Thankfully a benefit concert was organised for him and he was looked after in a nursing home down in Surrey for his last six months.
What a fantastic lady his wife was, standing firmly by his side through such difficult times.True Love Indeed.
Such a cruel disease that takes everything you were away from you and those that love you.
He was well loved all over the world, particularly in the UK and the States. His body of work still remains though and reminds us why he brought so many smiles to so many peoples faces. God Bless You Terry !

Following this heartbreaking interview, a benefit concert was organised by Jack Douglas and Richard Hope-Hawkins for Terry-Thomas. Chaired by Michael Caine and with a bill topped by Phil Collins, over £75,000 was raised (almost a quarter of a million in today's money). This allowed Terry-Thomas to move out of the charity flat into a nursing home, where he died a year later. RIP, you legend.

A lot o his peers helped. The video mentions the financial help of Bob Monkhouse. Also Jack Douglas organised a benefit concert which a number of his showbiz peers were involved in, which raised sufficient funds to pay for a nursing home which, in turn, enabled him to move out of his charity accommodation. I believe that the Grand Order Of The Water Rats, a charitable organisation formed fro members of the entertainment industry, also assisted.
He hid his condition as far as he could as he didn’t want to jeopardise his chances of being offered roles. It wasn’t until a lot nearer the end that many people that he had known even realised how bad things were.
It’s fair to say that his finances were drained to poverty by his medical bills, and he was in a very sad state towards the end. But to say that his peers let him down badly isn’t entirely fair.

This should be a good example of how a spouse should respect and each other during their hay days because whenever sickness comes knocking at your door money and the glamorous lifestyle doesn't matter anymore but the love for each other is all you've got.
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018 and I sat and watched him slowly diminishing right before my eyes but am extremely happy that he died a happy man.
I took such good care of him to the very end. Sadly he passed away 3 months ago. May his soul rest in peace. Beauty and looks do fade away but genuine love never fails.

That’s why I’m squirrelling away my meds in a boxed bottle of cognac. Can’t bear the thought of putting my family through the stress of caring for me or the stress of choosing a home and living with the guilt of it for the rest of their lives.

Wow, an icon of cinematic comedy, sadly characters like Terry Thomas will never be seen again, look at his reward for entertaining millions over the decades. He should be living in luxury in his old age. Fortunately he still has kind friends to look out for him, but what struck me most was the way he looked so miserable and seemed like he wasn't aware of anything or anyone in the room.
Wonder when this video was made, if he is still alive it will be an honour to chip in a few quid. I grew up on his films and my great aunt worked with him over the years at the Ealing and Elstree studio's of 50's and 60's.

One must consider that he and his wife may have lived the high life, in the moment, with no thought for the future. A bit like Jean de la Fontaine's fable about the grasshopper and the ant: the fable concerns a grasshopper who spends the warm months singing away while the ant works to store up food for winter. But that we don't know for sure, bad investments leading to bankruptcy then illness. He and his wife have two sons who didn't seem able either willingly or unwillingly to help mum and dad out.

To those who wonder where all the money went, he had Parkinson’s for twenty years much of which is was not able to work. All of his properties were sold and his savings used up. In Britain at the time if you had over a certain amount of money then you were not able to claim any support until that money was used up which is what happened in this case. It must be remembered as well that actors though still well paid back then were no where near as well paid as they are now plus back then taxes for most of his big earning period were extremely high for high earners!
Having nursed my mum through eight years of illness to her passing in 1994 I used all my savings up and I was not rich, I will never regret one penny of it going though as I had the company of her right up to the end. It’s his wife I feel saddest for as after he died she should have at least had the comfort of a comfortable income to fall back upon but sadly not.

40,000 GBP per year for "medical services"? Parkinson's disease is not that expensive to treat, and home care would not even approach that amount. Seems like poor financial planning. A valuable lesson, like the story/parable about the ant and the grasshopper.

In Canada care homes are free. I suspect in the UK they are too. This video is misleading. They both will have some kind of income from the govt, albeit a small one. That's 2 pensions in a 1 bedroom apartment or flat. They are better off than I am.
Council flats are available at low rents for people on govt pensions, ESPECIALLY when they are ill. And if he qualifies for any kind of care home at all, he would already be qualified for a govt run one. The only difference is comfort level and cost. Fancy private ones have better food etc. Something is fishy. I think somebody thought he deserves a fancy private care home. Well, don't we all?
I never had the luxury of blowing hundreds of thousands, maybe millions in today's currency, on the high life. I have MS and it's not my own fault, as it is theirs, that I'm in poverty. Yet no celebrities are begging others to give me cash so I go to luxurious private care home! This is so fishy!
I would applaud Micheal Caine etc if they campaigned to send some GENUINE poor people to a luxury home, but not him.
When a CARE HOME, which is a medical necessity, is required by anyone in the entire western world (except the US of course, where they are in the dark ages), they are admitted.
How it is paid for is a complicated thing that varies from country to country, but it ends up being that the cost is deducted from the pay or govt pension of that person. No person is ever denied their basic human right to medical care (outside of the US.) Not old people, and not people with Parkinson's.
This whole thing is deceptive, and being so rich Micheal Caine likely didn't understand how it works for normal people. He was very likely deceived by people who "bent" words like "care home." There are many different terms that are used when discussing that topic. In Canada we call then nursing homes. Everyone is entitled to a nursing home if they are unable to care for themself, even if their spouse or children are bursting with health and vigor. And the minimal cost of it cost comes out of their old age pension. If their pension some how does not cover it, the govt swallows the cost. Their healthy spouse is not penalized. I cannot imagine that it's any different in the UK.
This video is misleading. The quality of nursing homes in Canada is a travesty actually
And the privately run ones are a money pot for their owners while being a hell hole for the poor residents. But that is a seperate thing entirely that is not relevant to this video.
Even the govt run ones in Canada are DRASTICALLY UNDERFUNDED AND UNDERSTAFFED, so the care levels are lacking, but they are far better than the privately owned, for-profit ones are. By a long shot! In any area, the govt outfits are ALWAYS FAR SUPERIOR, because they're much more closely regulated.
Everyone in Canada needs to make sure that everyone who knows them knows not to ever let them go to a private nursing home, unless they are paying for luxury, and unless they are verifying on a constant basis that the luxury is indeed being provided!
This is because private nursing homes are the biggest scam going in all of Canada. I know this from many years of personal experience in 2 provinces. You get the funds to buy some old building, andthrow a bunch of beds in it. You do have to start off with several staff who are qualified nurses. But any old person with any old bachelors degree in anything can be in charge, and they don't even need to learn on the job, or even be there. Hire a certfied dietician part time, and 1 or 2 nurses to do all the medical stuff, and hire any old bums off the street to do the grunt work, and you're all set!
I'm NOT saying all the people doing the grunt work are bums off the street, NOT AT ALL, but I am saying that they can be, and nobody higher up gives a damn. Many of them are great people, and very professional, but many are not. Many are lazy and abusive. They are not at all properly hired, oriented, trained, supervised, motivated, disciplined, or paid. These are the vast majority of tje workers there, and there are less than half the number of them than are really needed.
There are such low levels of staff, and all the things I mentioned above are going on. So how on earth can the few good nurses and nursing aides, or whatever title is given to them, how on earth are theysupposed to deal with all the elderly and sick people that foisted on them every day? It simply cannot be done, and it isn't the fault of those staff that these places are failing. It the government's fault for allowing this situation in the first place! Their own nursing homes are drastically understaffed and poorly run,and the private ones are 100 times worse! How the hell private ones were ever allowed is a mystery! Obviously some rich people realized this would be easy money, and bribed some govt members to pass a bill allowing it. Simple as that.
Out elders are being warehoused, neglected to death, and abused to death. It needs to stop! Do we want to be next? Because we will be. But I been fighting this battle for 25 years already. Nobody cares about their own parents even, once they get that old, and everyone is in denial that it will ever happen to them.
Here's a bulletin for you. Your children will NOT take care of you, no matter how much you all love each other, or how much cash you give them. It will not happen. And in most cases that won't even be their fault. They will not be qualified to give everything that's required. You WILL BE put in a nursing home and YOU WILL BE NEGLECTED AND ABUSED UNLESS THE SYSTEM IS CHANGED NOW.
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Get active on this! Private nursing homes need to be regulated at least as much as govt ones, if not more, or better yet eliminated. It will not kill the Canadian economy, as your right wing cousin thinks it will. Will you even care by then?
Believe me, you will care a lot more about how often your diaper gets changed, because right now old people are being made to sit in their own waste. A lot of them are fully capable of using a toilet on their on, but they require help to get onto the toilet, and there aren't enough staff to do that. So everyone wears diapers, whether they need to or not, and the diapers are changed only when the overworked, underpaid, badly treated staff get around to it! THIS WILL BE YOU, I guarantee it!
Remember that! And do something about it.
Contact CARP, the Canadian Association Of Retired Persons. They do great work! They provide a great magazine and website, travel and car insurance, and a membership is dirt cheap. They already do fight for us all, but even better yet, ask them what you can do to help, because if we don't ALL get off our behinds FAST, we will be the powerless ones in the diapers! Your children will not and can not save you from it. You can only help yourself.

I'm still quite able-bodied, but not like I used to. But Parkinson's has opened my eyes and heart to reach out to others who might be struggling with diseases like this.
So, if you want to know what you can do if you know someone in a situation like this, reach out and ask if you can pick them up for lunch, or take them to a car show, or whatever. I've vowed to try to do this for others who have it worse than I do hoping I'm paying-it-forward.

My father very briefly encountered Terry Thomas at the height of his fame. My dad was a London postman at the time and the Savoy Hotel was on his round. Terry Tomas was standing by the entrance, when my father trudged up in the poring rain. Thomas took his famous cigarette holder from his mouth and looking directly at my dad said "Bloody weather" R.I.P to a fine actor, such a tragic end.

We live in a world that a 20 year old who pushes a ball around gets £200000+ a week and they're still not flipping happy. Yet a national treasure who enlightened the nation for decades lived his final days like this. Shameful.

The thing is though, as it says in the video he lead a glamorous life living in luxury. So, if you choose to live like that and spunk all your money, don't be surprised or expect any sympathy when you're old and skint!
