The new monsters name is Bauk. It has this ability to smell your fear, to be able to play with your traumas, to paralyze you. So that you finally become easy prey.
@@LastKnownMeal even for don’t open grandma’s “good china” cabinet, or don’t go into the backyard shed or Bauk that lives in it will eat you… Bauk is used as a very versatile scare tactic. 😂 Think boogeyman but omnipresent and on steroids. It is very rare to see our culture represented it took me by surprise tbh. Last time something like this was included was botchling (drekavac) and I literally sobbed. It really made an emotional impact on me.
4:33 was very well described in the books, its how normal magic works in the witcher. Here she absorbes energy that can later be used for magic. Ciri learned it in her time with yennefer at the temple of the melitele. Later she used power from fire and was nearly taken over by it, so she swore to never use this power again. Seems like she is here.
Great breakdown. I agree that the dark, Slavic tone in the trailer feels true to the series' roots. However, I'm deeply conflicted about the direction CDPR is taking with Ciri becoming a Witcher. From a lore perspective, this move feels like it fundamentally misunderstands both Ciri's character arc and the thematic pillars of the Witcher universe. In Sapkowski's works, Ciri was defined by her role as a Child of the Elder Blood, a unique figure tied to Ithlinne's prophecy and the immense power of her lineage. Her arc revolved around rejecting the roles others tried to impose on her, whether as Empress of Nilfgaard, a sorceress, or even a Witcher. Her story was always about forging her own path, not conforming to established molds. By turning her into a Witcher, CDPR risks erasing the essence of what makes Ciri distinct. Her Elder Blood abilities, which allowed her to manipulate space and time and even alter the very fabric of existence, made her far more powerful than any Witcher could ever be. The Trials of the Grasses and mutations are not only unnecessary for her, they feel like a narrative regression. Thematically, Elder Blood represents legacy, fertility, and the continuation of a bloodline, while Witcher mutations symbolize sterility, severance from familial ties, and the embrace of a solitary, tragic existence. These two concepts are fundamentally at odds, and forcing Ciri into the Witcher mold undermines this powerful contrast. Moreover, the term "Witcher" (in Polish, "wiedźmin") was deliberately constructed as the masculine counterpart to "wiedźma" (witch). Sapkowski's linguistic choices reflected the male-centric experience of being a Witcher, a life defined by physical transformation, emotional detachment, and societal isolation. It wasn't just about who could survive the mutations biologically it was about the themes of masculinity, sacrifice, and the burden of survival in a brutal world. Ciri's narrative in the books was intentionally positioned outside of this framework. She wasn't meant to become part of the Witcher tradition, she was meant to transcend it. Additionally, sidelining her Elder Blood powers in favor of standard Witcher abilities diminishes the complexity of her character. In "The Tower of Swallows" and "The Lady of the Lake", Ciri's struggle was tied to accepting and controlling her Elder Blood, powers that were both a gift and a curse. If she's lost these abilities, as the trailer suggests, it raises questions about how this aligns with her established arc. Did she lose her powers as a result of the White Frost? Did she voluntarily relinquish them? These are massive changes that need to be addressed with care, but the trailer so far offers no indication of how or why these shifts occurred. Thematically, her becoming a Witcher contradicts the central message of her journey. Ciri's story was about rejecting expectations and forging her own identity. Turning her into a Witcher feels like a narrative shortcut to justify a new protagonist while sacrificing the deeper, carefully crafted ideas that defined her arc. It's not just about the lore, it's about staying true to the philosophical underpinnings of the series. I'm cautiously optimistic because CDPR has shown in the past that they respect Sapkowski's world, but changes like these risk alienating fans who value the series for its depth, its cultural specificity, and its commitment to exploring moral and existential dilemmas. I hope they provide a strong justification for these decisions and avoid reducing Ciri's role to fit a convenient narrative mold. For now, I'll remain skeptical but hopeful.
For the most part I agree with your nicely stated opinion, however, it is lore in the books, more so than the games, that Ciri's only choice was to be like Geralt and be with him. She always wanted to be a witcher and it was always the most natural ending IMHO to achieve in TW3. A lot of people are making a ton of assumptions here with very little information and the idea of a teaser trailer is not to provide all the information. That is the purpose to get you to buy the game. All in all, it is a fantasy story where lots can happen to explain things and they will make it make sense. Everyone just needs to relax and wait and see when we can finally see for ourselves. I'm very excited to play as Ciri and this route is the only natural one CDPR could take and I'm so glad they did!
The purpose of this trailer was to officially announce the game and who the protagonist is and that's it. We know nothing else. The games have separated the lore from the books and take place after the books. We dont know if CDPR is going to break the lore in the game or not but I seriously doubt they would. Despite the horrible release of cyberpunk, CDPR has always told good stories and I saw nothing that suggests this will be any different.
@@celticbabs3105This is exactly what I’m saying. The games never went by the books 100%. There are changes in TW3, and there was an ending where Ciri literally becomes a witcher. I think the trial of the grasses is only for gameplay purposes, so we can create different builds with Ciri with magic, blades, and alchemy. That an asset RPGs must do right.
All very well articulated points. I’m reserving judgement. From a gameplay perspective, they will 100% have to nerf Ciri’s powers from the end of TW3. Personally I’d accept the explanation that after the battle with the White Frost her powers were diminished or faded over time. I’d still be excited to play a Witcher game as Ciri but CDPR has their work cut out for them to make what they’ve shown us in the trailer make sense.
But what's up with that manly jawline and masculine features? She was hot in witcher 3, and it's been established that women can not undergo the trail of grasses that lets witchers take potions.
I’m very happy it’s Ciri. She’s an amazing rich literary character and I think that is part of what makes these games so great. I do understand the concerns about lore etc but I trust CDPR to cook.
@@DV_VG Because in the third game she wasn't a Witcher + Witchers barely remember how to make new ones (they stopped a long time because... I believe they didn't want to torture any more children xD And also because mutagenes were stolen in the first game maybe... Anyway) And also because she's not a child so I'm not sure if mutation are supposed to work... Hope they got a good explanation
@@DV_VG females cannot survive the Trial of the Grasses. Ciri is not a witcher but a conduit of magic. She cannot use witcher signs despite repeated attempts to teach her.
@@kaneyo0In the ending of Witcher 3 she became a Witcher, she didn't undergo mutation, but she was a Witcher, she referred to herself as a Witcher in the books and in the games, as for the mutation, I don't know maybe her blood has something to do with it? maybe the mutations worked for her in some other way?
I really hope they have a good reason for her not to be empress anymore. Maybe like a coup in which she gets wounded, forcing her to take the Trial of the Grasses as the only way for her to survive her wound. It doesn't have to be much, but I do want every ending to be acknowledged as canon.
The magic stuff was mentioned in interviews. It seems they want to develop Ciri as a mix of Yennefer and Geralt. Both Witcher fighting and magic use. So like she learned in the books she'll be able to draw from elements to power up spells. The chain is confirmed to be a secondary weapon as well. How and why she regained her magical abilities and why on Earth she would undergo the Trial of Grasses (also confirmed) is apparently part of the plot of the game, we have zero info on that, other than the devs being aware that these are big questions.
Depending on the ending, It could be that she was Empress for awhile but Political life drove her mad and she went off to become a Witcher, Or if the ending was her going off to become a Witcher and here we are. If your Witcher 3 ending had her dying then maybe Trial of Grasses along with magic is what brought her back. I'm not saying this is what it will be, just stating there are options.
They butchered my excitement yesterday, How is ciri a full Witcher and can drink potions as well? This makes no sense, i feel like CDPR are changing lore just to appeal to certain groups of people... Anyway i hope im wrong and they have a good explination
RIGHT?? My personal game-theory is that this is actually fake ciri, hence why she can do magic and might've gone through the trials. Also explains the slight voice change and the fact she doesnt use her elder blood powers. Is it out of left field? Sure But it'd be a much cooler reveal and actually aknowledge fake ciri's storyline in the games.
The school of the cat trial of grass can be applied to women, that's partly why its members are so unstable. And Ciri for a long time had a school of the cat medallion on her, picked up from one of their members, now she clearly has a lynx medallion. And felines were always depicted as magical creatures. Ciri also has extra resistance thanks to her elder blood. This is all established lore. Now I'm more curious as to why she went through the trial of grass.
My only complain is that Ciri character model looks really different to the one of the witcher 3 (i know that is older but the face looks way different). But is a CGI trailer so i cant take it to serious.
Gotta remember that Geralt's face didn't look the same between cinematics and the release. They changed their mind on his face throughout development :)
@@grzegorzhordejuk2172 It is my first, she should not be able to do that since she did not go through any mutagen trials. Also, where is the badass elden blood shit, she is supposed to be older here, stronger and more experienced. The face isn't too much of an issue for me, she still looks nice, I would prefer the Witcher 3 face but that can be fixed with Nodders (giga chad modders). She looks way hotter and more beautiful in 3, but it is aight.
Maybe face rigging for the actress as well as still getting grasps on UE5. Do we know who it is, I actually like the way she voiced this trailer. She really seems like she's been on quite a journey over the years (still definatley the beginning of her journey) her tone definitely seems to really be like one who has seen the stupidity and evil of humans as a species as well as more aware of how deadly these monsters can be instead of the still somewhat naive curious and kinda optimistic girl she was in W3. She was aware of how cruel the world was but this seems like she really had her eyes open to it now. Gonna have to wait for gameplay glad at least they didng showcase a year of anything. Just to show that it's in the works and some idea of how UE5 is gonna be treating them. Awesome to see a third person fantasy rpg game is coming with my card game.
Look, I was ready to hate on this game over Geralt, but having seen this, I can't. This was always the goal, for Ciri to come into her own and to be a Witcher. Even when she was a kid, when she was raised by the Witchers and grew up in their world. This is the next chapter. I just hope she didn't lose her Elder Blood Flash-like powers completely.
I could be mistaken as it's a little difficult to tell just from this trailer, but it appears this will be set after the events of the novels. Post Lady of the Lake. If that's the case, then lore be damned really. It's pretty much wide open, so long as they don't change the history. That means that sure, Ciri `could` possibly have endured the trial and it would just be a first, rather than a contradiction with the lore. However, there will be those who don't like it and that's just the way it is. You can't please all the people all the time.
The sections of Witcher 3 where Ciri was playable were the least interesting and fun parts for me. I loved playing as Geralt and having read the books and played the games, I simply see him as THE Witcher. Why does Ciri need more amazing stuff to be part of her character when she was literally the Empress and the saviour of the world in Witcher 3?
Most people don't get the empress ending most people easily get the witcher ending, as it's the easiest to get cause you have to actively be a dick to ciri and take her to the emperor to get the bad endings
Having read the Game Director's comments, they want the new saga to run the gamut of what it means to be a Witcher So it seems Ciri will go thru the trial, face repercussions, learn that hunting isn't easy, people are complicated etc Also they are planning to have different gameplay mechanics and choices
@@kaushalsuvarna5156 mate she already learnt all of those things and she's older so how exactly does this grown woman still need life lessons. This was a lazy choice
Really looking forward to Witcher 4 but it is too early to get hyped about it. I am confident that CDPR can create a great game I just hope that the release (whenever it comes) goes well.
I can sympathize with the concerns about her being a Witcher a bit. But the “confirming a canon ending” is nonsense. Every series including the Witcher has confirmed actions from a previous game. Even the famously vague elder scrolls. It’s such a non controversy
My excitement for the game just escalated dramatically. But I refuse to get lost in the hype again. I'll be following this closely, but I have no plans to pre-order at this time.
Maybe she went through and survived the Trial of the Grasses thanks to her Elder Blood. However the mutations also costed her a significant amount of her powers from Elder Blood.
I mean, it was always obvious that Ciri would be the next main protagonist as she is the focus and reason for the Witcher 3 game (and books) so it's only natural. I always felt they were setting up the new trilogy in the TW3. I am very excited to play as Ciri and I really hope Geralt will be a side character - maybe accompanying her and mentoring her or something. Even if they show him happy and relaxed in Toussaint and he dons his swords to come help her with a specific task. I don't care I'm stoked and can't wait.
I hope they dont explain away Ciri surviving the trial of the grasses with "because elder blood." It's too obvious, doesn't really explain anything and it would be a cop out. But we will see. I hope they cpme up with something more interesting.
I think it would be cool if her Elder Blood powers still exists, but works like God of War Rage of the TItans, you have bar meter, and you must manage and use carefully, it takes long to refill, and instant to drain it, but it's OP
@@Szilagyicsabaistvan That would be the only explanation that would make sense without breaking the lore. If she refused to use these powers because powerful entities - evil entities that may have been more powerful than her - that craved her powers - similar to the Wild Hunt - and she had to hid these powers in order to not get detected or get caught by these entities. That would be the only thing that would make sense with previous games and with the books. That still doesn't explain however how she would be able to to survive the trial of Grasses.
@@rpgadventurer32 Trial of Grasses can be explained by her having elder blood which makes her strong and able to survive it. She is not an ordinary woman.
So hyped! Also with how she casts that lightning attack it makes me wonder if she will kinda be like a hybrid between Geralt and Yennefer, like a witcher sorceress, since she did retrieve training from both. I think that would be so sick and open up a lot of room for how you want to play her and build variety!
Nice, I haven't seen a LastKnownMeal video in a while! I see quite a bit of hate from people. But I personally like it so far. I don't see her mutation and her magic use as "CDPR totally ignored canon." To me it's supposed to create intrigue about what the hell happened between the events of TW3 and this trailer. Instead of just going "that's not how this works," I'm interested in finding out how this new Ciri came to be. This direction IMO has a lot of potential in the writing. Like how did this happen or why? Or would Geralt really let this happen or did he even know? Do we have to look for Geralt at some point in the game and he'd have playable sections? I just think this is more intriguing to me than "she's the Lady of Space and Time, and she's OP." I'm guessing Ciri will only have her Elder Blood powers as unlockable ultimate skills further in the game. But other than that, I love that instead of just a teleporting goddess, she's very much a Geralt but with magic powers (reminiscent of Yen's teachings). I think writing-wise, it's a good way for things to come full circle. It makes Geralt and Yen feel like they matter more even when they're not present. If you ask me, Ciri just going off on her own path above everyone else would feel like you'd pushing the Ciri protagonist plot too far that it would probably not feel like the same Witcher story. It has to feel grounded, not a power fantasy. It would take away from this story if the protagonist is overpowered and there are no real stakes.
Thanks for watching and I mean yeah when it comes to Ciri being a Witcher its interesting, I mean they didnt make a bunch of random people run around as witchers, so far it seems to me she is the only one who managed it, maybe The Trials have something to do with the loss of the powers, for that I guess we have to wait to find out. But yeah I mean you wouldnt want to play as full power Ciri (as a witcher), it would make zero sense.
We have known the direction this game was going to take for years now, but now that it has been revealed, it didnt hit like I expect it would have if Geralt were still the main protag. I WANT to play as Geralt, I suppose I can accept playing as Ciri.
I’m disappointed I don’t see a way where they can rewrite the lore to make sense other that we wanted Ciri so we made Ciri. I really didn’t want to play as her as whatever excuse they make just won’t work. Also I was really hoping we would stray away from the Geralt timeline and either go back or forward in time and have a different story to follow.
Its a clear sign if playing it safe. John Marston was a beloved character, Rockstar managed to crrate an even more loved character with Red Dead 2. Ciri as the protagonist sounds like, "we need someone people recognize"
@@thescooterbrownwhich it probably is. What R* managed was nothing short of amazing and they don't get anywhere near enough credit for pulling that off. It's very rare that a character like John can be replaced, if not surpassed. Not that developers shouldn't try as I'm a huge advocate for not playing as Shep in the Mass Effect but the decision to go with Ciri isn't entirely out of the blue when you consider what happened when they tried to replace Snake in MGS for example. Picture this. Imagine trying to Replace Kratos, Sam Fisher, Agent 47, Lara Croft ect. It would be so hard. This is more along the lines of R* going with Sadie for RDR3 or something. It's a safe option yeah but aside from that the likelihood of pulling off some random guy is like getting a Land Rover Defender through the eye of a needle as they would inevitably be compared to Geralt and of there's one thing the internet hates it's change. So aside from Ciri they could only really go with a character creator, which I'd have been in favour of as I like a good character creator but let's be honest, most people would play as a girl anyway. I know they're all on here moaning but let's be honest do you think any one of these lads has a girlfriend? There's more chance of finding intelligent life at a flat earth conversation so you can bet both your bollocks that these would have been the first to create a girl and mod her into bikini armour so it might as well be Ciri and that's a fairly logical conclusion for them to arrive at. I know people are pretending to be outraged by lore changes and that but that's all it is, pretending because the games were not faithful to the lore of the books so I'm not accepting that as argument unless it was a hill someone was fighting on during the original games
It feels like a lazy choice to be honest and I can feel shareholder interest all over this - "It's too risky so go with the safe option". In general I don't really play as female characters so that's also not my preference. However they explain it, this is looking like I'll have to pass on the game.
“That was a huge thing for us, to make that call [to mutate Ciri], not only for her, but for the game,” explains Małgorzata Mitręga, The Witcher 4’s executive producer. “But then it's so important and still leaves so much space for imagination, like when it happened, how it happened. It's just a tease showing something, but you don't know where you will experience it and how in the game. I think it's a huge change and I hope people did not expect it.”
I’m gonna start by saying that I liked Ciri as a character who is unique in her own right without being an actual Witcher. Trained by them, and with her own unique skills, but limited in true Witcher capability. So that said my initial reaction to this trailer first is I don’t want to play as ciri as that story is already concluded w/ Geralt. I expected to have separation from the previous installment with Geralt and his story . I’m well aware of her capability with being able to jump through time, and there are all kinds of justifications you could have for this and that, but she is tied to Geralt story in the same way that Robert Downey Jr. is tied to Tony Stark. You cannot separate them, it is established cemented in time. But just speaking specifically to this cinematic. It’s both very cool and worrisome . Again , I like Ciri but don’t want to return to the Witcher world playing as a chick as well as not a true Witcher. It would be like having a game where you storm the beach of Normandy in WW2, but you do so as a chick …. That just doesn’t feel right . Now They can make their justifications for their reasoning for her ,but that only speaks to my next reason why I don’t want ciri as the main protagonist. I want a fresh start approach that leaves the story of Geralt and its characters with their just perfect and thoughtful blood and wine ending with the dialogue of ‘ we’ve earned some rest ‘ as Geralt breaks the fourth wall and smiles to you the player ….. even the further ending with everyone around the table and making a toast to you the player with their finished story salute…. I can’t think of a better conclusion to that story/characters. A closing of one book while opening now a new book with a new chapter and a new school to meet all new characters with an all new experience. It feels like cdpr is falling into the trap like these other companies of using previously defined IP for the sake of a disingenuous safety net and end up messing with that predefined experience that shouldn’t be messed with. 🤞🤦♂️ I mean, we had this new school of the lynx reveal and the confirmation that Geralt story was done. And with that story, you have the conclusion to all of these characters that are a part of his story. So the instinctual thought here is that the creative artist are taking us back into this predefined world to experience something new with a new story and new characters and a new school. So now this just feels like lazy manipulative brand IP recognition and disingenuous retconning for trendy modern Day narratives. It’s forcing something unnecessary that was already concluded for the sake of a shorter development/release window time? Instead of just using this predefined world to create something new in it, you’re going to retcon and reuse predefined established characters in a different way🤦♂️ Last point I’ll make is for the sake of authenticity , this Witcher universe has a time And setting that has very established roles. Men have clearly defined roles as to the women. So for a female main protagonist, I would be more inclined to get behind the idea of being some witch or a sorceress as that would have authenticity. Ciri was a unique character and had a clear role as defined in the books as well. She was protected and trained by Witchers, but was not a true authentic Witcher and that was not her role. A Witcher is a clearly defined role for men . Small boys taken and put through dangerous life-threatening trials to be transformed into monster killing mutants that could never reproduce on their own. It is not a role for women as is clearly predefined from the source material itself. Which again just makes all this feel disingenuous n inauthentic. Anyway, thx LKM .
i find it fun how the theory that the 3 endings of the witcher 3 are canon, they just happen at different periods of time. i guess we will see what actually happened once the game is out. another thing i really like is that they seem to be sticking to the dark slavic ambiance, and i really enjoy this since it really is different than most other regular dark medieval fantasy worlds. one thing i dont really like that the name of the game is just the witcher 4, since it is a different saga i would have preferred something that stands out and is disassociated from the other games for new fans, especially if they continue the trend, it will be weird seeing "the witcher 7" its just too much
I predict 3 things 1. The conjunction of the spheres had a significant impact on the world, much more so than we could observe at the end of W3. The monster we see may be new or existing its hard to tell but I expect its taking advantage of a power vacuum caused by the fallout of the conjunction. 2. I think Nilfgaurd is collapsing or has already collapsed only based on the presumed time jump we see and the state of the empire at the end of the game. Likely torn apart from within. 3. If Im wrong about #1 itd predict that were are in a whole new part of the world that we havent seen yet. Ciri clearly has found a new witcher school and is likely something to do with her being able to become a withcer despite the previous evidence of a 100% female mortality rate in the trials. The trailer is possibly in velen based on the looks of things, but it could be that its taking place after the events of this new game.
This is an incomplete quote, pretty sure they said that they didn't want to reveal the "release date" 6 months prior. CDPR is publicly traded company, they have to reveal all their projects, as soon as they begin work on it. I mean they have also announced an entire CDPR in-house original IP, that won't come out untill next 7-10 years.
You're putting word in their mouths. They said they don't want to do aggressive marketing 2 years before release and only start the real marketing 6 months before release. However, they will give us some bread crumbs along the way. Stop being disingenuous. Don't expect to hear anything about this until 2026 at the earliest.
The fun Ciri that usually keeps her cool, the lady of time and space, trained by Yennefer with Magic powers based on the blood of elves book, suddenly loosing all of her powers and her cool, turning into a older Witcher with that can get cat eyes? Using basic Witcher signs?! And Drinking potion during the fight that could lose her life any minutes unlike Geralt that always prepares even in his trailers! Witches usually laugh at the basics Withers sings like they are insult to magic now Ciri with all of those capabilities using basic Witcher sings! They really tried to downgrade her push her into small Witcher box! Let's pray it turns out good. 🙏
It makes no sense at all. Mind you. I loved ciri in the twitcher 3. Same way i loved cat woman in Arkham city. Why would the next batman game be catwoman in a batsuit is what I ask CDPR.
@@connor56347 By keeping her cool I mean she never was a depressed sad disgruntled too serious Witcher she always in any hard part of the book tried to be an energetic person and yes I have played and read the whole books if you read the book you know Ciri always has her energy and passion! Even in her Comics Ciri is an energetic person that likes to joke around.
Why did they make Ciri go through the Trial of Grasses? I don't get it. There're so many lore contradictions in this trailer it simply left me confused. No hype whatsoever from my part.
Not even the worse part: How is she doing magic? The lightning thing wasn't even a sign, it was an actual spell. In the books she looses all magical ability, she can't do it at all anymore.
@toffsplace I can buy that. For one she had telportation magic in W3, so something must have reactivatrd her elder blood. Aside from that regular Witchers can use very limited sign magic. It's not too far fetched that her elder blood enhances her Witcher abilities to some extend. - But they need some heavy explaining to do for all of this. None of her found family wanted this fate for her so why and how did this happen?
From my point of view, it looks like the devs are just taking liberties with what Ciri's Elder Blood allows her to do, since it was always quite unclear in the books and previous games. My prediction is that they'll explain the new powers as "she activated the next level of her power when she ended the White Frost and it gave her all these extra abilities"
@@Alpha_Digamma Even in witcher 3 she cant do magic. Magic in the witcher universe has very set in stone rules. Yes, her elderblood did make her a magic source in the books and very powerful, but even by witcher 3 she couldn't do magic after what happened (I dont wanna spoil much). Her elderblood powers are not considered magic, they're literally just genetic powers she has and noone else can, hence why she has them even though she cant do magic. To me I find it odd to bring back her magic and have her use it instead of her teleporting abilities. The fight in the trailer would've been piss easy had she used her actual powers. But yeah, her even being allowed to take the trials (so she can use the potions) its completely out of left field. Her family would never allow them to.
@@Alexdeadman00 thats kinda sucky IMO but that might be it. Wierd not to see her trademark teleporting in the trailer though, even the gwent trailer had that.
I don't know, very mellow and unimaginative. Kept my expectations very low and low is all I'm geting. But alas, this is just a first look and I really hope it gets better (I also kinda know it won't..)
Seems like some people thought the games were canon events following the books. Even though CDPR already changed a bunch of things from the books. Ciri is a witcher now, whether you like it or not. There will be some sort of justification in the story for it and we'll have to wait and see what that is.
Oh the old moving goalpost. The "it's not happening"...then "it's happening but it's not a big deal"...then "it's here and you just need to deal with it". Funny how that just keeps repeating itself. They are free to change the lore, where it still makes sense in the story. When you start making changes, just for the sake of changing then that's lazy writing.
@@gemelwalters2942 As I said, they are not canon and they have already made changes in the previous games. The biggest one for me is they brought Regis back, and they wrote a justification for it. I didn't know how to feel about it at the time, but I did get over it. We will have to wait and see what story they come up with for this.
SO CONFLICTED with the Ciri choice here. Ultimately though, as long as it's fully explained - I'll be excited to play Witcher 4! However, I can't shake being confused on how this all happens. Elder blood? Like what happened???
I dont know, maybe this will be good, I got heavy reservations, and the trailer is surface level, it looks like Ciri having Signs, potion usage is all getting shoe horned in hard. But narratively this move misses a big thematic point and what a Witcher is about which is "sacrifice". From the books and Witcher 3 Ciri was a great supporting character, she had more impact in the books where in W3 she was a literal Mcguffin. But being a Witcher is more than the swords or monster knowledge which Ciri was raised or whatever forced rationale for the other mechanic gaps they will have, but ultimately with the sacrifices made from Witchers to fulfil a need in a society - the cost of their body and identity in mutations, their legacy in sterilisation, their desires for a life lived their way in a near monastic upbringing training and developing and a normal reputation and respect in society and frankly love considering the way society hates Witchers but they are a needed evil. All this and the only compensation is coin, because really you could never really payback what these Witchers gave so society could be safe. None of this gravitas lies within Ciri as a character, game mechanically I got no idea how they will approach the heightened hearing/smell that comes with mutation but all this seems such basic and dead end choice. Honestly was kinda hoping a brand new Witcher, clean slate for CDPR to worldbuild or even a younger Vesemir in a more golden age of Witchers but hey we need to use the most accessible girl boss for a main protag, not good enough to have great girl bosses as supporting characters and Ciri, Yennefer, Triss nearly all the female characters in the previous games and books were. Ironically this trailer kinda clearly shows the typical modern subversion is hard at work as Ciri literally stops a sacrifice, surprised the monster didnt have long white hair on its head or was a pale furred werewolf. Oh well CDPR in name only these days.
Killing Monsters initial reveal trailer for the witcher 3 was just under 2 years before release. CDPR has more than twice as many people working on this than TW3 as well. I'd say a mid 2026 release is more likely than 4 years
Man I've been out of the loop again and checked out of the leaks and rumormill so the trailer yesterday, made my day. What a surprise that was! edit - Also, I cant be the only one that heard the Bauk say "you can't change fate.." right?? I wonder what exactly he means, cuz it feels less connected to the sacrifical virgin girl and much more specific to Ciri's fate.
@LastKnownMeal Curious what you think of the black haired Elf in the wanted poster on the board? It looks like they have pointy ears so I'm assuming it's another Elf.. but can't be sure. Looking for a second opinion
I doubt they'd kill Geralt off-screen. I personally don't think we'll see him in this game, or at least we won't see him in any major capacity. This game seems to make the Witcher Ciri ending canon, which it can do, but it can't as easily make any of Geralt's endings canon (remain Witcher or retire in Toussaint). It wouldn't be fair to players who don't have Blood and Wine to make that ending canon, but wouldn't make sense to players who have the DLC to make the base game ending canon. Because of this, I think they'll have to leave Geralt's fate ambiguous, so they can't involve him heavily in the upcoming game.
To he fair most endings where geralt survives with a partner states he settles down but not that he retires fully from taking contracts, I think triss ending states he does and the yennefer ending doesn't explicitly states that he does, but also doesn't say he doesn't either
@@RazorNivekUltimate9000 that's my point. In order to preserve that, they can't reveal details about Geralt's life otherwise they'd have to choose one over the others.
Why would you expect to play as Geralt? They literally said his main story is over. Also, go and watch the Killing Monsters reveal trailer for TW3 and tell me Geralt doesn't look weird and a bit different from the final look in the game.
@@connor56347 Yes I know they mentioned a few years ago that Geralt would not be the protagonist, but for me if you have to leave Geralt (for which there as still a lot of content from the books than can still be used) then it should be to create a completely different story with completely different characters like a different witcher school, not returning characters like Ciri (by the way Ciri is not even a Witcher as she never went through the "Trial of The Grasses") Anyway it's just my opinion, regarding the TW3 trailer that is indeed a fair point.
Geralt "Killing monsters..." Ciri "There are no gods here, there are only monsters!" Just like her (surrogate) father, she's out there killing monsters. And often times the real monsters are humans.
She : > lost nearly all her powers after saving the world from the white frost > potentially started her own school of witchers and made it closer to her ideals and ways of going about the witcher life > undergone the Trial of Grasses and survived thanks to her exceptionnal genetics offered by the ancient blood making her the most exceptionnal woman in the Witcher universe
None of this retcons her lore? Name calling is pathetic. You can love Ciri as a character and not enjoy woke content. Cdpr has proven they can tell a damn good story and that they love the lore.
Certainly not buying a new gpu to run this. Last gpu I bought was 7800xt … Next 3 years I’ll buy a gpu so what ever games comes out if my current gpu can’t run it properly according to specs I won’t buy the game .
PS5 is over halfway through its life cycle already. If Cyberpunk 2077 was anything to go by from trailer to full game, we may be waiting a good 5-10 years for this. Ill wait for a release date before considering an upgrade. As far as how revealing this trailer is, it's safe to assume that ciri is a fully complete witcher, mutations, and all. In witcher 3, there is a small dialogue between ciri and geralt if you drink a couple of potions in the snowball fight at Kaer Morhen. Ciri will say "thats cheating, i can't take those!". Even the hints in the loading screen explain that non-witchers connot take witcher potions due to them being completely fatal. To further this, vesimir even comments during the trail of grasses on Uma/ava'llach that certain mutations are needed to complete the process to become a full witcher, and the ones given to Uma are only the ones that allow the mutation process to begin and not complete the process. Uma did not transform into ava'llach and have the famous witcher cat eyes either. Everything the witcher 3 explains on the trails means that we can safely assume that ciri at some point did undergo the trails. As for surviving those trails, as its stated in lore that no female has ever undergone the trails and survived, i do belive that ciri having the elder blood may be the only reason she survived the trails. I do not wish to see a land full of female witchers now just because ciri has done it. It has been stated many times that it can not be done and was risky for anyone, but only males could have a chance to survive it. As for speculation on ciri not showing any elder blood powers in the trailer, it's possible that the witcher mutations have taken away a large portion of her abilities. Witcher mutations are said to rewrite the original person and open them up to the mutations given to them during the trails, in turn giving them abilities beyond that of humans and monsters. These mutations could have stunted the elder blood. It appears she may have lost her ability to move through space and time just to dodge like she did in witcher 3. Judging by the magic ciri is using in the trailer, it's also safe to assume that she has completed some form of further training for her magic, either from yennifer, triss, or a third party. In the best ending of witcher 3, ava'llach survives, and ciri becomes a witcher. It's highly possible that Ava'llach could have kept his word from the third game and taught ciri how to control her magic. With the lightning magic she uses on the creature, it does remind me of yennifer. I would like to believe that after the events of the third game, ciri joined geralt and yennifer at corvo bianco in toussaint for a short while. There are many ways this could be taken. There is obviously a cannon ending for the witcher 3, especially at this point, but i am seriously hoping storywise that geralt finally got his happy ending. I dont want to see a "last of us" situation where geralt just dies. I can't wait to see where this adventure takes ciri and what every has been up to in the time the game takes place. Whist i was hoping to play as geralt again, seeing ciri as the protagonist is the logical best step forward for the series. I just hope we get no DEI nonsense.
I think the sign was Heliotrope. But I'm wondering if when she "sacrificed" herself to the whitefrost, if she lost her powers then. Also I'm assuming she was able to go through the trials because of her elder blood. Why she went through the trials though, maybe so people would stop being after her for her unborn child. Now she can't have children. Idk, I wonder what the plot will be though, and who or what the "Big Bad" will be. Can't wait!
I really hoped we would creat our own witcher after the amazing job they did with cyberpunks character creation but If we had to play any character other than geralt than it had to me ciri I guess. I really hope we can see the ofiri region in this game because I always wondered what it looked like and Ive heard they planned to actually make it an expansion for the witcher 3 but canceld it.
Changing a long-running series from an old man to a young woman didn't work out great for Netflix ☠️. It may be a natural story progression, but Geralts' world view and dry humor make the games and books what they are
Aweful lot of speculation against cold hard facts. Sapkowski said Geralt was the main character and Cavill, who also read the books, left because it did not focus on the main protagonist and ruined the original material, which apparently not many people read given the comments, like trying to explain away Ciri being a Witcher when she's an adult and didn't go through the Trial of Grasses, saying Ciri is the MC or claiming she "could be 80" is a stretch considering the Trial is what gives longevity besides very very far distant related elven blood which wouldn't factor
I'd really like the option to play as a guy tbh, i sort of feel like the option to create your character was going to be a thing since they revealed the new school, since only the cat school takes on boys and girls and non-Humans i think, maybe they wanted even more freedom with that so they came up with a new school. Oh well, i'm probably still going to play it
How its possible that Ciri can take potions if she isn't a real Witcher and she never went through the trial of grasses? This looks like a female version of Geralt than an older an experimented Ciri. I love The Witcher franchise, but with the DEI and ESG politics that CDPR is promoving, probably Ciri will be a girlboss mary sue who no needs no man, she will romance a black woman who use pronoums they/them and the main antagonist will be an straigth white male. Ok, maybe this is so much, CDPR is not like NETFLIX (yet), but i hope they don´t ruin the lore of The Witcher just for a fake "inclusion". The Witcher 3 is my favorite game, and i really hope this new game don't get ruined like The Last of Us Part 2 and Spiderman 2.
Also a reaction to the comments from the devs that you presented in the video - The comments contradict the trailer, they already broke the canon multiple times with this trailer, they already changed Ciri from the Witcher 3 and from any of the established endings! She's not supposed to be a full real Witcher! She's supposed to be the Lady of Space and Time!
I'm curious why she had a steel sword identical to Geralt's and the possible implications there 😬. Also since its a new monster and she has the new medallion I'm assuming she's aleady in kovir.
I was kind of hoping for making own Witcher, and having multiplayer elements, but I guess that's what the Witcher multiplayer project is for. Not that I wouldn't play this game, look quite sick if the graphics are anything close to what the trailer shows. And I think it's better marketing strategy not to have 2 competing titles doing same thing. Maybe we could get a sneak peak of the multiplayer Witcher in Game Awards, still? They said they'll release a new game in 2025 so my bet is on that Witcher multiplayer.

But maybe she is in more control of her powers now and knows what she's doing,
Great breakdown.
@@xaviannight3036 Even Cyberpunk had a very good story and characters, best thing about it actually.
4:40 That's sorcery, Yennefer teaches Ciri to draw power from the elements in one of the books, with her drawing water from a stream in the book.
Blkan mythology is so fire. I want to see more higher vampires.
At first I was not liking the Ciri design, but after watching it so many times, now I am really starting to love this design.
Plus let's have in mind this is pretty rendered and so much early than the actual game. I do think that there will be a lot of changes.

My personal game-theory is that this is actually fake ciri, hence why she can do magic and might've gone through the trials.
Also explains the slight voice change and the fact she doesnt use her elder blood powers.
Is it out of left field? Sure
But it'd be a much cooler reveal and actually aknowledge fake ciri's storyline in the games.
It is Geralt disguised as Ciri
I mean its not like games 100% stuck to lore, they literally used made up witcher schools
@RazorNivekUltimate9000 So true!
Ciri drinking potions that are deadly to humans is my second complain.

I hope she did, would make her too OP.
Perfect continuation for me, and man does she look good in that Witcher armor
I could be mistaken as it's a little difficult to tell just from this trailer, but it appears this will be set after the events of the novels. Post Lady of the Lake. If that's the case, then lore be damned really. It's pretty much wide open, so long as they don't change the history. That means that sure, Ciri `could` possibly have endured the trial and it would just be a first, rather than a contradiction with the lore.
However, there will be those who don't like it and that's just the way it is. You can't please all the people all the time.

This is sure to be an interesting start to the next trilogy.
What lore rewrite? and its not like previous game f*cked with the lore
Its a clear sign if playing it safe. John Marston was a beloved character, Rockstar managed to crrate an even more loved character with Red Dead 2.
Ciri as the protagonist sounds like, "we need someone people recognize"
They have a tough task explaining
Let's see
@@thescooterbrownwhich it probably is.
There was a leak prior that their was going to be a CGI trailer of the Witcher 4 at the VGA so was not surprised
I’m pretty disappointed that it’s Ciri tbh
“Vesimer definitely won’t be taking on new students” 💀
“That was a huge thing for us, to make that call [to mutate Ciri], not only for her, but for the game,” explains Małgorzata Mitręga, The Witcher 4’s executive producer. “But then it's so important and still leaves so much space for imagination, like when it happened, how it happened. It's just a tease showing something, but you don't know where you will experience it and how in the game. I think it's a huge change and I hope people did not expect it.”
I'm so exited to finally have Ciri as the protagonist, it always felt like the perfect continuation after Geralt.
It would be like having a game where you storm the beach of Normandy in WW2,
but you do so as a chick ….
🤞🤦♂️
I mean, we had this new school of the lynx reveal and the confirmation that Geralt story was done.
Instead of just using this predefined world to create something new in it, you’re going to retcon and reuse predefined established characters in a different way🤦♂️
Last point I’ll make is for the sake of authenticity , this Witcher universe has a time And setting that has very established roles.
No Crossbow but you have that chain.
I will gladly accept the trade, didnt vibe with crossbow all that much in W3 anyway besides some situational moments to use it.
@@LastKnownMealit only good at shooting drowner ass underwater lol
So hyped for Witcher content from you 😎
i find it fun how the theory that the 3 endings of the witcher 3 are canon, they just happen at different periods of time. i guess we will see what actually happened once the game is out.
another thing i really like is that they seem to be sticking to the dark slavic ambiance, and i really enjoy this since it really is different than most other regular dark medieval fantasy worlds.
one thing i dont really like that the name of the game is just the witcher 4, since it is a different saga i would have preferred something that stands out and is disassociated from the other games for new fans, especially if they continue the trend, it will be weird seeing "the witcher 7" its just too much
No different to the original Witcher Game being called "The Witcher". Wasn't until 2 & 3 that they got specific names.
I predict 3 things
"We won't announce the next Witcher game sooner than 6 months before release, we don't want to repeat the Cyberpunk 2007 mistakes"
They announced like 5 games 2 years ago
If they manage a release in 2025, it will exactly ten years after the Witcher 3. :)
I suppose they meant the release date because they already announced all of these games(Witcher 4, Witcher 1 remake, Cyberpunk sequel) ages ago.
Ciri always keeping her cool? Have you read of played any of the books or games? lol
It's confirmed she can use Sorcery as well as having the Witcher Mutations.
I was hoping ciri would be the protagonist. I’m so hyped!
Playstation 6 seller. Pretty hyped.
VERTAINLY WASN'T JUST A CAT POTION AS THE VOICES SHE WAS HEARING STOPPED AS WELL AS SOON AS THE POTION TOOK EFFECT. aND I DONT THINK CAT DOES THAT
Why did they make Ciri go through the Trial of Grasses? I don't get it. There're so many lore contradictions in this trailer it simply left me confused. No hype whatsoever from my part.
Not even the worse part:
How is she doing magic?
4:20 it's a kikimore...
Edit: No, CDPR has confirmed it is the bauk (whatever that might be)...
I don't know, very mellow and unimaginative. Kept my expectations very low and low is all I'm geting. But alas, this is just a first look and I really hope it gets better (I also kinda know it won't..)
I didn't think they would show anything yet
Seems like some people thought the games were canon events following the books. Even though CDPR already changed a bunch of things from the books. Ciri is a witcher now, whether you like it or not. There will be some sort of justification in the story for it and we'll have to wait and see what that is.
It’s called being a hack, an easy not buy
Why Ciri? Her story is over, just like Geralt's. I'd much rather play as my own Witcher.
How many years we thinking until release? My guess is 4
Killing Monsters initial reveal trailer for the witcher 3 was just under 2 years before release. CDPR has more than twice as many people working on this than TW3 as well. I'd say a mid 2026 release is more likely than 4 years
My guess is it could come out around at the end of 2027. But I wish that CDPR takes their time and not repeating Cyberpunk 2077's bad launch.
2028
Man I've been out of the loop again and checked out of the leaks and rumormill so the trailer yesterday, made my day. What a surprise that was!
edit - Also, I cant be the only one that heard the Bauk say "you can't change fate.." right??
I wonder what exactly he means, cuz it feels less connected to the sacrifical virgin girl and much more specific to Ciri's fate.
It was definitely a surprise, still can't believe it didn't leak haha, and yeah Bauk playing with someones emotions, no wonder it says that to her
@LastKnownMeal Curious what you think of the black haired Elf in the wanted poster on the board? It looks like they have pointy ears so I'm assuming it's another Elf.. but can't be sure. Looking for a second opinion
Sweeeet. Thanks lkm!
looks like an elder kikimoora monster
@@Alexdeadman00 nope all three Endings are canon
To he fair most endings where geralt survives with a partner states he settles down but not that he retires fully from taking contracts, I think triss ending states he does and the yennefer ending doesn't explicitly states that he does, but also doesn't say he doesn't either
@@RazorNivekUltimate9000 that's my point. In order to preserve that, they can't reveal details about Geralt's life otherwise they'd have to choose one over the others.
Bro you hear Geralts voice at the end and in an interview on IGN they litterly say it’s VERY likely Geralt will be around for a long time
It's already confirmed he's in the game by the voice actor lmaoo.
this time ciri will kill the last sister
I am disappointed I wanted either a customisable protagonist or Geralt.
Ciri's new chin already tells me the direction this game is going
Thank God Cdpr pulled that bs with Cyberpunk in 2020. Now I don't have to feel the pain of a potentially bad witcher game
womp womp
Why would you expect to play as Geralt? They literally said his main story is over. Also, go and watch the Killing Monsters reveal trailer for TW3 and tell me Geralt doesn't look weird and a bit different from the final look in the game.
@@connor56347 Yes I know they mentioned a few years ago that Geralt would not be the protagonist, but for me if you have to leave Geralt (for which there as still a lot of content from the books than can still be used) then it should be to create a completely different story with completely different characters like a different witcher school, not returning characters like Ciri (by the way Ciri is not even a Witcher as she never went through the "Trial of The Grasses")
Anyway it's just my opinion, regarding the TW3 trailer that is indeed a fair point.
@@thescooterbrown I disagree, I think they did a great job with the V character and for me they proved that they can pull it off

Ciri "There are no gods here, there are only monsters!"
Just like her (surrogate) father, she's out there killing monsters. And often times the real monsters are humans.

> lost nearly all her powers after saving the world from the white frost
> potentially started her own school of witchers and made it closer to her ideals and ways of going about the witcher life
> undergone the Trial of Grasses and survived thanks to her exceptionnal genetics offered by the ancient blood making her the most exceptionnal woman in the Witcher universe

These were my initial thoughts, I hope this is the explanation as it makes the most sense to me with minimal retcons.

Certainly not buying a new gpu to run this. Last gpu I bought was 7800xt … Next 3 years I’ll buy a gpu so what ever games comes out if my current gpu can’t run it properly according to specs I won’t buy the game .
In IGN interview they revealed a lot of things, you should go through that!
Can't wait!
Hope geralt has just a tiny role and he goes back to Corvo Bianco, and enjoy his retirement.
Did Ciri go to Skyrim universe or why she look like a dark elf LOL
Did anyone realize her eyes are like a cats?I think she underwent the mutations.
hearts of stone vibes
I really hoped we would creat our own witcher after the amazing job they did with cyberpunks character creation but If we had to play any character other than geralt than it had to me ciri I guess. I really hope we can see the ofiri region in this game because I always wondered what it looked like and Ive heard they planned to actually make it an expansion for the witcher 3 but canceld it.
Hi. Good job :)
Ciri is no Witcher, they decided to go with their own story, well they should go ahead and do that with their own audience.
I dont care about Ciri or her story tbh and wanted a new witcher
The villagers killed the girl, if you look at the father he was beaten up. lIke he was trying to defend her.
Changing a long-running series from an old man to a young woman didn't work out great for Netflix ☠️. It may be a natural story progression, but Geralts' world view and dry humor make the games and books what they are
She is a lot older here. She could be in her 80s. We don't know.
lol. excuse me but Ciri is as much main character as Geralt is, so what u're saying is simply not true.
Man, love it... scared for my old ass 3070 though lol, gotta upgrade. Looks fuckin amazing.
Ciri got hit in the face with that DEI/ESG stick.
It reminds me of the witcher 1 striga trailer.
I really like Ciri, but it's weird they went with the most powerful character in the Witcher universe. Should be a fun time though.
I haven’t finished Witcher 3 😅 gotta finish this game soon
Mate they've already broke canon multiple times in the games anyway bet you weren't mad then tho...
