Julian A. A. Young evidence? I know of plenty who benefitted from affirmative action, as well as the wider implication of being role models for disadvantaged people.
Mark B I don’t remember where the stat is (I promise I’ll send it as soon as I find it, shouldn’t take too long though) but they saw a large amount of African American drop outs in colleges and universities because the added points to the SAT put them in a spot where they qualified to pass and had to dropout because of the expectations
This video is incredibly biased and wildly inaccurate. Obviously there is a heavy bias to the strange American use of political terms, in which most words mean their opposites.
In my long life I have noticed that most are totally confused about political ideology. So you get both "conservatives" and "liberals" who don't actually understand their OWN ideology...much less the opposing ideology.
@@thomasjamison2050 I think that politics has a lot to do with ideology as well. People have strong pride in their values and ideology contains those values.
I seem to be an economic conservative and closer to the mid-line on social issues. I wish those further on the left would understand that conservatives shouldn't be painted with a broad brush. I think more and more conservatives are moving toward the middle. Of course the loudest voices always come from the fringe. You aren't all socialists and we aren't all bigots. Let's try to respect the spectrum in both groups.
I agree with you to a point. There is a LOT of good on both sides. BUT, just like a election with many parties ends up with a winner who pleases only a few.... to gather together helps the voting public focus on candidates and concepts that will please more of the population and get things done. Washington has enough trouble getting work done with the factions it has. Had everyone be out for their own without flag ships NOTHING would get done. - oh wait... only the aims of the richest by those willing to sell their votes.
That's where Centrism comes in but very hard to pull of correctly. A lot of people claim to be Centrist and they are not as they show much biased towards one side
A 2020 update to the video: "Social Conservatives" as defined in the video (Cause the terms have changed) have taken the name "Common-Good Conservatives", A social conservative now is simply someone who holds to tradional cultural ideals, not one that believe's in federal enforcement of those values.
I usually find myself being someone what liberal, but I thought for a long time that it was because I didn't know much about Conservatives. I completely agree, it has been impossible to find non biased videos about this. I'm not sure how I stand now, but I agree with your comment!
+Aaron S Sorry that you have difficulty with history/reality in regard to the failed conservative ideology . Possibly you have been reading or listening to the radicals which can be found on both sides of the isle. Bottom line here is that conservatism has never been a success in any country of the world at any time. The 30 + yrs since the election of Reagan clearly has proven that the trickle down economics thinking of the right where they claim " a rising tide lifts all boats" has proven to be a failure yet they still attempt to sell such thinking to the small minded. In that 30+ yr. period conservatives got exactly what they claimed was best when the wealthy saw a 275% increase of income verses 40% for the middle class. The result was not a rising tide lifting all boats but instead a worse economy. Such thinking by conservatives goes against what any economist without a political agenda well tell us which is that the middle class, not the wealthy, buy the vast majority of goods and services and anything that takes from the middle class hurts the economy. Consider what happened in Europe when in a knee jerk decision resulting from the financial crisis caused by what even conservative Al Greenspan admitted was the result of "flawed conservative ideology". Many European countries cut social programs that took from the middle class and the result was double/triple dip recession. Conservatives in the U.S. attempted to double down on the problems they caused by cutting social programs citing the same study as Europe for proof. Paul Ryan among others cited the study at every opportunity until is was later proven wrong by a grad school student now they no longer want to talk about the study. If conservatives had their way we would have suffered the same double /triple dip recession as Europe. The flawed conservative ideology conservative Al Greenspan spoke of was in regard to OTC Derivatives which were the leading cause of the financial crisis. 10 yrs prior B. Born of the Clinton Administration warned congress that if conservative ideology prevailed and OTC derivatives remained unregulated a financial crisis would result. Since at the time $ was being made until it wasn't Greenspan and cronies convinced congress Born was wrong and that conservative failure cost the U.S. economy 20+ trillion dollars not to mention what it did to the world economy. And still even today conservatives embrace the same policies that caused the problem. Conservatives continuously push for tax breaks for wealthy so called job providers yet when such people get tax breaks it doesn't translate to jobs. The reason is quite simple because the wealthy are not the job providers. The consumers are the real job providers. History clearly shows the economy prospered when the top marginal tax rate for the wealthy was 90%. The reason was not because of the high taxes but that the middle class were doing well at the time. As previously mentioned the middle class buys the vast majority of goods and services. Even if your job is making corporate jets for the Walton family which owns Walmart or for the CEO of GM in both instances most of the companies products are sold to the middle class not the wealthy. Warren Buffett and Mitt Romney are not buying the vast majority of cheap plastic junk and Fruit of the Loom undies from Walmart and GM sells far more pickup trucks and cars to the masses than Cadillacs to Mitt Romney . Ronald Reagan tripled our debt , Dubya double it again and if you understand how government pays its bills you should realize that the debt under Obama was the result of the financial crisis caused by "flawed conservative ideology "where less revenue came in to pay the bills and as a result $ had to be borrowed to make up the difference. The financial crisis came BEFORE Obama was elected. Obama had less new spending than any president in recent history. Conservatives claim Obama does not go by the constitution but cannot supply specifics. They claim his executive orders are excessive yet he has issued fewer than any president since Grover Cleveland who left office in the 1890's. They claim Hillary is to blame for what happened in Benghazi but after 1 independent investigation and 7 or 8 investigations by conservative all they have to show is millions of dollars in costs and you and I got the bill $. During the Clinton yrs conservatives wasted 70 million dollars on White Water and found NOTHING ! You and I paid for that as well. How about the 50 + million dollars wasted on congress voting to repeal O Care or the 24 Billion dollars lost when conservatives shut down the government when they were holding no cards and proved they don't know how the legislation they are responsible for works. Why did they not realize that after O Care became law O could not have repealed it even if he wanted ? They looked like fools and attempted to turn attention to a poor roll out of O Care which later met ALL of its goals. Bottom line here is that most of you haven't a clue as to what REALLY caused the financial crisis, don't understand that social programs do not equal communism and support a conservative party that doesn't support you or what is best for our country. Conservatives would not vote against the billions of dollars given to big oil each year and really have no problem with entitlements which was proven by their passage of Medicare Prescript Part D in 2003 by a conservative house/senate and signed by a conservative president Dubya. Obviously that entitlement was a gift to big pharma costing you and I a trillion dollars. The conservative architect of the plan was rewarded for that gift by big pharma with a very lucrative job and quit politics. Wake up and stop being part to the problem. Ignorance is the enemy of democracy and the small minded conservatives have ignorance in spades.
wiki seems to disagree''Classical liberalism is a political ideology and a branch of liberalism which advocates civil liberties and political freedom ''
I used to identify as a liberal, now as more conservative. I don't fear intellectualism, there is a huge bias towards those of us who hold our faith however to automatically call us bigots. I am an intellectual. I'm just able to rationalize my religion and belief in science simultaneously. People in general often feel things are black or white.
Is conservatism about no change at all to the system, cause sometimes some social change are needed, or a revolution like the American one, right? Cause I like having your limits and values, but also want fast change if crucial.
+Olivia Harrison no social programs help people get equal outcome. Like if a guy works hard his whole life to get a job that nets him 200k a year the gov shouldn't take his cash to give to a lazy person that slept their way through high school and works at McDonald's. But conservatives are for common core which even though it hasn't done well it gives everybody equal education and what you make of it is on you
Conservatives think they believe in equal opportunity not knowing that everyone doesn't have the same starting points. Liberals believe we should all have some sort of an ok starting point and after that you do what you have to do. Conservatives believe everyone that's born has the same opportunities as everyone else when that's demonstrably false.
+ryacus no smart guy. Conservative republican nominated president Ronald Reagan started the war on drugs and then heavily policed urban areas to target and demonize minorities hippies that were liberal. We already knew this and have been saying it for years but only recently have one of Reagans top men came out and admitted it. With the government taking away union jobs that many black people had and outsourcing them over seas the black people began looking for other means to provide which happened to be drugs, but then we were demonized and jailed because of it. This forced women to be single parents, they needed help due to a corrupt system that the Conservative party was so proud of.
@@traceyrice4978 that’s a stupid concept. If libertarianism is about being as individualistic as possible and socialism is about everybody functioning a equal society how can you be a libertarian socialist?? Idiots just put words together that don’t really mean anything.
Conservatives also acknowledge, or focus on, the idea that human beings have a capacity to do evil. This is why Conservatives are weary about change in the Government, the movements of so-called "science" and teachings of atheism that is ever-so-present in today's society. It's not that Conservatives fear knowledge, nor do some doubt their social values, but rather, it can be argued that Conservatives value the foundational values of the Law. They value and encourage being anchored to a moral compass, instead of the movement away from the Law towards defining for ourselves what is "evil and good". I myself, if it hasn't already been apparent, am a Conservative. I see the values of some Conservatism (perhaps, not all) as the recognition that mankind can and does do evil things, and the removal of society's tie to a moral foundation can lead to an immoral, self-righteous (meaning people who see and define themselves as right and faultless by their own efforts) society in which, due to the lack in morality, can lead to devastation and most likely poverty.
I'm an atheist, and I'm intrigued by what you mean by "so called 'science'". To be clear, I'm not here to argue, I'm simply here to answer questions if you have any, and maybe ask a few of my own.
+Victoria Joy "Teachings of atheism" what does that mean? If you don't believe in a god(s) then you are an atheist. That's it. There are liberal atheist, conservative atheist, whatever. Learning more about science and the workings of the universe can lead a person to be an atheist, but teaching science is not teaching atheism. Also, what is "So called" science?
Conservatives believes in Family Values and are against Abortion. Conservatives cherish Life. Conservatives believes in the Constitution and believes that America was founded in Christian principles by our founding fathers. Conservatives honors the American flag and the brave men and women who have died for our freedoms. Conservatives are hard working Americans who works hard for their families.
Question: What do you call a person who believes that the government has a major role in promoting and preserving ethics? That is, ethics in business and in social issues, independent of religious or cultural influences? With "wrong" being parasitic activity that causes dependence/vulnerability and "right" being activity that creates independence/self reliance and offers protection.
+JackCrafty A liberal socialist, because in this case, the government is controlling and regulating the economy with the intention of providing opportunities of independence and protection to everyone. Fascism happens when a government ditctates the lives of its citizens, what they should think, what they can do, what they can say, what religion they can follow, so on and so forth, it's not really about control or regulation of the economy, one can be a fascist/authoritarian and a socialist or capitalist.
I think that Conservatives would agree 100% with this description. I think the libertarian and liberal videos were also 100% from the point of view of those who identify with those ideologies. Now here's a challenge for you. Can you describe Naziism in such a way that a 1930s Nazi would be 100%... that is a description without leaking any criticism into it? I'll bet you come close. As a historian you strive to be as dispassionate as you can. I've never had that constraint so I'd miss it by a mile.
Tune, I think you are right. Scary. I wonder if experiencing that scary thought would make our own belief's more circumspect? I hope Keith can do it for us. I don't want to read the whole thing.
Li🅱️erals be like “The ICE, police, and Trump are neo nazis, and if you think I’m wrong, don’t you DARE try to explain why, I will screech at you and call the same police that I consider nazis and power abusive”
Leaving societal beliefs in the hands of EACH INDIVIDUAL FIRST, is a conservative. If many individuals are allowed to believe in a societal view they may move forward in it, but there should always be an open door. This is the basis of the founding belief system. In the least amount, societal views (not law) are what change the human heart, and institute real change in the land. Liberals institute laws which bind hands, bind hearts and prevent change. For example, slavery, or sharia law is liberal. It binds peoples rights, prevents change in societal norms. Instituting law won't change the society, allowing PEOPLE INDIVIDUALLY without being FORCED into giving or believing one mindset, and to chose with TRUE LIBERTY, will allow the human soul to transcend and find it's proper way to higher societal norms. A key example of this is Jesus. He died fighting the establishment, and was not allowed to be an individual because the individual had no power due to liberal views and instituted laws. Yet Jesus stood for equal rights for all, freedom of expression, and new ideas which didn't fit.
That chart (drawn up by a libertarian, btw) has a weakness or a missing scale, in that conservatives come out being conservative (right) on the economic scale but pretty much in the center between authoritarianism and anarchy, as we believe in both liberty AND law and order. So the missing element is the social conservatism scale, the belief in morality, tradition, religion, etc. The social conservative right isn't really represented in that chart. And it really is the area in which libertarians are most like liberals.
Been a subscriber for a month now and love the work! Just one question about this series... Will you be covering geopoloticts as refference? i.e. where lets say Switzerland or the EU would be on this matrix scale.
James Kenny Thanks Hames for the sub. I am toying with the idea, I am not sure how much time I want to spend on it, honestly the intention was for AP Gov but the idea of doing an AP Comparative Gov might be fun.
Keith Hughes I learned a lot about governance by doing comparative analysis. I honestly felt like I learned more about political systems in college by studying ways other countries do things. It gives students an opportunity to break out of their indoctrinations, without feeling like they are being unpatriotic or whatever. The thing I feel like I need to point out, regarding the matrix thing, is that it is comprised of an average of the respondents positions. What I found interesting from studying other countries political systems was how much their Authoritarianism, or Libertarian, Economic liberalism, or Control, were so dependent on the particular issue. I'll give an example: There was a study done on organ donor rates in Europe. Lots of theories had been proposed that had to do with North/South religious behavior, or social conservative views. The study argued that the strongest reason for the odd pattern of organ donors was whether the country used an opt-in, or opt-out approach. It had so much more to do with seemingly innocuous policy than any of this political spectrum stuff. So to try and close out before I ramble on too much. Where would The Netherlands fall? Is it a conservative country, or liberal? I think there is a lot to learn by looking at other countries as a way to look at the U.S. Sorry, I was a bit all over the place there...........I agree talk about Europe! Have you done a video on the history of the various Federal Banks?
I just want to say you are AMAZING! I am in college, majoring in mathematical education. I have watched ALL of your history videos for my history class and even now these videos for my philosophy class. You are so passionate and you reach out to me in a way my textbooks don't. You make learning fun and I am passing my classes with A's because of your videos. If I am one day at least half the teacher you are! Keep doing what you are doing. You are helping so many people!
I took the test. I wound up 0.5 to the right and 2.14 to the top. Can't say that I'm surprised at all. Enjoyed the videos on the ideologies of Libertarian ism, Liberalism, and Conservatism. I've subscribed and will check out more of your presentations.
ytsur8599 Conservatives should learn that their system have nothing to do with progress, and everything to do with giving up social liberties and rejecting compassion.
I appreciate your segments. it's nice to see political ideology explained in an objective academic approach without all the rhetoric that saturates so many political arguments.
Useful in clouding the water. Sadly his understanding and teachings are not unbiased and correct. The lazy want all the social programs until they get forced to pay for them, then they say hey, that’s not fair! I’m working harder than so and so! Conservatives are not interested in government control. They want less of it. They want only laws that pertain to everyone. No special interest groups. Special interest group laws should be down the chain in the State laws. They are not against cultures and intellectuals. They just don’t want to support division. A unified general keep it simple form of law. The problems we all suffer from now is all the special interest peoples grabbing at funding that doesn’t benefit all.
Constitutional conservative here and I'm an atheist. People think everyone that is "conservative" is religious and it's just not so and actually the idea of an atheist claiming to be conservative could empower the movement in the sense of embracing Free thinkers. That's the main thing I hear from people when you mention conservativism, they automatically think your a Christian or practice some religion in general and it's just not so!
Fiscal conservative here. Vehemently distrust Christian influences in politics and law of the land. I do believe in God, just not Christian. I support first amendment to its full extend. Will vote democrat though I do not agree with all of their policies. But I will vote anything not to let this country become an Iran of the Western hemisphere
I love your videos, Keith, and find them quite valuable for both introspection and discussions/debates with my friends. However, I have to note that when you put music on, the volume spikes considerably. It is irritating to try and watch your videos at work and have to constantly fiddle with the volume. Just a minor criticism, but I believe your work has tremendous value and encourage you to keep it up!
This is just a question from an 18 year old trying to learn more about politics before I vote: Why do I see racism usually coming from the right side of the spectrum more than the left? And is it true that a lot of right-sided people have implicit biases towards minority groups based on a few people that they see and what they see on social media and the news from that specific minority group? Once again take it easy I’m just trying to educate myself, it seems like a lot of hate and prejudices come from the right side more than the left.
Keith, I disagree with your characterization of Conservatives as closer to authoritarianism than liberals. In my view, both groups wish to use government power to reorder the social landscape to fit their worldview. Is not Obama using government power to promote his ideaology with executive orders at the institutions of the federal government and beyond? I would view Obama as at least as authoritarian as Bush. Religion is not a special class of belief that pushes one toward authoritarianism, and in fact, as the left have instilled themselves as "The party of Government" i.e., public government unions / employees and government dependents being their primary constituencies, I would suggest to you that modern liberals are actually closer to authoritarianism the modern conservatives. Modern conservatives want to reduce the size, power and scope of the US government. Modern so called "liberals" want to increase it the size, power and scope of government and use it to recast society according to their idealogy. ..
I agree that this is an unbiased and really good lesson. However, my understanding of what a Conservatism is includes tangible assets as well as ideology. Conservatives actually poses something of equity to conserve. There exist a distinction between Republicans and Conservatives. A Republican uphold values, principles and ideology of privatization, or independence from government control. However, Conservatives may embrace the same ideology, yet Conservatives actuality poses something to conserve. The Conservatives are typically of families who have benefited from both or either the Head-Right Program or the Homestead Act. Conservatives typically continue to receive benefits from tax right-offs and interest from stock investments. The hole point of being a conservative is to conserve these benefits bestowed by government. The agenda is to build a legacy of wealth and prosperity that grows exponentially over time; and this equity may be passed down from generation to generation., to generation. A person may have Republican views, but if they have no assets, what is it that they are conserving?
This looks plagiarized. How about something quick and to the point. Concervatives don't believe in individual freedom. Concervatives believe in religious values or traditional values. They don't believe in live and let live, always dictating to people about how they should live thier lives. Now that's the real definition of a concervative.
This is why I never got the "duality" between conservativism and liberalism that we often see framed in politics, at least here in America. If anything progressivism (or social justice progressivism) seems more like a proper antithesis to conservatism, with each focusing more on advocating for some form of government involvement to uphold shared ideologies and values. I think libertarianism is a better parallel to liberalism, as both put more emphasis on freedom over cultural ideas, even if their methods of obtaining it are different.
Not true , almost no liberals these days , that actually play a huge role in politics do support the free market , in fact they are constantly regulating it.
True , but the liberalism you are talking about shifted over to the term ''Libertarianism'' . By todays 52% of people identifying as liberals support socialism.
I took the test and I am apparently a left-leaning Libertarian. More specifically, here are my numbers on the graph. Economic Left/Right: -3.5 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.92.
Hydro_ XPatriotX Do you even know what system they use in Europe (which is a Continent, not a fucking country). What they use there would be liberalism here. The left here is not the left there. Just like Conservationism is not like it is there or even Canada. The Republican Right in the US is 100x more right than the right in Europe. Their Conservatives would be considered liberals. Liberalism, based on the location, is very different. Europe is a very progressive area. Some of their best nations are eve socialist. And look at classical American Liberalism. That does work and is in synch with working political ideologies in Europe. US Liberal =/=/ European Liberal
I am a social conservative, and believe STRONGLY in states rights. I believe that states should be a kind of mini nation in a sense, hence "The United STATES of America". So if a state wants to pass religious laws ok great as long as the governed support it and it's not something crazy like human sacrifice or something of the manner, like it was pre late 60's and 70's and 80's. Furthermore, but I do not believe in a across the map blanket establishment of religion though. Because that would be majoritarianism. So in my opinion, I would abolish the circuit courts. And severely limit the supreme courts. Because I hate hate HATE judicial tyranny. A few deciding for millions.
When one opens the Gate for Government to Control in areas of Morality Subjects, it opens to that which can eliminate those subjects held near and dear by Conservatives, like Religion. That could mean dictating what Religions are acceptable and if any are. There are legal options for Prayer in School, Religious Private Schools. ..and if prayer is allowed in schools, it means all Religions - not just Southern Baptists.
Special Thanks to Mr. Hughes, With this Non-Biased Video on the Conservative Ideology(Both Social and Economical), and their roots and importance in our American Culture and Society. It is important to recognize and acknowledge, preserve these values and traditions, BUT NEVER at the expense of another American's pursuit of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness, His,Her and/or Their' ability to reproduce "efficiently", and without fear and degradation, or "EXPLOITATION"! #Balance
1:39 second's in i already want all those group's to come to the center point in this graph keep it dead center in the middle why not have it that way? Lol
I am a Christian and a libertarian because although I am extremely socially conservative, I don't believe it is the role of the government to punish victimless crimes (hurting themselves) which are vices I might even view as sins.
8:08 that's the very intellectualism which birthed the DOI and was abhorred by British loyalists during the American Revolution. Interesting to think about.
I'm a left social libertarian. I've always been skeptical of the government ( and a higher power. like an all powerful god) but I do believe everyone is entitled to life and liberty but not when people are suffering under that very same liberty.
I'm a voluntaryist/libertarian/anarcho-capitalist. Use whatever word you want. Your definition of libertarianism and anarchism is pretty much spot on and un-biased, just note that not all libertarians are minarchists, some are so libertarian that libertarianism and anarchism become synonymous to them. Although this does not mean we want control over the means of production as the anarchist movement has historically desired, it's a new branch of anarchism.
Say you had the power to implement a voluntarist/libertarian/anarcho-capitalist society in the United States. What would that society look like in the modern world.
***** We are trying to do that at the moment. freestateproject.org/ Hopefully we can turn New Hampshire into something like. fee.org/anythingpeaceful/detail/how-policing-works-in-a-privatized-city but it'll never be 100% voluntaryist due to the federal level. In theory, we would be 1.4-1.8x more wealthy due to the tax money that we would retain. In a 100% voluntaryist society there would be a heck of a lot of business competition, intellectual property would mean nothing apart from NDA agreements which would allow for much more innovation. Capitalism would fulfill it's true potential in developing new technologies and bringing about a better way of life for consumers. Walking down a street you could see all kinds of houses and buildings due to no centralized building regulations, maybe even some of those earthships. Insurance companies would take a much more active role in prevention to avoid costly conflict and would be involved in a lot more industries such as childcare and dispute resolution. Anything you want could be ordered online, drugs, guns, you name it. It would be so different in almost every way that to a statist, it would feel totally alien.
PLEASE put your vocal volume the same as the music volume. I have to turn it ALLLLLLLLL the way down every time the music comes on. thanks for the info, pal
“But what is liberty without wisdom and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint. Those who know what virtuous liberty is, cannot bear to see it disgraced by incapable heads, on account of their having high-sounding words in their mouths.” Edmund Burke
+Deadly Meep Oh okay I would be a leftist then but what I wanted to know is why am I so far to the "Libertarian" side on the political compass web site but not considered a Libertarian? Or put another way; why can only those on the right be considered Libertarian while being a leftist is taken as being Authoritarian even though I'm far closer to Libertarian on the compass? Are you sure that rightists don't just 'tend' to also be libertarians while leftists do not? It was my understanding that you could be liberal and a libertarian.
+Deadly Meep "I'm guessing you want the government to regulate businesses more but not to control people's lives as much" Yep that sounds like me :) You were right about me in the first comment except for the opposing personal freedom part. I'm pro choice, for gay marriage and pretty much for anything that doesn't hurt other people or infringe on their rights. But I do think that businesses have a prerogative to take actions that benefit their company above others' well being and the world at large and that government is needed to prevent unethical business practices and to prevent things like anticompetitive monopolization, so that businesses don't make the rules that smaller competing businesses have to play by.
Women could always vote. Of they owned property. Men couldn't vote of they didn't own property. The only stipulation was that you owned property. Thats it. Nowadays men who refuse the drat cannot vote and get thrown in prison eventually. So it's still a problem. For men.
And you all should have learned all this by the 7th grade! All I hear from people is, “ i’m not interested in politics!” Well you better get interested in politics because politics is interested in you! How can you not pay attention to the one thing that rules your every day life? It’s your duty as a citizen or a civilian to know your rights and to know the law! Keeps you from making a fool of yourself!
Hey Keith, just started watching your vids the other day. I'm sure you get all types of responses but, generally speaking, well done. It's certainly a good starting point that you've framed for these topics. :) Yo!
I'm under the impression that "liberal" vs. "conservative" generally regards a stance towards government; should governmental intervention be applied liberally or conservatively? The same spectrum can be applied towards anything: do you agree with living and letting live, or do you prefer to enforce your ideals upon the world? Something that confuses me is how "conservatives" tend to be liberal with telling other people how to live and "liberals" tend to more accepting of people who don't conform to the norm....I would expect it to be the other way around, with "conservatives" accepting gay marriage/drug legalization/personal freedoms/etc and "liberals" being proponents of proscribing whatever is deemed socially unacceptable. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.
The way I see it, the problem with conservatism is its desire not to allow change, or to change things slowly, is basically about self interest, in that the "current order" benefits conservatives, especially white conservatives, and oppresses many other people. I see some "conservative values" as being things like slavery, racism, discrimination against women and children, wealth supremacy (a superset of white supremacy), discrimination against those who are "different", like LGBTQ+ persons.
Im a libertarian, very much a classical liberal. I support reason, individualism, economic non-intervention, and social freedom. Any more questions? Am I being detained?
I'm a social libertarian. This makes both the democratic and republican parties problematic as they both wish to limit my individual liberties in some way. I have to choose which individual liberties are most important when going to the poles.
Maybe it's not worth going to the polls at all. Who ever the banks want to win will win. Voter fraud and campaign donations are their tools to control elections.
***** You are constantly being told to vote in America. What they don't tell you is that if you never register to vote you will not have to deal with jury duty as they select people from the registered voters list. I have been called three times. Fuck that shit.
Like Natan Schransky I am attracted to the neo-Conservative view that good governance is promoted (and hence peace) by spreading western values and democracy. Iraqis were willing to risk their lives for the privilege of voting.
Most academics would be on the left and they know that government and the private sector working together creates the best outcomes. The private sector does work well by itself but even better with government intervention.
I have taken that test and I have noticed it is slightly biased towards liberalism. I was able to see through some of the loaded questions but my mom and my friends didn't realize that certain questions were misleading like, "From each according to his ability and to each according to his needs is a fundamentally good idea. (agree or disagree on a 1 to 5 scale)". On the surface it sounds like a good idea right? If you think about it though it is saying you shouldn't get paid for what your job is worth but get paid based on what you need and no more. It says that even if you don't work at all you will get paid. It also says if you work at a job that would pay lots of money you only get what you need and no more. It also doesn't say that that is the fundamental principle of communism.
Informative and unbiased.

@@thomasjamison2050 I think that politics has a lot to do with ideology as well. People have strong pride in their values and ideology contains those values.
I seem to be an economic conservative and closer to the mid-line on social issues.

A 2020 update to the video: "Social Conservatives" as defined in the video (Cause the terms have changed) have taken the name "Common-Good Conservatives", A social conservative now is simply someone who holds to tradional cultural ideals, not one that believe's in federal enforcement of those values.

+Landon Wright most conservatives seem to hate social programs that would help people get equal opportunities
+Olivia Harrison no social programs help people get equal outcome. Like if a guy works hard his whole life to get a job that nets him 200k a year the gov shouldn't take his cash to give to a lazy person that slept their way through high school and works at McDonald's. But conservatives are for common core which even though it hasn't done well it gives everybody equal education and what you make of it is on you
+Olivia Harrison Why should someone who is successful have to pay for these social programs? Just because you say so?

+JackCrafty A Fascist
+JackCrafty Pretty sure that's authoritarian.

This is a really good point. I knew something was missing but I couldn’t put the words to it. Thank you :)

I learned a lot about governance by doing comparative analysis.

Change is scary. Hence conservatism.
Do you have a video on the Conservative Counterattack of the 1920s?
Social conservatism is dying off. Economic conservatism is starting to gain some ground though.
Love your videos! They really help with classes.
Modern so called "liberals" want to increase it the size, power and scope of government and use it to recast society according to their idealogy. ..
Sir, you are absolutely right.

Do you even know what system they use in Europe (which is a Continent, not a fucking country).

This points out the problem in politics of the world. Definitions are not shared or explained to many. Thank you Hughes for explaining.

Cool! 2 vids in a day. By the way, is the next ideology video going to be socially conservative and economically liberal?
Called a Statist
PLEASE put your vocal volume the same as the music volume. I have to turn it ALLLLLLLLL the way down every time the music comes on.
thanks for the info, pal

What is someone who is economically a liberal but socially a conservative?
Awesome video Keith!
“But what is liberty without wisdom and without virtue? It is the greatest of all possible evils; for it is folly, vice, and madness, without tuition or restraint. Those who know what virtuous liberty is, cannot bear to see it disgraced by incapable heads, on account of their having high-sounding words in their mouths.”
Edmund Burke
What was that sound at 6:10 XD
I am left libertarian. economic -5.38 social - 5.18
I have a question. Why is the far right denoted "Libertarianism?"
+Deadly Meep
Oh okay I would be a leftist then but what I wanted to know is why am I so far to the "Libertarian" side on the political compass web site but not considered a Libertarian? Or put another way; why can only those on the right be considered Libertarian while being a leftist is taken as being Authoritarian even though I'm far closer to Libertarian on the compass? Are you sure that rightists don't just 'tend' to also be libertarians while leftists do not? It was my understanding that you could be liberal and a libertarian.

"I'm guessing you want the government to regulate businesses more but not to control people's lives as much"
Yep that sounds like me :)
You were right about me in the first comment except for the opposing personal freedom part. I'm pro choice, for gay marriage and pretty much for anything that doesn't hurt other people or infringe on their rights.
But I do think that businesses have a prerogative to take actions that benefit their company above others' well being and the world at large
and that government is needed to prevent unethical business practices and to prevent things like anticompetitive monopolization, so that businesses don't make the rules that smaller competing businesses have to play by.
Brilliant educational endeavor. Well done. Thank you.
Thank You for this video.
I am just becoming more interested of the various ideologies and understanding them all entirely.
Be well, Mr Hughes
This is the best video I found that explains the political compass
Is it a Liberal, or a Conservative idea women that have the right to vote since
04 June 1919, and ratified on 18 August 1920? Does anybody know?
Liberal. Racism, Sexism...all conservative.
Women could always vote. Of they owned property. Men couldn't vote of they didn't own property. The only stipulation was that you owned property. Thats it.
Nowadays men who refuse the drat cannot vote and get thrown in prison eventually. So it's still a problem. For men.
Done Never fuck off buddy
La Belle Vie definitely not conservative.
No, I did vote for Justin Trudeau on
19 October 2015.My riding is Quebec...He is our PM of Canada.
Thank you very much..
What was that noise in the middle of the video
And you all should have learned all this by the 7th grade!
All I hear from people is, “ i’m not interested in politics!”
Well you better get interested in politics because politics is interested in you!
Yo!
Conservatism is easy to explain. Liberals look to Washington for answers. Conservatives look in the mirror.
Conservative look to states rights
Im a libertarian, very much a classical liberal. I support reason, individualism, economic non-intervention, and social freedom. Any more questions? Am I being detained?
I'm a social libertarian. This makes both the democratic and republican parties problematic as they both wish to limit my individual liberties in some way. I have to choose which individual liberties are most important when going to the poles.
Bob Breckur that is a huge problem with the two party system
Maybe it's not worth going to the polls at all. Who ever the banks want to win will win. Voter fraud and campaign donations are their tools to control elections.
***** You are constantly being told to vote in America. What they don't tell you is that if you never register to vote you will not have to deal with jury duty as they select people from the registered voters list. I have been called three times. Fuck that shit.

Like Natan Schransky I am attracted to the neo-Conservative view that good governance is promoted (and hence peace) by spreading western values and democracy. Iraqis were willing to risk their lives for the privilege of voting.
Agreed, I don’t sense bias in his videos either. It’s the reason I watch him. Thank you HipH. Mr beat , well that’s a different story
I AM FOR VERY CAUTIOUS , LIMITED SOCIAL CONSERVATIVISM .
Most academics would be on the left and they know that government and the private sector working together creates the best outcomes. The private sector does work well by itself but even better with government intervention.
at 2:41 Conservativism?
If an idea doesn't work then can it be considered a good idea?
This is what I got:

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.03

Dr. Hughes, and Khan academy should take over how the schools in America are run. The two best educational channels on UA-cam !
