  • Conservative Philosophy is a very polarizing and hot topic in today's political landscape. Due to people like Donald Trump, numerous hate groups such as the KKK, and Fox News this philosophy has earned a bad reputation. But is its perception warranted or is it a mire misunderstanding? That's what this videos all about, so I hope you guys enjoy it!

I'm here trying to understand conservatives for the sake of friendships in my life. I thought this was going to be conservatives are amazing and everybody else sucks. Thank you for being objective. Integrity is a thing. I truly believe that my political opponent is not my enemy. However that seems to be the only way to learn about the other parties is to either accept that you're deplorable or they are.

Every single conservative IS a garbage person, for as long as they VOTE for white nationalists and actual nazis. Conservatism is rooted in religion. Many conservatives claim to adhere to the bible as the basis for morality. The bible advocates for slavery, genocide, sexism, racism, and the ostracism of the other. Conservatism attempts to claim our universal humanism as it's own distinct trait. When laid out in a linear structure, the distinctions of conservatism you are left with are markedly similar to the tenets of their personal religious belief. Conservatives are monolithic because their isn't a large pool of conservative thought, because conservatism is rooted in religion. Conservatives are taught lies about their nature. Galileo made it clear, there is no use for a "god" concept in any equation.

@@davidlee4903 I am a Conservative. I used to go to church and don't anymore. We have Gay Conservatives. We tend to let our women speak up more often than not. Only the most extreme ones among us would even consider slavery acceptable - although admittedly, the submission / obedience issue is a legit problem in more abusive religious circles. I came from that background, so I concede that there is some truth to what you are saying. I'm just here to say that Conservatism is more diverse than the way you portray it. As for the ostracism, a family in my first Progressive community shunned me when I was a child. They seemed to have misinterpreted a kind gesture as a sign of mental illness on my end, so the mom didn't want me to play with her kids - although she let my mom know that my sister could go over to their place. Other Progressives have insinuated that they hope I die of Covid. They have also talked trash about me and used a threat of shunning to intimidate me in our community, because they didn't agree with me. So, when you talk about ostracism and the like, um, I've personally experienced that from Progressives, not Conservatives (as far as I know). That's not to say that it doesn't happen. It does, sometimes; but my point is that it's more a matter of how strongly-entrenched someone's beliefs are - regardless as to their politics or religion. What I mean is that dispensation of existence is a potential sign of thought reform, according to Progressive psychiatrist Dr. Robert Lifton. I haven't yet finished his book "Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism: A Study of 'Brainwashing' in China" (originally published in 1961), but I read chapters 1-21 and skimmed the rest of the book. To be clear, Dr. Lifton did at least an informal psychoanalysis on Trump and his followers, and - as I recall - determined that there was some pathology present. You see, Conservatives like me are not opposed to learning from others at times. For me, that has meant considering perspectives including Vox, The Atlantic, Salon, The New York Times and several other Left-leaning publications. Have you done the same, with regards to Conservative publications? One of my personal favorites isn't Conservative per se, but more Conservative-Libertarian: Reason. I also like hearing from Black intellectuals and similar voices, such as Dr. Glenn Loury, Dr. John McWhorter, Coleman Hughes and Jason Riley.

I should clarify: I don't go to church right now; but I do believe in God. But, I also would rather leave you alone. I believe that if you want to believe in Jesus, that you can start reading the Bible or go to church to learn more, if that's something you want to do.

@@davidlee4903 I used to think like you.
Hell, the only reason why I thought I was more left-leaning was solely because of the bullshit Trump supporters (truly “cuntservatives”, as I like to label them as) give to people who think like you every day since Trump’s run, nomination, and eventual win.
I thought I was a liberal solely because of pity for you.
However, the more I delved into your particular ideology, the more I realized: yes, we actually *do need* laws and regulations, as well as the overall civil rights of it’s people.
It was then that I considered myself more center-left: yes, civil rights for all is a good thing, *but*, again, we need to temper that with structure and discipline, otherwise, yes, it *would* become chaos.
HOWEVER, conservatism these days has truly become toxic: instead of logical and rational thinking that benefits society as a whole, instead it is just pure vitriol and cruelty, just for the sake of “law and order” (in which the hypocrisy of cuntservatives is evident on January 6th, especially when they constantly bitch about lioting and rooting all the time).
My point is, we need a healthy balance of both, or maybe perhaps more leaning on the liberal side, these days.

It's interesting that my moral upbringing in the area of things like sexuality were very conservative leaning. However, the sense of fairness for minorities that was also instilled in me is quite liberal leaning. And of course personality traits effect my views and feelings. I think most of us have some of both conservative and liberal in our hearts. However, human nature wants to be "right". We then tend to band together with others who agree with our ideas of being "right".

      @2:22 "free enterprise"
@3:46 "insure the freedom of individuals"
now this where it goes ignorant.
@3:53. replace the word "authoritarianism" with "totalitarianism".
"Author" is the root word in "authoritarian". as in a author of a plan. a party with a plan. and conservatism is against a plan. to block the Left's plan.
Opposite of a plan is deregulations.
Free enterprise with no plan. no regulations.
Now the definition of Liberal is Liberal freedom except when infringes on other people's freedom. Rules. regulations. so it doesn't infringe on other people's freedom. opposite of free enterprise.
For example, free market, as long as worker's rights are not infringed on. so the working-class's rights are not infringed on by the free (no rules) market.

But since then I've realized that I don't really apply the same expectations that I wish conservatives would to myself and that is to question what you're usually consuming. So I've been more cautious of what I've been consuming and since then found middle ground between the two political philosophies. Its been generally eye opening. How to be conservative:
    1. Pick a problem in society
    2. Instead of seeking a solution, point to the problems with the people trying to solve the problem
    3. Scream out to world "look at these peoples problems!"
    4. Use that to justify doing NOTHING about the original problem in society
    5. *bonus* use this logic to justify supporting the people actually making the problem worse!
    Did I get this right?

Very well explained. I needed to understand why my views seem so radically different from those I love . I know they’re good people so what gives ?? Lol. The video makes a lot of sense . I’ve always been one to not really know for sure what side I fall on. I’m just for what works for the time being . I’ve been pushed more to one side of the spectrum than the other though due to what seemed like a lack of empathy and ( like you said in the video) they seemed very selfish and “all about me no matter the suffering of others” Now I see that they are simply too concerned about how bad things will be for all if these tried and kinda’ true?? Systems that we have in place are challenged. ) After watching this video I think I’ve always been slightly liberal , although still near the center line , just within reason . I do believe that we need a balance between of both sides to make things work . I sometimes agree with conservatives and I sometimes agree with liberals . So I have to ask are these labels just two different forms of being too extreme , only in different ways and causing different problems depending on the view ?

Holding some beliefs consistent with one side, and some with the others would leave one either a Centrist or a Libertarian. Any choice is fine. The main issue is that I think that we do well to have civil discourse and do our best not to become too extreme in our views, because the more extreme our views become, the more likely we'll hurt some people.

Pro life people (at least the sane ones - who are the majority) do not deny the personhood of pregnant women. They simply recognize that every pregnancy involves not just ONE person but TWO. It is pro abortion people who outright deny the personhood of one party.
Let's be honest. This total denial of the personhood of babies is not based on any scientific argument. It's simply based on the fact that some people find it "inconvenient" to recognize that personhood.
Under the constitution, it is entirely reasonable to believe some right to abortion must exist. But to base our laws on a total denial of the personhood of one individual is irrational at best. And to regard such a blatant denial of personhood as the "morally superior" view - while casting false accusations at OTHERS of denying a personhood - requires a rather impressive level of self-delusional hypocrisy.

My only gripe would be continental conservatism tends to be far less libertarian market based & capitalistic - we’re generally less individualistic too, believing in community & social responsibility. Those divergences I think are largely cultural however as we view America as often too materialistic. Hegel is a good philosopher for it over here.

As someone who has read Burke and those who followed him like Russell Kirk, I strongly disagree with your second point. They taught that society isn’t the sum of atomized individuals like liberalism(including libertarianism) teaches. Rather it’s individuals existing in relationships to their families, to their communities and from a religious point of view to God. That’s why conservatives are against the view of liberty held by Locke and Mill. But as to the argument you make as crime being the fault of the individual, that is correct but not because conservatives don’t believe society exists but rather humans by nature are prone to act on impulse and selfish passions and thus need to have restraint

Not sure why this is so difficult for both the left and the right to understand. The individual is the fundamental unit of society, the building block, if you will, and society is the structure formed by amassing enough units together to the betterment of all. The foundational, philosophical differences of the left and right act as countermeasures to the more aggressive/regressive aspects of the other serving as a self regulating system to ensure that the appropriate changes necessary to evolve and adapt to requisite changes in society occur in controlled manner so that society doesn't erupt into chaos and so that stagnation doesn't give way to the social rot of rigid, unchanging blind adherence to ideas that have been shown to be antiquated or inappropriate for the times. Thanks for making the video. I hope more videos lime these are viewed by more people so that we can at least attempt to have some understanding of the position and reasoning of those with who we disagree politically.

Sure we need to have structure, but they fail to see that change is always happening and in most instances those changes are better for all people. Sure the ways of the past served the populous well in it's time. Though the newer changes work best for the current society. Cling to the bedrock of the past, but not so tightly you fail to see that they no longer serve the majority of our current society. We record history in order to not repeat societies mistakes in the past. Without change we will not evolve as a whole.

Probably super late to comment on this but.... as a conservative, this was refreshing. Although, I would not go as far as to say that liberals should be compared to American revolutionaries, I don't think that those ideologies match up. I definitely can't picture the liberal men of America fighting for freedom. And the problem with bringing up slaves and people who lived in concentration camps, those are definitely not the same type of people that are living in America today who have those ideals and are pushing for "change". The poorest person in America is still living better than a wealthy person 100 years ago and the entitlement of people these days to act like they are oppressed in the same manner is just crazy to me. I'm pretty sure people in North Korea are trading children to different families so that they don't have to eat their own children, that's oppression. Modern claims of oppression in America are what makes it hard for me to respect modern leftist ideologies and the person who believes them.

Nice video. My thoughts on the resistance to change criticism... I can only speak on behalf of my personal beliefs (I am a Conservative), but I am smart enough to understand that revolutions throughout history are inevitable and necessary. François-René de Chateaubriand in 1818 used "Conservative" in his own context and so I don't believe his personal resistance to revolutionary change is a good blanket for how every modern American conservative feels. For example, I don't believe slavery is moral. If it took a revolution to correct that wrong, I would be supportive of it. I believe in a moral right and wrong, or Universal truth of some sort (which I think is a core belief for Conservatives), so any resistance to change would be waved if it meant doing the right thing. I think a lot of conservatives would be willing to change if it meant going in a positive direction. It's the direction and means of achieving that conservatives butt heads with others on, which stifles the progress and perhaps gives the illusion of stubbornness.

Conservative here, too. I'd refine your point by saying that Progressives / Leftists have a moral code, as do we. What we view as moral differs from what Progressives view as moral, and that is why our political divide is so strong. To keep a sense of national unity, it's important to keep the laws politically-neutral. The greater the imbalance either way, the more likely the disenfranchised group - either one - will respond with some form of rebellion. As a Conservative, I've been trying to figure out how our people could respond, because a lot of American Progressive policies have been harmful to us Conservatives (in the US). I think I now know a suitable nonviolent response, although it would take cooperation among Conservatives as well as time to implement. But, if voting works for now, great. = )

It was Republicans (conservatives) that passed the 14th and 15th amendments with scattered help from a few northern democrats. Look at the vote count by each political party.
It was a conservative, President Eisenhower, who integrated the schools and pushed Congress to pass civil rights legislation. Finally, Lyndon Johnson figured out to offer welfare benefits and pass the civil rights acts because he had more control over the democrats. He guessed the giveaways would tie the recipients to the Democratic party for 200 years. See the quote attributed to him when he signed the bill. Conservatives were always and are still for equality.

If the systems in place are exploitative with the intent to consolidate wealth to those with excess, “change yourself” or “fall in line” doesn’t seem to be an adequate response to me. If a system is designed with flaws, it’s ok to adjust.
Innovation isn’t profitable, it’s risky. Competition isn’t profitable, but both are important aspects to a strong economy. Consolidation of economic power away from the individual and into the corporate space doesn’t provide strength, it induces minimalist practices, monopolization, and rampant privatization of every aspect of our lives. If we judge things based on the systems we are living in to be “natural”, despite them being socially adopted ideas, we lose sight of ideals and become complacent with ever disparaging circumstances.
As Americans, it is our duty to question our government. It is our duty to objectively look at our society and ask if our trajectory is one that we are willing to live with.

I think conservative values are simple. Individual freedom for all, not based on race, religion or gender or whatever else you may dream up, my right to freedom doesn't impose an obligation on anyone except to permit me to live my life without harm to others and supporting others same rights. Don't bother me and I don't bother you, bother meaning infringe my freedoms. Along with those freedoms comes responsibility, conservative values includes social responsibility, treat everyone the same, do not impose your beliefs on others, your own values can't impede someone else's. My/our right to protect myself, family and property means I must value the same for all others but I must be responsible for my actions with said protection (gun, knife, etc). Abortion is not supported because it imposes death on a human, a defenseless human that has the same value and rights as anyone else. I would choose to teach sexual restraint or protection, of course accidents will happen and I would prefer to choose life rather than death for that person. These are some simple examples that become political for power rather than to make society better. Conservative doesn't mean anti-progressive, it means move slowly and cautiously into the future while protecting these values for all.

The solution to the second criticism you express of conservatism is their typically strong religious backgrounds. These two are usually inseparable. Conservatives as a rule believe individuals in society acting alone or in groups should help those less fortunate or otherwise unable to help themselves. Liberals as a rule expect government to do this. That's the biggest difference. Conservatives want to do it themselves or through private groups like churches.

Honestly conservative or democratic or liberal... the groups are all hyprocritical in some way or another and they all lean one way to an extreme.. society, culture, and the world is too complicated to live with a one way mindset. I think when you create groups it divides us, so i dont like political groups anyway. I know it might seem like an easy out but i am truly and independent. I cannot fully agree with any group or agree that grouping is a good idea. I think having people together creates strengths withing the group overall. When everybody is divided not as much progress can be made because everybody is finger pointing instead of working together to solve the issues. Just imo.

I think where a lot of the modern polarization comes from is the contradictions and hypocrisy from both sides. Conservatives right now won’t hesitate to look at the history of another country and use it call as a talking point to gain momentum behind preventing change while ignoring The lessons of our own history. Another is one of their values being imperfection however they prevent small changes under the distraction that that change won’t fix everything. Not being able to fix everything about one problem has become an excuse to do nothing. These are just off the top of my head examples I can think of plenty. I can think of plenty for liberalism also but that wasn’t what this video is about

For most of history, a political conservative meant someone who believed in the idea of a ruling class, whether that class was royal/noble, such as in a monarchy/aristocracy, or in a ruling minority, such as in an oligarchy. In other words, being a political conservative meant being anti-democratic.
But conservatives ran into a problem in the late 20th century as democracy became the dominant form of government in the majority of the developed world. Suddenly, being anti-democratic became politically untenable, so conservatives had to re-brand themselves. That's why today conservatives talk, instead, about being for "freedom" and "small government" and "traditional values". This is all coded language for the traditional conservative belief in a ruling class. Conservatives _say_ they are pro-democracy, but their _actions_ say that they are still anti-democratic at their core.

You are an ignorant person who clearly doesn't know or doesn't understand what is the real meaning of conservatism, you are using the same fallacies all leftist in America use to describe what they don't like, y'all label everything into categories related to hate, "anti-rights", racist and all that stuff y'all like to say, you probably haven't read anything related to conservative philosophy, I suggest that instead of commenting and projecting pure ignorance, you should read a book that could be an introduction to the conservative thinking, it's called "How to be a conservative" by the great Sir Roger Scruton, where he approaches this subject with caution and presents the core principles of a conservative person, so as to shed some light on the subject.
These are 3 important points that I consider Scruton tries to clarify in this book.
      1) The conservative philosophy implies constructing a state from below up:
A true conservative person believes in a society built from the bottom up, from its people to their representatives. A healthy society is defined by its people and follows the will of the majority. Unfortunately, many states fail to understand and implement these principles. This was also the case of communist Czechoslovakia or even the UK under Margaret Thatcher.
The ideology of a party is not the main aspect people should focus on. Instead, the focus should be on how they plan on implementing it. Throughout history, societies have fallen prey to all sorts of regimes. As such, people have started to shift towards absolute democracy with no intention of looking back. The problem with this sudden shift is that they leave behind what’s important: their legacy, history, and values.
For this reason, conservators are trying to preserve these cultural ideas. While still being pro-development, one can also be pro-preservation of the nation’s values and principles. Moreover, without a moral compass and a history, society is easier to divide and conquer. That’s because there’s nothing to stick people together under a common purpose.
There’s no point in rushing to bring the future closer by leaving the past behind. As such, an ideal society has representatives that offer extreme care and consideration towards the families, the traditions, the history of that society, and other similar aspects. Moreover, the elected officials ought to work to preserve these. Doing so will build a better, more developed society having such implications in mind.
      2) A true conservative society is also democratic and works to keep its institutions open and accessible to all the people:
One of the many unfortunate implications of communism is the nationalization of all institutions, businesses, and all other entities. Having the idea of the greater good and a centralized administration to serve all people equally, this practice has brought people tremendous misfortune during the twentieth century. Not only is this philosophy utopic, but so much power in the hands of a few can prove to be dangerous.
Scruton learned this first-hand during his experiences in the communist states. He saw that private clubs and schools were closing due to the fact that they were providing “unfair” opportunities and access to networks to those who were privileged enough to join them. The entire approach was wrong. The solution is to make them more accessible to the masses. Thus, giving more people opportunities to seize and chances to succeed.
Moreover, by shutting them down, a state is only forcing the privileged to find loopholes to fulfill their wishes. They can still buy houses in the catchment area with great schools. This, in turn, divides people to a high extent. Therefore, allowing people to form their own societal layers and institutions is another trait of a healthy society promoted by conservators.
      3) Being a nationalist means being fond of your country, not following it blindly to mass destruction:
Nowadays, people associate the word nationalism with the atrocities of the twentieth century. And for a reason! Just think about all the destruction and harm done in the name of nationalism. A primary example is extreme antisemitism displayed in policies and practices that almost wiped all Jewish people off the earth.
However, being a nationalist used to mean something different. And that is what conservators today are aiming for today. Essentially, it is about the way one person feels about their country, the people they coexist with, and overall a family-like sentiment associated with one’s nation. If you look at the bigger picture, a nation resembles a family from many points of view.
For example, There’s a lot of fighting between parties. However, everyone will eventually look for a solution that works for the family or the nation in this matter. Similar to a family, a nation has a shared identity and the members have a sense of belongingness to their country of origin. This sentiment is hard to shake off. No matter where you go, you can’t forget your family. Because you grew up with it, just like you did with your country and its specific culture.
Perhaps this is the reason why people look for the food they grew up with even if they moved someplace else. Or anything else that can give them back that feeling of belonging. Acknowledging this shared identity is what makes a person nationalist. And this is the philosophy that conservators are trying to spread around.

Everything you've said is false and uninformed. Basically, opinions like yours are based in a logical fallacy known as "equivocation." This is when two completely different things are referred to by the same name in order to create confusion. The problem is, you're using the same word ("conservatism") to refer to two completely different belief systems - EUROPEAN conservatism and AMERICAN conservatism.
Here's an easy way to make the difference obvious. Ask yourself, historically, what were these two groups desiring to "conserve"? Did they have the same goals? or different goals? Answer: Their goals were completely different. In fact, they were literally the opposite of each other.
European conservatism is the type that favors a ruling class. Why? Because historically, Europe was entirely ruled by MONARCHIES. So the conservative factions in Europe have always tended to favor a system closer to monarchy, which values a ruling class at the expense of some equality and freedom.
American conservatism is completely the opposite. America never had a monarchy. In fact, America gained its independence by fighting a war AGAINST a monarchy!! Equality and freedom (though not always fully practiced) were core values incorporated into the founding documents of America. THOSE IDEALS of freedom and equality are what American conservatives desire to conserve. American conservatives do not - by any stretch - want a ruling class!! In fact, they're deeply opposed to any type of ruling class. This is why they're for SMALL GOVERNMENT. Does that phrase ring a bell??
If you want to honestly understand American conservatism, don't get your information from its enemies. Read books from actual American conservatives.
Note: Donald Trump is NOT a conservative and he never was. He's a populist. (And also a jackass.)

The allies vs axis was a very conservative move. Oneself has to heed the call to help the oppressed individual. A concentration camp is a concentration of oppressed individuals. The colonists realizing their own oppression and wanting to conserve the inalienable rights of men which are taught in the Bible made very conservative moves. The individual has a call to be a good neighbor to all individuals. A Christian conservative has a call to tell the gospel of Jesus Christ to all the world. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All, every individual. Conservatives are not lacking in understanding plurality or society but ultimately everyone stands alone before God. John 3:16-21, 1John1:8-10
