Ian McDonald was the most impressive rock musician I’d ever heard in concert. I had a view of Ian from a balcony seat overlooking him in the first Foreigner tour. He would put down a sax and pick up a flute and then play a guitar and then play keyboards. It was one instrument after the other all played equally brilliantly. I’ll never forget his musicianship. Lou Gramm and Ed Gagliardi and Mick Jones and Dennis Elliot and Al Greenwood of Foreigner were all tremendous to see in concert. Mick Jones sang lead on “Starrider” and I liked that song. Foreigner’s first album is without a doubt a legendary release and I appreciate your clueing us in on the new version of this recording. The record was fresh and gave a new take on rock with Lou’s vocals, Mick’s guitar and Ian’s multi instrumentalism as well as Dennis and Al’s musical skills.
Completely agree. I was able to see them back in the 70's and they were amazing. I am actually going to see them next year as part of there farewell tour at the Venetian in Vegas. Mick is the only original member but I hope it will still be good. Thank you for your insight!
You can't go wrong with SACD's. I have been purchasing a few of the Atlantic 75 albums on SACD since I didn't want to spend the $60 for the vinyl. So far, the SACD's I have got sound outstanding! Thank you.
I was blown away by the new AP pressing. I agree Star rider is incredible. I bough the original back in 77 so this album has always been special to me. Other standouts for me on this pressing. The vocals on Fool for you anyway and Woman oh Woman.
Mike, are you gonna get the whole set of Analog Productions Atlantic 75 series? That is 75 records at 60 bucks a pop. I have 4 of them so far and all sound fantastic.
No! I am only purchasing the ones that I really like, such as the Phil Collins, Foreigner, Dr.John, some of the Genesis, all the bad company, all the CSN&Y, Yes and others. But not all. Can't afford all of them. Thanks Piz Zaz.
That group, and that album in particular has tremendous nostalgia for me since I was 14 years old, I was living apart from my family in Maine, and I spent an inordinate amount of time playing pinball in a pizza shop within walking distance of my foster family! In that time I was also getting into Girls! So when I hear those songs, I’m transported! I’m so glad that Chad did this series and I can’t wait to pick up mine! Of course I have OG’s of all of them up until agent provocateur! Lou Graham‘s voice was incredible, and could never be duplicated! To me, they’re just a cover band now! Just like journey without Steve Perry! Speaking of that would be great for analog productions to do those Journey albums too! I’m sure it would be a huge hit! Great episode Mike!
Oh man I completely agree, great music for the time and your correct that they really are just a cover band as well as journey. Saw both groups in the 70’s and 80’s and they were amazing. Took my kids to see Journey and it just simply is not the same without Steve Perry. That voice is not possible to duplicate. Thank you for sharing, what a great story!
@@Nicholas-m8n that is interesting! Hopefully they find a way to get some of those amazing Journey performances and audiophile treatment! I’m certain there would be a great deal of interest!
Hi Mike. Just found your channel and love it. Thank you. Quick question, on the 77 pressing of Foreigner, what do you mean by the top end being “edgy”? How do you describe that. I have the original not sure I want to spend the money on the new copy. Thank you Ed
After looking at the album, Nick is correct and that must be the reason for the edginess. It just sounds bright on my system and to my ears. I really enjoyed this album as so many memories especially when I was in high school I really had to have it but to be honest with you and that’s kind of why I eluded that a lot of the Atlantic 75 titles are coming out. I’m definitely going to be picking and choosing the ones that I purchase $60 each for an album is really steep. A great example is the genesis title. The lamb lies down on Broadway $120 for a double album. I have an original copy that I think sounds really good I will not be purchasing that Atlantic 75. Thank you so much for your comment.
Interesting enough I was not that much into Foreigner back then. Today I enjoy their music much more - guess a kind of nostalgia due to the radio listening experience. Regarding the Atlantic 75th series so far I only own the Mingus Blues & Roots which is phenomenal as well. Could be tempted to buy the Phil Collins and Genesis releases - those were always huge for me. Cheers, Boris
The first Phil Collins release is really good as well as the Dr. John. I am definitely picking and choosing the albums that I purchase out of this collection $60 is an awful lot to pay for an album. Thank you my friend.
This was the first album I ever bought when I was as a kid. And I still have it! So I will be getting the AP version soon. Agree Starrider is one of the best; The Damage is Done is my fave on the album
Hey Mike! I am very new to your channel. My cousin had the original Canadian version and I got the "cassette" version when I was a young lad. LOVE the album. You're so right. They knocked it out of the park. As a Canadian?? It truly sucks cost wise but I got Selling England By The Pound by Genesis and Phil Collins' Face Value but now?? I must grab Foreigner's S/T and as much as I hate paying for this?? I LOVE this album and will grab it. Great review my friend. Thanks for inspiring me to purchase the 2LP 45rp. Blessings Big D
Thank you Darrin. I have been purchasing the Genisis Atlantic albums on SACD and they sound wonderful. I'm sure not as good as the vinyl but I can't afford all the AP/Atlantic 75 albums on vinyl. Thank you Again.
i have this foreigner album crystal clear precious vinyl and the sound is fantastic chucky winnipeg manitoba canada
Great review, Mike, but what do you think about "Starrider?" :)
Love Starrider! one of the best songs they did! Excited for more of the Foreigner catalog to be released with this treatment. Thank you.

I am tired of vinyl, so the SACD version for me.

Agreed, the entire album is excellent and being their first! Thanks for sharing.

I'm looking forward to the AP's first few Bad Company and early Ray Charles releases.
I am defiantly after the bad company albums and yes some Ray Charles. Thank you for comment!
Can't wait to get the sacd hybrid
