He was being nice to gaming headsets... If you're reading this just go for a studio pair of headphones and you won't regret it! I have been with gaming headsets for 7 years... All it took was one pair of studio headphones - Never going back to gaming headsets.
I frequently do not agree with Techne I still watch his content because 1) It's important to support content creators 2) Listening to someone's opinion that doesn't align to yours removes you from the echo chamber. Kudos, Techne.
Absolutly in the same Boat as you! It really baffled my mind, how Techne threw shade at other content creators for praising the huntsman mini a few months ago and then praises the new corsair keyboards, which have horrible caseping and switches. BUT he is still entitled to his own opinion and it is always interesting to see his angle even if I fundamentaly disagree with like 50% of his takes. So kudos Techne :P
@@flashbits6614 thank you. but what corsair board are you talking about the k70 or mini did I praise? BTW I would take either over the Razer, gosh that thing is a clanky mess
I recently changed from my Arctis 5's which i've been using for a few years to the Phillips Fidelio X2 and V-Moda mic, the jump in audio quality is massive, the open backed nature of the X2's presents a fantastic soundstage, the V-Moda mic is like nothing i've tried so far, the combo destroys the Steelseries in every way. As for your reasoning as to why you prefer gaming headsets clearly isn't based on audio quality but as you said its easier to buy from the shelf, i'd say take a little bit more care and you'll be rewarded, I couldn't ever go back to a gaming headset ever again.
my x2hr's and shp9600's sound better than all 7(yes) of my gaming headsets with the exception of my beyerdynamics(sound like headphones).... i only use the gaming headsets when i need to talk to someone....
@@caliginousmoira8565 I just switched from a Razor Krakken X to the SHP9500s and they sound A LOT different. Almost too different for my taste. Seems like the highs are very pitchy and tingy and the bass difference is insane.... I know they will sound different because of the open/closed backs but I've heard the 9600s are a little better for bass and less tingy on the high? Would that be a better choice coming from the Razor headset?
@@andrewschafer2544 i would say so... if you can get the x2hr's or the shp9600(i like them both) they have good bass and the clarity on the x2's are amazing.
The biggest thing you will notice going to an audiophile setup is the musical qualities and natural tones they will bring to the table. Things just sound "better". I have been switching back and forth for years and other than the really high end gaming headsets ($200++) you will not get anywhere near the musical qualities of a $150 audiophile headset. They are not crazy hard to drive but do benefit from an amp both in terms of volume level and sound quality. Another thing is the long term durability of audiophile headsets, they are simply on another level and may last you years. There are people using their original HD 600's for over 20 years with minor parts replacements. Gaming headsets typically break on me in under 1.5 years usually due to the wire getting loose in the left earcup. Where gaming headsets win, besides price and simplicity, is IN GAME sound. You see pros use HyperX series headphones in FPS shooters for a reason. They just work. Mids and highs are a bit boosted and you can really get a sense of footsteps and audio cues. They are TUNED for this. It is almost the opposite of what makes music sound good. So choose wisely, or get both.
I'm also big into music and i can say hands down that the 990 Pro's beat any gaming headset for music. That's coming from someone has Arctis Pro Wireless and Blackshark V2 Pro's. People who are into gaming and music can benefit from consumer headphones.
@I M They are both good in their own rights. Sound is very subjective. For example, when Techne talks about Beyerdynamic having 'screechy 'highs, I don't get that at all from them. You'll just have to weigh it up for yourself. Do you want wireless freedom or better for more than just gaming. Both sound great imo. Also you have to factor in an amp for the Beyers unless you get the 80 or 32 ohm version. Even the 80ohm likes an amp to an extent.
@@doctorgamingstein1557 arctis pro wired sounds sooo better than the wireless version , it's always been the case . Wireless connectivity does not have the bandwidth of a wired connection to transfer data , I will give you an example , even though technology of wireless headphones have grown so much still wired is only used by studio and audiophile users , the reason is because wired is always been better than wireless in terms of sheer audio quality , another eg: look at eSports community more than 80% of pro players uses wired👍 wireless is convenient yes but wired provides better sound quality 👍
Gaming headsets are just cheap and won't last maybe a few years. Beyerdynamic headphones last a lifetime. Some headphones are passed down from the older generation. Let's see if your dad hands you a gaming headset made by a company that mostly makes keyboards. I'll trust audio to the companies doing it for 50 years. Thanks.
@@its_just_dutch plus a Amp, maybe a dac, external mic and arm, audio interface, etc.. With a solid pair headphones and not some shp 9500.. Yeah u looking at 700+.. Just for gaming too? Lol no thanks. Unless you listen to music with them over speakers that's a different story but Id rather have and which I do, audiophile speakers with a gaming headset as I never use headphones for music when I have a pair of kefs in front of me.
Remember if you buy these different ear cushions, they will change how the headphone sounds. ALSO been using the Phillips SHP9500 for gaming for a while & cant moan about them tbf
i used to always use gaming headsets but in the past year ive switched to a pair of beyerdynamics dt990 pro and now i also have a pair of beyerdynamics dt900 pro x and i absolutely love them. You havent heard audio until youve heard it thru a quality headset.
You are now my favourite tech reviewer, the main reason being that you actually answer the question you pose at the beginning ie which is best. So sick of cop out reviews where they pose this question and you spend 20 minutes watching and finally get to the conclusion and they end up saying ‘it depends, if you like this get these ones but if you like this get the others’. You actually say which one you prefer and recommend which is truly appreciated. Excellent work dude please don’t ever stop making videos 👍🏻
I use open back headphones SHP9500 with the V-Moda boom pro, also use an amp to get best of them and never received any complain from teammates about them hearing what it comes from my headphones :)
@@marinomijares9 it works well because both the astro mixamp and the sph9500 are 32ohm. My plan is to use this combo for a few months and then upgrade to a better open back headphone and a better amp
I upgraded my sound when i bought my series x. My reasoning after watching your reviews was to go for the best possible sound considering my budget. Choose to go 3.5 instead of wireless and buy a quality pair of headphones/headset. Functions are cool and all, but soundquality was my priority. Got the ath-g1 wired and an blasterx g6 dac/amp for around 250 dollars (2500 swedish kr). Holy shit the sound is crazy good. Play a ton of battlefield, hitman, destiny, cs:go(pc) and other games and i love it. Also got dolby atmos. Personaly i dont need the functions of gaming headsets, dolby atmos gives me an eq, the g6 also lets me tune the sound. Wireless is nice, but soundquality is more important to me. Love your work
I didn't think the series x supported the G6 DAC?? Are you running the optical cable to your G6 from the optical input on your tv? How is Dolby Atmos working through the G6??
@@markcarrico5206 yeah I am running optical from my tv to the g6. Then powering the g6 with usb from the series x. I’ve also read that atmos does not work with optical, so even if I have the atmos app in my Xbox it isn’t real atmos, but instead changes it to regular 5.1 surround. But ether way is good, the sound alters depending on my atmos app eq and it is great. So I am still enjoying my g6. Especially now that I got a hold of better headphones that require an amp. Using fostex t50rp modded, holy F the sound is insane.
@@JonofBerglund so you are not using the audio Technica headphones anymore? I have that g6 DAC, but all my headsets are the gaming kind..I have been wanting to get a regular set of headphones to compare, but people have always told me that regular headphones won't sound good for gaming .
@@markcarrico5206 I watched zeos reviews on youtube and decided I wanted better headphones. If you check the audiophile guys they all say that regular headphones are better, gaming headsets are only regular headphones with some features or a mic added. Check his different fostex reviews, they are easy to mod with different earpads etc. The impedence is like 50, but they are power-hungry, not for mobile use. The g6 drives them good and I love them both for music and gaming. Started listening to music on tidal and it opened a new world of enjoying music. I really recommend getting the fostex t50rp, zmf lambskin earpads (or other earpads because the regular sucks) and a vmoda boom mic. To bad the mic on the g6 doesn’t work with Xbox, so when I chat in a party I can’t use the fostex because the controller won’t run them good enough. But I play a lot of bf1, destiny2 and csgo on pc and I can never go back to the ath1. Long answer, but getting better headphones have really made me appreciate music and sound in another way. The ath-g1 was good with the g6. But when I got my fostex and started to compared them, the ath-g1 sound weak and to focused on highs.
Regarding open back, it really depends what you're used to. I had never realised my basic gaming headphone I've had for over 5 years was an open back design. Recently I wanted something with a mic attached, and after looking at a million option I got a closed back. Man, it took me a looong time to get used to it, and I did not enjoy it one bit, now it's about ok, but I know I'll get rid of it eventually and go back to open back. That clostro feeling, not being able to hear when your partner asks you something, fishtank feeling. It's not ideal for myself at all, did not realise until then I preferred an open back.
same here, i switched from closed to openback and cannot stand to switch back yes sure i hear my pc and my bird screams but the feeling of being completely disconnected from the world is weird to me
I hate it when people use gaming headphones instead of audiophile or studio headphones . This heavily applies to anyone choosing gaming peripherals instead of office or professional peripherals . People nowadays hate professional quality and worship "gaming" and "competitive edge" fluff because they are corrupted by e-sports bulls .
I agree that studio headphones are better than gaming but gaming On an office mouse is just horrible and finding a non gaming proffesional mechanical keyboard below like 200$ is a miracle
Philips SHP9500 for $75 and a $35 Fifine desktop mic is all you need for an amazing gaming and music listening experience, if you don't mind open back (which isn't really that annoying unless you're not blasting your ears off).
That's why I still recommend the Phillips SHP9500 or SHP9600 with a V-Moda Boompro microphone. That's a relatively cheap open back headphone and great microphone for barely over $100. Easily beats just about every gaming headset at the price point
Me to . don"t see it that way . Think my ath m5o x are superior in every way people talk about their soundstage but using dts my m50x has pen point accuracy . shp 9500 seem like corsair hs 60 with no mic to me .yes have a pair of them laying around also shows the difference in people . Wanted to believe but I own them both . and yes both on same amp. but then again they are a little more .Recommend buying dts sound and trying it on the headset you got if on pc with out using manufacturer software before you purchase new .shp9500 use beyer dynamic 990 pro eq will make a big diff amp or not m50x use m50x limited eq for gaming .
@@fliptout86 About DTS . go to microsoft store download DTS sound . when you open it click on configure headphones when it open click on the 3 dots to open to select your headphones instead of selecting philips select beyer dt990 pro . try it you can download for free for a 2 week try it is only a few bucks .

Been using beyerdynamic custom one pros and the dt770 pro 80 ohms for a couple years and i love them. Before that i used a bunch of high end gaming headsets and a couple other headphones and imo the beyerdynamic are just much higher quality
I finally gave in and got a set of the wireless Pros the other day. Can't wait for them to come in. I'lll definitely be looking into wicked cushions too.
oh sweet man! your going to love them, and no joke these new wicked cushions are amazing! I never thought anything would be better than steelseries ear cushions, these did it!
@@K----- steelseries ones? I have the wireless pro and had to return them because of its clamping force it gave me close to a migraine. Couldn't have them on for more than 30min. Sucks.
I used to sub to you years ago when you only had a couple of hundred. I stopped subbing because my interest was mostly photography then. Now I’m back into my gaming, you just came up and I want to say I’m so pleased to see your grind has paid off
hey techne, love the take on the video, it's very honest. With regards to the Auido interafces or amps, I think you can buy a 50-80 dollar audio interface and connect your headphones to the computer that way. I know, it's 80 extra dollars but it gives you the phantom power needed to make it sound even more beautiful like you said on the video. I think it's not too bad as long as you don't mind spending about 1 hour following some youtube guides LOL. I have my m50x connected to a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 for music and gaming. It's great. On the other hand, a gaming headset is very convenient because it is plug-and-play like you said. that's probably its biggest appeal to me, to be honest.
I dont see why you couldnt just plug and play with an headphone and a dac/amp thats exactly what i did with my motu 2 hd560s, no need to install some eq software to make some wizardry (which i did ofc after), just plug.. and play
THANKYOU TECHNE!!! i have been looking for these kinds of vids for so long, and i've been a fan of yours ever since i get into your videos and all of a sudden this pops out on my birthday and i couldn't thank you more for answering my questions!!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
@@NotGoodAtUA-cam So are open back headphones best for gaming as their soundstage is wide and directional audio is better ? i do have some ATH- IM50 monitor earphones but it just lacks the directional sounds when playing games..so ended up buying a gaming headset...but that didnt last. So what pair of headphones can i get that can give me good audio for music as well as good directional sounds when playing games other than SHP9500
@@HatsuneMiku-fw7ee yes, open backs are much better for gaming but note that people in the same room might be able to hear what you’re listening to. SHP9500’s sound great for music in my opinion. If you’re not that competitive and like bass the shp9600’s have more bass but that does also mean footsteps/gunshots as well.
gaming headsets are more convenient and are, (more often than not) packed with features, whereas headphones will often give you better overall AUDIO QUALITY. Both have their merits.
I guess you know you're swimming in dangerous waters with a video like this... But as a beginner audiophile myself, I agree 100% with you. I just went from a pair of HD58X and HE4XX to just and Audeze Penrose X (I hate wires everywhere!) and it's the best decision I've made since I started to like good headphones. The convenience and ease of use just kills everything else. Oh, and the Penrose sounds AMAZING.
Having a weight around your head is already a nuisance , adding more wires makes everything almost intolerable after a long hours of use. That's why I go for IEM these days as they can still provide no latency while giving high quality audio. Only downside is the wire but at least not as long as Headphones.
Perfect! I woke up sayin i need a new headset. This go around i wanna be more thoughtful in my pick. This was awesome since i deal with gaming and video/audio mixing too.
Huge respect for speaking your honest opinion and not giving in to peer pressure and r/headphones. As an audiophile, I also ended up preferring gaming headsets.
What do you recommend for me? I have a goxlr and a shure sm7b mic! I'm trying to decide which headphones to get I also monitor music and voice-overs for my UA-cam channel but I want to game and hear footsteps very well. Currently using my friends $600 senheiser headphones and I hate them because they are open back. I was thinking about the audio technica m40 or 50. But want to hear your recommendations. Plz help!
@I M I only play Warzone and the dt990 250 ohm literally feel like cheating. I can literally hear everything and pinpoint where they come from. This is my honest experience, not trying to sell you something.
Gotta own multiple headphones and gaming headsets. I love SteelSeries! I own the Arctis Pro + GameDAC-(Desktop) Arctis Pro Wireless-(laptop) Arctis Pro Wireless-(PS4/PS5). On the go it's the Sony WF-1000XM4: When I want to listen to music it's the HIFIMAN Sundara+Schiit Hel. I'm a headphone lover. I appreciate good sound so I need something for every listening situation.
I disagree with a lot of the stuff he says here when I got the dt990 (the only reason I got them was that the Hd 600 were too expensive) they were the best thing since sliced bread. Yea the high end is higher than usual but it is well represented and does not get rid of the base (very balanced). and open backs were a way better experience because of the sound stage, you can hear things that you would never hear with gaming headsets in games and music. but one of the best things bout it is the fit, studio headphones are built to be worn for hours at a time and built to breathe and be lightweight and they do it right lots of them just float on top of your head with little listening fatigue
Just to add, that proper studio headphones usually tend to give a flat response in frequency so you get true sound when mixing and mastering music, so would be pointless in gaming setups. Gaming headsets and cheaper studio headphones are more Hi Fidelity giving a more richer / colour to the different frequency ranges
yes! my beyerdynamic dt 1990 pro are amazing when im making music or listening to music, but are not great when I play apex legends because of the flat frequency response. I went back to my hyper x headset and I can hear people below and above me when i couldnt even pinpoint where people are coming from on my studio headset.
Great video man. Love your take on tech stuff, very informative and honest. I recently purchased an audio technica m40x headphones with a schiit hel gaming dac/amp and my gaming audio experience has been phenomenal. Keep rockin on with these great review tech videos my guy.

I just got the Arctis 7p wireless for the ps5 and I'm absolutely in love with them, I was hesitant at first as I previously owned the arctis 3 and found them uncomfortable but I highly recommend the new 7p and 7x headset, super stinking cozy!
I also curently have artics 3 and also after 6 years of use, they did get little sus, I will buy the 7 if you are soo fascinated with them and would recommend :)
Honestly, open backs vary A LOT when it comes to bleed. I have the Phillips Fidelio X2HR (I think it's like $120 on Amazon now) and I can listen to loud music in the same room as my parents.
I’ve been gaming with my Bowers & Wilkins P7. I got them back in 2014 just to use as a regular pair of headphones for music. Ended up really liking them for games, music, and more recently movies. I have them plugged into a JDS Atom stack and it’s been great. If I upgrade my headphones, I’d probably get the DT 1990. I’m not really into gaming headsets. I don’t really need any gaming features. Just headphones that focus on build and sound quality. For a mic, I use the Quadcast S. I absolutely love that thing
Man I'm glad I found this, I've been looking around at a bunch of headsets on both sides. I'm three months deep and haven't come to a conclusion. I'm currently replacing my corsair virtuosos
I recently bought the Wireless Arctics pro which is fantastic except having to change batteries pretty often although that's a small price. I also bought the open back Sennheiser 560s and the difference in clarity in FPS was on another level still. I will continue to use them both but when I want to just game and try my best, I will choose the 560s first. The openback headphones is also nice in my situation since I have a office room so its quiet most of the time but when my family want me I hear them immediately. The features on the Arctics with bluetooth and wireless makes sure I use those aswell for allround use. Have a nice day!
@@zacdavis7 I am using the DAC that comes with the arctics pros wireless, still do and still working great. To clarify I plug the 560s into the unit that comes with the SteelSeries headset.
This video is something I’ve really wondered about for a while. I’ve already bought the Xbox wireless headset and can say I love it; again thanks to your review. I’m seriously interested in getting the ear cushions that were sponsored; though I’m hesitant because I just saw the supported headphones but the Xbox wireless headset isn’t on the list.
Do they distort when you play a super heavy bass song? I got pair based of Techne review and had to return them because they clipped really bad with heavy bass.
@@oldandslow8994 Even on flat EQ? You could’ve gotten a faulty headset(but maybe not). I know the pro wireless had issues like that since the drivers aren’t as good as the pro wired but that’s to be expected in wireless. My wired Arctis haven’t had any issues with distortion in heavy bass. Due note that bass frequency doesn’t distort audio but volume does.
Just ordered the Arctis Pro Wireless and am excited to integrate them into my desk setup where I game, produce music, and edit video. The wireless functionality was a must for the multi-purpose needs - and with the multi input setup I’m able to switch between studio monitors/wired headphones and the Arctis with the press of a button.
For me it is SO HORRIBLE it breaks so easily when mine broke i got hyperx cloud stinger its much better and cheaper but that also broke today so im looking for headphones
Beyerdynamic dt990s without any doubt. not becouse of ninja. but becouse of how GOOD they became when the earpads god worn in. the high pitch goes away alot
Studio headphones 100% I feel like gaming headphones are made to break. I used to get gaming headsets when I was younger but found out about audio technica and bought a pair of their ATH M20x headphones. Been using them for 5 years strong. Never going back to gaming headsets.

This video came out at the perfect time, been contemplating whether I should get a good pair of audio headphones and a dedicated microphone or a headset
Hello, I noticed this video is 3 years old, and so are most of the comments here. Yet I am looking for a pair of headset/headphones for my PS3 Slim. What I want is great sound, great base, trembling is welcomed as well, and closed back. Surround sound is a big plus, as long as it truly works and won't make the sound worse. Preferably wireless, but if they will have a long cable up to 5m, I can go with wired too. Mic isn't important for me as I don't play online anyway, I just wanna immerse myself in the game itself. My budget is around 200 CAD. Thank you, if this comment gets noticed and some useful and helpful responses will be received.
Headphones also come in wireless. I don't know how you missed this blatant fact. Also, the best headphones are more expensive than the best headset, so it's inaccurate to say headphones are cheaper. Words like "warmth" or "fun" are vague and unsuitable to quality sound in a product. I want a product which has a higher quality, more accurate sound; not "warmth" or "fun" as these latter don't really mean anything in terms of positioning a product quality-wise. Finally, open-back design offers the greatest sound quality in headphones/headsets, and this is why the best, most expensive headphones in the world are open-back. closed-casket headphones muffle the sound, resulting in quality/fidelity/accuracy loss. Of course that, if you have a problem with surrounding noise, you have no choice but to go with closed-casket but open-casket is the best quality option and is also a preference for people like me, who don't game in a noisy environment and, who, as such, don't need noise-blocking features and who, also, want don't want to stop listening to what is around them while wearing headphones. Finally and, most importantly, if what you value the most is sound quality, then the clear winner is headphones since the best headset doesn't come near the best headphones in sound quality. At least to me, sound quality is the most important factor.
Ok people let tell what ohm really are. First when it come to basic electric circuits you have amps(current) , voltage and ohm. Ohm is the resistance to the current that means that you need to have over 250amps to get the headset working. This is great for audio for reason that i dont know enough put now you have a basic understanding of the ohms. Voltage is pure power
Even the dongles still have delays unfortunately, many people might not notice. But lip sync is the easiest to see, its off by a little unless you are wired in.
I swear by my open-backed Sennheiser Game One for gaming but I understand that not everyone plays in an environment that works well for open cans. Not only do they provide a wide sound stage but they're extremely breathable. I can wear them for hours and my ears barely warm up at all. The microphone is also top notch (for a headset). I have some closed headsets I like a lot too though. The HyperX Cloud Alpha is a great wired headset and the RIG 800HD is still my favorite wireless headset because it's insanely lightweight and has a very balanced sound. It's just hard to recommend because it's not really sold anywhere anymore.
How bad is open back when having a fan running? Is it too annoying to concentrate on the game? Planning on buying the DT 900 Pro X soon and that's open back but I usually got the fan running or air conditioner in the background during hot days. Suppose I can always switch back to my HyperX Cloud Alpha if it's too annoying!!
let’s just said i used a hd700 for gaming before. it beats every single high end gaming headphones from razer logitech steal series etc i bought before considering it extremely wide feel of space and accuracy of directions. i switch to other sennheiser gaming headphones that used hd 600 series driver since it have similar accuracy as hd700 and it have a mic. also it is a lot easier to drive and i can use a gaming dac to drive the gaming headphones. in my opinion, gaming headphones has a long way to go before it even come close to decent headphones
Ive had some from both categories and some gaming headsets are tuned way better for game audio. For example the dt770s are good but have basically really recessed mids (upper vocal range). And the m50xs are good for music but have literally 0 soundstage and really boomy mid kick bass. The hyperx hadsets offee great value for a cheap price and pretty good audio tuning for games and music. Some have too much of that mid bass tho.
I haven't tried any audiophile headphones yet but they say dt770s are not that great. They say hd560s, Sundara, and hd600 are some of the best entry point in the hobby. They can be quite expensive though.
@@alrizo1115 DT 770s are honestly not that bad for gaming. The DT 880 and even DT 990 are probably a bit better for gaming as far as Beyerdynamics and close to the same price. But as Beyerdyanmics, the DT 900 pro x is the best for gaming and are only 32 ohms so less amp dependent. As for Senhiser, HD 560 is a solid one for gaming but some love the HD 600 or 650. Just keep in mind that with many of these you need to have an amp that can power them in order to get the full benefit out of them. Even the DT 900s do much better with an amp despite only being 32 ohms. Gaming headsets meanwhile will have a built-in amp or software to compensate but typically do not sound nearly as good and are very bass-heavy. However, many audiophile headphones can be too neutral for gaming such as the HD 600 so Its a give and take when it comes to headphones v headsets. Though personally I feel headphones are more enjoyable, there is an argument for headsets for gaming in terms of budget and convenience. Honestly, hyperx cloud is good option as it is surprisingly well balanced for a gaming headsets and really good battery.
Great video Techne. One thing I'd like mention is bluetooth headphones with the Aptx low latency codec work very well. I sometimes use a pair of Sennheiser Momentum 3 wireless bluetooth headphones and they sound phenomenal with zero audio latency..... My ONLY issue is they aren't stinkin cozy so I have to take them off after about 30 minutes or so!
I am looking to buy a headset for gaming and I was convinced to buy cloud Alpha around 70 euros, but now that I saw your video and some reviews Audio Technica ATH-M50x seems a good upgrade. My current headset is Razer kraken x lite and I dont know what to pick next :)
I feel like gaming headsets are just a gimmick with a bunch of fancy words and claims but audiophile headphones are guilty of that as well. Gaming headsets can be good if done right. I have no issues with my Cooler Master MH751s. (Which are rebranded studio headphones called Takstars) Audiophile headphones I feel can’t really do much wrong but you loose a lot of the features and peace of mind gaming headsets offer. Plus it gets A LOT more expensive with gear needed to run them. It also depends on what the consumer desires in a headphone. I rock a Sennheiser 6XX hooked to a Fiio K5 Pro DAC/AMP and blue snowball on an arm. All of it is around $450which is way more than a gaming headset.

I like to use my Sennheiser HD599s when I just want to play single player and not talk to anyone. I love the open sound and whilst they aren't popular with "audiophiles" for not having a flat sound signature, they suit me perfectly as I like more of a fun sound experience. The first time I played Red Dead Redemption 2 with these I was so impressed. I do also have the HyperX Alphas for when I'm talking to friends online at the same time and also if there's a lot of noise such as if I have a desk fan running
open back vs closed back is definitely personal preference. for me, having open back is really nice. much more breathable and comfortable not having pressure in your ears. I don't have a noise house, and my computer is really quiet. I like being able to hear if my dog is getting into something etc. I also have a very hard time talking in a mic in closed back, I've never been able to string words together if I can't hear my self. I have the Phillips SPH9500 for $80 CAD, and powered by a FX-audio DAC-X6 for $65 USD, and a modmic for $60 CAD. Really great budget set up.
Great video, thank you. I have a question. Will a gaming headset (wired) sound better with a good external soundcard and/or amplifier? Or if I buy those it'll be better to consider headphones with some mic solution. I'm mostly playing games with my buds and watching some movies. Would really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Difference between gaming headset and headphone companies
1)
•) gaming headset companies try to improve ther features, looks and software
•) headphone companies on the other hand try to improve there sound quality and comfort only
2)
•) gaming headset companies on there website usually advertise the features , battery life , comfort and other useful gimmicks like virtual "7.1"
•) headphone companies on their website usually advertise there specially tuned drivers there sound quality there comfort and materials used

So choose wisely, or get both.
i been thinking about Audio Technica and Beyerdynamic for 2 years now
2 year later, what did you get?
I have been waiting for someone to make a video about this
Wired always sounds better than wireless
Even though the wireless one is much more expensive?
No longer the case though :/
@@doctorgamingstein1557 arctis pro wired sounds sooo better than the wireless version , it's always been the case . Wireless connectivity does not have the bandwidth of a wired connection to transfer data , I will give you an example , even though technology of wireless headphones have grown so much still wired is only used by studio and audiophile users , the reason is because wired is always been better than wireless in terms of sheer audio quality , another eg: look at eSports community more than 80% of pro players uses wired👍 wireless is convenient yes but wired provides better sound quality 👍
@@rtarigan3886 they are more expensive because they are wireless

The TYGR ones are bussin
@Airmanareiks hd600 for gaming are a no-go
@Airmanareiks are you running them on a tube? Neutral isn't the best sound signature for gaming. Also they aren't that wide
Thanks.

@@marinomijares9 it works well because both the astro mixamp and the sph9500 are 32ohm. My plan is to use this combo for a few months and then upgrade to a better open back headphone and a better amp
U seem to know your stuff, by any chance do you know which is the best frequency response and impedance that you can get on console?
@@JonofBerglund also, what is the impedence on the Fostex set?
I hate how overblown these prices get when they have the word "gaming" on them
Regarding open back, it really depends what you're used to.
This heavily applies to anyone choosing gaming peripherals instead of office or professional peripherals . hey techne, love the take on the video, it's very honest. gaming headsets are more convenient and are, (more often than not) packed with features, whereas headphones will often give you better overall AUDIO QUALITY. Both have their merits.
But which feature do you really use? Mostly I found those useless.

I'm not going back to gaming headsets anytime soon.
Open back studio headphones sound so much better overall.but that's just my preference.
wire = nah
watched your other videos on gaming headphones and ended up getting the arctis pro wireless ur points helped alot
Did you use a dac with your 560s or just plug into pc?
@@zacdavis7 I am using the DAC that comes with the arctics pros wireless, still do and still working great. To clarify I plug the 560s into the unit that comes with the SteelSeries headset.
@@TWLpontus so it’s a huge difference in footsteps and such?
I like open backs because they are more immersive. I can everything around me a lot better than closed backs.
I use both. I use Bose NC 700 for music but for gaming. I use the Artics Pro. Best of both worlds.
I have Arctis Pro and I felt love to them.. They are just awesome! Super sound, comfort..
Do they distort when you play a super heavy bass song? I got pair based of Techne review and had to return them because they clipped really bad with heavy bass.
@@oldandslow8994 they do not distort what so ever, plus they have the DAC so you can mess with the settings to your liking.
@@dominickc5677 My pair of Arctis Pros distorted really bad even with a flat EQ setting when ever I played any thing with heavy Bass.
Audeze penrose is going to sound better than half of those “headphones” on that table
@@wontangonatoogie dawg take care of your stuff better💀
@@juliotinajero2315 i do, the cloud stinger’s jack just randomly stopped working
You can get DT 770 PRO in 32/80 ohm versions under 200, and they don't requere an amp. Btw, KOSS UR 40 and some Razer mic
Not when you buy a good and very damn durable pair like Astro A40s and a50s
@@michaelbrahh3270 yeah, but the sound quality isn’t at the same level

Great video The Techne. I've been itching to get another gaming headset.
Dude i love this video. Thank u. The way u explain the conclusion truly make sence and very informative. I was looking around UA-cam to find a straight forward answer and I couldn’t find a single one except for ur video right here. But u also did a great job on picking a choice without diss ing the other side. Again thank u for giving a straight answer with detailed reason to back it up
Akg 712 pro + SB g6. Nice! And i also listen music so thats why i use this combo
about to order a new headset, definitely getting smoe of those wicked cushions
this was insanely helpful i started with the hyperx cloud 2 as my first headset since switching to pc a couple months ago and then i really started to wonder if it would be better to get a pair of headphones instead and this really helped alot i have since switched to the logitech g pro x due to your review of them until i can save for a good pair of headphones and an amp and michrophone i personally just dont like have the attached mics always right by my mouth to me it just gets in the way and is inconvinient i would much rather have a dedicated mic on a boom thank you for the great videos your awesome and i will def look into the wicked cushions
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! THIS 20 MINUTE VIDEO EXPLAINED WHAT I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING FOR MONTHS! TECHNE IF YOU SEE THIS, IS BUYING HEADSETS OFF EBAY SAFE? ❤
This video came out at the perfect time, been contemplating whether I should get a good pair of audio headphones and a dedicated microphone or a headset
What was your choice?
Hello,
I noticed this video is 3 years old, and so are most of the comments here.
Open backs feel the best because you can talk without your own voice being drowned out
That's a big issue but the cloud 2 wireless got mic monitoring which works pretty good.
Does the sound leaks get pick up by your external mic?
@@vinny5015 for me open backs doent leak as much as people say they do so it doesn’t get picked up
@@whitegoodman7465 does it use software or does it just have that playback feeling?
@@alexyang3735 what external mic do you use or does your headphone has a built-in microphone?
At least to me, sound quality is the most important factor.
definetly getting those wicked cushions, thats so cool
Ok people let tell what ohm really are. First when it come to basic electric circuits you have amps(current) , voltage and ohm. Ohm is the resistance to the current that means that you need to have over 250amps to get the headset working. This is great for audio for reason that i dont know enough put now you have a basic understanding of the ohms. Voltage is pure power
You should review more amps and Dac’s! Keep up the good content!
Even the dongles still have delays unfortunately, many people might not notice. But lip sync is the easiest to see, its off by a little unless you are wired in.
Got rid of my Razer Nari wireless headset after I tried the pc37x, best headset for the $$$
I think the PC38x is gonna be my next gaming headset purchase, I hear so many good things about the pc37x and PC38x
Suppose I can always switch back to my HyperX Cloud Alpha if it's too annoying!!
i use my Audeze Penrose wireless and my Fidelio x2hr wired when i want to switch it up both of them sound better than steel series headsets by far
Which one sounds better : Penrose wireless or Fidelio wired ? Thank you
@@MisterBeRight I like them both but if i had to choose only 1 it would be the penrose i like using the the Bluetooth too much
let’s just said i used a hd700 for gaming before. it beats every single high end gaming headphones from razer logitech steal series etc i bought before considering it extremely wide feel of space and accuracy of directions. i switch to other sennheiser gaming headphones that used hd 600 series driver since it have similar accuracy as hd700 and it have a mic. also it is a lot easier to drive and i can use a gaming dac to drive the gaming headphones. in my opinion, gaming headphones has a long way to go before it even come close to decent headphones
Me, who laughs while using pc37x, a mix of studio headphones and gaming headset.
Wait, that's a thing?
Yea check them out on Amazon
Thanks! I will
And if ur budgets a little higher and you don’t mind yellow consider pc38x (pc37x v2)
@@burp7057 it's more towards the lower end lol. I actually saw them right next to the 37x on Amazon and shed a tear due to my budget
i simply trust this guy
Really useful video
I really loved the Conclusion, thank you very much❤
Great video Techne.
Thank you so much. Gonna get a game headset with amp. Awesome video!
I like these kind of videos
I am looking to buy a headset for gaming and I was convinced to buy cloud Alpha around 70 euros, but now that I saw your video and some reviews Audio Technica ATH-M50x seems a good upgrade. My current headset is Razer kraken x lite and I dont know what to pick next :)
I was legit thinking bout this 🤣
I feel like gaming headsets are just a gimmick with a bunch of fancy words and claims but audiophile headphones are guilty of that as well.
Gaming headsets can be good if done right. I have no issues with my Cooler Master MH751s. (Which are rebranded studio headphones called Takstars)
Audiophile headphones I feel can’t really do much wrong but you loose a lot of the features and peace of mind gaming headsets offer.
Sound is king features isn't
this guy is from the 90s and i love it
Pls try beyerdynamic MMX 300 gen2 it's a gaming headset and it's a closed back soooo plssss try em u will love em basically it's gaming headset made by a audiophile company , negative reviews=0 try them u will love them better than ur steelseries if u didn't like them just return them back to Amazon amazing pair 👍 really appreciate ur work❤️👍
are the highs as piercing as the 770's/990's?
@@TheTechne The sounds are about the same as the 770s. 990s will have more sibilance (;-;) and will have more piercing highs. It should be about on par with a dt770 32ohm, albeit with an attached microphone. So it will have those piercing highs here and there.
@@TheTechne I've heard that they're not as piercing as those other Beyers.
@@TheTechne no the highs are cut down it's not unusable like that of dt990 and dt770 it's one of the most widest sounding closed back and it's having lazer sharp imaging so it's good for gaming it's a V shaped headphone , the high are not that piercing still the highs are present if u r planning to try em then pls buy dekoni choice leather pads(40) along with the headset it will make them sound even better it will get around 300$ when u add those pads, those pads r imp, it's a direct competition to steelseries arctis pro wired for couple more bucks so pls try these I am suggesting u this headset because it's a closed back pair , it's one of the best closed back around that price for gaming and even for music and movies , they r really immersive ,they r easy to drive 32ohms no need of an amp still great with a solid state amp to get more of that umph , it's a nice package , really comfortable (stinkin cozy) it's not feature rich like the arctis pro but still it does what it's meant to do better than any other headset , it's simple ,premium looking, good enough build , excellent audio for every use case , no RGB , dekoni pads = must , if u didn't like em just return it , the highs r not as sharp as the dt series of headphones , class leading mic . After everything u said about ur preferences this is the only pair that came to my mind so pls try them (if u hate them then replace it ) one of my favourite "closed back" headphone/headset for gaming and music 👍 keep making such awesome content , all the best 👍
@@TheTechne it's better than dt770 for sure , I couldn't use em👍 these r different not as sharp as dt990 and dt770 . s

I love the sound of the mic its clear and not muffled and the headset is extremly clear for music and and gaming. I stopped using gaming headsets 3 yrs ago . Sold all my Sennheisers on eBay lol oh im getting a set of ur Stinking cushions too !!!
How do the Sennheiser compare to the hyperx alphas? Are they significantly better or just slightly better?
open back vs closed back is definitely personal preference.
for me, having open back is really nice. much more breathable and comfortable not having pressure in your ears.
I am really curious what your 2022 choices look like.
Thank you!
