The first half of the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.
Hi. As an old shop teacher, may I suggest a couple of easy improvements? 1) Don't glue down the top board; this way if you run your saw through it you can remove and replace it. Knowing that it's easily replaceable means you can use it as a sacrificial piece of wood. 2) Attach the top piece with brass screws; this way if you run your saw into a screw you don't damage your saw blade since brass is soft. Because brass is soft, after pre-drilling your pilot hole drive a steel screw the same size as your brass screws into the wood to cut the threads, then remove the steel screw and install the brass screws. 3) Instead of the 2x2 and dowel to lock the horse open, substitute a piece of 3/4" plywood with a notch cut into it that will latch onto the cross bar to secure the horse in the open position.
Scott, great suggetsion. Question: if you screw down a top board as you suggest, and it gets sacrificed/replaced multiple times wouldn't taking out / putting in screws over and over round out the trheads? Is there a way to attach with bolts or other means? Thanks!

Pivoting off this idea, here's an alternative that I've now implemented:
1. Glue a 2x4 and 2x6 flat together, with one of the edges flush. The 2x4 is the top and 2x6 the "base" of this setup.
2. Drill 1.5" deep holes into the top (2x4) centered on the 2x6 at ~4 locations.
3. Screw the 2x4 / 2x6 piece to the sawhorse base through the holes in #2.
4. Drill a few holes most of the way through the 2x4 / 2x6 from the top. Glue dowels into these. This ensures a very strong connection between these two top boards.
I've now made 2 sawhorses like this. It's really nice to have the "shelf" on the 2x6 where I can clamp something to both the 2x4 and 2x6 in different directions. No issues after several projects with these, and they seem like they'll last several years before I need to replace the top 2 pieces.
@@philippeb4972 You could use screw inserts and bolts if you want to go to the trouble, but I don't think there's a rule that says you need to use the same holes. Even if you do and they become stripped, drill out the holes to accommodate a dowel, glue it in and re-drill for screws. Also remember this is a saw horse, not an heirloom tool. :-)
How about put wood dowels glued to the top piece and drill the bottom hole s little smaller and pound them in for tight fit but can pound them out

Awesome! I built a pair of these for my 12 ft. boat for winter storage which also covers the outside Air Conditioner. Made them 48" wide with a 60" wide top and also a little taller, 32" legs! Very good vid! Thank you!
Great build. Looks super sturdy. Only suggestion I have, add a top cap to the top of the sawhorses, so you have a sacrificial layer that can be replaced easily.

I'm building a 12x16 shed and needed something to cut my wood on. I made one but it was too tall so I improvised and made it work . However, now I can make a better one after watching you make yours. It's my first wood project and being a female attempting this with only youtube as my teacher and the Holy Spirit as my strength, I'd say I'm doing pretty well right now. I am about 1/2 way done and I am really excited to see it completed. Thank you for this video.

For those hinges, get some vix self centering bits (originals, not clones) and it changes the hinge game. A must have for doors imho. Jorgenson, please come back to USA!

If you did build some, did screwing the hinges opposite each other on the 2” runner, cause any issues with the screws running into each other?
Also, did the barrel of the hinge interfere with attaching the top plate? To me it looks like they’d create a void between the runner and the top plate.

I saw your video and you motivated me to build 4 of these. I hated the idea of needing more saw horses but spending ~$10 to buy one that wouldn't last. This motivates me to build my own and having something that will last for a much longer time. So, don't listen to the critical people....they're bitter and think it will make them feel better to put someone as low as they feel themselves....Stay positive. Keep encouraging people with your thoughts, what works for you, and great ideas. You're doing great!
I’m going to build a set of three to support my boat next winter while I restore it. So I will make mine kind of short as high as my trailer or slightly taller.

I've always found that the best thing to have while building sawhorses, are sawhorses.
Kinda like it's nice to have a work bench when building a work bench...

Build a fixed base with locking castors for each sawhorse that these can sit on, and a removable top for a work surface and BAM, mobile and modular dual purpose work table.

That'll work... I've been needing to make new saw horses myself but how to lock them open was my issue... I never thought of a dowel pin, i've been stuck on two piece folding bar style... Brilliant!!!

I used those flimsy sawhorses ONCE and sold them and got real ones. Space is the big issue. These look good tho!

It’s a brilliant design. I made a couple of folding saw horses last year for general use but I like your locking arm mechanism. It’s simple but eggy. 👍👍👍
Pretty good design. There are two changes I would make, tho. I would use heavier duty hinges. (I happen to have a small box full of used man door hinges in my shop) I would also make a small change to the spreader bar. It would hook from the side, onto a lag bolt. Other than that. Well done and very useful.

I changed to these from a set of folding saw horses I built last year from old pallet wood. Just a bit shorter so I can add "rollers" for an out feed for my table saw. Mine have two holes for dowels in the top so I can also add a butcher block style top to turn them into a portable workbench. Great idea and LUV the hair.

Timely! I just sawed through the top of my plastic ones at the hinge during my last project (fixing the section of my garage wall that dissolved).
Perhaps glue and dowel the tops down rather than screw, that way you will still have a sharp saw to build the replacement saw horses :-) I try to be super careful not to cut the horse but they still seem to get the odd nick.

This was just a cut and paste, so some parts may not be applicable to you. Just hoping someone actually replies.
@@charlesascott661 good morning Charles, Yes I did build these and my second and third sets were built for my Son in Law my Son went better and look more like the plans show. I had no trouble with the screws running into one another. The barrel of the hinge on both sides had to be adjusted so that it did not interfere with the top plate. Your concern is correct and you need to adjust for that. A friend made a set and used a piece of plywood to be the hinge that held them in place when extended and became a shelf that would be useful. I really like these saw horses and use them frequently even if my first set doesn't look as pretty as it should. They are still bull strong.

I ended up buying everything and after actually getting my hands on the hinges, I figure I’ll just attach the opposite sides of the hinges to each side of the runner. I hadn’t clicked onto the fact that being a non-mortise hinge, the holes on the two sides don’t line up like standard hinges.

I'm getting ready to refurbish a small sailboat and have been looking around for sawhorse ideas (for to set the boat upon it... them). I have been looking for a fold up saw horse video. I bought those plastic ones like you kicked at the beginning of the video... my dog got wrapped around it and it toppled over and broke... so I love it. I will be taking mine in my RV when not in use at home to support my chuck box, my outdoor kitchen. I rather cook outside most of the time than in my RV kitchen.

I must say this is perhaps one of the best folding sawhorses that are truly HD grade. @@charlesascott661 Yes I made them over a year ago and turned out well. As I did not remember what you are asking, I looked at it again and think I know what is your concern. Yes, you do run into the issue of the screws from the two hinges on the opposite sides can interfering. I must have run into this as well but I used only a 3/4"long but #10 wood screws. These are shorter but thicker screws that don't run into each other. They have held up very well as the resting force is mostly on the pivot of the hinge and the bevel of the legs supporting the runner. Alternatively, you could offset the hinges from either side slightly and they should work fine as the folding action only requires that they are in line on their own side of the runner. Hope this is clear and helps

Great idea. I’ve been thinking of building a big potting bench that would take up the whole end of our carport but this may be handier, just throw a piece of plywood on them when I need a large horizontal surface and then remove it and have the sawhorses handy for smaller projects, too. Thanks!

I'm surprised you are wearing your Dimond wedding ring. My wife was helping me one time and her left hand got pinched and it bent her ring. Had to almost cat it off. Will not wear her rings when Helping me any more. Could have lost her finger. Becarful with your rings. Great Video.

Stanley Keith. You know that might be the reason for silicone wedding bands that I’ve seen. The initial impression was who’d want to wear something cheap like that? But then, it would sure give away and save your hand in a situation like you were describing.

Completely different scenario but when I was in college studying mechanics, my tutor told me about an old colleague of his that accidentally shorted out a car battery with his wedding ring, then when he pulled his hand away it basically de-gloved his ring finger leaving just bone because the ring got so hot! Not sure how true the story was but this reminded me of it, rings can really get in the way! 🤣
Good job on your build here, I wouldn't worry or put much thought into what people say or the advice you receive on here...most are subjecting you solely cause you're a goodlooking chick and you're aren't "supposed" to be able to do these kinds of things. There are a lot of insecure a-holes on here as I am sure you've gathered by now lol. Keep doing things that inspire the others that aren't supposed to be able to do things like this too, it's good stuff. 1st project I did when I started my home shop was to build sawhorses. Can't do much framing without them. These look heavy compared to other designs I've used. As I've aged, weight and dual use became important. Now my favorite pair of horses are my 32 gallon plastic trash cans. Flip one over for chop saw or a small table top. Leave one upright to hold the scrap pieces you'd need to pick up later. When paired upright they also support both sides of the cut so the cutoff piece doesn't need to be held. Also useful between projects for their stated utility.
That 25 degree on the bottom will set the saw horse flat to the ground ,more surface area on ground more stable they become.I love your folding idea. 9:38

Good video w/ great ideas. I should build a couple of these. I already have 4 metal collapsible sawhorses which were indispensable building our house & eventually our shop. I added so 2x6” w/ a 2x4 sacrificial top........functional but heavy & awkward. Yours looks lighter, more functual & still be stable. I also love the add-on tops. The tops can be extended up. I’m 6’4”........bringing the work surface up to me is also an advantage. Thank you
One thing I like about female woodworkers is that your English is generally better and easier to understand than the jargon a lot of men use. You come across as a lot humbler than the guys who naturally seem to take the know-it-all approach to whatever we'rwe're talking about. I'm probably sounding like a know-it-all right now. As i was moving my "Delux" plastic saw horses outside I thought of this very idea,,,But a little different , I have built saw horses on job sites for yrs using junk lumber The only difference between my idea and yours is,,,I was using chains to hold the legs instead of your wood brackets and 1 by material instead of your 2x4 cross peices

That's an excellent idea. I use the Rigid runoff stands, but something sturdier and larger would be nice for bigger material.

I use those Same gate latches to lock my step ladder closed when I'm carrying it. I also added a handle which I positioned so the ladder is balanced and I can just carry it like a suitcase. That project took about 5 minutes and cost me about $6.00 . And I always get compliments on it.

i think the only thing i'd change is...instead of using a wood dowel for the pin, i'd use a metal rod. you can use a small amount epoxy to hold it in. that way, much lower chance it'll break. other than that, cool design.
Probably means having to cut a section of rod to proper length, which means carrying a hacksaw, and a file to smooth the cut edge, thus doubling the needed tools. Use a hardwood dowel.
Same. I Would even use a lag bolt and then cut the head of the bolt off with a grinder and smooth it over. going to be much sturdier.
Replace the 2x2 with chains, then you won't have to do anything.

I was yellin' at the screen in the first 45 seconds when she had the speed square backwards while using it as her straight edge. Flip it so the "t" edge is twds yourself, that way it catches on the board edge and you're not fighting to keep it along the back edge. Just sayin'.
Nope, the way she had it works great, gives a bit of leading edge to start the saw and if you have any grip at all you can hold it tight while sawing.

Hi...I'm from Trinidad West Indies...i absolutely love it...I'll be building about 2 pairs for my shop. I had the stable ones but storage was always a BIG problem.
