Good idea. I would drill a slightly larger hole to a depth of 1/8" - 3/16" first, then switch to the smaller spade bit. The washer and screw will be flush with the door, and also prevent rubbing if the door has very little clearance at the top.

+Ben Braunstein Could ignore the wire entirely and use a small magnet when retrieving the tube. Then nothing would be hanging from the top of the door at all.

I do not using string, I am using magnets to pick up this stash-tube.
Another hiding place that is a little harder to get to is behind light switches at interior walls. DO NOT wrap the stuff in foil. It could make contact with a screw at the side of the switch, and you could be electrocuted. For even more storage, (if you have plastic service boxes) make sure the breaker supplying power to the switch is off, then cut out the side of the box. The stuff can be put into a cloth or PVC bag with a piece of twine. tie the other end of the twine to the switch frame, and let the bag go into the wall. NOTE: this is NOT for hiding drugs, because drug sniffing dogs will still detect them through the drywall.

I feel I have seen this someplace else already. Also, you should put that near the hinge side of the door so the tube does not rattle when you open and close the door.
Now this is the KipKay I love taking random stuff from around the house and making cool things with it, none of this by my kit with all of these things and you too can make this. This is awesome
It's better to counter sink the washer (and screw) into the door sky it's snug and doesn't stick out, also instead of a wire just use a magnet to lift it from the screw

Imagine going to kipkays house and finding all sorts of treasure in random places. Wouldn't be surprised if someone used his pizza cutter and a 24k gold ring just falls out of nowhere
I've done this myself in the past. But having it further from the hinge allows it to rattle when opening and closing the door. Installing it closer to the hinges eliminates it from rattling
it's great and all, but my neighborhood is notorious for its door theives.

Using such tricks as these to hide items, "improvised secreting of an item" like behind an outlet plate, inside a wall/floor register, curtain rod tube, door jamb tube etc. is known in "the biz" (military, C.I.A., whatever) as a "slick." Improvised hide-outs are... "Slicks."

The UA-cam channel Make: showed how to make a similar project, but instead of a string to pull it out of the door, they put a magnet under the lid so that it was flush with the door, and to pull it out, you would use a magnet.
Tearing that bill in half would make the lower classes rich just through deflation.

Would have to make sure the screw you use doesn't stick out of the top enough to rub into the trim. You'd probably be better off with a flat head rather than a rounded one.
+Urahara1001 in the united states the doors tend to have a gap on the top and bottom so you wouldn't have to worry about it.

Someone else did this better; used cigar tube and sunk the washer part to sit flush with door top. Also used magnet to pull up, and installed close to hinge to keep it from rattling when door is use.
wouldn't a solid wood door be better?
If you accidentally pull the top off, the tube will fall into the door and you gotta break the door to get it back out.
If the door is solid wood, you just have a hole with whatever depth you drilled.
