Here's a sturdy, folding sawhorse that won't take up much storage space. You can build one with two 2x4s, a scrap of plywood for the shelf. and a 3/4" dowel.

I've seen many variations of folding horses, but what I like about this one - besides its simplicity - is the folding SHELF keeps the legs from sliding outward OR inward if bumped or jostled, whereas the "strap" designs simply keep them from moving outward, along with the added bonus of somewhere to put the tool(s) you're working with on. Thanks Steve!
THIS IS IT. Finally a good steady simple and effective saw horse that I can actually make with the scrap wood I have at home. Thank you so much!!
So easy, so sturdy! By far the best foldable saw horse vid I’ve seen on UA-cam and I’ve seen dozens. Can tell right away every part of it besides serving its purpose, also compliments the whole project to keep it squared. Thank you
This design worked out really well for me. As a beginner, most of my time has gone into building shop stuff - french cleat storage, stands for my drill press and bandsaw, etc. So I recently upgraded from a portable jobsite table saw to a very nice used contractor table saw. Working in a small garage, I needed an outfeed table that would store against the wall when not in use. I built Steve's sawhorses, but taller - about 34". With some shop made height adjusters, these work perfectly as support for my outfeed table, which is basically a chunk of baltic birch plywood. Quick setup and breakdown, stores in a small space.
I picked Steve's design because it's simple, clever, and works great. Thanks Ramsey.
You know, Steve, I'm real glad you've been making great helpful videos for so long. You've given us all an archive of brilliance!
I just wanted to say a big thanks for this video and instructions. I'm a steel kind of guy and needed some sawhorses. I showed this to my father in law who loves wood working and he was easily able to knock me up a set. They are really sturdy and should last me a long time.
Your enthusiasm alone is uplifting. I enjoy your videos and as a new woodworker it makes me feel like doing something. Thanks.
Best overall sawhorse design, IMHO. Folding, sturdy, inexpensive, shelf, easy to make. Love it!
It's great that you have added captions to videos Steve, especially for people who do not speak English. I love your projects. Greetings from Argentina.
I just built these as my first wood working project. Not everything squared up perfectly, but I'm pretty pleased with myself. Thx for all your videos
Great design Steve! Very simple and extremely functional.
Regards,
Bob
I just wanted to stop on by and say that I finally built these sawhorse's this weekend... best sawhorses I have ever used. I will add though I added my brace just under the dowel rods that the shelf latches onto seem to work great. Thanks Steve keep up the great work.
Thanks for the tutorial Steve. This handywoman doesn't have all of your fancy tools, but I think with what I have I can make it work. I have several projects that I am trying to get done and having a couple good saw horses is first on this particular "to do" list.
I just got done making these saw horses. I am so tired of buying junk saw horses at the hardware store. I am very pleased at how easy and sturdy these were to build. Thanks for the great video
These are great saw horses. I added some half-lap joints as found on Brian Taylor's channel. Also, (maybe an overkill) but I used oak wood to make the 1x2 pivoting hooks for the shelf. I did this after one of my sawhorses fell over (while folded) and the "hooked" end of the 1x2 broke. The oak wood is seemingly stronger. I also participated in "The Weekend Woodworking Class" and really enjoyed it. Still have a few projects to complete, but I will. Thanks for the ideas you put on UA-cam Steve...
0:53 Ur Matthias "jump" test gets me every time 🤣💕👍
Lots of talent there Steve. I think that when most people build a saw horse they keep them so simple that they would never work as well as yours. Thanks!
Once again you saved the day! I´ve been searching high and low for some really good folding sawhorse plans. Found a few, including 3 plans of my own but none of them were as good as yours! Great job! Thanks! I have about 20 OSB boards in the garage so I´ll be using that instead of plywood
That's a fast project and a good design with minimal cost. Now you'll have to build one of the saw horse storage racks that April Wilkerson put together.
I built these today. Exactly as your pdf plans said and they turned out awesome!! Thanks for posting this!!
You are basically my hero right now. I was just about to go out and buy some metal saw horses just for the fact they fold up but I really prefer wood! Perfect timing for this video!
Excelent answer to keep the sawhorse in the storage of my shop. Thank you a lot.
I make a set of sawhorses today. Modified this plan a little bit and got a sturdy set of saw horses!
Very efficient and simple design! Thank you for sharing, Steve!
I do find genuine value in just watching your videos! Keep up the great work! Jacob
That's not much of a running leap. You can do better!
Yeah but he didn't even put any pillows underneath it!
this will be the famous matthias wandel table test
Hey, at least he wears 'ear protection'...!
As soon as I saw him do that I thought of you. And this test will be how you are known to the wood working community! Haha
You are one of running leap to test for new built thing...:)
The truth that your video are very easy to understand and ease to esplicarlos God Bless you and continue to give you grace to more video like these ..
Few Matthias Wendel critics here!
He, as is Steve is just making a living.
I watch both of them and enjoy both of them very much.
I'm a professional carpenter but learn a lot from them both.
Great Ideas Steve. Thank you.
As always, simply awesome, thanks for the idea Steve.
You're a genius! This is perfect for small spaces as a woodshop in an apartment. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Steve - very articulate and descriptive in your process. Very jealous of your setup.
Fantastic! For those of us with small shops, space is at a premium. Thanks Steve.
Steve, thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge with us! Great video for making a set of easy to build saw horses. I going to build myself a set this week. Your videos have given me the courage to try new things that I wouldn’t have never tried before. Thanks again!
I just got around to building these. They turned out nice and solid. I added the 1x2 reinforcement strip at the top and the bottom to keep the legs from spreading. The biggest problem was setting the depth of the pocket hole drill. My first try left no shoulder for the pocket head screw to tighten against. Once I got that set right everything else went smooth. I really enjoy your projects, even I can make them.
Is it just me or is the way that piece of lumber falls at 1:09 just seem sort of majestic?
Hi Steve
I made a set of these after looking around on the net and coming to the conclusion that this looked like a very efficient, sturdy and simple design. After making them I am extremely pleased with them Thx for the drawings.
Regards
Nice!
Watching the intros you make are always the highlight of my Friday's, keep up the good work!
Made these. Excellent design and the plans were very clear. I have made more of your designs than those of anyone else. Thank you.
I love these. So simple and straight to the point.
Nice job Steve! I took both of your on line courses, you do a great job teaching stuff
Nice work as always Steve, thank you!
you're smart my friend. you give me hope
I built these for myself and I love them. I keep them in the shed and use them for any project I want to do outside. They save me from having to cart my Workmate up and down the basement steps. Just add a couple of clamps and a MDF board for a top...
loved the dowel rod shelf idea, going to apply it to my regular sawhorse w/ bracket.
Great project Steve, thanks for sharing
love this design!!! great job! thank you!
Brilliant, Steve. Thanks for this video.
the folding design is genius, easy but sturdy! Thanks for sharing!
Great Job!! Next time I need a set i will make these!!
Thanks Steve!
Excellent. I'm so glad I found your channel.
not just a hero but a champion....thanks guy....will be my next project
Well Done! Finally someone provides a common sense design!
As always an excellent video making something all woodworkers need.
Great project and I especialy liked the shelf option you added!
I made two of them. thanks for the walk through!
Excellent design thank you for sharing.
Built one today! Super easy and I had a lot of fun. Thanks!!
THANK YOU STEVE, YOU ARE THE BEST CARPENTER.
you and matthias are so funny in the way that you always implicitly make fun of each other, keep it up lol
I built a set of these. the pocket hole jig made incredibly strong joints. I had no idea it would clamp those legs on as tightly as it did, and the horses are very stable, and love tbatcthey fold up out of the way.
Thanks Steve.
Your projects are awesome 😊
De longe a mais simples e eficiente dos cavaletes dobráveis que já vi ! Excellent!
These are excellent! I will definitely be making a pair sometime soon. Thanks for this, and all your videos!
Coolest thing I seen in the video? That pickup!!
nice and simple but so effective. always a pleasure to watch . thanks
Definitely going to build a couple of the Sawhorses . Great video
Steve, thanks for the ideas i had my 4th saw horse not happy this one looks very simple and easy
Thanks for the show I love to watch. Trying to make these horses for my shop
Love this new version
Used your design to make my own. Work great, Thanks. Really enjoy your videos
Just built a set of these per your video for my brother in law with all reclaimed materials and I really like the design and plan on making another set for myself with better parts but great design thank you!
I just finished my first set of your saw horses.. I did replace the wooden dowels with 5/16 lag bolts. Even with the mistakes and adjustments these are the sturdiest saw horses I have ever seen or used. Rock solid don't cover it.. More than rock solid.
This is a really useful project. Thanks for the video and the plans.
Nice one Steve
I will make them for my self - I will just add bong screw from the top -between pocket screws-and cover with a dowel
Thanks for tip
Good Luck
Thanks for the Demo. I will make a pair for myself. I like your design.
Thanks Steve, as always great video
Great video Steve:
Thanks for sharing. Regards Harry
Very clever !! Like the new design.
folding design is good for ANY size shop big or small
Fantastic project Steve , I will be using it to make some oak trestles for a medieval table just going to replace the pocket screws with dowel joints and may go for leather as a hinge .
I predict at some point in the future that shelf is going to make it look like a handy step ladder and then you'll find out how strong it really is.
I'd toss in a brace going lengthwise
Josh Clark Same here. I was wondering why he didn't do that.
*****
Awesome! i have no tools yet but im subscribing to you now for future builds. this should be one of my first.
*****
also i meant a brace for the plywood "shelf" depending on what you store there that might help
+krtwood It's made with pocket screws, we know how strong it really is....
Love your stuff Steve. I could probably make these even with my Heath Robinson set up! Oh, for a workshop big enough to turn round in!
Excellent design.
They are excellent!! Their the best saw horse's I've ever seen... Cheers...
Well done again Steve. Thank you for your videos. Cheers from the Chilean Patagonia. Coyhaique.
Nicely edited, simple and sweet project, I like it.
I'm building these this weekend!
A VERY NICE SOLUTION, TO USE/STORAGE TOOLS WHILE WORKING AT ANY PROJECT. COOL MAN...
Just made a couple, they work great! Thanks Steve.
I'd be tempted to put a handle hole on the movable side of the shelf just for a visual aid to save a few seconds when packing up.
Gotta love the Wandel Leap™!
Very nice! They look good-n-sturdy and even look like they'll take up less space than my Dad's stacking horses!
I have watched many other woodworking idea videos and I think yours are suit the best one for me.
Very nice
Great project, thank you
Thanks for all of the inspiration Steve, I have been a sub for a long time and I just like your style. I am going to get busy on a pair of sawhorses. I had been thinking of something along that line already but you just made it look easy so here goes!
Looks a great idea, great video as always
What a great project.
I make all your saw horse designs. they're awesome and so are you
