NEVER TOO SMALL Sydney Minimalist Small Apartment - 46sqm/495sqft

- In redesigning this Chippendale warehouse apartment Folk Studio, and interior designer Mariah Burton, stripped the space bare and started from scratch. With the aim of giving the owners a first home they could grow into, she draw inspiration from the things they loved. Extending the kitchen out into a workspace so they could work from home, and shaping a large sofa around the protruding walls. Everything in the home carries a sense of purpose and function from the muted palette to the lovingly restored shutters and doors.

So, from watching many of these videos, I have learnt that to create lovely harmonius small living spaces you need 2 things:
1. An architect with a calm voice
2. An Aesop hand wash
why is this so accurate!
😆 the chill music helps too
3. Money
Don’t forget juvenile vocal fry.
@@garrynull6812 tbf a studio apartment in Chippendale is pretty cheap as far as buying property in Sydney goes
Designer: the clients are in their early 20s...
Me in my mid 20s: * sad introspection *
Probably thanks to their dads tho
I'll be 25 when I graduate, so will probably be able to afford a house when I turn 28 or something, so sad
@@inclinedmanometer either that or they're youtubers haha
Why so cynical? Mortgage and savings might as well do
@@architecclp2647 28 is quite young in the grand scheme of things, specially if you graduate at 25. Most people won't marry before their 30s, so you're actually doing well.
The shutters are such a nice touch. Makes the bedroom feel like an oasis. Everything really is in the details!
You mean the shutters that were apart of the original design that were just cleaned up & repainted?
Yes they are beautiful 😍😍😍
just be wary that if you like to cook and going in fresh sheets in the evening is important. having the room that close may bring in unpleasant odors
The designers voice is just so beautiful and soothing
Omg Wayne
I didn't know you were into house design
I thought the same
Can you say vocal fry?
Fancy seeing you here!
@@PabloEmanuel96 same, that was unexpected (and lovely)
You know the clients have made it when they have an apartment in their mid 20s, in Sydney, with an Aesop hand wash.
I've had college dorm rooms bigger than that! 😆 I personally wouldn't say they "made it."
@@jannelaineeleodinmuo2442 you can own hostel dorms now?

i've seen Aesop products on other videos as well, maybe it's a sponsor... thing? idk but every time i see them i'm reminded of how unattainable these aparments are for a mortal like me lmao
They don’t have a bathroom, or at least it’s so horrendous that they didn’t want to show it.
The sofa looks uncomfortable. Like the cushions will fall everywhere if someone sit there
I was thinking yeah but is the sofa comfy??
Mmmm idk, my cousins sofa has these weird things under the cushions that sticks them to sofa frame so they don’t move
What about the work chair. Who works on a wood barstool? xD
@12natizinha, I agree - I would have chosen one or two larger size seating and back cushions. But, they don't have a tv to watch. They live in Sydney, so possibly live outside their home more. And the designer talked about her clients liking a Japanese and Scandi aesthetic. So I think the multiple cushions on the seating reflect that. They also add some visual texture to the space.
Agree. I think they will find it to be non functional. It is beautiful tho!
the way you guys get the people who are showcasing to talk soft so the mood fits so well >
Noticed that, too. 👍
I don't even think I like furniture but with that voice I just might
The before and after feels like two very different spaces.
The changes seem very simple yet it made a lot of difference.
It's really all down to choosing suitable furnishings. Small space needs small furniture with simple design. And storage to stow away all the clutters is also crucial.
I love this apartment, it’s shaped so unique! But I would see myself spilling water from the dishes and overflowing my work space
So true. I was thinking the same
Was looking for this comment. Same thoughts.
You can put a glass there as a border
Exactly. I'd move the workspace to the balcony and have opaque rolling blinds put in for when it's too sunny.
Please do another update with the bathroom!
Yes, please.
Danish and Japanese design goes so well together
They're very similar.
I love the shutters! They make the space, so much character.
They also allow air to come into the bedroom at night while keeping light out. I never would have thought to do it myself, but completely matches the styling of the apartment.

I like apartment designs like this, but working in that high chair with that iMac looks extremely uncomfortable
Tony Pugliese really? I luv it tho!
that couch also looks uncomfortable. but the whole space looks very nice
They can always opt to work at the dining table. But that kitchen bench is always useful as extra cooking prep space
I don’t know of an ergonomic chair that would fit this aesthetic.
@@thatRANDOMperson1000 maybe a Saarinen tulip armchair would work better
A divider between the kitchen sink and computer might help.
The video : 49sqm « very small » appartement
Me : *laughs in parisian*... *cries uncontrollably*
Legit my appartement in paris was 22sqm in the 12th i stayed there for a shit and fucked right off to the suburbs where i’m from and belong haha
sans compter qu'il semble vraiment petit pour 49m2... le mien fait +/- 46m2 (à Bruxelles ;) avec le même genre de disposition, et parait nettement, nettement plus grand
Ohh please show the bathroom on an upcoming episode. This space is absolutely brilliant, I could imagine myself living there. The designer sure knows what she's doing! BRAVO
No one ever has art on their walls. I couldn't live without being surrounded by art.
i know right? it wouldn't hurt to put at least a painting on the wall, it seems so bare. its nice though but it seems too calm
i think the homes are often staged to give off a neutral aesthetic so that the viewer can impart and project their own tastes without being distracted by the home owners' tastes etc
Try this:
ua-cam.com/video/nBq89b9ZRQw/v-deo.html
@@zoegranville7607 That makes sense.
I have 3 brick walls in my studio...for me thats enough texture for my eyes...I should do a studio apt tour
There are many other similar channels on UA-cam but this one stay on the topic all the time, with only a few minutes length and a lot of details in it. Great videos all the time!
so true, under 10 minutes and too the point.
Yay!! A Black person! Always makes me happy 😊
I love how her outfit blends so well with the space - the colour and comfy cutting
I love the way this video was edited, plenty of time for the viewer to really observe and take in the details! No rapid cutting to random blown up detail, shaking camera etc... love it!
Really great to see a black creative on the show!
i wish universities/colleges watched these kind of videos, so they could improve their dorms. seriously, if u told me this was my dorm room i wouldn't complain. it would look better, it'll probably be cheaper for both the student and the school, and it's just seems like a better living environment.
the designer's voice is so soothing... I was having a bad day and it was so nice to hear her talk
Really puts into perspective how poor I am. I grew up with my parents in an apartment that size, and we always felt blessed to have such a big surface :')
so happy to finally see a POC designer.

I love how many architect on this channel keep using a full IKEA kitchen over and over again. Voxtorp matt white fronts are so noticable. :)
We loved creating this space - thank you for all the lovely comments.
First time seeing a black architect's work featured. Love to see it! 😊🙌🏾
Thank you!
I really love how the designer kept the internal walls and everything the same and just repaired things that were already in there. Some might say "well, it's not that impressive, all she did was repaint some shutters" but I think we should get out of the mindset that you have to make a renovation a huge project and totally replan the space. The original apartment layout worked here, and simple things like repairing and repainting the shutters are not only economically and environmentally smart decisions, it still contributes to the new look of the apartment - the before and after pictures were so different, even though the bones of the space were the same. In many ways I think it is harder to design within existing parameters of internal walls than to knock everything down and start from scratch, but Mariah Burton has done a great job with this space.
What I like about this channel: consistent format (blueprint is a great touch), minimalist and light theme, smart use of space, showcasing architects and interior designers I would never have heard of. There's so many people and businesses you are helping out - bravo!
One of the big compromises here is the workspace. For one, kitchen counters are pretty far off from the ideal height of a desk in terms of ergonomics. The second thing is the melding of the work zone with the sofa hangout area, which is not ideal. The apartment is a really beautiful space though.
I think if they had a tv, the closeness between workspace and living would be a bigger problem than it is - it's looking like they use the sofa as a space enclosed within itself. I suppose most of us see the sofa as one corner of a space which faces the tv area! Plus i imagine they might potentially use that large pc monitor for work, but also to watch films if ever needed
That depends actually. As a tall person I get a lot of back discomfort from working on the usual desk height, while my knees often hit the table underside. Ergonomics isn't necessarily a one size fits all.
@@jcquing True... In the video however is looks like they use a barstool with a footrest to solve the high desk situation. It doesn't have any adjustability, so no extra points for ergonomics. And since you can't reach the ground while sitting there, and it doesn't swivel or roll, it's probably a struggle to get out of too.
Whether it's a good compromise or not I'd say mostly depends on how much time is spent working there.
I personally just wouldnt feel comfortable having my computer that close to the sink
I also love the beige outfit the designer was wearing.
This is stunning. As a person in her mid 20s, I wish we could have an idea of how much these renovations cost. I'd imagine that the price of the apartment allowed for some money to go towards renovations, but I'm so curious to know how much that actually was -- especially for a couple in their early 20s.
@@velyvely6479 Lol mate, the median Aussie yearly wage is like $67k AUD a year. The median 1 bed apartment for Chippendale is around $650k. So that's 10x median income. Plus renovations (which are quite expensive at the moment because of the global lack of supplies). And how did someone in their early 20s manage to save a 10-20% deposit?
@@BW-bh9he wealthy parents? :p
Has to be wealthy parents. That apartment is 46sqm, no reputable bank will give a home loan for a property less than 50sqm; which, I believe, also rules out accessing any of the first home buyers grant schemes.
I'd guess mum and dad had an investment property that went empty thanks to the border closures (Chippendale has a big international student population in normal times) and they're 'renting' aka mortgage to the bank of mum and dad with the responsibility of doing renos on it.
@@annawozniak7192 LMAO 🤣🤣🤣Great answer!
Minimum $20,000 in renovations
The shutters are so much prettier than curtains. Bravo!
finally, finally, FINALLY, a real small apartment. Not a storage closet with a couch... Very beautiful and livable.
the shutters create a big open window feeling without the danger of thieves and bugs QUQ
what a beautiful home
I love this space!
I AM SO OBSESSED WITH TINY HOUSES and SMART HOMES. I live in a small space too and did it up as nicely and cheaply as I could but I'm obsessed with authentic ones. I want to move to the states just to live in a tiny home
Hey accent is making me so homesick 😭
But also, I love how they cleaned up and reused so many features of the original home. Way too many designers/people rip everything out, send it all to the dump, then put in all new items. Seriously. Reuse.
I agree that the designer was very smart to make such well thought out changes that did not require tearing out functional walls, doors, etc. Reuse!
poor ficus lyrata, it is probably not getting enough sunlight, its leaves are starting to turn brown
I have 3 giant fiddle leaf fig trees and i thought the same thing! They should swap its position with the monstera plant they have. Fiddles need bright light, monstera plants can tolerate low light conditions
Yeeaaaah that's super foolish design that guy is a goner there. Also: Monstera + small apartment = foolish.
The rubber plant in the corner won't do great either.
Beautiful design, very poor plant design.
Yeah, it will definitely not survive in that spot.
I come back and watch this video over and over again just to listen to her voice
I love how your videos end with like 10 seconds of nothing, just the background noise of the person hanging out in the space. It's so relaxing, it's damn near ASMR.
Lovely minimalist design, without looking ‘sterile’. I understand that the bathroom was not shown due to it being a second stage renovation, but why was the balcony space omitted? It looks like quite a large space that adds quite a lot of living space to the home. I would have liked to see exactly how it is arranged. It looks as though the balcony is almost entirely closed in, like another room, but without addressing it, there’s no way to tell for sure.
Most of the projects are done in Australia. Are there projects done in Europe, I have this question because I feel like the small apartments in Europe are planed different so maybe the concept could change a bit. This channel is a great source of inspiration keep doing that we love it :)
@samia elmi in Paris or Stockholm there are many flats half the size of this one
There are some episodes filmed in Amsterdam if I recall correctly
@samia elmi i guess everyone in Paris is on a low quality life lol... most of my friends, who are in their late twenties, cannot afford more than 40 sqm (if you're a couple), and i think some of the flats they live in would really benefit from a nice renovation similar to this one, making it probably a bit more bearable - the thing is, most people rent their flats, and the landlords don't really care about making significant changes because it's so hard to get a decently prized flat in Paris that you take it even if it's in kinda bad shape, and I think it is the case in many other cities in Europe
I think it's just that in 2020, you just can't go and film anywhere :)
They did film few episodes in Europe but 2020 blocked...
One of the better designs on the channel!! Awesome
It really went from facebook marketpace apartment to pinterest-worthy minimalist inspiration
I love how warm and inviting the space is while still being so minimal. One of my favorite apartments on this channel
Imagine washing a spoon in the sink and the water from the tap hits the spoon at full blast and before you know it a quick stream of water veers to the left. Bye bye iMac.
Was thinking the same thing... Probably need some sort of incline or a rubber stopper to stop any water runoff.
I don't know why but this made me laugh so hard

The shutters are truly the highlight. Waking up in bed and opening them to rest and enjoy the sun sounds like a dream

Ash Tanya It looks like you can breathe well in this apartment!
It may "LOOK" light and fresh, but all in all extremely impractical and cold.
I Loved how they extended the kitchen cabinet, it makes more space functional and it becomes in an extraordinary work station. Is one of my favorites apartments in small spaces.
What I liked is that there were a lot of elements that were ‘repaired’ instead of being replaced completely
This interior designer is very calm and not pretentious as some come off. Charming woman. Great style.
I love how calm the NTS video series is. I love this designer as well she clearly knew what she was doing.

I'm inspired right now thanks to her i'm not scared to live in small apartment!
This is beautiful... J'adore !
I enjoyed the video.
It's so funny how a lot of people think a 46 sqm apartment is ''small'' (and a cause for unhappiness). In some countries in Europe this is the norm (around 50 sqm - of course, if you're rich, you can buy mansions or much larger apartments). People are used to this and happy. I live in such an apartment and I feel perfect in it. I live in a beautiful neighbourhood, with a lot of green spaces - I see them all around when I look out the window. The utilities are cheap, compared to those for a house - I have friends who own houses but in the autumn/winter they move back to their apartments because they can't afford to pay them. Actually, now that a lot of people lost their jobs (unfortunately) or their businesses aren't profitable anymore, they're trying to sell their houses. or even worse, I have friends who bought their houses through a bank loan and then they lost the jobs they thought were secure and now the bank took their house and they still have to pay money for it.
So I think it's wise to start ''small'' and only if you're sure you can afford ''big'' go for it.
I love the space and color palette 😍 but definitely the couch looks like your bottom would be vibrating after awhile

I agree and it tends to move a lot.
Yes not cosy. Pretty but not comfy
I live in Chippendale, spaces are small, but i love it here. 😍
I like the kitchen layout (2:18). It's the perfect workflow for right handed cook. Sink (clean and wash ingredients) -> Space for cutting and preparation -> stove (it's easy to add food with your left hand but steer with right!) -> And again some space just for serving that has to be dry and clean! It seems to be an obvious thing but in various places such workflow wasn't applied.
