I've had a few projects that started out as a "bench", then became a stool, then to a kitchen cutting board and finally ending up as a coaster for my morning coffee.....Gotta love it!,,,
Great work! It is inspiring that you work a bit roughly with some basic tools, but it is so refreshing from the Lie Nielsen / Festool - gang with all the extreme expensive gear. This is authentic! Keep it up!
One of my favourite parts of this video was watching you pare away the wood on the splines with a sharp chisel...heaven! The bench looks amazing and I love the joinery involved. Concerning the mistakes that were made a wise man once told me to "embrace the suck".
What a great looking bench, the build! Your 'errors' actually took you down a path of great resolve in the end! The gap can be used for all kinds of things!
Like the design and choice of wood in this project. Don't worry about the mistakes, heck, we all make them. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and ideas with us. Best wishes.
Nice bench. The only bobo I saw was the way you pared the mortis holes. Use a guide block to keep the chisel from cutting in to deep to your line. Congrads on the little one.
true inspiration man ! Congrats for the future kid ! I am in the process of finishing my planning beam, I don't have japanese equipement other than the saw but I am doing stuff with what I got :) Thanks for the inspiration
Only just found your video and I’m loving your style. You actually sound like a Japanese wise man by the wise words and tips you give . Sound chilled out . Have you a video on sharpening your tools as that plane looks razor Watching in England
Congrats on the baby! Awesome work on this project, was very happy to see the video today. Future video idea: saw choices and the quality of cuts you get with each one. Have three saws now (very fine, fine and rough), but missing that middle ground of speed and acceptable results in general house projects.
Congratulations!! Thanks for the video. I really appreciate how relatable your videos are. Thanks for sharing so much of your making and problem solving processes. Your bench turned out great. I noticed with your first bench idea that if you had an azebiki you might have been able to make the cuts you were going for a little easier, albeit maybe more slowly. Do you have an azebiki? I have 3 (nothing at all fancy), but you’re welcome to one if you need one. Thanks again for the video and congratulations on becoming a Dad.
Thanks for watching and for the offer on the saw. That's very kind of you. Right now I'm actually selling some tools to get a few of the more expensive baby things but I appreciate the offer!
My apartment neighbors would not have appreciated the volume of power tools and the management had an issue with it. Hence why when I lived in the apartment when I made this video I used hand tools for everything. Power tools are my best friends lol
I love the "doingy" sound a ryoba makes
It's like a typewriter "doing! You're done sawing"
@@Lemongrasspicker OMG. yes!!
@@thelevicole Every time I hold my saw , I ike to hear it's sounds ha I love it 😊 too .
I love how Paul Sellers acknoledged the sound his saw made by doing a short pause and then exclaiming "BOING" :D

Like it that you do all of this on your balcony.

Thanks sir! I appreciate your support as always
LOL. Is that something like Wabi Sabi?

Love your enthusiasm. Excellent.
Congrats ! I love your channel
Congrats on the new edition.
Congratulations on the family addition. I will always keep an eye out for more videos whenever you can get to it.
Thanks! I appreciate the support
Pretty cool bench. I like keeping the out takes and mistakes in and how you handle them.
Thanks for watching sir!
Sometimes you learn more from your mistakes
wow , love it .👍
indeed we learn from our mistakes !🤔
Ooh that looks good
Great video and build. Your neighbors must love you.
They never once complained lol
It's lovely bench of nice dad!
Thanks!

I'm glad you find it inspiring. I'm just a normal guy my friend.
Congratulations to your soon to be new edition to your family.

awesome
Congrats!
It would be cool to see how some of your projects have held up over time and what you liked or what you would change.
So...oo Cool !
I thought you were making a split top saw bench at first. Build it slightly different and it could easily serve the purpose.
It could be that. I'd prefer a purpose built one but it does resemble that design a bit.
Damn yo! Those chisels are sharp! Like for real my homey! ... what grit does one sharpen to? If I may be so bold as to enquire? .... sike!
I actually am planning a video on sharpening soon
@@Lemongrasspicker 4 YEARS!!!!
What happened to this build?
I love the sound & sheen on the work and shaving you only get from a kanna plane. Saves having to sand afterwards!
I still have it actually! Still serves its purpose on my backporch
how do you square off your parts, it's never shown, or is it not an issue in the type of project?
With a Japanese planing board all you do is just lay your piece flat against the stop and go at it
Welcome to fatherhood, dude.
Thanks. It's going to be an adventure for sure
maybe you can make a cradle for your next project?
Thought about that. We didnt have enough space in the apartment at the time I made this
Do you own any power tools?
Do you use hand tools just for videos
Or that's your thing?
My apartment neighbors would not have appreciated the volume of power tools and the management had an issue with it. Hence why when I lived in the apartment when I made this video I used hand tools for everything. Power tools are my best friends lol
I live red cedar. Is it the same as Spanish cedar? I have carved spanish cedar.
It's quite a bit different than Spanish cedar. Workability is about the same but grain and figure are completely different along with the smell.
What about a shou sugi ban finish on it? Quick and fun vid.
Not sure the apartment complex would've appreciated a blow torch being used on the patio lol
A plumber's torch is sufficient though it will take a tad longer than a larger torch would
9:32 - are you crying salty tears on your work?
Sweat my friend lol 98F with 80% humidity will do that
First here
Hi can you make a video on how to do a rip cut on just a standard table
Thanks for watching. I actually have done a video on making a Japanese tool box. If you look under my video list it's from about a year ago.
Why do you keep changing your comment to include a different question?
Do you know yet,boy or girl?
Boy! He's gonna be a troublemaker like his dad
Red Headed?
@@carlcooper3525 we will find out when we meet him lol
Good answer but I bet he will be a ride head. May God Bless!
Not ride but red.
Not rustic, wabi-sabi.
Haha! Indeed sir
