TOXIC emotional shopping cycle & DEBT (ex-beauty influencer story)

  • Blogging myself into debt!? This is a storytime about going into debt, financial tips, and explaining why influencers go broke. This is my storytime about youtube beauty blogging getting into debt after my shopping addiction. It's also an origin story to my emotional spending.
    This might be the most vulnerable video I've ever filmed, so please be respectful and kind. I accept responsibility for my mistakes, I don't blame the community or my upbringing because it was up to me to unlearn and confront these behaviours.
    Fortunately, my debt is just under 20K, that doesn't take away the guilt I have about letting a lot of my money slip through my fingers with careless spending.

    ABOUT ME:🌿
    I’m Alexa, a reformed shopaholic and beauty guru on UA-cam since 2010. On my channel you'll find my journey towards slow living and productivity mindset. I’ve been on a beauty low/no-buy since 2019 and do use-up projects (i.e. project pan). If you have an itch to spend, I’ll do my best to convince you to keep your money! Thumbs up for that.

    SAME SAME SAME! This is my story. One thing I learned last year is that 1. I need to play in the items I own (makeup and clothing) to make sure I know what I have so I dont feel the need to shop. 2. for makeup, becoming an "expert" in a particular makeup item and using it up fulfills me a lot more than having a bunch of different stuff that I never use up. I learned that I often by based on suggestion, then keep buying because a specific item doesnt work the way I want...when really it COULD work how I want if I just took the time to learn it and keep using it...so yea...I am on a no buy this year, only repurchasing the items I need (primer, mascara, brows, stuff I love and use up).

    I. Love. This. This year I want to do the same! Get myself out of debt & only focus on ‘purchases’ that are necessary in nature! If you make a ‘frugal without being cheap’ series of videos this year, IM HERE FOR IT. bc I need inspo and I think all of us have to help one another out on this 2020 journey of saving them bucks 🙈🙈

      I'm afraid I've been pretty cheap lately! I've been on a low-buy offline for the past year and all I've talked about are things I already own. Lol I actually will be spending this year, but I want those expenses to be related to physical activity or experiences that I can share with others (other than dinner and drinks). However, I don't know how this is going to play out exactly. I'll definitely be doing updates/vlogs. Thanks for your support, Chelsea!!

    I wish I could hug you because I can relate to your story so much! I did do the ugly cry at the end because I understood everything you said. Your face lit up when you mentioned your project pan 2019, finishing up products is so rewarding indeed! It feels so good to use something up completely! And don't worry, so many of us can relate to wishing we did things sooner but mostly importantly 2020 is going to be EVEN BETTER than 2019 for you! When I took a look at my situation, I can't believe I allowed things to get out of hand the way it did. I feel guilty I didn't wake up sooner but I love this Maya Angelou quote (that has helped me through a lot), "When you know better, you do better". So 2020 will be my 3rd no buy year for makeup + nail polish and I'll probably add clothing to that list as well so I can save even more. I'm so excited I rediscovered you as well and I'm very very happy for all the wonderful things that will be ushered in for you in 2020. I 100% believe in you and you can accomplish every goal you listed

      Thanks so much for your kind words and sharing your experiences, Zenorah! I'm working on releasing the guilt so I can better focus on my goals. It felt very cathartic to record this video. I feel it will help keep me accountable whilst relating to others going through the same thing.
      I'm so glad the panning community exists! I've discovered so many channels covering beauty/fashion without revolving around over-consumption. It's all very exciting to me!
      I used to follow you years back, it wasn't the right timing for me to get into panning. I recently rediscovered you from your collab with Danielle! it's funny how that happens.

      Oh, you're telling me! There are so many releases and brands now that I have trouble differentiating them or even caring to distinguish one from another. In the last decade UA-cam's beauty community has gone from tutorials to new product centric videos - it's too much.

    This is why I think high school should have solid economic curriculum for students in Quebec. RRSPs, savings, loans, etc... we should get that data young to start thinking for the future at an age where we can plan ahead. I actually enrolled in a planning for your retirement class when I was 24 and I do not regret it, all the people there were in their 50s and that is just too late. I have been saving for my retirement since 24. Also stopped buying luxury items new, if I want designer stuff I buy it secondhand and resell it when I no longer use it. It’s possible to live a planned financial life while having fun!

      You are preaching to the choir. We had a useless home-ec class and media studies where we learned NOTHING. Why didn't we have personal finance? Why didn't they teach things about emotional intimacy instead of a week of p-in-v sexual ed? I'm so grateful that I didn't get into luxury handbags or buy a car I wouldn't have afford. I have made mistakes but thankfully they haven't been as grave as others. Good on you for getting your finances together at a younger age! I hope you spread the word!

Back then youtube was only starting out I can only imagine the amount of youtubers or bloggers who are in debt trying to keep up with the joneses, always trying to one-up the next « influencer »

      @@juleslaurence6790 Oh my goodness, The wrost thing is I'm always the frugal one in relationships who says, "let's go to the movies when it's 2 for 1 and I'm carrying snacks n my purse" ... must be a latin thing. My ex was terrible at finances, my current enjoys shopping more than I and is a sucker for uber and eating out. The onus is on me to make the right choices despite what others are doing.
      Also .. years back, the money went straight to clothes and makeup in the hauls - now we're talking equipment too! Starting a channel now has an even bigger price tag because people are dishing out for the best camera, lights and mic before they've even monetized their channel.

    Thanks for talking about this. There is such a stigma about admitting debt. I definitely agree that you learn your spending habits from parents. My mom was frugal because we didn't have a lot growing up and I use to hate it. I wanted to keep up with my peers. I haven't always been great at managing money which is why I think talking about it is so helpful. There is a lot learn from each other because I always think I should be saving more or doing something different.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому

      I hate the stigma. That's why it's so shameful and uncomfortable to talk about. How are you supposed to know anything about it if no one you trust in your personal sphere tells you about it? It's sort of like sex in that way, everyone dabbles in it one way or another but no one wants to talk about it.
      Money is something you get judged on... What you do or don't do with it, how much you have... it's a messy thing. It's so much more relational than just numbers too! Ugh. My mom was only frugal when she went back to school, little did I know she was in debt for years until she sorted it out in my early 20s. I want to break the cycle.

    I think to learn to "live within your means" is a difficult lesson for many. Bad spending habits can start so easily and their potential for harm may not be noticed until it is already a problem. I commend you Alexa for being very open about these kinds of topics.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +2

      I'd want to live somewhat below my means in the long-run. What's crazy is that it's not taught. If you grew up in a impoverished family, you think living pay-to-pay is okay. Now we have lenders who have no problem signing you up for loans etc... that shouldn't happen. Cars are another money pit. Buy now, pay later is such a messed up culture. Thanks for watching!

I kinda miss the days when I had less makeup but everything was being used and most were favorites without being overwhelmed.Ive been really trying to change I unsubscribe from most beauty boxes and just left two but might actually just leave 1.I look forward to your new content perhaps it motivates me more.

    You don’t need to buy new makeup just use what you have for tutorials. Also loved watching your story time videos. I have the same addiction. My one and only new year resolution is to stop shopping. Don’t know how long it will last as I have tried before and failed many times. But UA-cam does make you buy makeup so it’s good to see videos like this it makes me realise and helps me to convince myself for a while I should stop.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +1

      Exactly, I've done all of my last reviews the last year (except 3*) with products that I didn't buy this year or that were from PR. I'm not sure I enjoy filming tutorials per say. They aren't as needed any more since there are plenty of expert MUAs on UA-cam. I was more trial/review based with the occasional get ready with me for fun or how to do something in particular type videos. Right now, I'm pretty into project panning.
      You know what's helped me with low-buy in 2019 and what will help me succeed this year? A couple of things, decluttering (I read Marie Kondo in 2018) and channels like The Personal Philosophy Project by Cinzia. Cinzia did a video called what to do when you are bored with a list of things to do and NOT spend money. Maybe check them out and see how it goes! You never know ☺

    Loved hearing your backstory. It's wild how easily we can slip into the habit of shopping for all of the latest things. I think everyone is REALLY backing away from it now. I know I certainly want FAR less intake happening. I love using up stuff, but by god it's near impossible now!

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому

      It is wild! I can't remember the last time I bought makeup or skincare because I completely ran out of one category of beauty product. I was always buying things that were on sale or thinking, "I better hold onto that just in case" and essentially hoarding. I understand the excitement of new launches, wanting to try something different and having a collection. I don't want a large collection any more. It's going to take me a while to get there, maybe 3-4 years I suspect.
      Sometimes, I can't tell if people are buying less or companies are making much more, but it seems like everything goes on promotion now and often!

    Hi again, leaving another comment. I loved this video, Alexa. You were so honest, real, and brave. I don’t have a mountain of debt but I do spend way more than I should on beauty stuff. I have to say that before watching UA-cam beauty videos, which I discovered in 2013, partly led to my increased spending. I’m planning on not spending anything close to what I did before, in 2020. I also think that all these points systems that Ulta, Sephora, etc, feed on consumerism in the beauty milieu. But I’ve noticed that every so often they raise the price point on their tiers which makes me so angry. So here’s to a 2020 with less spending and a fatter bank account! You deserve more subscribers because you’re not out there touting how much we need to buy this thing and that palette. Thank you and Happy New Year 🎊. Oh, and love all the pictures you inserted, especially of your mom. What a hottie! Oh, and you asked for suggestions. Maybe this one won’t be a crowd pleaser but it would be great if you could make a couple about your relationship with your mom and how it’s changed since you were a kid

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +1

      The points at sephora at terrible. $100 = 100 points which only buys a perfume sample if you are lucky. That's insanity. Mom is my number one fan - she's an angel. I did a hair tutorial with her ages ago when I hardly knew what to do on UA-cam. I very much wish us all fatter bank accounts in 2020! Cheers and Happy New Year and thanks for the support!

      Thanks, Lesley - watching your journey has been really helpful, by the way! I've definitely realized that I need to put the regret for the money that is gone in the past. I'm taking action to earn more this year and put the money to work. I'm grateful that my debt is small enough that I could very possibly handle it in 12-18 months and start saving for a better future.

    I think the beauty debt HAS TO be more common than we think especially for people starting out now. You started even before I did, but when I started blogging in 2011, there was definitely the urge to buy everything new "because I needed new material to get my blog going", but not like now. With Instagram, the need to buy and have the newest is insane. While I have more makeup/skincare than I could ever need, I have slowed down in the last two years and while I am very fortunate to not have any debt (my dad is a financial planner so the moment I started working in high school saving was a big deal), I always feel like I could save more than I do and not spend. I'm never going to be a minimalist and I know that I will probably be VIB Rouge for as long as the program is around because beauty is where I enjoy spending money, but I've decided that as long as I can save at least a third of my paycheck each month, I'm happy. I think once you start seeing that initial growth in savings/decrease in debt, you will want to do even more for that "savings high"! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +1

      It's VERY common. Makeup aside, the equipment is another HUGE investment. We used to be able to blog with cheap cameras or our cellphones. The industry standard is now a beauty room and a DSLR with lights and backdrops! I don't know if you've watch Samantha March before, she did a video series about spending all her savings on makeup for blogging. There are some fashion bloggers who have opened up about this kind of debt too.
      Having a mentor in or an education in personal finance is a huge privilege. Perhaps if my dad were alive I would have known better - not sure how he was with money as a whole but I'm living and learning. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @JayneLim
      @JayneLim 4 роки тому +1

      @@AlexaLikes I really should stop by more often!
      I can't imagine being a teenager now and wanting everything since advertising is so targeted to younger people. Consumerism is definitely at an all time high. I was indeed very lucky to have my dad be in the finance sector AND be smart about it! I used to think he was just trying to be controlling with my money, but I know the value of it now. It's never too late and I think if you have the discipline to pan 20 products (it's really quite challenging) you can most certainly tackle this!

    You are one of the first beauty you tubers I started watching (mainly bc you are latina like myself). You make great content and it’s so common for this culture to suck you into consumerism. Last year I started watching Hannah Louise Poston and she inspired me to creat a beauty budget. I also read Mari Kondos book as well. I still love makeup and enjoy it so much, and a budget doesn’t make me feel limited. I have a real savings and pay my debts with progress. You are going to discover a lot about yourself during the no buy and it’s going to make you a stronger, more aware person! Consumerism is a crazy place. You got this!

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 роки тому +2

      I saw Hannah and I love the ideas behind her videos, but I just couldn't get into them 😅. It might be a communication miss-match. I wish there were more people of color or just non-white people making videos about finance - have you noticed the lack of diversity there!?
      Anyway, I found Aja Dang, Style Apotheca, Stacy Flowers, Samantha March and others I could watch...
      Fortunately, last year was a low-buy. It was SO eye-opening. I purchsed 5 makeup items in total and I'm confident about not feeling the need for makeup/clothes. Now I'm more concerned with curbing my eating out and getting out of debt! I need to start budgeting too!
      Thansk for your insight! I'm so happy others are working through it too!

      Alexa Likes I have noticed some lack of POC within that topic and I wonder if it’s because of the algorithm not promoting them or if it’s bc of there not being any content of the sort. Your story of your mom immigrating from Honduras is very familiar to mine as well, specifically how consumerism is strong among the Latino community. I’m working on making a video series of how my low buy Year was so effective and eye opening. Im working towards creating a channel to post such related items. I can’t wait to follow you through this portion of tour journey in 2020!

    Oh Alexa! We all pick up things from our parents. In my case... when I was a little girl my dad was far too tight with the money! I remember in secondary school walking n all then shops thinking 🤔 you know what? Ill buy all sort of pretty things for myself one day. It was difficult to save up I had to starve myself. Then I meet an irish man so came to Europe and because he was good to me i got addicted to shopping. Now we divorced and yes... i hate myself for not saving 😣 BUT the main thing is we learned and that what life’s about ?? 🤷🏽‍♀️ thanks for sharing babe ❤️❤️

      Oh yeah. Man, that's quiet the story. Mom sort of had a similar situation happen. When she came to Canada and got married. She didn't have to worry about money, but her childhood was economically difficult.
      We've had so many discussions on the matter and have gotten better - because we both had compulsive shopping behaviours.

      I received so much of it from PR up until 2017. PR has scaled back to focus on instagramers with 10K in the lifestyle and fashion niche - they also send much less which I appreciate so much. That's a whole other topic for a video I'm planning in the future.

I did buy "pay later" and then started in 2019 see that I have more then 400 € to pay off.. since then I started to do low buy and even panning but I still buyed.. so I decided last month to go on total no buy.. I have now almost 300€ to pay off. For me is that much becouse i dont go to work i needed to say it my husband that he can give me every month some money to pay this off.. I did already declutter give away and sell some stuff but its not enough. It will be hard to keep no buy.. but.. I want to go through till the end of year and see how everything will change. I think it's brave you share the hard parts. However, you should also address the underlieing issues which kept you addicted to first clothes shopping and then beauty shopping. Apart from the pressure to buy, usually there are also personal unmet emotsional needs or unresolved trauma underneath which fuels buying items we do not need. It's the good emotions you get from items, it's the attention you get, it's the ritual and certainty that it gives you, as opposed to complicated human relationships and undefined life situations. I also sense loneliness. You do not want the items, you want people in your life to talk to, that's probably what's underneath the blogging as well. You crave for human connections and if it's strong enough, and the needs have been unmet since childhood, the loneliness can influence unwise financial decisions.

    • @AlexaLikes
      @AlexaLikes  4 місяці тому

      I talk about these things in other videos dated years back related to unpacking shopping addiction and have since overcome financial issues. Loneliness is pretty natural in human existence, especially when both your parents pass away untimely. It's much better to just accept them than combat with impulsive behaviors. However, video blogging is my passion and nothing to do with it, I've been making videos since childhood before posting anything to the internet. It even dictated my choice in my university degree.
