Red Alert 2: [YR] - Comparing Anti-Air Defenses
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- The Anti-Air Defenses are important to keep aerial threats away from your base. In this video we test and compare the three Anti-Air defenses, one for each faction. All of them cost 1000 resources. The Allied and the Soviets can only attack air units while Yuri's Gattling Gun can attack both land and air units.
The Patriot Missile seems to be the least effective since it attacks quite slow and it's missile travels all the way to the target thus giving a high possibility of missing it.
The Flak Cannon is quite fast with instant damage while also dealing splash damage. It's only drawback is that it deals low damage to targets that are away.
The Gatling Cannon can be considered to be the best one since not only it's versatile but it can also increase it's firing rate when focused on the same target for quite some time.

Although being one of the biggest weaknesses of allies: anti-air, its somehow balance considering the huge advantages that allies have in late games.
The Aegis Cruiser would like to know your location. And also what is the advantage they have late game?

Seems really fair, with the Gatling turret being a powerhouse when spun right up, but unable to loss focus without losing its killing power. Patriot being a good middle ground, and Flak being good for air crowd control, but not much else outside the best when having the aircraft right on top of it.
but Gatling can fire ground
@@nemou4985 Thats why I said its a powerhouse that needs to not loss focus or it losses its killing power, hence firing at ground targets compared to air targets
The flak turret is perfect against the allied lightly armored planes and rocketeers. It was clearly designed for allied vs. soviet combat. It was not designed to take down heavy armored kirovs. So yuri or other soviets kind of break the soviet AA concept, especially since the soviets only have flak as AA (not counting the apocalypse tank).
so the the rock to Yuri's scissor turrets is mass rocketeer? wish i had thought of that years ago when fighting against my dad
When you have a multiple flaks you get flak saturation and then they are great against any air target.
Damage is effected by range!? How can I play a game for so many years and not know lol. Don't tell me range effects other units and buildings too!
Damage usually is not affected by range, although FLAK bursts are an exception. And it works only for aerial units, if Flak Trooper fires at a tank for example, the damage will not change. Aerial FLAK bursts increase in damage the closer enemy aircraft is though.
Dolphins
the flak cannon's weapon is inaccurate, with a larger scatter distance the further away from the target it is. It also has a larger Area of Effect, meaning that it does damage even when it misses, with the damage decreasing depending on how badly it misses. When the enemy is far away, it misses by bigger margins, which in turn lowers the effective damage.
Me too.. didn't know flaks can do more damage that way
it's not range decreasing damage, it's decreasing flak accuracy
I thought the fact that the flak canon hit the target immediately made it superior but I was wrong because I didn't know there was a damage change with distance.
where is rooftops 2 >:(
@@Infarlock the question is not where, but when. Haha you can join my discord server to keep up with the latest news.

one slight weakness with Yuri is how limited the AA mobility is only having Gattling Tanks, no infantry and no naval AA. But it's not like i'm willing to fly over a Yuri base to drop bombs.
Another weakness is that the gattling turret can also target ground units which means that when an enemy throws air+ground at the same time at you you may find your entire anti air defense focusing on ground units that should be already covered otherwise.
@@Praetarius well, just deep defense then? Also I can't remember, but walls prevent gatlings from firing ground units?
@@darykeng I always forget that walls are a thing you can build, but yes that should work but would then reduce the cost effectiveness of the turrets a bit and also take up extra space you may want for proper units.
Yuri also has Floating Discs which can attack air unlike Allied and Soviet aircraft (besides the helicopters' weak attacks). They are probably less cost effective than Rocketeers for AA support though.
In fact the lack of naval AA can (under very limited circumstances) break the game for Yuri. There is simply nothing he can do to bring aircraft down when it is over water and his floating discs can't reach it. That way you can cheese with siege choppers, Kirov or even black hawks.
Strategies include:
-Bombing a narrow water passage with Kirov so no Boomer can get trough -> game breaking (if yuri can't reach the Kirov)
-Place Siege choppers on tiny islands and bombard the enemy -> yuri can only reach with UFOs (which is not cost effective)
-"Island hoping" with black hawks -> Yuri has to play catch-up with a hovercraft. If the enemy makes no mistake Yuri can not win this since hovercrafts are always slower
4:22 "Command received, I love you bye."
plot twist: he survived
Too bad, you didn't test how well each AA work in group vs aircraft. I would like to see if 5 Flak cannons and their splash damage can kill a group of Rocketeer faster than 5 Gatling turret and 5 Patriot or not.
I recommend such a demonstration too. It's rare to go up against a solitary air defense.
The Flak and Gattling would be similar. Flak better against Planes, Gattling better against Kirovs and Rocketeers. Patriots perform worse in large numbers because they are more likely to overkill (missiles will self destruct if their target is prematurely destroyed).

To avoid being easy target
Some structures are taller than the altitude Kirovs fly at, they have to adjust.
Another great video tg. One of the strongest anti air is Battle Fortress + Guardian GIs. It's a move and shoot turret. And if you somehow manage to put elite ones inside, then its gg
Cost effeciency...
That isn't cost effective against Rocketeers.
One thing I hate about yuri turrets is that spool up, lets harriers get off with merely scuffed paint.
I thought you would put the elite status Aegis against elite status Dreadnought at the end of the video 😂😂😂 It would be fun.
Allies should build the aegis missile systems as base defences :)
Very expensive to maintain and you have to build extra to protect it, other wise just build battle fotress and put guardians in it

I feel like there could have been one more test to showcase just how good splash is on flaks - get 3-5 of each turret, and make them fire at a swarm of Kirovs/Rocketeers. Would have avoided having to swirl around couple times.
Could u make a video about neutral garrison buildings
The outhouse is the best one
Cool vid bro
Well at least there is no "best/worst" in this one.
Unlike in Red Alert 1 where the Allied AA guns are sooooo much better than those toy SAM sites the Soviets have. :D
Did we watch the same video? the Gattling Cannon not only outperforms the other two in _almost_ every tested scenario, it is also able to fire on falling paratroopers, and can defend itself from ground attacks. In the unmodded game, it is easily the best AA defense.
@@silverwind4236 First, this video didn't even show paratroopers, so I don't know why you mentioned that as if it was in the video and the other person didn't watch. Second, all AA defenses can fire on falling paratroopers so I further don't understand why you said that. Third, being able to defend itself from ground attacks can also be a weakness - a smart player can send in some tanks first to damage sponge, and then planes can fly in unharmed to bomb targets because the Gatling Guns are too busy shooting tanks to shoot the planes. Granted, a good Yuri player should be able to counter that, but it's still a Gatling Gun potential weakness.
Doesn't look like easily the best AA defense to me at all. It's pretty balanced with the Flak Cannon, while the Patriot Missile is a definitive last place due to a slow rate of fire, the ability to miss (some of those planes dodged the missiles while turning around), and lack of anything special like the Flak Cannon's splash damage and the Gatling Gun's potential to keep firing and increase its damage output.
@@mjc0961 no, they can't. in the UNMODDED game, the flak cannon and patriot missile can't fire on falling paratroopers. It's a feature that gets added by modders. I've been modding the game for over a decade. I know what I'm talking about.
Using tanks to distract a gattling cannons does not work in reality, mainly because a Yuri commander never defends his base with JUST gattling cannons. A team of short range tanks just gets mindcontrolled and turned against the attacker. Artillery units don't draw fire, and the _only_ offensive unit that can draw fire is weakly armored (robot tanks), and not available to soviet players. If you can afford to 'draw fire' inside a Yuri base, you might as well destroy that base with the units you're using to draw fire. It shouldn't come to an air raid. Defending against such a tactic doesn't require a 'good' Yuri player. Even the brutal AI does that just fine.
The flak cannon has one strength - fire spread that is _only_ effective against AI players (a good human player won't let his Kirovs get that close to each other). The video clearly shows the gattling gun keeping up even in scenarios where the flak cannon has an advantage.
All of this only applies to the unmodded game. Every mod is different in how the modder decides to balance the game. Most of them allow all AA defenses to fire on paratroopers, and change the patriot missile to fire 2 independent missiles at once (firing on 2 aircraft simultaneously). These aren't relevant to the discussion.
I played both UNMODDED RA2 and Yuri, the flak and patriots DO fire to the falling troopers.
The Gattling Cannon and Flak Cannon clearly outperform Patriot missiles in every way. The only advantageous scenario for missiles is hitting single targets at long range (Gattling has less range than Flak and missiles).
Yuri can also use Gattling Tanks garrisoned in bunkers, which are much stronger than Gattling turrets, except that the Gattling tank can be targeted by Harriers/Black Eagles.
As I always say - Yuri's air defence is absolutely OP!
The problem is that his air defense is also his ground defense, not only being more pricey then pillboxes/sentries but also ceasing to function once the power goes out.
@@RRW359 Uhm, Tank Bunker with Gattling Tank, hello? It's stronger than a Gattling Cannon and costs no power.
I got a question: What happens if you load up Yuri Clones to the Battle Fortress and they mind control some units but then Battle Fortress with these clones gets mind controlled?
Maybe units which are controlled by Fortress will be refreshed 🤔
The final scenes are so good

What do you use to play this in 2020? I'd love to play again with a friend of mine.
Nothing but if you have problems running it try using the CnC net launcher.
People tend overestimate Flak AoE in general. Yes, it does have the most AoE out of all the defenses, no, it's not the size of Texas.
Gatling Towers are the best defense but, why would you when you have Gatling Tanks inside of Tank Bunkers?
Well, Gatling Tanks have a slightly lower damage output and can be killed by jets very easily.
That said, Gatlings ARE better because they're hitscan(instant hit, doesn't miss).
The Allies can pump out a bajillion rocketeers and that's like their best AA outside of naval combat(Aegis). Guardian GIs are also good especially in a Battlefortress NOT in an IFV. Elite IFVs are your other option--one of the best Elite power gaps in the game.
Lower damage output compared to what? A Gattling tank OUTSIDE a tank bunker has the exact same weapon as the Gattling Cannon, and the Tank Bunker increases its range, damage, and fire rate.
@@spectre9065 The Gatling Tank's damage output is lower than the Gatling Cannon's. The difference is very meagre though.
@@SoldierOfFate Where did you get that info from? Because according to the .ini files Gattling Tank and Gattling Cannon use the exact same weapon. Flak and Missile Turrets on the other hand use different weapons; they do more damage than IFVS and flak tracks but cannot hit ground.
The problem with Guardian GIs is that they suck against Rocketeers.
Gatling tanks in bunkers need more space. Therefore you want to use gatling towers at your shore defense if the enemy can get very close when he bombards.
Flak cannon = anti small air units, missile turret = long range and heavy enemy ships. Gattling gun = balance
When your focused on building more tanks and then you hear "KIROV REPORTING".
Is there any way to set up a map to compare all dedicated AA units/structures? It would be interesting to see how the Patriot fares against the Aegis etc.

Soviets: High Spread and Largest Splash AA, extremely efficient in repelling massive air raids than it's counterparts, Strong AA from unranked to elite.
Allied: Strong Single target AAs but are prone to miss faster targets or elevating targets than Flaks. Top heavy AAs, means heavily reliant on ranks to repel massive air raids. Outclasses both Yuri and Soviets when elite ranked.

How do you get different units to move in different directions at once?
SAM actually has longer range. Give RA2's missiles extra range! They need better velocity too, except Aegis cruiser ones that are already fast enough. They should also deal splash AoE damage and suffer a small delay for target locking.
Maybe implement 1. improved homing ability to counter dodging maneuvers, 2. multiple shot ability and 3. extra long range radar guided targeting (requires a working radar) on the Patriot missiles using affordable unlocks that require the battle lab. Then, radar guided SAM combined with spy on enemy battle lab unlocks missile defense. Shoot down ICBMs like the real Patriot Missiles do. The whole upgraded SAM package can also be made available for all factions with a new AA gun added to Allies.
SAMs targeting dropping paratroopers is quite far fetched. Let other weapons take care of them at low altitudes. Put the new Allied AA gun to good use.
In RA2, missile launchers suck bcoz grouped launchers are easily countered by rocket volleys and grouped targets as missiles launchers target the first incoming target and end up wasting most shots. Maybe some kind of grouped targeting algorithm or AI can solve this problem. All the missile units and structures will massively benefit from this.
Flak and Gatling guns have a common advantage of hitting targets instantly. (It's called hitscan, right?) Like the flak guns, the OP Gatling turret should also have limited accuracy at longer range, especially against moving targets. Gatling guns should also fire at most long bursts then slow down to a stop for short cooldowns. That'd be a big nerf though.
BTW the devs wasted their chance to implement American freedom brrrt. Let Yuri have some other AA gun, or even better, a sci-fi anti-air weapon instead.
Maybe a mod can implement my suggestions above.
Yuri still OP.

All Allied Units include Anti Air are trash. In solo 1 vs 1 or Survival map they all suck. Soviet and Yuri are much stronger.
I'd argue that Allies are a more support and tech based faction that the other two, as they rely on oddball tactics, chrono tech, and advanced but expensive units.
What Llama said. Their Anti-Air (especially naval one, forgot the name) is actually the best (although you have to manually target to get full power, I think tg has shown that in another video), and then for actual fighting, you're relying on late game power - Mirage/Prism tanks, Rocketeers, Chronos (if supers on), Battle Fortresses with Guardian GIs/Navy Seals. If it's a slower map, Allied have great chances to win
