Coming Out to My Conservative Christian Dad On Camera

  • I decided to come out to my family in honor of National Coming Out Day and my 23rd birthday. I'm sharing the video so that it might help give courage and inspire anyone that may still be afraid to come out. I was terrified my whole life of people finding out I'm gay, especially with my extremely conservative parents so I know what it's like. My dad gave permission to share this as he feels the same.
These are the resources I gave to my family:
    “Prayers for Bobby”-
    • Video
“For the Bible Tells Me So”- Netflix
    The Bible and Homosexuality-
    whosoever.org/bible/
    “Fish Out of Water”-

    • @nickm.5931

You're right. And reeeally all the situation is is that certain people have just had Christians give them some sort of criticism (could be good or bad), and than they make it widespread the idea that Christians in general are judgemental, and that's all that people see because it is more surprising or attention-grabbing than the situation that wouldn't be shared abroad, where a Christian gives advice to a person, and a person is glad for their advice. Primarily the point is that Christians rarely are judgemental, but the judgemental ones are given representation for all of Christianity.
Also, people shouldn't say that Christianity is an false religion simply because Christians sin regardless of what the Bible says. If you told me that you and your family had a principle in your life that lusting after women is bad, and then I see your brother being flirty with multiple women, should I think that you and your family are completely immoral, and should be ignored no matter what you're saying? Of course not. Hypocrisy is one of the most common sinful judgements that a dude/female can commit. I do it all of the time, when I'm choosing to ignore what I know is right. However, I believe that I should strive to have moral principles in life that I should follow to the best of my ability. I just ignore the morals whenever I'm choosing to be sinful, which is obviously wrong.
This is the same predicament that every single human alive deals with. Although, one man may not have moral principles set in stone in his mind (and there may be moral principles he has wrong), whereas I have moral principles that are set in stone, because I have thought about them and decided that they should be true.

TheElementalSponges tbh it depends. My family's Christian and they hate gays. They go by the "old ways". Where they say how God made man to only be with women. However, the Christians who are open minded remember that there's another thing. That God loves everyone. No matter what, if they're gay, bi, trans, etc etc. I wish there were more christians like this. Especially in my church. Im not Christian myself, as I refuse to believe in what people in my church are forcing me to believe in but I've been going for awhile.

My kids will grow up without the idea of "coming out". If you are queer or not, that's just the way you are. It's how you were born. Basically my son will say, "Mom. This is my boyfriend Tom." or my daughter with, "Mom. This is my girlfriend Janet." or however it plays out. My kids could come to me telling they want to be a different gender or nonbinary. As long as they are not hurting anyone or themselves. I don't care who they are. I will love them for who they are as people. And every parent should do the same. I want them to grow up open minded. To be compassionate and understanding of other people and themselves.

      1. Lesbians exist, one is talking to you right now, hi
      2. That's fucking false. I have never met a gay person "dedicated to spreading HIV", I don't have HIV, I have many male gay friends who don't have it but do infact dedicate a large part of their lives to raising awareness and doing work to increase donations and help to organizations that want to find cures and make treatment more available. The reason it grew to such a strong dominance within the gay male community was because there was no need to wear condoms, they can't get pregnant and diseases being able to be sexually transmitted weren't common knowledge. Now, because it is known, people do desire protection and are much safer, and encourage others to be safer.
      3. For your information, lesbians have the smallest amount of HIV and AIDS rates of any sexuality or minority. www.aidsmap.com/Female-to-female-sexual-transmission/page/1323529/
      4. It's a wonderful lifestyle. You get a relationship with the consentual partner you actually love, or have sex with your preferred gender, you have a proud and loving community that stands with you. +you are a little extra fabulous and strong for standing against hate c:
      5. Lesbians are literally stereotyped for having longgggg and stable relationships and committing intensely quickly
      6. While those statistics are biased and badly generalize gay people, What's wrong with an open relationship if they're happy? Then no cheating or hurt or jealous feelings because there's simply consent. They have a deep and loving relationship while having sex with other people. It's better to have an open relationship instead of a "monogamous" relationship where one or both partners cheat on the other, like with many straight couples. I'm in a monogamous long distance lesbian relationship because I love her and polyamory wouldn't work for me or her.

  • @AddcamDX

It’s nice to see the Dad handle it so well. The media loves to play on Christianity hating homosexuality, but what it fails to understand is the Christianity is that we should accept and love others.
The Bible is clear on what sin is, personally I think it is crystal clear on what is sinful and immoral. But regardless of what a sin is, all of others are classed as sinners in God’s eyes - nobody [except Jesus] measures up.
So the best thing we can do is our best, then we need to LOVE ONE ANOTHER; Jesus said that along with LOVING OUR FATHER, it is the greatest command.
Sending love to yourself and your father for a heartfelt video.

No thank you. There is no middle ground to this. I say and will just part ways. These kind of people just bring heavy negativity into my life. It says everything that when I get away from them, my life gets lighter and positive. Its like they try to spoonfeed me honey laced with poison.

***** Yeah, I think some people seem aggravated that the dad was so hesitant and somber about it, but it's actually pretty fantastic. He doesn't just flip flop his beliefs because of his son, but he actually wants to hear what his son has to say. One of the hardest things about breaking free from religious ideas is fear for yourself. It's completely understandable that this is hard for the dad, but he knows something's up, and he's ready to be challenged, because he loves his son, and love him well, even if that has an affect back on him.

    • @charlesfoster575

***** Thanks for a rare dose of humble objectivity. Not much said here about giving appropriate honor to a very loving Dad who knows from having experienced much more of life that his son is bound up in self gratification that separates him from God's loving guidance...and that if he won't listen to God's eternal Word for his own benefit, he certainly won't listen to his Dad. Letting loved ones make self-destructive choices while carefully measuring what little love they will accept from me is the hardest thing I have ever had to do...when in so many other ways I have been responsible for their total well-being and protection from harm. What is amazing is how much is at stake with our flippant choices...scary, looking back. I think accepting the simple humility of Romans 1:20 is the vital key that makes some of the harder spiritual wisdom make sense...which is the reason that such simple truth has so many detractors in this dark world.

+StokersDipper It's not my aim to start a discussion, but I strongly believe that such a "therapy" does not "work" in any way. First of all therapists who offer that kind of "therapies" have not studied this subject properly, a therapist is supposed to lift you up, to help you in each and every situation, and not make you feel bad or wrong. Secondly I, must say that people sometimes do lie. We usually do this to avoid certain questions or consequences for being honest. I surely cannot speak for everyone, but I can tell from my own experiences that lying sometimes gets you out of tricky situations. I would even go so far as to say that lying is a form of self protection. Considering this, it would be pretty reasonable to say that lgbt+ folks are most likely to lie when forced into these so-called therapies.
I'm glad you understand that being gay is, in fact, not wrong! :)
PS: wearing a clown costume everyday is a lifestyle, being gay isn't. :)

DontNeedToKnow84 I'm a Christian and I do agree it's strange. However I talk to a picture of my dead friend everyday. I think talking to God is the same as me talking to my friend. You can talk to them and express your feelings, which is a huge stress reliever for some, it can also give you insight on your life problems. You know they're there but you can't see them or hear them. I believe God answers some people by influencing their own conscious, logic and morality. I've seen physical things that I would call his miracles, but I don't believe he can vocally speak to you. If you contradict this I'm cool with it, I love seeing other people's thoughts on religion! In my opinion it's all about what you believe is right. No one can be right or wrong because it has to do with YOU. It's your choice to believe in what you believe is right and you should never let anyone try to persuade you otherwise. I grew up forced into Christianity and the way it was portrayed to me by the church, some family members and the media made hate it. They acted as if it was a cult and it is no such thing. I was surrounded by people who were using a sick, twisted version of something that I now believe is good. It's your journey as a person. Find what's best for you, whether it be Judaism, Muslim, Christian etc or atheism.

Dangerous Joy unless you're dead you have no idea what is "right". It is your choice to put faith in what you believe in and power to you! But it's ignorant to believe that you know what comes afterwards. There's nothing wrong with having faith, faith is great but none of us know for sure what comes after this

Your story is so very similar to mine just in a different time, I remember as a young teen being outside one night and looking at a very big full moon. I had spent many years praying to God to change me, to heal me to be straight. This night I prayed even harder for that healing. I guess I expected a loud voice from heaven or something but again I got nothing. I remember getting angry that He would not answer so I finished that prayer with my asking that if He would not heal me then take me out of this world this very night because I just can't take it anymore. God never did heal me and years later I realized why. After finally accepting myself many many years later, my life suddenly began to bloom. It was then that I realized that God did not heal me because there was nothing to heal, I was exactly as He had made me. For this I will be forever grateful. Best Wishes.

Basing your life on a book, obviously written by men and influenced by the biases of the times, showing the primitive middle eastern desert tribesmen mentality from 2000 years ago, is a WASTE OF A LIFE. it's 2014, here in the civilized world, we should know better.. I mean the very same book says its a sin to eat shellfish, you cant grow crops next to eachother, you cant wear clothes of different fabrics, and the punishment for rape is for the rapist to marry his victim and pay her father 50 sheckles of silver. . I mean, what kind of god would write that?? if this was all true, then this world would just wouldnt make sense

Bear Kuma, the bible has always reminded me of one episode of RECESS, very old animated show don't know if you'll have heard of it, where they find an old copy of the rules of the playground for that time period. They decide to apply them to their current playtimes and realise they just make no sense because the rules were written for a different time! Sound familiar? The bible just doesn't make sense to this time period, some teachings I'm sure will be last because they're based on the most primitive moral rights and wrongs but as the world changes so should our moral compasses. :) I highly recommend watching that particular episode of Recess because even as a kid it got me thinking of the parallels between the playtime rules and the bible scriptures.

A long process to understand that being gay is not necessarily fatal and will not necessarily get you thrown into hell. Perhaps just loving all people, whether they be gay or not, is the right answer. For some people this is a very long process because they are challenged to take everything they learned throughout their life and see it in a new way.
