What the difference in brain structure between liberals and conservatives? And where do our political convictions come from: rational deliberation, or biological determinism?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    GAIL SALTZ:
Dr. Gail Saltz is a bestselling author of numerous books and the go-to expert on a variety of important psychological issues. She is Chair of the 92nd Street Y "7 Days of Genius Advisory Committee" and Consultant and Event Moderator for the Clinton Foundation's Health Matters Initiative. Dr. Saltz is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the NY Presbyterian Hospital Weill-Cornell School of medicine, a psychoanalyst with the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, and has a private practice in Manhattan.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
Gail Saltz: So I think what’s really fascinating is that there have been a number of recent studies looking at brain structural differences between liberals and conservatives. And what’s been found in several studies is that liberals tend to have a larger anterior cingulate gyrus. That is an area that is responsible for taking in new information and that impact of the new information on decision making or choices. Conservatives tended on the whole to have a larger right amygdala. Amygdala being a deeper brain structure that processes more emotional information - specifically fear based information. So it’s really responsible for the flight or fright response. And this isn’t everybody. It’s not black and white and of course then, you know, what about all of the people in the middle? But basically the study showed that if you just based it on brain structural size different you could predict who would be a conservative and who would be a liberal with frequency of 71.6 percent.
71.6 percent is a pretty high ability to predict who is a conservative and who is a liberal just from brain structure. When you look at what your parents were in terms of predicting what you might be in terms of conservative versus liberal, that enabled you to predict in studies at a rate of 69.5 percent. So very close. Not quite as good and why is that interesting? It’s because the brain is plastic. So the question as to whether you have a brain structure to start with that informs whether you will be a liberal or conservative or whether the formation of certain thoughts from your parents for example shapes your brain structure. Because the brain is plastic and ever changing, particularly in youth. So does thinking certain thoughts or predominantly let’s say utilizing your right amygdala versus your anterior cingulate gyrus inform the growth of those areas and therefore help you predict later who is liberal and who is conservative.
So in terms of interpreting the meaning of different sized structures for a liberal versus a conservative I think you have to look at what that area is predominantly responsible for. So for instance for conservatives if you’re right amygdala is enlarged and that’s the fear processing area you would expect maybe choices or decisions or character and personality to be more informed by a response to a fearful situation. So for example conservatives in fact in personality studies do tend to rate higher in areas of stability, loyalty, not liking change, being more religiously involved in terms of decision making, having that rate higher for them in making certain choices. And if you look at liberals from a personality character standpoint you’re going to find stronger ratings in terms of liking change wanting to actually base decision making on new information, on science information. And so those differences are not surprising in light of these brain structural differences.
Being a liberal or being a conservative really is not black and white. It’s really a bell shaped curve where, you know, someone who considers themselves conservative may be far less conservative so to speak than someone else who still calls themselves a conservative. And that bell shaped curve continues all the way through where in the middle there may be a large group that calls themselves independents.
What we don’t know is whether that has to do with differences in brain structure and so would we see in independents, no one’s does that study to say oh, independents don’t show any differences in brain structure or any differences in say risk taking reaction. So we don’t know for sure what that means but I think it’s fair to say that even when we looked a...

I DO think it's from the brain: I'm just unusually open to new experiences and people, and I've always done risky things. I do creative work. Traditional ways bore or exasperate me. Thank god there are parents that care about their kids’ education in science and art because if they didn’t keep “those” people in check, there would be no arts or science. I don't recognise this American thing of talking about Liberals and Conservatives (with Caps) as complete irreconcilable opposites. Uncapitalized, liberal and conservative are labels you attach to a view or an opinion, not a person. Most people are a mixture of liberal and conservative, depending on the topic.

    • @RobertCollins14
      @RobertCollins14 8 років тому +16

I gave you a thumbs up because I agree it's a terrible way to think about things. That said, the idea is, if you are more liberal you will tend to make MORE liberal decisions based on those views or opinions. Like she said, it's a bell curve, everyone is somewhere on the curve and only a tiny fraction of a percent are at either edge.

    • @dickhamilton3517
      @dickhamilton3517 8 років тому +18

I don't think it's true: I myself am all over the Bell curve, depending on what question you ask - deeply 'conservative' for some things, very 'liberal' for others, the point being that labelling _me_ as conservative or liberal would NOT allow you to predict what my response would be on any given issue without asking. So wtf use is the label? My _average_ position on the curve (over all current issues, say) would tell you nothing predictive at all. And I think there are many like me.

    • @mikewright3837
      @mikewright3837 6 років тому +10

If you are all over that bell curve you must be constantly confused and possibly unknowingly hypocritical. You can feel highly emotional about something while making a logical decision that may conflict with your emotional needs, yes, but be sure not to try to take both sides to appeal to "fairness and equality". For instance, the infamous gun control issue. Left would say guns should be banned, right would say banning guns is against the constitution and we have a right to own them. But trying to meet in the middle isn't always the right way to go. You cant say guns are bad but we need them for our protection so lets compromise and only ban semi-automatic weapons. That whole statement contradicts itself and is highly hypocritical. Of course Im not talking about you directly on this specific issue, but people who think like this in general. The best thing to do is to collect as much information on any given subject, make non-bias conclusions, and find the most logical answer as to not constantly contradict yourself. By the way, if anyone is at all offended by the facts that pours out of this lady's mouth then you are obviously proving her point. I see a lot of butt hurt people who think they know better than a psychologist/ psychoanalyst.

Many immigrants from around the world will first choose a Liberal state or city before anything else. And only if they find it very expensive or crowded would they opt for a Right Wing state like Nabraska etc..

On Facebook, there was one woman where I was not sure who she even was, but she seemed particularly awful, spouting conspiracy theories, covid misinformation, right-wing partisan liberal-bashing. Then I discovered to my shock that she had been a secretary where I had worked for many years, one of the nicest people, that I had liked quite well..
I was not sure if I should take it as a sign that there is hope, or as a sign that there is no hope.
It must be in a small way similar to how a parent must feel when a good kid falls in with a bad crowd, and starts picking up bad habits, surly attitudes, and so on.
A lot of people in this world are very nice and polite, never presenting any noticeable problem, in a certain context, *if* you fit into their mold on all key aspects. But if they are narrow on a particular subject, be it race, or religion, or sexual orientation, or politics, and if you fall outside of their mold on any key area, then you see an ugly side that you otherwise would never see.
A lot of people are better at heart than their politics. Their politics reflect not so much who they are, but what they have been turned into. If you inject snake venom into someone's veins, it will have an inevitable effect. Similarly, when politicians and their propaganda machines start injecting a steady diet of twisted information, intended to rile people up, make them feel angry, make them suspicious, make them feel wronged, directing their resentment by vilifying scapegoats, this unfortunately works. It has an effect and it changes people for the worse. The only way this will stop is if those who resort to such tactics start getting punished at the voting booths for it, until it no longer appears to be a winning strategy.

The political compass is not a good reference for that, because this is just two problematics seen with the same opposition of logics.
It does not follow the psychological antagonisms.
The interests of the values of Schwartz are of better interest, because linked to psychology, and then to neurology.
There are two antagonisms of interest :
1 ) personal focus versus social focus
      2) prevention of loss versus promotion of gain
prevention of loss is linked to fear and fear is linked to ... amygdala. The central value of this is security in the "conservation" group.
promotion of gain is linked to joy, and joy is linked to ... anterior cingulate cortex, the central value is self direction in the group "openness to change".
values of conservative right and far right are around security, and driven by prevention of loss.
Main values of progressive left, democratic socialism, are "self direction" and "universalism" and driven by promotion of gain.
libertarianism and classic liberalism are based on values with focus on self interest.
communities like quakers, amish, etc... rely on benevolence and tradition , conformism values, on social focus.

The anterior cingulate cortex and amygdala have large number of functions: both are involved in pain processing, fear processing among others. You cannot possibly conclude from that study that conservatives are more emotionally reactive, and that liberals are more open minded. The fact that liberals are more open minded is already known in the scientific literature and the results are being mapped artificially to observed differences in brain structure. There needs to be significantly more studies on the topic to be able to draw any kind of conclusion.

"Why Liberal Democrats Throw Toddler Temper Tantrums"
      • Personality: Part of the definition of a Liberal Democrat's personality disorder is an inaccurate perception of reality. When this distorted perception is revealed, the outcome is frequently anger. There are nine different personality disorders but the most likely candidates for this type of Liberal Democrat behavior are those with narcissistic, paranoid, dependent, borderline, obsessive-compulsive, and anti-social (sociopath and psychopath) (pissy-pants) personalities.
      • Addiction: Addicts need justification to continue to abuse their substance of choice. The zwieback-munching Liberal Democrat's typical daily cycle of exploding and then abusing a substance to self-soothe means they need a constant flow of upsetting events in order to rationalize their addiction. Sometimes, the Liberal Democrat's irrational, babyish rage is the first evidence of a hidden addiction.
      • Diversion: In order to avoid exposure in another area, a Liberal Democrat might generate a diversion tactic. The problem is that the Liberal Democrat's diversion needs to be so ridiculous that others lose their focus. Thus an extreme rage is born out of necessity.
      • Regression: A popular but frequently forgotten Liberal Democrat's defense mechanism is regression. When things get too difficult and the diaper-swathed Liberal Democrat feels scared and vulnerable, the defense mechanisms kick in as a way of self-preservation. Regression is a return to babyish behavior as a way to avoid adult-like reality and responsibility.
      • Attention: Just like a pouting toddler, a Liberal Democrat who feels deprived of attention might act out inappropriately. Some adults don’t care if the attention they received is positive or negative, they just want to be at the center by commanding an audience through another stupid tantrum.
•Shame: A Liberal Democrat's hidden shame or embarrassment is an underlying reason for some explosions. This fight response is so instinctive that in severe cases of PTSD, a Liberal Democrat might not even realize or remember that they have exploded.
      • Guilt: Sometimes the root of an angry Liberal Democrat's rage is guilt. When a Liberal Democrat feels guilty for their behavior or actions, an immature response is to react in anger. While the Liberal Democrat's anger is really more about losing than another person, it is far easier to project that Liberal Democrat's anger onto others than it is to take responsibility for losing and other stupid behavior.
      • Fear: Once again, a Liberal Democrat's immature response to feelings of fear of losing is to respond with anger. Instead of admitting to being afraid of being a loser, which can look weak in some eyes, a person might do the opposite by aggressively exploding in anger. This suppresses the fear only temporarily but it does deflect others from seeing the loser's hidden fear.
      • Manipulation: “What are Liberal Democrats getting out of this,” is question that should be asked to check for Liberal Democrat manipulative behavior. If a loser benefits in some way by acting out, they will continue to act out. It is simple cause and effect behavior. To modify this, stop giving the Liberal Democrat what they want and they will naturally find another way to lose.
      •Then paddle them.

Ebenezer Kalarama all you have written is a more accurate portrayal of the average conservative mindset and action MO. Taking Conservative faults, listing them thoughtfully, and articulately and then simply labeling them as liberal, strains your credibility to the point of hypocrisy. It’s a disservice to your political prowess, and it serves only to divide. All the things you have listed have been on full display in Trump’s WH. But are ignored or defended in the name of “owning libs.” A poor, and contrite goal which perfectly highlights the very core of your ideological and ethical failures. So dispute your best efforts. You have simply proven correct every negative stereotype assigned to your political ideology. It’s almost impressive when you consider the audacity of its simple honesty.

Liberals are more "free to new information/behavior" and Conservatives "keep hold of the things they value." So it's only framed negatively if you think of it that way. Sounds like a lot of this conservative vs. liberal conflict comes down to a lack of common language. Right wingers can't seem to be able to tell the difference between an actual liberal, a socialist, or a communist; and left wingers are slowly becoming unable to tell the difference between a conservative and a fascist. Society needs a complete reset and re-education on what all of these terms actually mean and on an individual level apply these definitions introspectively to understand what their political standing actually is. But I think I'm just preaching to choir here.

"An open mind is like a fortress with its gates unbarred and unguarded."
Being open-minded is good, up until the point bad ideas entrench themselves in your head. If that happens, you are no longer open-minded. Being close-minded protects you from bad ideas and offers stability of mind, focus and safety. However, lack of change leads to stagnation. We don't want that.

That is only an illusion of stability maintained by pretending there aren't new ideas at every gate, banging down the doors to get in. You cannot keep it all out forever. The only way is to ensure you can handle new information once it gets in. You do that through controlled exposure.

That's progressive taxing. You'd still be swimming in wealth, while your obvious excess money would be directed to those responsible individuals in need. Also, you might find tax-deductible ways to donate money to causes close to your heart if you don't want to trust the gov't with your tax millions. Fact of the future (today) is that automation will rob jobs and opportunities. But it's OK, you don't have to pay anything to anyone. But there will be chaos if you don't make sure that people have what they need in order to be happy and stable. History might have an example or two about this.

Liberalism is not an ideology. It is an inability to use logic and reason to understand how the counterintuitive nature of the universe works, so a person falls back on their emotions to reach a conclusion.
Laissez Faire economics/government are counterintuitive ideas. Laffer curve, more guns equal less crime, and peace thru strength are counterintuitive ideas.
That is why there are no successful liberal radio talk shows. It's becauseLiberals can't understand ideas, they need moving pictures or hand puppets to trigger their emotions.
They have done huge global psychological studies on humans where they asked thousands of people hundreds of questions. Liberals always show up as low in contientiousness and conservatives always show up as high in contientiousness. Meaning liberals have no intention of doing what is right or making sacrifices for the good of society.

Think whatever you want, just do it critically.
The 5 Steps to Critical Thinking:
    What is critical thinking?
In general, critical thinking refers to actively questioning statements rather than blindly accepting them.
Critical thinking results in radical free will.
    1. The critical thinker is flexible yet maintains an attitude of healthy skepticism.
Critical thinkers are open to new information, ideas, and claims. They genuinely consider alternative explanations and possibilities. However, this open-mindedness is tempered by a healthy sense of skepticism (Hyman, 2007).
The critical thinker consistently asks, “What evidence supports this claim?”
    2. The critical thinker scrutinizes the evidence before drawing conclusions.
Critical thinkers strive to weigh all the available evidence before arriving at conclusions. And, in evaluating evidence, critical thinkers distinguish between empirical evidence versus opinions based on feelings or personal experience.
    3. The critical thinker can assume other perspectives.
Critical thinkers are not imprisoned by their own points of view. Nor are they limited in their capacity to imagine life experiences and perspectives that are fundamentally different from their own. Rather, the critical thinker strives to understand and evaluate issues from many different angles.
    4. The critical thinker is aware of biases and assumptions.
In evaluating evidence and ideas, critical thinkers strive to identify the biases and assumptions that are inherent in any argument (Riggio & Halpern, 2006). Critical thinkers also try to identify and minimize the influence of their own biases.
    5. The critical thinker engages in reflective thinking.
Critical thinkers avoid knee-jerk responses. Instead, critical thinkers are reflective. Most complex issues are unlikely to have a simple solution. Therefore, critical thinkers resist the temptation to sidestep complexity by boiling an issue down to an either/or, yes/no kind of proposition. Instead, the critical thinker expects and accepts complexity (Halpern, 2007).
Critical thinking is not a single skill, but rather a set of attitudes and thinking skills. As is true with any set of skills, you can get better at these skills with practice.
In a nut shell, critical thinking is the active process of minimizing preconceptions and biases while evaluating evidence, determining the conclusions that can be reasonably be drawn from evidence, and considering alternative explanations for research findings or other phenomena.
    CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
    >Why might other people want to discourage you from critical thinking?
    >In what situations is it probably most difficult or challenging for you to exercise critical thinking skills? Why?
    > What can you do or say to encourage others to use critical thinking in evaluating questionable claims or assertions?

It's a bit of a stretch, but we know that certain genes are "turned on" or "turned off" in certain situations or environments. I have to wonder if gene selection doesn't somehow take into account not just the passing on of genes, but also whether they are activated or not. Anecdotally, it seems to me that conservatives often try to create a world suited to their particular views and prejudices. They seem more comfortable in a world like human beings lived in for hundreds of thousands of years, a more tribal, more traditional and less evidenced-based world.
Conservative attitudes would have been appropriate and beneficial to human thriving for hundreds of thousands of years. The tribalism we see at play in fundamentalist christians and muslims, the amped-up hostility towards the other tribe, would have made perfect sense in small tribal societies competing for resources. We now find ourselves in a situation where this impedes human thriving. In a world where no one in power has conservative values, everyone is very quickly fed and clothed. We're at a point where we actually produce resources, and this is based on cooperation, not competition. Conservative attitudes, driven unconsciously, of course, seem to want not just to make us progress more slowly, but rather seem to want us to regress backward to a more primitive societal structure like we see in lower primates.
This view can be evidenced in almost any issue. Take abortion, where we have an overwhelming instinct to reproduce. It's literally the purpose of life. The traditional instinct is to breed. We see conservatives actually reproducing faster than liberals (cf Mike Judges Idiocracy). This is in a situation where population is driving environmental and natural resource management issues that threaten human existence. The rational, objective thing to do is to make birth control and sex education the norm and slow or reverse population growth. The smart thing for humanity to do going forward is obvious, but we see conservatives being opposed to this in every way and giving incredibly irrational reasons for their views.
The end result of this regressivism, and we can imagine this being played out throughout time on a small scale, is that we will over populate the environment, in this case, the entire world, and be reduced to barbarism and eventually revert back to an illiterate tribal society.
Even how we take in information is impacted by this liberal-conservative dichotomy. In primitive cultures, prior to written language, we would have been completely dependent on tradition being passed down. You could not google how to open a coconut. You would have only been able to get this information by it being passed down from authority figures within the tribe. Innovation would have been discouraged because there would have been a coconut opening procedure that had worked and allowed the tribe to flourish. We see this resistance to change in modern conservatives also, where they seem to be completely unwilling to judge things based on a modern world. Their opposition to gays for examples seems to harken back to a past where, to borrow from Monty Python, every sperm is sacred and where humanity needed to out-reproduce a high infant mortality rate.
The end result again of all these conservative behaviors seems to that it creates an environment that is less open, more fearful (everyone needs to armed!), more backward, less informed. In other words, it creates an environment that is suited to conservative thinking. Take conscious rationalization out of it, observe people as if they are monkeys, and see if you don't see this tendency in conservative actions to create the environment where these actions would be appropriate.
The "doubling down" almost always happens on one side of the political spectrum. What I tend to hear from the left is exactly what Dr. Satlz does here. I hear should be open and listen to each other, and conservatives have valid ideas too. Horseshit. Two plus two is four. It's not a reasonable compromise when someone says it's five to agree to four and a half. Argumentation does not work the way that the professor imagines. If we look a Roe v Wade, a Solomonic compromise between the right and the left if there ever was one, we see the left arguing the middle position, that abortion is bad but sometimes necessary, and we see the right arguing that little magic babies live in stem cells. We also see the subsequent erosion of women's rights. The left needs to _quit_ compromising with the right. President Obama has tried to do this for 8 years and has gotten egg on his face every time. The _right_ has pretty much been _wrong_ about everything for four decades. Compromising with conservatives is going to get us nuclear war and an earth too warm for human existence. We need to "double down," triple down, and be every bit as intransigent as the conservatives. It is moral cowardice to be right, correct, and then not effectively advocate for that right. If you're in a burning building and someone is advocating to throw gasoline on the fire to put it out, you don't try to have calm, reasonable discussion with them. You dismiss their input and talk amongst the reasonable people for a solution.
Gun control is a good example of this. Statistics say gun ownership makes you _less_ safe. This is simply a fact. The reason that we cannot proceed on gun control is not because both sides cannot effectively communicate. It's because the right, conservatives, cannot accept this simple _fact._ No one credible is advocating for banning guns. Guns aren't banned in Australia or the UK. They simply require a great deal more training prior to allowing private citizens to own guns. Fully automatic weapons in the US aren't banned. We simply require a great deal more training and authorization before we allow someone to own a fully automatic weapon. The right, conservatives, are simply _wrong_ on gun control, but this again gets back to argumentation. They are wrong on the facts, but they are much, much better at advocating their position, and not just because it is a simplistic one that is easy to argue. They toe the line that any kind of regulation on gun ownership is bad, and they don't compromise.

This brickwall of text is a perfect example of the superiority complex of the left. An unarmed people, is an enslaved people. Always.
If you dont want a gun, dont own one; if you want gun control, feel free to give yourself that disadvantage, while criminals, of both common, and state-santioned variety, ignore gun control, while mugging you, or sending you to the mass grave site.

Totally get this. I grew up in the suburbs with what had been a "gun", NRA family. Went to gun shows with my grandfather.
I didn't get the liberal "anti-gun" movement although I'm as left as it gets. But I became informed and now would seek a middle path

I believe liberals and conservatives complement each other in the ability to create stable and creative community structures. This is why we've survived this long. But when we get pulled apart by fears, that is when instability can happen.

What I find interesting is that she stated that liberal neural structures made people more likely to accept new information and change their mind. I'm a moderate centrist who knows many people on both sides of the aisle, and has frequent conversations and debates with them. What I have found is that people who identify on the extreme left, are the most stubborn people I've ever talked to. Not only are they usually unwilling to absorb new information and reexamine their positions, they typically respond to any information that doesn't support their own ideological positions in an emotional way, forsaking rational debate to accuse the other of being racist, sexist, (insert minority group)phobic, etc. Certainly this can be true for those on the extreme right as well, which is kind of my point. Ideologically extreme people are rarely interested in having their ideals challenged, because why would you? What happens if you find out your wrong? Everything you based your life on could turn out to be bs. That's why what I'm interested in is trying to get people to recognize that being extremely ideological, regardless of the ideology itself, is inevitably going to lead people to make mistakes, ignore, or worse dehumanize people they disagree with, and generally keep their heads up their own asses all their lives....

I'm extreme Left, but I rely on facts and science to help me make decisions. I have often changed my mind when new evidence was presented. For instance, at one point I thought homosexuality was a choice, but now I reject that hypothesis. Generalisms are usually flawed.

Jesse, what would their behavior look like when including the fact that a conservative point of view is not an expansion of conscious reality testing? Rather a conservative POV is predicated on a psychological split into an identity and shadow as a strategy to fit in by being unconscious patterns of behavior. The purpose of the identity/shadow split is to disconnect from conscious feedback and actual experience.

“Extreme left” lol. There is no “extreme left” in the United States, we don’t even have a major party to the left of the Overton window. Our parties are extreme AuthRight and AuthRight lite. Every “extreme leftist” you’ve ever spoken to in America is an effing right winger and belongs to an AuthRight party.

One person one vote doesn’t not really occur on a federal level in the United States. In the senate all states get two senators regardless of population. So a Wyoming voter has about 60 times the voting power in the Senate compared to a California voter. This all applies in the electoral college, although to a smaller degree, since the votes per state are the sum of the number of senators and representatives. This helps explains the difficulty in moving any meaningful progressive change in the U.S.

I had this exact same thought when she said it, and my brain immediately went to the exact same states.
"More like one person in California .65 of a vote, one person in Wyoming 1.45 of a vote."
I don't know what the actual values are, the ones I used are just an arbitary guess.

I stopped delusing myself in trying to find a common ground.. I have been trying since the Obama era 2008 - 2020 with my conservative family members. and friends.
The country is so so divided.
How can you have a serious conversation with people that have abandoned Facts, Reality, science, rationality, critical thinking, logic etc?
You tell them that Trump lost the election and they don't want to believe it..They are willing to go to war for it, they are willing to die for that lie. Tried to be as charitable during the pandemic (Covid-19) situation, constantly telling them to be a bit more empathetic to those more vaulnarable. They just labelled it all FAKE virus and would just break covid rule on puropse.
Tell Now the FBI raided trumps estate, these conservatives are calling for the FBI to be disbanded, be killed, a paranoid conservative that was also at the capitol riot took it in his own hands by attacking an FBI office before he had a shoot out with police and was killed, died for Trump..
What method are you going to use when these people have Fox News and other conservative media absolutely whipping them into a frenzy?
You try to be understanding but these Right Wingers are so far gone mentally. Nothing is real unless Trump says it is. Anything that goes against my conservative view point is either FAKE NEWS or dangerous Liberal propaganda etc..
Have you got any new communication methods that you suggest we can use to reach these Conservative / Right Wingers today? Because I have tried since the 2010 Republican TEA PARTY movement. All they are talking about is "We need a civil war. We need to exterminate all these evil, immoral p£dophile Liberals once and for all in order to save America".
      What more can we do?
      🙂
