We try to reinvent the wheel... okay not really, but in this video I share with you a shortened and simplified method of making a removable bottle cap strap for your classic Nalgene water bottle. Similar to the modification done in this video • Paracord tricks Nalgen... but like I said, significantly easier, and less material. So sit down and grab some cord, plus your favorite water bottle and do it yourself!
Oh.... and don't forget, all the gear mentioned in the video (with a few exceptions) can be found down below in the "GEAR WE RUN" section!

This looks so easy. Thanks for the idea mate, im always kind of scared the strap on mine would just fall off one day. Cheers

Nice. Thanks for the idea. I used paracord to wrap the handle of an old rusted estwing hatchet I had. First, I soaked the hatchet in a pan of evapo-rust (that stuff works great!) for 24 hours, wiped it off to dry (all the rust is gone), clamped it on a table with a C-clamp then used a metal file to sharpen it, then made a similar type of wrapping on the handle using some paracord.

I have a couple of Heavy Cover titanium canteens which don't provide attachment of the titanium cap. This method will work perfectly. Thanks for the excellent quality instructional!

I really like what you did here with the "watch me" video. Admittedly I was laughing at how "easily" you cut off the plastic lanyard off...*fade away* it's done. HAHA.

Nice. I also like to put a little fire to the knots to melt them together and secure the knots.

Cool mod, the strap on my nalgene bottle broke about a week ago. I've had it for a year. This is a good idea.

    Thanks for sharing ur idea.🙂
I rather wait until the strap is broken before I do this. Unnessesary to cut it if it's still fulfilling its purpose.
One more thing. You didn't secure the knots of the paracord. After a while of usage it's gonna break. Use a lighter to burn the ends so it doesn't loosen up. Not everyone who knows that... (although I've read some ppl who also have that knowledge)

I would suggest using a lighter to slightly melt the cut ends of paracord to prevent it from unraveling

Interesting video, yet I question whether there is any benefit in removing a perfectly good retaining system for the lid. plus, Paracord doesn't fare well in a dishwasher and will get unsanitary quickly.
Yet, one can easily add the carry strap alone! - And remove for cleanup.
Maybe it's just better in your colder climate?

Well the point is so that you have a removable lid, plus, I am offering it as an alternative for people who have had the original strap break. Either way this could be put in the dishwasher, it wouldn't hurt it, and it is removable for ease of cleaning, or if you don't want a strap. I also like this mod because paracord is not springy like the plastic they use, so you can take a drink from the bottle without the lid interfering.

@@AlaskanFrontier1 Thanks so much for your quick reply and feedback. Your explanation of the benefits was very well done. And the point of the Paracord not interfering with a drinking motion is extremely important and I had not considered anything specific like that! Thanks again!

@@AlaskanFrontier1 If you want a removable lid you could just pull the lid and strap off. If your strap breaks I'm pretty sure they'd replace it for free under their lifetime warranty. I would think this would make it harder to drink out of because the lid is now flopping around more easily. You still have to hold it out of the way just like the original strap.

I've had my Nalgene bottle for 10 years and the strap just broke. This is perfect because replacement straps are poorly rated. Thank you for solving my problem! - Marisa

Thank you for your video. This is a great idea. Thinking about modifying this a bit. Have you tried using a Canadian jam knot to reduce the amount of bulk?

Well the reason I’m watching is because for rock climbing, if you just clip a carabiner to the plastic loop and fall on the rope the shock load snaps the plastic loop dropping a potentially deadly weight on anyone below you. Para chord is stronger
