Applying something I learned in my Biology B. Sc. here 🤓 - cacti are succulents, too. Succulescence means thickening of plant tissue for water storage. So an aloe Vera is as much a succulent as a cactus. I think the differentiation is just bc leaves can also be succulent, but for cacti it's usually only the stem tissue that is succulent and they have thorns, which is a variety of a leaf. That's why botanically speaking, roses don't have thorns (but spikes I guess, I didn't study in English though). The drought tolerance can still differ between succulents bc they can originate from more or less arid environments. Hope you enjoy this nerdy plant knowledge as much as I do 😂❤
Love the succulent videos! Just a little tip, I would let succulents/cacti sit in their new soil for at least a day before watering them in. I find that they like some time to callous over any root damage that may have occurred during repotting 😊 I hope to see your succulent collection continue to grow, they are so rewarding! 💚
Succulents were the first type of plant I got into, but I also live in the pacific northwest and I lost many over the winter! I am excited to get to move them back outside for the summer to get some of the good sunshine. I also love my variegated bear paw and any other fuzzy succulent! ❤
Hi I love your videos especially this cactus one. Recently been loving them now I have a list to buy thank you. Glad to see you feeling better. Love Melea from Oregon
I have a baby Stapelia I got from Home Depot for $5 in SW Ontario Canada. Gave it an up pot after watching this video. She had some roots. Can't wait for it to bloom for me
Beautiful collection! One of my favorite hanging jungle cacti is the coral cactus, it sun stresses a beautiful shade of red. I also have a soft spot for lithops, which most people don’t seem to like 😅
I would say that your bear paws probably need more light. Most succulent keeps kept outside as an outdoor plants but since its variegated, I say bright indoor light
😁🤙❤...yes. I'd definitely like to see propagating of the 1 succulent w the hitch hiker in it. I thought that was a cactus...mine flowered over winter too...then went very dormant...put under grow lite. I think treating it like a cactus, watering infrequently...may have caused it's slow growth. 🤔😊
Im setting aside some time this weekend for a mass-repotting of my plants who need it! I probably "only" have 30 plants in total, and not all will need repotting, but i am really excited! Spring is well and truly here!
Hi. I live in a similar climate (sunwise at least) than you, I dont have a garden and my cacti dont stretch in winter. You need to keep them completly dry (minus the Rhipsalis) and cold (depending on the sp. it can be down to 0°C and lower). The plant will go dormant and can be kept in the darkest spot of your appartement. Most species need this to actually be happy and bloom profusely, other will eventually die without a cold and dry rest. Even my Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas cacti a COMPLETLY dry duting 4-5 months and kept in a cool and dark place. Same for all my succulents: Stapelia, Cotyledon, Crassula etc... All completly dry and cold for months.
Ayeee always a good day when Fern gives us another video! Hope you're doing well! I just got some fun plants and have been wanting to share with someone lol. I just got a Hoya multiflora variegated, a rare Spathiphyllum 'Galaxy' (Which is only sold by 1 seller in the world who is based out of Hawaii), a Philodendron Florida Beauty, and a Philodendron Golden Dragon. Nothing better than getting in new plants! :D
8:35 I had to buy one after seeing your prop. video! And it just makes random warts that turn into tails🤣 the first one I took of it, and it had some sort if roots, so I just planted it back, and its still alive🤭
Love a good cacti and succulent repot! Bought a stapelia grandiflora last summer so hoping it flowers for me this autumn like yours did. Another excellent video. Appreciate your content.
@@jimmyna5644 thank you for the suggestions. I’m not sure what kind I had , because it was a gift... friends who made a bet how long will it last in my care ?! 😂☺️ I think a month .maybe...I was impressed with myself
OMG I have both of the new succulents you want to get! The Cooperi is gorgeous when you see it in person. Mine was much larger than expected and came with 5 pups...only 3 have survived so far, but they have gotten so large! The Graptopetalum I got as just a leaf and now have a tiny pup! I would also recommend the Pachyphytum Oviferum which looks similar, but is more green with pink hues in the sunlight.
I feel you Fern, I live in the Cascade foothills where it’s basically always cloudy. I just got a grow light last month to see how it went and omg my plants are growing at rapid speeds!! I’m so mad I didn’t do it sooner. 🤣 Especially my pink princess, it’s throwing out tons of leaves with fantastic variegation!
The same thing happened to me when I moved to Portland from SoCal last year. I was resisting getting grow lights cuz they’re ugly and I hate cords lol but in this climate it’s not an option anymore, I finally got some and yeah my plants grew so much over the entire winter, I was so surprised- I’ll be getting more now sure!
I really like using a soil scoop or for small pots a table spoon or even tea spoon, I find that makes getting the soil around the plant way easier and I get less soil onto my plants. Just wanted to share. Also the cactus in the grey planter looks like a bunny, with small arms and really long ears :D
I love your cacti & succulents so much! ☺️ Your monkey tail so looking amazing!! 🐒 and love your Euphorbia white ghost 👻 Also obsessed with your variegated Opuntia and little Bear paw🐻🐾 I have the green and the variegated and the green one is definitely a bit hardier I think it's just how they are. But yeah I'd also love to have the other variegated one so I have the full set🤭🤭🤭
I have the first two succulents that you repotted. They haven't bloomed yet but are getting more growth. Cannot wait 😂. I did have the variegated lifesaver plant, it was very small but she didn't make it. Will try to get another and see what happens. Love succulents so much.
I've had the same experience with bear paw succulents - I have both the variegated and the green one. I let them both dry out too much a couple times and the green one bounced back when I started caring for them again whereas the variegated one has just remained kinda unhappy since. It's alive, but not thriving. Also the green one blooms constantly and the variegated one has never bloomed for me!
Yes please make a video on the first plant you repotted :) I have the same one and it did so good on my porch last summer then it slowly went down hill once I brought it in. I live in Ohio so my climate here sucks as well thank gosh it’s spring time. Now I only have a small piece of it left and I would love to see your tips and tricks for growing yours that size!! :) p.s I love your videos and energy!
I love seeing your White Ghost. I just ordered a Huernia Zebrina from Etsy. I am in awe of the bloom. So strange. Love your videos. Missed seeing Olive. Have a good day. 💚🌱💚
You basically showed it, but It seems that the monkey tail grows more uniformly when the growth is coming directly from the top, so the best way to do it (if all you had was a longer cutting) would be to cut it and let the growth just come from that point over time🤷🏻♀️ So even though it's cool to have that really mature piece, I'd probably cut that one all the way closer to the base and let that regrow and leave the other pieces that have already grown from the top! ❤
Always nice to give love to succulents/cacti. I had the bear paw twice, and I killed them both by overwatering. They are so cute, but not as easy to care for as I thought 😅.
Hi fern! Can you give some advice on how to propagate euphorbia? I cut an arm off of my enolpa and its been callousing for 4 days now and I have no idea where to go from here
I love the monkey tail cactus! When you first showed it here on UA-cam I had a dream that I found one growing in a park LOL. Very unlikely when you live in BC, I haven't even seen one in a store here.

Any time I try to grow White Ghost it does great during the Summer, but then outside during the rains it gets root rot and goes downhill. What kind of soil mix do you use for this?
Mine is in the cactus and succulent mix from Valley Succulents - valleysucculents.ca/cactus-soil-three-pack/ It is very coarse and fast draining.
@@wildfern Looking at photos of that soil mix, it looks to be about equal parts of perlite, pumice, and potting soil?
I sympatuise with your climate woes. WhereI live, from November to March, we live under a thick layer of cloud :(
