    Wow, I am so happy I watched this. I have felt the exact same way as you, feeling like an underachiever for my age, trying to fill that void with the clothes that the person I wished I was would wear. It's a hard truth to recognize, but it can only get better from here.

      Once I realized it, the shopping list a lot of appeal and I started looking for things to do that actually made me feel better. Feeling like an underachiever is an insecurity rather than a truth, it's completely subjective because we all have a different path to go on in life. So, don't feel bad! We just need to modify a few habits and thought patterns to move forward. 😉

    I recently achieved a minor personal goal, and I thought that I would reward myself for that my buying myself a makeup product. After looking around for awhile, I realised that I couldn't find anything that I actually cared about or wanted. All I could think about was all the lipstick or whatever that I already have at home in every colour I could conceivably want to use.

      Absolutely, which is why I would start treating myself with experience based purchases instead like food, drink, outing etc...

    I can definitely relate it to wanting the "perfect" thing that will magically make me happy. For me, it has turned out to be another element of my desire to control elements of my life that are within my reach. A lot of the examples of other things you've tried are also examples of things that you can try to control. I can't speak from a place of success, because I'm still working at it, but it seems like I'm having some progress through mindfulness meditation focused on control and letting go.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  3 роки тому +1

      It's painful and difficult to confront the source of such desires. I think you are speaking from a place of success, because any progress towards your goal is an achievement. You're still in a better place now than before. ❤

      @@wegotdawsonhere1659 I just keep reminding myself over and over to do something better with my time and energy. I'm finding that I meditate more often, for sure, but this has been a bad week for impulsive habits! (Remember that there will be ups and downs.)

    What a beautiful video!
    This is one of the most insightful videos I’ve seen on the topic.
    It’s important to ask ourselves those questions. In my case, I think I buy because it “entertains” me, i find it fun or I am curious. The thing I’ve been asking myself lately is “Claudia, why don’t you get curious about something worth your time and energy? Get curious about getting healthy, or about creating better habits, or get curious about investing and getting rich”
    This year I want to take my focus elsewhere. I want to spend it on something that brings me a larger ROI than just a few weeks of excitement.

      Thanks so much! I really like the way you phrased the end of you comment. How funny, I had a manager with the same name as you when I worked in retail years back. I definitely want to turn my attention towards aspects of my life that need tending. It's just interesting how I stumbed into this without actually planning to. Now I'm excited to go onwards with intention and see where it takes me.

    I think makeup looks the same you can't tell wich eyeshadow palette someone is wearing, we don't need new eyeshadow launches every week

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +5

      I will admit, for a while you could tell what someone was wearing if they picked the most iconic mix of shades a certain palette had to offer (i.e. ABH Subculture or something specific from Urban Decay). But now, everyone is doing the same color combinations from cheap to high end. The variety is limitless. Thanks for pointing that out, there are too many new releases!

    I can relate. I watched the documentary called Minimalism it's on netflix too and it makes you really think about the way you buy stuff and this whole society as a whole. Eye opening.
    I can get rid of stuff so easily now and I think twice before buying.
    I was never a big make up buyer but I was obssessed with clothes.
    Now I'm 29 and I rather use my money for something important.
    I got my staple make up hair products and that's it. And with clothes I only like stuff that with last. I don't follow trends anymore. I buy vintage too.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +2

      I started with clothes then turned to makeup in 2012 when I gained 30lbs. I learned that shopping habits are transferable to different categories of your life if you don't evaluate them!
      I watched that documentary! I also saw the founders of that documentary get featured on the Dave Ramsey channel too (I'm taking steps to go on a debt free journey). The eye opener was Marie Kondo for me, but I can't watch the Netflix show. I felt her message was so much more effective in writing.
      I learned all of this stuff, but am only brave enough to put it into practice more agressively now. I love your approach to clothing, makeup and hair products - trends don't work for me any more either.

      YUP! It really hit a cord with me when she said she wasn't getting support when she wanted to turn her channel around at that time. It made me look at the videos I did years back around decluttering. Sure, I could have filmed them better - but the interest wasn't there. I've seen a huge turn around in 2019, we're finally fed up!

    Great video as always love ... Im glad you’re getting a good response from it , and the fact that I’ve known you in real life makes me feel like I’m less alone in thinking this way. I moved out and graduated in my later 20s.. I have debts mainly because of frivolous spending (eating out, taking Uber’s everywhere , buying too many clothes , makeup and then home decor when I moved out ). I think one of the main issues with me is that I get influenced so easily by the you tubers I like and I’m totally hooked on them and their lives. They make me feel like I NEED certain things that I know I don’t, but sometimes I find myself buying them anyway. They’re successful and it’s as if I feel that if I’m buying what they’re buying, that I’ll be as successful as them.. but realistically speaking, I don’t make 10k+ a month like they probably do.. so I should compare myself. Good luck finding a job! I’m also looking for a « real job » since finishing my degree .. I’m excited to watch your journey! Would love to become debt-free with you :) if you can recommend other minimalist you tubers like yourself - let me know! I need to watch people who are better influences 😂

      Aww thanks Sarah, it actually helped a bit to know you struggled with something similar to me. You never know what life is like beyond the gram!
      A lot of bigger UA-camrs really make bank, but it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't great at managing it. If their sponsorships dry up so would their lifestyles (it happened to me on a smaller scale). Especially since a lot of them struggle with compulsive shopping or living beyond their means (aka moi again lol).
      Finding a real job is REAL lol. Right now, I'm interested in finding a company that has space to grow than it being the dream gig.
      For channels, it depends what you are looking for exactly:
      Use Less - Minimal wardrobe, timeless wardrobe content, thrifting ua-cam.com/users/signe2605
      the geek is chic - She talks about shopping designer stuff second hand. Her "why you shouldn´t buy a Chanel bag" video is amazing ua-cam.com/video/zf6wLfFCVac/v-deo.html
      Downshiftology - more of a minimalist/healthy cooking channel with crazy practical tips!! ua-cam.com/channels/YidQwKhM3WTDKpT8pwfJzw.htmlvideos
      Kelly Gooch - makeup reviews, but she does makeup inventories and tries to keep her numbers down ua-cam.com/channels/taVEzJD90lyxwumMzwOQzQ.htmlvideos
      Aja Dang - she does budget videos and got out of $200,000 debt in two years. ua-cam.com/users/ajabdangvideos
      Style Apotheca - from Toronto, also doing a debt journey but she's also a style blogger. ua-cam.com/channels/zC9E3yXJoBSBfUKpDQKw2g.htmlvideos
      muchelleb - Austrailian, she's young but does great mindset, lifestyle motivation, minimalist ontent ua-cam.com/users/muchellebvideos
      Sarah Nourse - financial blogger, investing, saving ua-cam.com/channels/DbGw5fdxTLjRsNnD7_Jwvw.htmlvideos
      The Personal Philosophy Project - No buy content, money, books, podcasts etc. I love her "10 Things To Do On A No Buy Year | Shopping Alternatives" ua-cam.com/video/EmfPePnV21w/v-deo.html

      Alexa Likes ahh thanks so much for all the links and taking the time to narrow down a little bit of each! I will definitely be checking them out ! I’m sure that will help tons :) then I can still watch UA-cam like I enjoy but without the negative shopping influences hehe. And yeah.. Instagram is totally just your best highlights and I know that even though mine may look cool, I definitely have personal struggles that I don’t share with the internet.. but I keep that in mind when looking at anyone’s feed. Also, finding a job where you can grow is CRUCIAL. I had some friends who ended up having to go back to school and changing their career path because they plateaued and couldn’t get any further ..I seriously wish you nothing but the best and looking forward to your future content! I wish more influencers talked about what you did.. thanks for being so open! I’m sure it’s not that easy..

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +1

      @@sarahgeeox Trust me, there's a lot of influencers turning around, anti-hauls are also a thing! If you are very into makeup (brands and all) there are channels oriented towards discouraging makeup purchases (Whitney Hendrick, Samantha March, Hannah Louise Poston
      )! You just have to find the ones that suit your style. Like, personally I love Hana's channel and concepts but I just can't get into her videos - I can't relate to her style of speaking.
      I'm sure there are fashion channels out there that help you rationalize why you shouldn't invest in trends. Most of them are 25+. It helps when they are within our age range, because younger people weren't exposed to the same things we were.
      It's a bit uncomfortable for me to film these, but I'm sure the result will be worthwhile in motivating me to do better for myself later. Wishing you the best of luck too, Sarah!

    Hey Alexa, love this video. I had the same experiences when I did no-buys and low buys for a few months last year: I felt like shopping was sort of "buffer" for me to not feel my negative feelings. Whenever I made myself stop shopping I suddenly had to deal with those. That's why I put myself on a complete no buy this year: to deal with those feelings and to really take a deep dive into those always-wanting-more-cravings and what's actually behind this all. Since you said you're accepting requests: I would love for you to film a video reflecting more on this topic of what function you found out shopping for clothes and makeup had for you mentally and what came up and what other ways you found to be helpful to deal with those feelings and insecurities! Hope that wasn't too long! See you on instagram :) X

    Working from home triggers my online overspending. I'm a divorced 26 y.o. toddler mom. I moved back home during the pandemic after six years away so I don't have friends in this city outside of work and the gym. I got really lucky to find a job I love with lots of amazing coworkers whom I talk to outside of business hours but I run a tight schedule that doesn't allow for much social time (bc I have to care for my lil man and I'm applying to law school so I can give him a better future). Because of that work is where I'm social, my commute is my me time. When everything gets shutdown I feel like I need to reward myself because I'm lonely and understimulated. I tell myself I saved on gas so I deserve it but I always go a little overboard and it's kinda turned into a bad habit with all these covid scares. I don't know if anybody can relate.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  2 роки тому +1

      Wow, you have a lot on your plate but such great goals to strive for and great accomplishments under your belt! All of these sacrifices you are making now will grately benefit you and your son's future.
      This video was filmed a long while ago, and so much has changed for me - singlehood, new job working from home, family illness, lifestyle changes and weightloss... etc. It has taught me that habits that do not benefit my future have no place in my life.
      ( *my two cents, even though you didn't ask* ) Break the cycle for your son because money mindsets are transferable between generations. Shift your mind set about the money you've saved on gas, use it for something that benefits your future. I promise you, it feels so much better than shopping. You deserve peace and overspending leads to the opposite.

      @@AlexaLikes wow tysmm for reading and replying in such depth💗💗 I've kinda been binging on your videos about overspending (and shitty dating app experiences lol) throughout this weekend. But I feel like yours are the most honest, entertaining, and relatable by far. I feel like covid has done a number on a lot of people emotionally in much more impactful ways than on me, but I definitely have a tendency to a) stress shop skincare products and b) overcompensate for my guilt about my son having an atypical family situation by buying him expensive brand name clothes. And it's not even for him it's for other folks and how they view him and my parenting since I'm on the younger side. I want to be taken seriously and look worthy not like I'm masquerading. Ughh end rant before I go too far. But thank you fr!!
