@@screwsnutsandbolts old school, put the hose in a container with the hose below the fluid in the container, crack the bleed nipple, and it is so much easier replace fluid as necessary.

could you loosen the xerxe fitting on the caliper a put a hose on it to drain safely, to reduce back pressure on the screw?
Yes you can open the bleed valve and drain the fluid as you reset the piston. Just be careful not to get any air in the system.
