blood an bone
I’m tired of all the same old, same old, an lying alone
I gotta feelin there’s a helluva feast waiting for me, an I’m dying to taste
So many secret dreams and forbidden fires, there’s no time to waste
Some people get by, with a little understanding
Some people get by, but they’ll never soar
Oh I don’t know, why I’ve always been so undemanding
But now I know…I want MORE!
An I need all the love I can get, an I need all the love that I can’t get too x 2
All the love, all the love, all the love that I can get,
an all the love, all the love, all the love that I can’t get too
    There’s a helluva feast waiting for me x 8
    An I’m dying to taste…

Scaramouche here...I rearranged this as one of my 'alternate visions' of the BAT musical. A solo for Raven early in Act 1.
Following the opening REVVED UP scene, something new and mysterious has sparked inside Raven, and after a heated argument with her parents (about who Strat and The Lost are), she stares out from her bedroom, onto Obsidian below, as an electrical storm starts to erupt.
As curtains billow in the wind, she now lies in bed (in white nightdress) and opens a music box on her nightstand. It has a pirouetting Tinkerbell and starts to play a melody she has never heard before (the chorus) but she starts to sing/speak a lyric that subconsciously comes to her, as she slowly falls asleep.
As the cello riff kicks in, she has fallen asleep, and the action moves from the raised bedroom set (which has gone dark), to a NOCTURNAL ALLEY setting (way down in The Deep End) on centre stage.
A huge FEVER DREAM dance sequence then takes place involving oiled and scantily clad male/female dancers, leather, chains, whips, motorcycles…the usual Steinman stuff!
Raven re-emerges through the tunnel (as she is part of the dream) and is now dressed in leather ‘n’ lace (think Cher in the Turn Back Time video).
The choreography hints at straight and lesbian sex, much like the ANYTHING FOR LOVE video.
As the song ends, centre stage goes dark and the raised bedroom set is re-illuminated to reveal Raven (still) in bed and asleep, as the music box melody reappears. Sloane sticks her head round the door and enquires 'you asleep Raven...thought I heard something?' Set goes dark and onto the next scene.
'There's a helluva feast waiting for me...' is the key lyric in this version. It summarises in a line, Raven's yearning and belief that somewhere beyond the confines of Falco Tower lies another world, the UNDERBELLY OF THE BEAST, and she's dying to taste!

“I just couldn’t wait” for this - something new from Smith & Bradley!
The Sisters of Mercy’s “More” is a goth-gilded anthem of hunger - hunger for love and lust and just wanting … well, more! In his uber-keen reimagining, David J. Smith adds “freedom” to the “flesh and blood and bones” of the song - freedom from the “same old, same old” sex and drums and rock and roll that atrophy our once “stark raving” libidos and rhythms and wildly dangerous dreams - freedom from our fears and our most debilitating inhibitions - and freedom from the crooked seduction of malaise that embezzles our minutes and leaves us - “too young to be old” - in the middle of everywhere, far away from the sacred unknown.
David re-sculpts the song by chancing risks outrageous - the double-dog-daredevilry of a whirling dervish with his “Scaramouche” on fire! The opening - a music box twinkling in the riot of a thunderstorm, attended by a sultry echo of breath-stealing exhaustion and aching despair! Wow! It doesn't get any "More" than that! Pure genius!
And then, of course, there’s the Supersteinstar of the show - the Raven(ous) Lauren Bradley - doing what she does best to music - “Lauren Bradley-izing” it! The astounding song starts as something we can only hear. But by the time Lauren’s done glazing it with the thermal-storm blow torch of her incendiary vocals, it’s also something we can "taste" - a supersonic slice of red velvet cake, fire-frosted with a legato-y layer of “holy fuck, was that delicious or what!?” Lauren doesn’t just take something that’s already great and make it greater. No. That would be great, but it’s greater than that. The “take no prisoners-ness” of her performance activates the unapologetically dizzy in us - the gloriously irresistible urge to spin crazily through the streets of Wherever shouting, “if it’s something we want, then it’s something we need,” “we’ll never let a night like tonight go to waste,” and “our bodies have a feeling that they're starting to rust, we better rev ‘em up and put ‘em to use” - in other words, “More, More, More!” - How’s that for being so damn demanding!?
(By the way, with respect to the final “An I’m Dying To Taste,” um … yeah - where in the hell is that “absolutionary” hose, the one that drenches people with holy water when they get too hot!? Hot! Holy yikes, Lauren! :):):)
Here’s to you, Jim Steinman & The Sisters of Mercy, for giving us “all the Loaf … and the love … we can get!” And here’s to you, Smith & Bradley, for super-amping the message: If there’s a feast waiting for you and you haven’t even gotten a taste, order one of everything on the menu (ok, fine, TWO slices of red velvet cake :) and dig in with remorseless abandon - devour everything … and then devour More!

Within the first 20 seconds of initially hearing you sing: For Crying out loud, I knew that if the stars align, you could be a star someday. It seems like it's just a matter of time, now, as your aura has become brighter. Just fantastic performance! *smiles* Bri

Wow Lauren, you've wrenched the heart out of this and tied it up with ribbons of blood by your great vocal range.
Never would have guessed this could be wrought from the the rather sullen original. Superbly produced, too ! (love the echoes back & forth)

Love it, love it, love it - this is a fantastic tribute to Steinman, both lyrically and vocally. I love how you wove in snippets of Steinman lyrics from elsewhere - I spotted items borrowed from "Bad For Good", "Edging Into Darkness" and "Loving You's A Dirty Job", as well as a hint of "A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" (Whistle Down The Wind version). I WANT ... erm ... additional, extra! After all, too much is never enough...

Not to sound arrogant, but when doing these 'alternate visions', I try to imagine if Jim was rewriting this for the show, and he would always borrow from himself. The additional lyrics were all conjured for the Raven character, and I think work really well.

    • @rickytutin
      @rickytutin 2 роки тому +1

Well, fantastic job! Your imagination worked - I initially wondered whether Jim had rewritten this for Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical, until I realised it wasn't on the songlist!

Ricky! So great to hear from you!!! I am so very glad you enjoyed this!! And yes, Scaramouche does a phenomenal job, not only re-imagining the songs but he also makes great use of Steinman lyrics, as Jim might have done himself!
