I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my sweet lil doggo Olive and over 100 houseplants. Your "random cactus from an ex-lover" is a moon cactus! The top and bottom pieces are grafted together!

@@wildfern I've heard that both of them naturally have different growing conditions so they're probably not going to do much
moon cacti won't grow because the top grafted part can't produce any chlorophyll, so it gets it's energy from the base cactus. Mine eventually exhausted itself trying to feed the top and died :(

I found euphorbia like your big ones at lowes and i regret not buying them. I literally think about them everyday🥺
The first cactus is a grafted Gymnocalycium mihanovichii . They grafted this cactus on to a dragon fruit stem. Commonly called moon cactus. They graft all sorts of cactus like this. Usually the bright flouro pink and yellow ones, as they have no green chlorophyl and cannot photo synthesize on there own. They won't grow with their own roots usually. You have some really nice cacti. Great video Wildfern.

Wow that is a huge moon cactus. I have one same color, but has never gotten much bigger (it did grow a dragonfruit plant off shoot I potted separately that is wee but wants to continually grow). I have an Easter cactus that is so sadly droopy & hasn't flowered in a few years. Your holiday cactus is thriving! The blooms are so gorgeous though for sure!
I wish succulents liked me! It seems like no matter what I do they always die in my care. I have a cactus but want to get more! The prickly pear snow one reminds me of a fluffy cat tail! 😍

Because of you I got a Christmas cactus tho, and yes sir, the bloom it’s amazing 😍 (mine has two bloom colors, like pink and red)
My night blooming Cereus cactus blooms yearly!!! And I have found that sometimes a little nub stays after the flower dies and becomes this cute little red/pink fruit. I feed it to my tortoise and he loves it!

I have a cactus fern (maybe fern leaf cactus not sure) which is very similar to the ric rac and I literally cut it anywhere on the plant and stick it in some dirt or a vase of water and roots grow pretty fast I personally like dirt propagation because when the roots grow it immediately puts out new growth I have made many many babies from mine the leaves are so long they drag the ground about 2-3ft long trails ...I propagate this one in the winter also it has put more growth out now than ever

I used to have a "bunny ear" cactus but it died. They are really cute. I love your Thanksgiving cactus. I have one that is just barely beginning to get buds so I can't wait till it blooms. Plant is really big like yours.

I think Thanksgiving cacti are actually cacti, but jungle cacti which are more thirsty. mine is currently in bloom😍😍😍

I’ve been wanting one of those spiral cacti so bad. The thanksgiving cactus are actually cacti. They look so different from most cacti because they grow on trees and rock cliffs in the rainforest epiphytically

While the opuntia and moon cactus are actual cacti, they are also succulents. All cacti are succulent but not all succulents are cacti. 😉

I let my prickly pear snow dry out way to much! It will be completely flopped over, then I water him want rotate so I can prop it up along the window and it goes back up.

Really enjoyed this as I only have a couple of Aloes. My house only has East and West facing windows so I need cacti/succulents that don’t need full sun! Did you paint the white pot the first one was in. If so, what paint is best for terracotta pots? Also, what soil mix do you use? Is it different for cacti and succulents? Sorry for all the questions😅 Last one. The Howorthia in the glass container. How will you manage to remove it once it has outgrown the space?

As some have already mentioned, the first one is called a moon cactus.
NERD ALERT!
It is more specifically a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii mutant strain grafted on what looks like a Hylocereus rootstock. The Hylocereus cactus produce the dragonfruits you can buy and eat. The mutated cacti can sometimes be degrafted and planted directly in soil, but only if they have green in them or are purple. The bright coloured ones do not produce any chorophyl and require therefore a rootstock to survive.

Mostly windows, but I did move a couple into the plant room with grow lights :)

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I recently got a Christmas cactus, and it keeps dropping leaves. Am I underwatering? Overwatering? It is still tiny, but it had a lot of blooms when I bought it, and they all fell off. Help!
Ohhh :( Could be over or underwatering! Mine is quite tolerant to drying out though so I'd be more inclined to guess that it's overwatered.
Is there a trick to the trade in knowing if the cactus are spikey or not?? I'm terrified of the spikey ones 😂 I just got my first dogtail cactus and the only reason I was brave enough to purchase it is because the other girl looking at them while I was frantically googling if it was spikey, just up and touched it no hesitation!
I have never come across a trick, so not sure! I get poked sometimes and it’s less than enjoyable 😅
