  • Went to the river, caught some bait, used some rocks and caught a striper! The beginning of the video is dark and tough to see, just keep watching. The purpose is to share with you the experience exactly how it happens. It's dark, it's early, my morning begins in darkness. Enjoy!

    We did something similar over here on the West Coast in Oakland, almost identical to your method, but we used live saltwater gobies (mud suckers) instead of herring. 😎🎣📹👍

      30lb mono tied to three way swivel. The hook is tied to 50lb mono with 36” leader ( why 50lb? Rocks are sharp), lastly I use a three ounce sinker on 15lb mono and about 38”-40” in length.

    • @RDO156
      @RDO156  2 роки тому +1

      There’s nothing in the net. I reel a swim bait over the net to catch the first herring, which then is placed on my line. That herring then attracts others.

      Swim bait to attract the first one. Lift every cast until one is caught. After that, let the fish do the work to attract others and lift when they come over net.

      @@richtiberio530 my advice would be get yourself a place to sit along the river. If you can’t catch herring yourself, buy some. If you can’t buy live herring and have you use chunks that’s okay, but you’ll also get hits from eels and catfish which gets annoying. You can also purchase bloodworms however once again, you’re opening yourself up to catch other species. I use a 3 oz sinker which hangs just below my hook, which is on a 36” leader.
      Give it try and good luck!

      Where I fish, no. I mean I suppose you could get lucky....guys troll with them....There are several anglers out there I’ve seen on UA-cam videos that do use jerkbaits from shore but they are fishing the flats, shallows etc. . It always amazes me how well they do with them. I’ve been fishing the same location for 29 yrs from shore and everyone fishes the bottom with either bloodworms, live herring or herring chucks.

    • @RDO156
      @RDO156  4 роки тому

      You can do the open bail trick with anything you want. I personally wouldn’t do it but that’s just me. I don’t want to be bothered with eels, catfish, perch etc. They sometimes will pull the rocks/stick and it gets to be annoying. Learned that from experience. All personal preference, try it and see how it works for you. Good luck! Let me know!

      I tried chucks of bunker last year for the first time and was unsuccessful however that could have just been a bad day. I know stripers are known to eat the three you mentioned but in my experience the most common and successful baits in the Hudson are bloodworms, herring and eels.

The weekend warrior catching herring for bait a few times a month I also don’t think is depleting the population either. It’s only a matter of time before we’re not allowed to even catch and use herring for bait. I’m praying that doesn’t happen but it wouldn’t surprise me if it does. As for your striper, that had to be a tank!!! Congrats! I’ve caught many stripers over the years but never one that big! As for me keeping stripers, I release them.
