Having the ability to drink water without getting out the bottle is a huge plus - this translate to the user consuming more water while out on the trail which is a good thing in most situations.
Cost : $30 isn’t bad for this system; Honestly a higher price wouldn’t surprise me at all. In general, a 48oz Nalgene runs around $13, a hydration hose runs around $15…
This system can be used with filtration devices very easily.
If you need to get water out of your bottle, you can do so easily and quickly which isn’t the case with a bladder.
You can easily change out the hose and bit valve if you like.
Straw can be shortened so that this system can be used with smaller Nalgene bottles.

No instructions were included with the system; while not difficult to figure out if you have ever used a hydration bladder but if you haven’t done so, you may have to go looking for some instruction on how to put the components together.
Sucking water through a hose kind of sucks - it is what it is. I rather drink from a bottle and get the quantity that I want quickly.
Bite valve isn’t my favorite.

Fun factoid: back in the mid 90s I worked for an outdoor store in Delaware. Some scientists from Gore came in and asked to see all of our hydration options on the market (hydration bladders, tubes, and nozzles were fairly new back then). They purchased a few of all the options as they were doing research to incorporate them into spacesuits for astronauts while on spacewalks. I was fascinated.

I lead trail maintenance crews here in Florida. One of my crew showed up with one of these for her 32 oz. She is also a monster distance hiker, I have a lot of respect for her. She is absolutely loving it. She has the Sawyer filter in line on it and the ease of use over the bladder is phenomenal. Personally I have always carried a bladder, but this gives me pause.
This is what I am planning on doing. Encouraging to read someone doing long distance enjoys it.
Being a paraplegic makes it kind of hard for me to do these kinds of things but, I can damn sure enjoy watching you do it. :)

I use the source hydration bottle conversion kit. I like that they have options to convert more than one type of bottle. So say if wanna leave my Nalgene home I can easy attach it to smart water bottle, or the sig style metal canteens.
Their bladders are the best, I like the tactical ones that have the wide open opening and screw opening. Their taste like glass tech is legit.

This is great. I dislike bladders simply because they mold easily if just a slight amount of water remains. This is a fantastic alternative.
I knew about them both some years ago, but it was almost impossible to find it. I wanted this very setup instead of the water bladder for those same reasons, glad to know that they are easier to find.
disabled handcycle and wheelchair athletes have been creating our own version of this for years. we just shove a camel back hose into the top of a sports bottle and off we go. depending on the type of sports bottle you may have to drill out the mouthpiece so the hose fits. made mine for about 20 bucks.

Interesting concept, that could be beneficial. Here is how I use both, a water bladder and a bottle. I carry water in my bladder and fill my bottle up from it, then I can add whatever drink mix I want to the bottle, without making a huge mess in my bladder. Been doing this since my teens. Works well, and I haven't had any issues. Great review Luke, thanks.
Good video, thanks Luke. I was curious about this product, but I went with the Source Tactical unit. Has a bleed valve that prevents a vacuum from building up as you drink from the bottle. As others have said, the Source kit comes with several connectors for different water bottles: Smart Water bottles, wide mouth nalgenes, and a couple of others. I use it with a bunch of different collapsible containers and with a 64oz Klean Kanteen. Great solution.
Like your experience with the Hardside Hydration kit, I didn’t care for the Source bite valve so I cut it off and replaced with a Camelback Hydrolock assembly. MUCH better.
I use both of them for years. Nalgene and msr bladder are great piece of kit for me. I use a bladder as main source of water for non water areas/or save for evening/when nalgene run out of water. Nalgene is always with electrolytes tablets, drink on the way without stop. I wouldn't use tablets in the bladder, simply because is harder to wash, plus you can run out clear water for end of the day. This idea it's great. Worth to try and easy to clean. I would say us it with bigger backpacks because high and weight of bottle. I like that close/open push button. In my msr system i've got sliding piece of plastic to open/shut pipe, which sliding quiet hard I have to say. That one looks good. All the best, S&H! Tom

Am based in Australia so it was a bit of a warm hike today. I ran one bottle either side. One with electrolytes and the other with water.
Sooo easy to clean as well!
I made a similar solution, a silicon corkscrew for vacuuming your wine fits the mouth of my steel 2l bottle and I can fit the hose through there. Best of both worlds, I have peace of mind knowing that my water is touching the least amount of platic possible and I don't have to unpack everytime I want to drink.
To all those people complaining about the Nalgene bottle shifting the weight... You can just put the bottle inside the pack close to your back as if it was the bladder, you know?

I purchased this hydration system because my T-Rex arms can’t reach the bottle holder while I’m wearing my backpack. I actually picked the product up in person from Justin, the owner (terrific guy) and the thing works like a charm for me. Thanks for the review. I used to use the nalgene bottles, however, I have since moved over to either using the BodyArmor sports water bottles or the old style, single wall aluminum water bottles. The plastic bottles, once worn out, can be pitched into the recycle bin. The aluminum bottles are bullet proof and you can use them to boil water if you really need to. I use the Katadyn hiker pro filter, and it works well with either of the two bottles I use. And they are much, much lighter than the nalgene and fit in the water pouches of most packs much easier.

Great video. I found using a usgi 2 quart canteen with a hydration tube works great. Combines bladder like container with the ease of using a canteen. Found a Israeli tube kit that is easy to use.

Having to bite down hard to drink is a no-go. I wondered about the vacuum and weight distribution issue as well.
First time giving a comment on a product that you tested. I bought it and I love it. I am one that needs a lot of water when I hike because of just cramping up all the time and even though I have a bladder type bag I just don’t use them because it takes up to much room in the pack. So I carry this bottle now with 3 other water bottle plus I still bring the bladder bag, but only use it when at a site to have enough water on hand if near a water source. I so enjoy your product reviews and this is one that is worth the money. Thanks LonSolo.

From my experience with hydration bladders during my stay in the Norwegian army, I just want to say that drinking from a bottle you keep in the side in your backpack can lead to an unbalance in how the back sits on your back. You typically want to pack the weight in your back as central as possible towards your back. The hydration bladder is genius because it's literally in the middle of the backpack close to your back. It also won't shift the weight around if you empty it, as it is central. So for long hikes I'd say that the hydration bladder still is the way to go.

G’day Luke, great review, it’s the never ending debate, already have some hydration bladders from work and day pack combos but I can see where the issues could sit in regards to a bladder on a multi day trail and I think this is that beautiful thing where you can see it being something that was knocked up in a shed tried and tested a few times until it started working, looks like a great product and will silence the campfire discussion quickly, I’m in Australia but

I threw away all my hard plastic water bottles once I adopted the Hydrapak 3L Bladder with a slider top. Cnoc bladders have copied the slider top used by Hydrapak bladders. Weight is always centered in my backpack whether full, half full, or empty, the entire Hydrapak drink system comes with a lifetime warranty & is made in America - Oakland, CA. Their bite valve is THE BEST; no leaking & water flow is 2nd to none. Simply remove the slider from an empty Hydrapak bladder, turn it inside out to clean & air dry.
I can easily sip, or guzzle by merely placing the bite valve in my mouth while hiking or resting.
Hard plastic water bottles, Nalgene or so-called "Smart" water bottles, take up space whether full, half full, or EMPTY, not so with bladders.

My old British army plastic bottles, had them for over 40years, bomb proof. And they smell good.

Source Tactical, One Bottle and a few other companies are doing this. It is a good move and provides options without doubt.
I personally love the Source Tactical kit, it allows you to have even more options with what bottle systems you want to use.
Combine it with the Wide Mouth Steel nalgene and then you can even boil water in your bladder alternative. (Weighs a little more but gives you more flexibility too.)
Agreed. A stainless Nalgene is definitely the way to go. Especially if you're preparing an emergency kit of some kind.
It's a very nice idea, i tried doing it but unfortunately the stainless steel nalgene needs a lid with gasket to avoid leaks, the plastic-plastic flange mechanism of closure in plastic nalgenes it's the only one that works with 0 leaking with both swig rig and source convertube, keep this in mind when looking for lids for stainless nalgene
Weight would even out as you wouldn't be bringing a cup etc
This is the only reason to consider this kit if you already own a water bladder.

Hello Luke. I am not a huge fan of bite valves but that system does have me interested. As a side note, my oldest Nalgene bottle is still in use and I bought it for my first 1994 A.T hike...... 28 years ago and still no leaks 🙂

I have been running a system very close to this for a few years now. It is basically the same deal. It has the lid that fits a Nalgene bottle connected to a hose a bite valve. I couldn't tell you the brand. I found it in a military surplus store and have never seen another one. I think its the best of both worlds and have enjoyed it. My only complaint has been the lid leaks if the bottle doesn't stay vertical. Seems that this company has worked out that problem. I will be checking out this product for sure. I bought a bladder hose replacement, drilled a hole in the cap of a smart water bottle and inserted the hose to make my own lightweight version. Make sure to drill a few small holes on the cap to allow airflow when you suck the water out.

I used the bladder for years. I stopped using it because I only used it for hiking. I had to remember to always clean the bladder after the hike. I use a bottle everyday not just on hikes. The bottle and the hose is the best of both worlds.
Lot easier to keep clean than a bladder. Good for RTW M/C travel especially the insulated model. Carried both on my trips bladder in chest pocket bottle in bags. Stuff the bottle with ice in summer of warm water in winter, hot coffee even. Had some Nalgeens bottles since '78. 44 yrs, still good
Lidl in the UK had a similar bottle at the start of summer and was about £6. It's about 800ml, you could replace its hose if you wanted to but its lid will fit a nalgene bottle.

Its really cool, I still have a couple old rectangular Nalgenes from the 90's I use, but I did upgrade to a Sawyer mini for when I needed to treat some lake water for drinking (got tired of packing in 2 full bottles which was about 100 oz.) Tried the hydration bladders, good for bicycling but not my favorite on backpacking trips. This might be my solution I need when getting aging gear in the future as I do want the bite valve type but without the soft bladder to worry about.
Nalgene calls the 48oz a 'Silo', however Nalgene also makes a kitchen storage solution that is a 48oz bottle with NO markings. Thats no measurements no logos... nothing and its a completely clear tritan material which means you can use the SODIS method to disinfect water. I have two of these bottles and may invest in this system.

I do both, I carry an empty Nalgene bottle on the outside of my pack mostly for a hot water bottle at night, or if I need to carry extra water for some reason. My main water carrier is a 3L military ThermoBak S, which is a water only backpack that I stick in my main pack, or take out if I just need it. The carrier pack protects the bladder from punctures and keeps the water cool.
As for that device, the biggest issue I have with it is you need a free pocket. I would not want to try and fit that inside my pack though due to the shape.
From a 50-year-old U.S. Army Canteen to a 32-ounce Nalgene Water Bottle. Heck Yeah!!!!!!! You can even throw a few iced cubes in the bottle if you have a notion to carry iced tea. Or freeze some tea right into the bottle for your ice. The downside is 32 ounces is much too big if you're planning on carrying a bottle full of Harvey Wall Bangers.
Source Hydration also sells a kit like this but with more bottle type adaptors on both their sport and tactical site. Another con- vs a hydration bladder these systems take more effort to get water out, not a deal breaker but it can be a pain especially when you're tired or winded.
Source Hydration out of Israel makes a similar product but has multiple attachments for several types of bottles. I run one on my insulated Hydroflask (not UL, but I like cold water). Best use: buy two, mount waterbottles on your pack straps and shorten the tubes to your mouth (like a straw). You can sip and hike without stopping.

My opinion - a great idea that I can easily reproduce as a "project" for probably half the cost. I prefer the bottle over the bag for visibility and cleanability even though it adds bulk to your pack. 😎
Yes it’s really great. I already have teo of those big nalgene. I usually freeze them to have cold water later in the hike. But all sizes of them are so easy to clean. I’ve been off going to bladders bc there’s always some comments about the plastic taste or leaking. This will be great!!
I've seen some diy of this before... that was years ago... but, yeah, makes sense. The main reason I don't use blaters anymore is form over function. I'd rather take up that room in my pack with gear, rather than consumables
Just an fyi for those already using Source Hydration bladders/tubes/valves.. Source makes 2 bottle adapters like this Hardside, the Tactical line has quick disconnects and allows you to move the bite valve back to the bottle for when you’re sitting around/eating.
I keep waiting for someone to make a hose system for the Geopress and Ultrapress… wish Source would so I could just swap the bottles around on my pack using the disconnects.
Looks like a great product. I personally like to carry metal/stainless water bottles like the Kleen Kanteen just so I have the option to boil the water without having to use another container...maybe they will come out with an option for that style bottle at some point....
I have and carry both. Usually gatoraide or mixed type drinks in the Nalgene bottle and water in the bladder. With the bladders you can get 100oz size which is nice.
The only thing I use a nalgene for is a pee bottle. I got rid of the bladders when smart water bottles became the rage. I DIY’d a hose with a mouth piece through the sports cap and hav been using it for years attached to my ULA pack strap. It was under $10 Total and I’ve replaced the mouthpiece a couple of times. The only draw back is that a couple of times I have to blow bag into the smart water bottle or open the cap to reduce vacuum pressure, but it easily done without thinking about it. Sawyer had a system for this set up that doesn’t seem to have a vacuum issue, but again it is way more expensive than doing it DIY. I just don’t think the smart water bottles can be beat, especially with CNOC bladders and squeeze for filtration system. But always great to get you take on things!

I have a 3 liter insulated bladder that attaches to my rear rack on my bike. I added an extra length of hose so I could clip the bite valve to the stem of my bike. The hose is insulated also an it runs the length of my top tube where my half frame bag attaches to the bike. I've never had a problem with it. And having three liters of water to consume means more ride time and less stopping to fill up.
I think my biggest drawback for a bladder is the hose...even insulated, the water inside gets warm if not hot and I hate drinking warm/hot water when I'm thirsty. In Iraq, we would end up spitting out the first few mouthfuls till we got cooler water, which in the end wastes water. A bottle though, takes up a lot of space, and you need 2-3 or more bottles to get the same 100ml or more that a bladder holds, meaning less space for load out/gear.
I never trusted bladders and used to love my Nalgene bottle but now I am all about going light so now I use Smart water bottles like most long distance hikers use. I carry three for most hikes.

I run a similar system called the One Bottle. Basically an adapter for my Nalgene lid. I use the UltraLite 48oz bottles with this kit. The 1.5L bottle is the same weight as my 2L bladder. It’s worth the trade off in my mind. This system is the future. There won’t be water bladders in the future if you ask me.
I have something like it from Source, a convertube. Very satisfied with it. Also using 2 Nalgene bottles.

Source Hydration do a product called the Convertube-same as the product you are reviewing, but with different diameter caps for a range of water bottles-there is a military and civilian version, from memory they have different valves-the civilian has a bite valve, which, like you, I don't like, the tactical one uses their storm valve. Source tactical has a similar kit. I like the Source hose and valve very much but it doesn’t have a long enough straw for a 48oz bottle. The Source hose and fittings are quick disconnect and have many accessories
I've had and loved the nalgene wide mouth 48 ounce bottles for several years now. It's a good amount of water to keep on you or have on a side of a pack but man, carrying around that much water when you need it cannot be beat. I use one daily and I keep one specific for camping and often will brew myself unsweet tea in it and keep a quart bottle of water when I go out in the woods. 3 of the Potable Aqua iodine tablets is the right amount for them too.

This concept has been around a long time. Even when I only started getting into day hikes 10 years ago, I found "smartube", which is a hose, about 5 or 6 screw on lids of different sizes, and a very basic valve with just a snug cap. I used it quite a bit, easy to buy a 1 5l bottle of water anywhere, and screw it on.
As for water bladders being complicated, they're better if they're roll up open top, not hole on the side with big round screw lid, imho. My Grigerrig (sp?) 3l solves most issues you discussed about bladders.

If im going tenting/fishing i go with the naglene bottle and a couple of platypus 1liter bags/bottltes. If sleeping in cabins/shelters and pack light i go with the bag, specifically the 3l source bag, it opens so you can scrub it down on properly. Usually store it open, put a glas in or something in it. No need to filter water here, in norway, so its pretty easy maintenance anyways.
I think it’s great. I hate bladders, but that takes all the hassle out of having a drinking hose.
Unfortunately, I’ve had several unintentional walking baths when using bladders (camelback). As such, they are no longer my preference. Water bottles are a little more inconvenient as times, however they do double as a nice roller when you need to take care of sore feet and muscles. 👍🏼 Thanks for the vid, I need to check these out.
Hydration blander was made by a VET that dislike caring two water bottles on 25 mile hikes! The water blander sits between the metal rack on your back and your metal pouch you better comfort!
it would be great if it had an inline filter in the bottle. then you could fill up the. nalgene bottle with water, screw on the cap, then keep on going. good review!
It is a toss up depending on how you need to pack your knapsack. One nalgene bottle unbalances your pack, being probably the heaviest item you are carrying, but 2 nalgenes would balance the pack. The advantage with the other is you place it inside the pack in the center so your weight is along your spine. The disadvantage would be if you need more room inside your pack to protect more gear from the rain, the humpback will monopolize needed space. So the best of both worlds would be to have a choice of either so you have more flexibility as to how you pack your pack.
What’s 48 ounces certainly is a game changer but the bottle is so tall. I would think that it would fall out of the mesh pocket on the side of most backpacks. Worth a shot though.

I like Nalgene bottles for around the house or for water carry storage and/or treatment on the go but I prefer bladders for drinking from while on the move (I've also never had an issue with bladders popping the way I carry it on my ruck).
