    Hell yes. Jimmy C spitting facts about voigtlander. Sold my leica lenses for the voigtlander lineup for commercial photography and never looked back. Banked the cash and put it towards feeding my family. The 28, 35 ultrons and the 50 apo lanthar are the smartest thing I did for myself. Proud to be a leica shooter, but also proud to be a smart leica shooter. Keep it real Jimmy and keep making sick content. Peace

    Thanks for another thoughtful review Jimmy. The CV's are great. I have the 50 f1.2 Nokton and 21mm f3.5 CS and am considering the 28 Ultron and 90 f2.8 as I transition from the M10 to M11. They will do well on the SL2 too I suspect. Keep your reviews coming.

    Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! They are quite excellent, very informative and straight to the point. I just ordered the 35 f/1.5 Nokton in aluminum to pair with my Monochrom. It looks like a very compelling lens if you consider the trade offs between size and performance. Very pleasing rendering from what I can tell. Looking forward to trying it out for myself.

    Well-done and convincing overview with good arguments. Thank you. [PS: I have used both lenses, even including the TTartisan 35 mm f 1.4 and the Summicron... and I came to the same conclusion. Because of its compactness the V. f 1.5 is always on my camera (its + 1 EV compared to the Summicron makes a difference for me).

    I don't normally comment on videos but I have to on this one, thank you for a great, no nonsense comparison! I saw this video today but last night I pulled the trigger on the Voigtlander 35/1.5 Nocton so very timely. I had been eyeing a used Leica 35/1.4 Summilux and yes, I can afford it but the Voigtlander kept calling me. I try to take money out of the decision process to some extent, buy once, cry once. I had read all about the mid frame dip of the Nocton but to be honest, looking at your side by side comparisons, it just does not seem to be that big of a deal in real life. If I am showing a photo to family or others, they are not going to say "nice picture but the mid frame dip ruined it!" The CA would be a much bigger issue for me and I do like the bokeh of the Voigtlander better. I have Leica lenses and they are sublime to use but I also have many Voigtlanders for various formats and I have yet to be disappointed by them, and I love the sunstars the Voigtanders produce. Again, thank you for this video, it was just what I have been looking for, it definitely confirmed my decision!

    I appreciated that you mention about colors…but I have to say that if you are building your personal line up, and you don’t want to mess with postproduction, you have to have this thing in mind. I work with different Leica bodies and I have Leica lensens and even Panasonic lenses on SL system and they will render colors in the same way, on M system maybe because the difficulties of making lenses so small, they work in so different way. On M11 the differences on colors are much more noticeble than the SL2/SL2S, and if you’re using on the same job 2 Ms with 2 different focal lenght built by 2 different manifactures you’ll see that so hard and it could be a problem to match them if you’re not going to put presets on your files. Voigtlander is doing great, I’m with you, but I would suggest that: if your building your lens bag for work on Ms it’s better to have the same lens series from the same manifacture if you want to achieve the same color rendition. And yes, going for the all new Voigtlanders is a good choiche, but mixing Leica and Voigtlander lenses for me is a color rendition problem.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Рік тому +2

      Good point! I’m with you on this one. Even for Leica lenses, the colours are different though due to coating change over the years. I have earlier Leica glasses such as the 35 cron v4 which exhibits a greenish color shift while newer ones like the 50 1.4 asph has a pinkish tone. They’re all very subtle though. Unless you’re doing something professionally otherwise you won’t notice due to change in lighting and scene.

    You say the Vignetting is the only real complaint about the Voigtlander lens, I would bet if you turn off lens correction in camera the 35 FLE you will get much more vignetting on the Leica lens.
    I have a few lenses from Voigtlander, they are good performers, the only part I dislike is the design of the front ring of the lens shade. I would like a flat screw-in option.

    Hi Jimmy, what is your thought on 35mm f1.5 nokton vs ultron 35mm f2.0 ? do they renderly differently at the same aperture ? The nokton mid zone dip doesn't bother me especially after f2.8, and it seems to have more pleasing bokeh to my eyes. May be the ultron has more even sharpness across the frame and more vintage of a look? I know you own both lens :) , would like to hear your advice.

    • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  7 місяців тому

      Bokeh is nice on both lenses, really the rendering is not too different. If I were you the only concern here is 1.5 vs smaller size, whether you prefer the handling of ultron or the nokton. You can’t go wrong with both.

  • @baerv3753

I spent a lot of time looking at this Voigtlander lens, but I don’t know if it is different enough that I feel the need to add it to my collection. • @JimmyCheng
      @JimmyCheng  Рік тому +1

      Have the 2.8 and is getting this lens to try out, will see if I keep it in the end. I do love the sample images Jimmy provided right off the bat. I love saturated colors and punchy contrast and this lens seem to give enough of both, just like my 35mm 2.8 biogon, and this lens seems to be built a lot better than the 35 f2, which I just find ugly haha. So the choice is down to handling and aesthetics in the end

    • @ZachBie
      @ZachBie 8 місяців тому

      @@zimbabwe0 the Zeiss 35/2 is a bit bigger than I would like, and I have researched countless lenses over the years to see what could be a replacement. But in the end I just decided to keep the lens as I can’t find anything really all that different and better. I’ve had the 35/2 since 2016 and it was my first lens for my first M camera. It’s never let me down and is just a well rounded performer at the cost of being a little bit big.
      My assessment from reading reviews online for similar lenses:
      Voigtlander 35/2 is smaller, about the same sharpness, but with busier background rendering.
      Leica 35/2 is smaller, same sharpness, but you have a hood design I don’t like as much and more flare than the Zeiss.

    • @zimbabwe0

      @@ZachBie I've had the Voigtlander f1.5 black paint for a few days and did some testing to find that this lens handles amazingly (buttery smooth, felt more premium than the Leicas I've shot before). Sharpness-wise, I'm surprised to find out that it matches or outperforms the Zeiss 35 f2.8 even at f1.5. Shooting both at f2.8 and f5.6 tells a similar story, with this lens edges the Zeiss slightly in sharpness across the frame (no real difference in real world usage tho). It is ever so slightly brighter and cooler than the Zeiss, but my girlfriend told me that she couldn't tell the images apart just viewing them on a phone. I think I'm gonna sell the Zeiss and keep this lens, since having a very very usable f1.5 is just too good for a lens of this size/price/performance. Also Zeiss' consumer optics seems to have fell into complete neglect while Voigtlander is actively trying to improve their lineups. I didn't think I needed the large aperture but once you have it it's hard to go back haha. Cheers! FYI: I'm someone who enjoys a clean, neutral, and modern rendering and hates lenses that try to be 'classic' just for the sake of it, and I love how this lens renders.

If you try to fix that you alter all mixed colors as well which is not only tidious but also makes the colors look even more unnatural over all.
