You can skip Resist Cold altogether, or throw a token amount of points into it after maxing Veng, Conv, Res Lit, and Res Fire, and also depending on how many points you put into HS if you decided to get it. Another point is that Veng's damage calculation for the elemental damage is based off the weapon's physical damage, and only the weapon's damage, meaning extra ED from gear like Fortitude and LOH doesn't factor in to it. +Dmg also doesn't factor in, meaning Grief should be avoided (why most say Travs are best boots for Avenger is beyond me). Beast is also out as the ED from the Fanaticism aura doesn't factor in, either, though if it did, it'd be a strong option because of extra IAS and AR. Barnar's Star is ok, but its inherent elemental damage isn't factored into the weapon's physical damage, so it ends up doing less damage than you'd think (still usable though because of its high IAS). I'd love to try a Phoenix on mine, but I'm short the runes to make one in a weapon.
Funny you made this a few days ago, I'm planning to make a Vengeance pally but I'm going two handed with it. Ideally your main weapon i think you want is a botd or Doom 1 hand or two hander for me! Haha 2 to all skills gives bonuses to each of the synergies and the other mods are pretty clear also. Dream is a strong choice for a helm. Dragon is a good option if you want a shield. COA is good if you find yourself dying more because the DR and socs for adds will help. Few armor options would be Fortitude, Chains of honor (maybe the best choice) and this one might surprise you Treachery. Treachery is cheap but it offers some decent stuff first cheapness but also Venom level 15, Fade 15 for DR and resist. Then finally it gives ias that you might be lacking. Fhr is also nice.
You could do ubers pretty easily by just going into it with a smiter with budget build, you could also go something completely crazy and unneccessary like I did and build a max ias last wish zealot but smiter is easier
@@Alexandroidd Yeah. Far be it from me to challenge Mr. Llama on anything D2 related, but I have seen better Avenger build guides than this. You should be walking around with level 25 Conviction on almost all of the time, and AR is simply not an issue with that.
I can't believe i've never played this build... it's like playing a mage in a heavy armor. on a different subject, is retaliation build possible in D2 on any character? I've tried going over the wiki to check for the necessary items but i got lost. Also, what wiki do you use to look up D2 related stuff? Thanks, @MrLlamaSC ;)
Thank you so much for putting together this guide! I have always wanted to make a Vengeance Paladin. I do have questions about low levels though. Before you get conviction, will Might increase your Vengeance damage as well since its all based on physical damage? Or is it only useful for normal attacks? Also, for low levels (normal), I'm assuming that a Blessed Aim mercenary is the best to use since your attack rating is bad? Or should I be using Prayer for survivability?
This is my favorite build in D2, have played it more than anything else. I would suggest just playing a Holy Fire + Zeal strategy until 30 then respec'ing. Avenger builds do NOT have an AR problem as the build definitely runs around with level Conviction on almost all of the time, but trying to force yourself to use Vengeance as your main attack below level 30 and untwinked is very frustrating.
When you attack with vengeance, your normal physical damage goes through as with your usual weapon swing. Vengeance adds additional magic damage to the attack which has some restrictions. %ED from might will not add to the magic damage but will increase your physical damage. So might will help, but not in a meaningful way at a low level.
The Famine runeword is pretty good for Vengence if you have the base and the runes to make it because it is elemental based. Also by having Soul Drainers Lama you don't have to worry about AR as much because it has -50 monster defense per hit.
@@chrisp2272 Also very true on players 1 but since this is Single Player you can change the players count to a higher value to where the Soul Drainers would matter. Just saying. Also it would help against bosses who don't take 1 hit to kill.
@@Fender178 Guess I didn’t really address the Famine part: it’s really a mediocre wep for vengeance, especially for the cost. By the time you have the runes, you could have rerolled an Oath to high ed, and Oath is going to do more dmg since it’s eth (Famine is just trading dmg from base weapon dmg for the inherent ele dmg from Famine). Oath also has 20% more ias which is going to go a long way to hit breakpoints. Oath also has more potential bases from Cryptics to Scourges to War Spikes to Zerkers. Famine it’s basically Zerker (which you probably don’t have before you have a good Oath base) or you’re losing a ton of dmg with a non eth War Spike, or you’re losing too much speed with a slower base. Famine does have ignore defense, but conviction will lower defense so much anyway, it just doesn’t matter. Max dmg GCs are probably the way to go, and they’re going to boost AR anyway. Back to soul drainers: I couldn’t tell you what to expect on Players8, but if you up the playersX to a point that you need 4+ hits to kill, you’re going to hate the build, and your merc is probably doing serious work. Let’s say a monster has 1000 Def. Conviction is taking it to 100; which is certainly over 90% to hit, if not capped at 95%. If you hit with SD, it’s down to 950, and conviction takes it to 95. Next hit it’s down to 90. You’re just not going to notice the - Def on trash. Prob won’t notice on bosses anyway. And if you have any crushing blow, 1 point smite is probably a faster boss killer.
@@chrisp2272 Yeah very true that there are better weapons out there than famine. Even Death would be a very good option due to deadly strike and crushing blow it offers. Yeah Famine isn't the fastest weapon which is indeed needed for Vengence and it is more expensive rune wise. If it were me I would save up for eth BOTD, Oath or even Death. Death would be good against bosses while oath or BOTD would be good for everything else. Yeah Vengence isn't really a p8 build and yeah if it takes a lot of hits to kill stuff then yeah you would hate the build.
You could have taken this into an absorb build. Lightsaber and wisp projector and thundergods belt for max Lightning, Hotspur boots and exile for fire. You can swap out ravensfrost with dwarf star when not in danger of being frozen. @@bobguy6542 I know it does not add attack rating, but it does reduce the defense of monsters, making it easier for you to hit them without the need for high attack rating.
Hey MrLlamaSC, maybe you should look at this game: Stone Shard. It does have a lot of perks that you usualy says that you like, like iventory tetris and meaningfull decisions. It is on green light tough...
So i started again last week. Made a Vengence pally. Doomz dream helm dragon armor and exile. Finding out I can kill things easily in hell but yes he's slow. I do 6-8k Vengence dmg at the moment. I really wanted it to work out but I think it deff has limitations. I think it's very possible if the auras stack to have 2 items that give holy fire (dragon armor and hand of justice wep) and have 2 items that give holy shock ( dream helm and shield) I think that would do wonders dmg wise but would have to eliminate cold. I wish there was a dual holy freeze but i don't think there is. That's probably the highest dmg Vengence you could make
Why do you need high AR in this build? With conviction lowering the monster defense -90% wont your chance to hit be dominated by the level difference between you and the monster instead of AR/defense? It seems using angelic ammy+ring is way over kill here.
you dont need a lot of AR in vengeance build, nothing has armor because of your aura. Act 1 merc with faith bow fixes your "no fanaticism" problem. i also prefer Exile RW > HoZ but i have an HOZ in my 2nd slot for casting Holy shield.
I'm really thinking about running this on D2R day1 to help all the cold sorc's run through the game. With the plan that they rush my sorc when we're done, and I can get to farming as well.

I've heard this is the worst "viable" paladin build there is. How bad is it really compared to hammerdin or smite paladin? Or do they simply do different things?
I've been playing for a long time and the vengeance skill has always been a little hazy. I do know that it should be classed as an elemental skill, but the new diablo Fandom webpage (this differs from old arrest summit page) describes it as physical, I believe this is wrong. As if to confirm this Vengeance will receive bonuses from 'plus to' elemental skill items. I know for certain crushing blow doesn't work just from playing, this ability removes a set percentage from a monster's health based on its remaining hp and this calculation isn't based on your weapon damage. I wish crushing blow did work, it would be great. You can always use smite to get crushing blow on tough enemies if you like, but obviously you won't benefit from the full synergies, but it's still great especially on bosses. As for deadly strike, whatever partial amount of physical damage is left over that could benefit this ability would be negligible as most of the damage done is converted to elemental anyway and this obviously can't be doubled. I don't claim to know the full mechanics and have read numerous posts saying lots of different things, but just from playing I know I'm more or less correct, sorry for rushed post, I need a coffee :)
Do you think you could use an act 2 merc for the conviction aura allowing you to still use fanaticism for the increased attack speed for better single target DPS against bosses?
Personally I would do it the other way around if I wanted Fanat too: give Beast or Faith to a merc. The level 25 Conviction's impact on Defense and breaking immunities is huge, not to mention it "turns off" Uber Mephisto's Conviction.
It's not worth it. Vengeance does bonus damage based on your weapon's damage. Holy Shock does bonus light damage per strike. It's more worth your time to go with zeal on the dream build to get as many extra strikes as possible in. True that you can buff resist light to increase your holy shock and 1 of the three trees in your vengeance damage, but it just won't stack up to the extra attacks.
You can only put 20 into a skill. However, you can add as much plus skill as your paper doll can carry lol. Most skill have diminishing returns per point anyhow though. Game is too fun, go wild!
im so confused by your build. the vengeance build was specifically made to combo with the 3 auras. Holy fire / freeze / shock. Vengeance then takes that fire cold light damage 1-5k and multiplies it by 500%. so why are u using conviction? 3 builds fire cold light vengeance specs. its 3 builds in 1 since u wouldnt have enough points to do all 3 at once. also conviction drops their defense by over 80% u were talking about ar.. but the aura cripples their def ur ar should be fine u didnt miss at all even at 73%
Vengeance doesn’t work that way. It only multiplies weapon damage it won’t affect holy fire or any other elemental aura. Conviction is the go to choice by effectively doubling your elemental damage. You’re right about the ar part tho
that vengeance build is too hard when you are starting. when you have nothing its very hard to grind this build. its look easy bec u have tons of items but when your just starting
not a end game player so far although finished hell game before, why is conviction useless above level 25? is it minus 100% resistance and cannot go further?
The problem with a lot of the skills is that they suffer from the huge diminishing returns. They were reworked when they added in synergies but a lot of the skills have crazy diminishing returns. Like look up weapon block for the assassin and a bunch of other dumb shit.
@@NinjaSushi2 It's not even diminishing returns for conviction. At slvl 25 it literally is maxed at -150%. Further levels give more -%defence, but it's like -1% per 5-6 slvls. I honestly would go to lvl 5-6 in conviction and spend points in vengeance synergies until I've got almost full endgame gear.
If they are gonna have the same ridiculous drop rates on the new D2R I'm not buying it. Played thousands of hours of D2 and never had a ZOD, quite a few Cham and some Ist, never saw a BER or a ZOD. This is 100% BS grindfest and I hate that.
As someone who has had the same experience as you in regards to rare drops, I have to say, stop worrying about collecting everything and just enjoy the ride. You can have so much fun in D2 without high runes and gg uniques, just gotta get used to a different pace of play. If I top out a character and start feeling like the game is getting grindy while I'm searching for an upgrade, I start a new character. The true lasting power of D2 is the sheer variety of experiences you can have playing through the game, so I try to lean into that.
@@garudave The problem is you can't finish the game (kill the Ubers and Uber Diablo) with most chars if you don't have stuff that has 1 chance of dropping after 30K hours and this is very bad. I enjoyed the season 22 of D3 with my Monk 10x more in that regard, went top 30 leader-boards without even trying with 1.3K paragon.
@@attractivegd9531 www.theamazonbasin.com/wiki/index.php/The_Poorman_takes_on_Uber_Tristram ua-cam.com/video/UI2dIY-hSro/v-deo.html It's a compromise to have to play a Smiter to beat the ubers without gg gear but to be fair, the ubers were added as post game content geared towards challenging the online community. If you're playing solo self-found, you can beat Hell Baal with any character. Just look at Llama's speedruns through hell, he never has any high runes or high tier uniques. That's the edge D2 has over D3, progress isn't just a gear check. In D3, you can have all the knowledge in the world about tactics and skill load outs, you'll still be filtered by the numerical demands of progressing through Greater Rifts. That's why I wouldn't compare the two games, they're trying to do totally different things. Same with Path of Exile, it's just not worth comparing to Diablo 2. Compared to those games, Diablo 2 is quaint.

I don't claim to know the full mechanics and have read numerous posts saying lots of different things, but just from playing I know I'm more or less correct, sorry for rushed post, I need a coffee :)
Do you think act 5 merc with beast is similarly good as the act 1 with faith? What kind of option you have for act2 merc?
I think I will try this when resurrected hits :)
i have a vengeance pala. fully geared with 3max/ar/life small charms full inv. Its still pretty shit. what to do?
is you had an infinity merc couldn't you then use that for conviction and then stack concentration onto your damage?
Would a grief pb be a better weapon? With the base speed and flat dmg?
Do you think you could use an act 2 merc for the conviction aura allowing you to still use fanaticism for the increased attack speed for better single target DPS against bosses?
Personally I would do it the other way around if I wanted Fanat too: give Beast or Faith to a merc. The level 25 Conviction's impact on Defense and breaking immunities is huge, not to mention it "turns off" Uber Mephisto's Conviction.
My brain automatically goes to D&D 5e when I hear vengeance paladin
Like for Llama's youtube voice)
Vengeance bowadin sounds intruiging
why do u need angelick if you have Conviction?
But Mr.Llama what about the double dream tesladin
This looks like it would be a good starting build for a ladder reset. Might be better ones ...
Your the man!!
Should i maxed conviction or salvation?
Do you have any set builds like Griswald?
19:40 got some arrows stashed just in case?
LLAMA = ladies love a mad artificer
Would you ever consider doing a dream build with vengeance
It's not worth it. Vengeance does bonus damage based on your weapon's damage. Holy Shock does bonus light damage per strike. It's more worth your time to go with zeal on the dream build to get as many extra strikes as possible in. True that you can buff resist light to increase your holy shock and 1 of the three trees in your vengeance damage, but it just won't stack up to the extra attacks.
Do these skills have max levels or can you keep leveling them forever?
I wish other armors had a lower requirements as a dusk shroud. It's so ugly.
not a end game player so far although finished hell game before, why is conviction useless above level 25? is it minus 100% resistance and cannot go further?
Also -res on conviction stops at lvl 25 at -150%.
@@NikozBG negative resistance is better I think. I forgot it capped at 150 until later.
@@NinjaSushi2 thanks for explaining
Ok. Why no guide that isnt already overgeared...
Yeah yeah yeah. Brownie stream when????
Pls make foth
YES
Vengeance Paladin, only good for Act2 Hell Players 1
Suddenly very relevant guides, seems suspect
Any particular reason you are on 1.13?
Probably the PlugY version that works with it.
first ;) i love you bro
Hmmm what's up with this UA-cam voice?

It's a compromise to have to play a Smiter to beat the ubers without gg gear but to be fair, the ubers were added as post game content geared towards challenging the online community.
