- Okay you guys, or should I say, "Listen here, group!"
The very first thing I'd like to mention here is that I used the lyrics from Meat Loaf's 1974 performance of 'More Than You Deserve' featured in the play, "More Than You Deserve" (music by Jim Steinman - of course).
I did this because - it’s one of my FAVORITES!
Not only do I find this melody to be absolutely beautiful to listen to, I also love to listen to the various recordings of Meat Loaf singing this song back in the 70s. Even though it was recorded over 50 years ago, you can still tell how absolutely massive and outstanding his vocals were. It's the closest we'll ever be to knowing what Jim heard as Meat auditioned that day - and I think that is what I love the most about it.
If you're not familiar with the production, there's so much awesome content available (programs, audio, image gallery, etc.) on Jim Steinman's website - Here's the link to the specific page:

Song Lyrics (1981 version):
From the very first moment I saw you,
I knew our love would be so strong
And the very first moment I kissed you,
I knew our joy would last so long
And then I saw you making love to my best friend, I didn't know whatever to say
I saw you making love to my best friend
So I looked him right in his eyes and I said - listen boy!
Won't you take some more,
it's what you came for
And don't mind me,
I won't throw you no curves
Have yourself a ball with my good woman
Won't you take some more boy,
it's more than you deserve
Won't you take some more boy,
it's more than you deserve
(The below verse is the missing verse from this video)
When I saw you hanging round the truck stop,
shining like an angel in the night
And when I saw you crying like a baby,
I knew you'd have to be my wife
Then I saw you making love to my best friend,
I didn't know whatever to say
I saw you making love to my best friend
So I looked him right in his eyes and I said - listen boy!
Now I think I'm gonna have to leave you
Because I'm feeling much too weak to share
And the pie, oh it's cut in too many pieces
The flavor that I crave is no longer there
Then I saw you making love to two of my best friends
I didn't know whatever to say
I saw you making love to a group of my best friends
So I looked them right in their eyes and I said -
Listen here, group!
Won't you take some more,
it's what you came for
And don't mind me,
I won't throw you no curves
Have yourself a ball with my good woman
Won't you take some more boys,
it's more than you deserve
Won't you take some more boys,
it's more than you deserve
Won't you take some more boys,
it's more than you deserve

I’m absolutely thrilled that Lauren chose to cover this song! “More Than You Deserve” is a wildly underrated Steinman gem - a sumptuously grueling morsel that you secretly delight in devouring when you want to know what emotional self-immolation tastes like! It’s a song that’s a story - a story about bearing witness to the defilement of one’s sacred dreams, and about a tempest of unbridled rage hiding beneath a facade of dismissiveness - hiding there until the treachery of “a group of my best friends” is just too much! And Lauren is just “too much” herself - in a strikingly fantastic way! She tells the story the way a tidal wave introduces itself to a beach - a calm approach, a building force, and then the onslaught! And the onslaught here is magnificent in its malevolence - a kill-strike run from 2:50 forward to the end that is as much a hate-surrender to the treacherous group as it is a declaration of war against the singer’s own being! (Although it’s only a stretch of four seconds, if Jim Steinman himself had the honor of experiencing the tremendous span from 3:03 to 3:07, he would surely have said to Lauren - “when it comes to singing my songs, you’re more than I deserve!”) Simply phenomenal!
Bryan, I first want to apologize for my delayed response here. Your commentary is tremendous and as I’ve said before so darn well written!
So, I love this song! ESPECIALLY those old versions of it on UA-cam. Meat’s voice is like rolling thunder. I’ve def said this before, the older versions on YT, these are probably the closest we will ever be to knowing what Jim heard in when Meat auditioned that day!
Thank you so much for what you said - 2:50 forward is pretty much my favorite part of the song to sing!! Actually from “the pie” on would be more accurate, lol.
This is a fantastic song to sing when you’re in the mood for a good bellow (which for me is sorta all the time, lol).
Thank you so very much for taking the time out to comment like you do, Bryan! ☺️🦇
And she's back...... I love this stuff x
Ha! Thank you, Steve!! 🤗🦇
definitely Lauren...you manage to convey peace and good vibes in Steiman's versions... thanks for the emotion...
Thank you so much for this, John! 🦇
You pulled off Meat Loaf's angry face perfectly! 😁🔥🙏❤️❤️❤️
Bahaha! This is one of the greatest comments / compliments you’ve ever written to me! 🤣🤣 “For that, I thank you!” (Couldn’t resist)
The flavour I crave for is still there for a steinman song.
It’s funny, just before I started to sing again (roughly Oct 2020), and despite my being a fan of Jim’s for most of my life, I “craved” a specific kind of music and I didn’t know what exactly what I was reaching for at the moment. I finally threw an 80s mix on my playlist and hoped for the best. ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ was the third song in and I remember thinking “Bah! STEINMAN! Of course! That’s what I need!” When it comes to Jim, the flavor that you crave is always there! :)
Think u would like the classic rock show version of Bat out of hell Lauren. If u already haven't seen it. 🇬🇧
What a pleasure to be able to hear your voice again after these last few weeks so sad for Meat Loaf fans. Very good choice this title marked the beginning of the colaboration between Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman. And they could have heard you from their new place of work. Simply thank you laureen thank you.
Thank YOU, Jerome! This comment is really wonderful. I appreciate it immensely!
Wahou Lauren what a beautiful rendition, it’s full of emotion and energy, you have a great voice, a very good performance, well done and like 👍 good evening Jean Marc 👏👍👏👍🎵🎶🎵🎶❤️♥️❤️♥️
Jean Marc, thank you! I appreciate your comments so much! You have a good evening as well!
This is the first time that I heard the song..well, I listened to you sing it a few times. What a story. I guess that I would say that you are the perfect person to sing Jim's songs...maybe after Meatloaf. smiles.
Ha! As always, thank you, Bri!!! 🤗🖤
Yet another fabulously impossibly perfect cover Lauren. You keep surpassing yourself. Absolutely amazing.
Wow! Thank you so, so much, Ken!!! It truly makes me happy that you enjoyed this! I loved singing it so it’s a win for both of us! ☺️🖤🦇
Nailed it AGAIN! 💗
Thank you so much, Robert!!! 🖤🦇
Awesome
Excellent as always. Someday you will stadiums
As always, I appreciate you and your comments, Michael! For that, I thank you!! 🤗🦇
Oh! I haven’t forgotten about the list! 😉

🖤🤗🦇
Great job and love the ending. I wish the backing rocked out as much as you did! Lol. ❤️❤️
Ah! Thank you, AG!!! 🖤🖤🤗🦇
Another AMAZING performance!!!!!! LOVE THE PASSION!!!!! One of my favorites!!!!
Hi, Cliff! Thanks so much!!! I love to sing this song!! 🖤🦇
This is divine rock vocals!!!
Wow! Thank you!!! Much appreciated!!!
There are other covers of Jim’s songs. Good singers but lacking the emotion that your singing has and a Steinman song has to have. As always thank you so much for keeping these masterpieces masterpieces.
I am sure that you get asked this quite often but are we likely to see you on AGT or any of the other shows like that, keep up the great work and I wait in anticipation of your next song xxx
Hi David! I have a couple of times! I really should look into that and/or the voice! Thanks so much for taking the time out to comment and ask about AGT! I appreciate it so very much!
I'm really happy you didn't decide to gender swap this one. This backing track is so short missing out that middle verse, which makes it even more startling than the original, hahahaha!
Haha, thanks! Yeah, it just seemed silly to change anything (gender wise, to me)! I felt like my changing a small series of words here or there wouldn’t make much difference. So I just decided to skip the words and sing the heck out of it instead! 😂 Yes, the backing track is missing a verse! That’s why I decided to go the old reliable 1970s version (lyrically) - I just couldn’t leave the pie verse out - I love it too much! 😂 This backing track is from your Smule account! We should have done this as a duet - maybe one of these days!
Again your vocals are amazing Jim and Meat would of loved to hear in person but now there listen from the Angels
Thank you for saying that, Tracie. Means a lot coming from you! X
PERFECT ! ! 😍🥰
Thank you so much, Lucas!!!! 🤗🖤🦇
Can you do one with the missing verse? Love ya regardless!
Aw Johnny! Haha thank you! This was the only version on Smule! I’ll see what I can get that includes the missing verse!! ☺️🖤
Voice is awesome strange choice for a woman to sing to my mind. But you could sing the phone book and make it sound good So despite my reservations on song choice Awesome vocals
Thank you, Nick! Haha! You crack me up!! I get what you’re saying - I just love this song!! 🖤
