wow this video really does have a lot of hate! I don't get how people get butthurt about someone telling you advice, and they aren't pricks about it, its just funny how people have these amazing sound systems and completely ruin the experience by doing stupid ignorant mistakes, it's like having a Porsche and putting 87 octane and never putting pedal to the metal, I appreciate advice and even though I've had my Pioneer Elite VSX-42 for 3 1\2 years I'm still learning new tricks from these guys even

When you talk about how important bass is, the question is, what qualifies as "good bass" but is still not going to travel through walls or floors to bother the neighbors if you live in an apartment? I have an old Altec Lansing 5.1 with only a 5.25" woofer and I've even gotten complaints using that.

I work at Best Buys home theater and Magnolia department and I run into people all the time that have no idea how to set up their home theater system but my job is to help them get the right components for their setup and needs, I love how these guys spent a whole video trashing how people set up the or home theater but don't even give suggestions on how they should improve it, just a video full of insults

In the end it's very relative and it's also the personal tastes of each individual in that regard science does have a gray area. You can have generalized rules but it may not suit everybody's needs good video but I kind of disagree with some aspects of it. One other thing to keep in mind when it comes to any kind of audio reproduction people try to have sound reproduced either in their image of what they want reproduced or as close as possible to a natural sound and that's why you have an movies soundtracks to reproduce cracks brakes and whatnot the point is even speakers cannot completely reproduce a real live environment sound hundred percent yes speakers of came along way overtime I will say that we are in a great time to live in for sound better speakers were absolutely perfect there would be no reason for subwoofer speakers were perfect they would always fool you.

+trexx32 He would have 'simulated' surround. Stated, by Audioholics, not true surround as a discrete setup would give him. As you may well know, soundbars work off of useful trickery like bouncing sound around the room coupled with sophisticated timing techniques.

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  9 років тому +11

Excellent post Any and very true. DSP driven soundbars can give a good approximation of surround sound if you have the walls to bounce the HF effects. They still tend to sound a bit phasey but they are ALWAYS a better solution to just using TV speakers.

Geez... Guys like you are why I stopped going to audiophile meet-ups. You know how you get people into a hobby? You approach them with understanding and a willingness to help. The entire point of this video should be to help people who know nothing get through the basics so they can start to enjoy the benefits of a little knowledge. You make people gain interest by welcoming them. What you're doing is the equivalent of pointing at the person who can't read and saying, "Idiot, how do you not know this already? It's so obvious," all the while not realizing it took you months to learn to speak and years to read.
Maybe the people who got you started treated you the same way and that's why you think this is acceptable. But for me you're the type of person I have to defend myself against whenever I say, "Yeah, I'm an audiophile. No, not like that. Look, I don't really care about Beats. Sure, Monster's stuff is overpriced, I just buy cheap cables off Amazon, they sound fi- No I don't think anyone who buys headphones for less than $100 is throwing their money away, there are some good headphones for tha- No I'm not going to mock you for using Apple's stock headphones. That conversation gets really old. Thanks for helping make it necessary.

All the comments here are talking about bagging on the average person. As a car audio installer let me tell you about the average person... They won't look up anything. They will not put forth any effort to figure it out for themselves. They ask me. I try to explain it and they look at me like I'm from outer space. So my question is to the average person. How do you think I learned it? I had to look it up. I had to learn it. Quit being lazy and thinking you know. Do some research and know that you know. The examples in this video are showing people that think they know or just don't care. There is a wealth of knowledge out there. The internet is more than porn and FACEPUKE.

I work for Cablevision and are always going into peoples homes finding the crazyest surround set ups, weather they have all the speakers in the front, all the speakers mounted at the ceiling or simply have a HTIAB with a passive sub 👈 (that one hurts me the most lol) and they have the thought to brag about there somewhat "system". Research is key!! Took me about 2 years to finally understand the fundamentals of a good home theater set up, and man is it hard to pass it on to someone lol. Great video guys!

So I'm scratching my head with regards to all the dislikes then suddenly realize - I think you insulted 90% of your audiences cables LOLOL. Well, it's up to them to do some proper research! Maybe they will save a small fortune and end up with better speakers, then come back and thank you ;D 6 years mind how long are they taking!
Well what can I say, I appreciate you guys! You gentlemen train together ? (or did?) I can spot that pre recording bicep pump a mile away ;P
And Wilson Fisk I think played very well by Vincent D'onofrio who also happened to put in one of my favourite performances as Edgar from MIB - absolutely BRILLIANT!

(PS please help me out with regards to the question I posed on your nested bird post, about the Damping Factor on the two amps I have, there's SO FEW people you can trust in this snake oil ridden industry, I really have a dilemma about which amp is better for the Opticon 1 MK2 - A-S701 or RX-V2700)

I own my own Home Theater company and I can't tell you how much I run into this with customers. You do have to be careful telling them how bad their system is set-up. The "famous" ..... my nephew is an electronic expert set this up for us and I have to bite my toungue and just say...."that's nice", but this is how you do it right. After I'm done, they can't believe it is the same system. This is with customers that spent thousands of dollars on their equipment, but won't spend a cent to put it together right. It get's really frustrating. Btw, you guys are a little unpolished, but you are exactly right what you are saying. I've shared many videos of yours to "double" explain things to customers and I may have lost jobs doing so because the truth hurts....... lol

I set my cousin up with some cubes (not Bose, that's crappy gear) that sound amazing. I wish I could remember the brand. Grabbed them from BB Magnolia, set him up with a proper receiver to drive them and a good sub for fill. The system can't match the clarity and quantity of my towers but they do a good job for someone who isn't really an audiophile.
The problem with the Bose cubes, IMHO, is the godawful tuning. For their size the emitters have reasonably good excursion but the boxes are vacuum chambers. Punch a 1/4" port in the back and the low-mids come back in strong. The problem then is they're just too small to adequately drive complex sounds efficiently. They don't have the strength to push multiple, varying frequencies at once. They'd be better off built in to appropriately sized micro cabinets with multiple drivers and decent crossovers. By the time you finished paying for the name you could just as easily buy a 5.1 Logitech gaming surround system (I have a 530 for my gaming PC in a small room) and use the surplus cash for a headphone DAC and a month's supply of your favorite caffeinated beverage.
Maybe that's what Bose cubes are for: gaming surround in small spaces. That curvy UFO lookin' 'receiver' would pair nicely with a PS3...

Bunch of sensitive babies. Get over yourselves. Speaking from YEARS of professional experience, I can tell you everything they say is right. And their frustration comes from companies trying to make you buy stuff you don't need and the lack of education on the behalf of retailers. All they want is for people to get the most out of their equipment without spending money senselessly.

  • @kwbarron

I really enjoy your vids - they have helped me learn or clarified a few things for me. I - unlike ZenoDiac - think it sounds very natural and unscripted, other than your basic outline.
I built my theater up piece by piece over the course of several years, as inexpensively as possible. Inexpensive Onkyp 7.2 receiver, Matching Polk fronts and center (and Polk 12 inch sub), the surrounds are the same brand as well, bipolar surrounds on the side, normal surrounds on the back.
My son and I built our platform ourselves out of 2 x 8's and OSB and then stuck insulation in it to keep it from rattling. We also built 2 ft x 4 ft sound panels for the walls and put more panels behind the front speakers and in the corners. Finally, we deadened the back wall as much as possible with heavy black drapes, because the entire wall was full of windows that caused crazy echoes.
After re-calibrating (and modifying for me - I need a little more voice audio out of the center for my deaf self), I think it sounds really good. I honestly think the sound panels made the biggest difference of all of the work. Any ideas for tweaks from you guys would be much appreciated! I love tinkering, but I am always learning.

I understand the frustration when people do things wrong, and I get what the overall message these guys are trying to say; but I also understand there is a reason why they are the pros and regular people aren't. I don't get why these two would sit there and laugh at people for not knowing, when they clearly make money informing others. My grandpa is an audiophile who taught me early on about speaker placement. But I don't go vegan on every person I meet who's surround sound is all out of whack. You just make people less likely to want to listen to you by attacking them.

I agree. Not to bash you guys but TheMovieEditor is right. You points are all good, but your delivery needs some work. Perhaps splitting the list between the two of you instead of having one guy just accepting what the other says is an improvement. Make the list sound decisive, not appear as if one made it up and the other is just following along. A good script is in order.

Curious how many friends, neighbors and relatives are nervous about letting you guys "look" at their home theater system. Haha, funny thinking about it.
That being said I love your advice and plan to "correctly" calibrate my two Cerwin Vega subs...and consider the throw rug on that hard wood floor.
We do have a sound warping living room shape, will be looking for sound room schematics that come close to our room design...see if there's some additional things I can optimize.

Fellows, you missed a big big big big big one: placement of the monitor. I have seen more monitors placed over the fireplace than you can shake your fist at. A big SMH. The monitor should be mounted at seated height, eyes forward. Placement of the monitor too high can cause neck strain.
Unfortunately, most house’s are configured in such a way that you aren’t able to optimize your experience. So a really expensive solution is to reconfigure a room or rig up a man cave in the garage, or if you’re rich, add an audio room.
Lots of new houses have fireplaces right smack dab in the middle of an otherwise blank wall, so I would opt not to have the FP.

Decades ago the company I worked for did finish work in a 22,000 sqft house with a home theater that had really plush 'stadium seating' for 35 people, that was something. And no fireplace in that room. We did a lot of work on theaters as well.

That is so true what you guys say. I am a Dolby Atmos (Onkyo HTS 7700) owner and when I set up my speakers, I did not use the reflective ceiling part of the speakers even though a had a good 12 ft ceiling for that. I remembered professional audio systems. If I want sound there put the source there, so took a pair of Kenwood satellite speakers from and old HTIB system and used those for the ceiling and I could not be happier. After the room calibrations by the AccuEQ and some small tweaking of my own... Great!! Thanks for the real advice and not being on the bandwagon..

Nice effort, but you're spitt'n in the wind. I can safely say that somewhere around 90% of the TVs I've viewed in friends and relatives homes are configured incorrectly. They think they're watching HDTV. They're positive. And they're always wrong. Cable companies insist on enabling both low and hi def channels, and customers go to the low def, because those numbers are more accessible. Often, the high def signal is not selected at the source device. And, to add more confusion, aspect ratio settings are chosen as if this is a matter of taste, and not a matter of best and bad. Good grief.
Getting to the conversation about low level calibration is another lost cause. TVs are invariably set to offer the brightest picture under the worst situations: competing with full daylight. The idea that maybe a 2nd setting for more typical low-light, or night-time viewing, might provide a cinema-like experience is an inconvenience beyond consideration.
The price I pay for trying to help is actually quite low. I get oodles of home-theater envy. "What TV/projector are you using? What are those speakers? Wow. This must all be wickedly expensive." And the answer, of course, is "not really." Even my least expensive setup over the past 30+ years has looked like a million bucks. It's all in the extra effort to set it up correctly.

Definitely seen the speakers on the wall next to the ceiling for the fronts and backs more than once. I have a system that most audioholics or seasoned audio community vets would look at and dislike but will out performer most of the expensive equipment out there.
I have a Onkyo 7.1 receiver.. All my speakers are car audio in customer built boxes and I have a 2,000x2 American bass class D amp for my subs.. everything else runs straight off of the Onkyo and works beautifully... So my front speakers are towers that each hold a Audiopipe passive 3way crossover, 2 American bass VFL8D4 8" subwoofers, 2 American bass MX8DB 8" mid-range speakers and 1 American bass MX444T Tweeter... My center speaker is 2 American bass SQ 5.25" full range speakers and a MK444T Tweeter... my rear channels have one front mounted and one bottom mounted SQ 5.25" full range.. I have 2 subwoofers with down firing 2000 watt American bass XR-10D4 10" subs.. honestly better sound than any movie theater I've ever been to and it plays sharp clear music with a hard hitting bass line

People pairing up the wrong equipment and end up with total shit....sometimes, very expensive shit.
Many of the problems producing bad audio is the room....don't compromise by doing nothing.....compensate for the problem.
In an overly live room, for an example, having an amp that provides "that extra bit of detail on HF" is not a good thing, if the room is too live, taming the HF is what is in order. Using room correction is one way. By lowering the HF rolloff will rid the room of too much HF energy. And the output will be much smoother, not fatiguing.
If you have speakers with UHF radiators in a live room, give some thought to disconnecting those tweeters and just go with the HF tweeter...UHF tweeters was nothing more an a marketing gimmick upon the arrival of of SACD, DVD-A, claiming 50 khtz output.
Give some thought to what is needed, depending on the room, before popping out your cash.

I still use Pioneer VSXD411 series AV's. I couple it them with Pc's that have sdpif output. I put speakers just above standing height mounted to walls(no tripping on them) and a single powered KLH sub. I am one of those who will never use Horizontal Door Media Interface. I say that because it is a copy-protection gimmick, and the idiots that came up with widescreen and 16x9 are oblivious to the fact that the human eye has much more height perception than trying to watch a movie from under a closed door through the gap on the bottom. 5x3 would have been a better choice in my opinion. My brother bought a 40 inch lcd and it has the same height as a 32 inch 4x3 tv. A 16x9 would have to be really wide to get the same height as my 60 inch 4x3 rptv. I would rather use dvi-i than use that cheap fragile cable. Even a VGA d-sub connector has very high resolutions given the video card can handle it. I will never buy Blu-ray either because it is a dying technology with digital files and streaming being the greener solution. I also think anything above 5.1 is also a sales gimmick. Having a rear mono channel on top of 5.1 as in 6.1 and higher is not needed. That is what Dolby surround is for. I do agree with the mistake of buying into marketing fads when you have something that works. Keep in mind a receiver's main job is to amplify and switch audio. Last thing is most people I know could care less about the idea of HD video or audio, all they care is to sit down and watch something. Rather they use a microscope to watch on a phone or play a VHS, or whatever. Also nothing is obsolete as long as someone is using it.

This has not much to do with setting up a home theater correctly. I wanted to share this with somebody who would enjoy what I about to tell you. I buy a lot of reel to reel pre-recorded tapes on Ebay. I know they are at the end of there life span. But so am I. Most of the time the recordings are hit or miss. I have two really good Revox open reel recorders. One is a B-77 4T and the other a A-700 2T machine. I just received a Frank Sinatra Trilogy set of tapes. They were recorded at 3 3/4 speed. I did not know that until I got them. I guess I overlooked that before the purchase. I usually only buy the higher speed. Most of Frank's recording are 7 1/2 and very well done. I was worried that the sound quality would suffer because of the lower speed. Remember that these were the CD's of those days. Most of the time they were the best recordings you could buy. So I started listening to each tape. I was blown away at how great they sounded. I have a very high end vintage system and thousands very well made records and CD's. I could not believe how good the sound was from something recorded so long ago. Now here is the kicker! I was looking at another tape recording on Ebay. It had no song list, but it was a two track recording which are very rare. So I did a search on Google and found the same listing in different languages. Then I came across an October 1958 issue of High Fidelity Magazine about how poorly stereophonic sound was. I know how much you guys don't care for Dolby Atmos especially when used in the bouncy house method. Or with most other ways except the encoded material on Blu-rays. His name is Robert Charles Marsh - Chicago Sun-Times. This his quote: " Right now I am confident that in 1968 I probably shall still own some 78's, that Caruso recordings made in 1903 still will be available --- and selling --- and that many of the finest discs of the long-play era will be able to secure listeners. Stereo , for all its promise, is a new medium, emerging in a boom-town ATMOSphere in which people talk casually about four-channel 3 3/4 - inch tapes --- although no one seems to be marketing them --- and manufacturers are plugging the goodies they have to sell, hoping to distract you from the things they don't offer you." This is just one small part of the article. I thought maybe you would get a kick out of this. So stereophonic sound was the new unproved format. I guess what goes around, comes around again. Also this not meant to knock anything you are doing. Or to make any people mad that listen too or collect 78's. I should know about dead formats. I still watch and collect laserdiscs. Also I love watching your videos. They are very informative and help me gain a lot of knowledge before making a purchase. I am trying to decide on a full featured, top of the line A/V receiver or pre/pro right now. It is a very tough choice to make. Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo, Integra, Denon, Sony, Anthem, and Emotiva --- I am totally confused on which one to get. Thanks from all the wonderful work you do on your site.

Unfortunately, I have no choice. I was thinking of buying a stand and pointing the center speaker upwards towards the listener. I am someone who worked setting up custom home theaters, $100K+ and find it always interesting to see other peoples points and their advice. This video was one of the worst I have ever seen, just insulting people because "they are not doing it right". Can I have my 12 min back ?

In all forms of honesty, doesn't atmos technically compress the audio? I'm guessing it does because HDMI is only capable of sending 7.1 tops and atmos adds 4 extra channels out of nothing. If that is the case then we are basically going right back into the lands of optical 5.1 for what is for something that is for the most part a gimmick.

I'll admit, I don't have surround sound but I'm satisfied with stereo. My mistakes are the room acoustics and speaker positioning. In all fairness, I can't do anything about speaker positioning as a result of the way my room is set up. I can't get a good listening/viewing angle and have the bed in my bedroom not placed in the middle of the room. but I could get a rug and fix my other issue. Shame on me.

Considering the Def Tech BP8020 Stand Towers. Would it be better to set the towers to large in my receiver and connect with just speaker wire or set them to small and connect the LFE subwoofer cable?

I still prefer my son bdvlz1000w it still looks really nice ant the sound is still top notch. big thick carpets big sofas wallpaper furniture all works well with sound. and yes newer isn't always better. my old system is about 20 years old doesn't even have a hdmi lead. the thing is a beast though. nothing compared to my newer one though

lmao" turn up 16khz and your good to go" When studying mastering at school that line came up. Mastering engineers do it, so you don't have to!
