- In this video, we're gonna compare the Leica 28mm f1.4 summilux with the Voigtlander 28mm f1.5 Nokton and see which one is the better fast 28mm lens on M mount.
So glad you're still using the Leica MD 262. It`s my only digital camera and don`t see me buying another digital camera ever...!
I have the VL and also the new 35 f1.5. Incredible lenses. I’m hopping for a 50 f1.5 with close focus following this design. Great vid Jimmy
thanks! enjoyed your video immensely as well.
Recent VOIGTLANDERS are absolutely amazing, i have their New Vintage Line 35mm 1.5 Brass lens mounted on my M6 and it is simply OUTSTANDING!
What I really like about the Voigtlaender is that you can buy them in black paint and real chrome for a small premium. Overall an excelent lens, that is very similar to the 35/1.5. Purplefringing can be very pronounced. Excelent review as always
Yeah it’s a shame the purple fringing is quite present. Otherwise it would have been a true winner. But I can’t really complain given its size and price.
Nice comparison and review jimmy 👍📸
Thank you!
I had bought the Voigtlander 28mm 1.5 in the brass version, and it's a very beautiful lens. I arrived at the same conclusions as you. However, I returned it and ultimately opted for the Leica Summicron 28mm F2. Although much more expensive, I prefer the latter as it is smaller and complements my Leica kit. But there's no denying it, the Voigtlander is a banger. It's an exceptional lens with impressive sharpness, and the contrasts are very nicely reproduced. However, the purple fringing at wide open is indeed bothersome.
Interestingly, I've just done the opposite thing. I bought the brass Nokton to replace the Summicron V1. Did you buy the latest version of the Summicron with close focus ability? I admit that the purple fringing of the Nokton is quite annoying but its sharpness and extra stop of brightness at basically the same size of the Summicron are amazing. Not to mention the build quality with the brass version. This is my first time to buy a Voigtlander lens and this really makes me looking forward to waiting for its 28 apo if any.
@@timothyho1138 No, I got the version 11672, which I managed to get at an excellent price brand new. Tbh It was also to have a Leica for the sake of owning another Leica lens in my kit. However, I completely agree that the Voigtlander is exceptional in its construction and performance, and I highly recommend it.
Awesome video Jimmy! Wanted to ask where you get your shutter release button from? Love the look of that.
ah I think I bought it from some artisan in China, forgot where though, that was many many years ago.
Just the video I needed! I’ve got Voigtlander in aluminum and it’s a fantastic lens. I try to convince myself that I should get the 28 lux instead all the time… but I just can’t see how it’s worth all that much more when the value the Voigtlander is providing is exceptional. - great video!
No you absolutely don’t need the lux. This is very typical Voigtlander lens owner’s mentality: what if I’ve got the real deal, a real Leica lens? 9 times out of 10, it won’t be that much better, but it does scratch your itch of owning a Leica glass just because it’s Leica. Enjoying your 28!
Hi, Jimmy like the way you speak and sound. Good job. Fast in getting to the point. May I ask you a favor? Is the Voigtlander 28 Nokton has focus shift issue? This the the part I worry most. Cause previously owning a ver. 7 LLL summicron 35 has focus shift at F4-F5.6.
Not that I’m aware of. All my photos are shot with MD(no live view) and they are all spot on.
Great video Jimmy. I have the Lux and am considering downgrading. Does the Voigtlander vignette more than the Leica equivalent, like their other recent lenses?
Nah I’d say the lux vignette more!
I've been wanting a fast 28mm and got the 7Artisans version awhile back. While I like the look I hated the size and weight. I knew right away I would not like the 28 Lux as it is about the same size as the 7Artisans. I got the 28mm Voigtlander 1.5 at launch and love the size and weight as it is the smallest and lightest fast 28mm out now. Am I spoiled that I want an even smaller fast 28mm? Give me one the size of the 40mm Summicron C. hahahah I know crazy.
haha I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon. But again this is close to perfect!
Great video! How does the 28mm 1.5 Nokton compare to the 28mm F2 Ultron?
well it's like lux vs cron, they are very similar at comparable apertures. Ultron has size advantage. So it's really 1.5 vs smaller size.
Does the Leica also have field curvature like the Voigtlander?
yes it does but they are slightly different. I noticed the summilux has somewhat of a mid-zone dip.
Which might be contributed by field curvature
As there is a 9 year difference in release time, the optical performance of Voigtlander is better because it is the latest lens. If you are not particular about Leica lenses, I think the 28mm F1.5 is a great alternative.
Yeah that could be the case here.
More like 1/6 the price right? Any chances of getting a comparison of the nokton and the thypoch 28mm simera?
I don’t think there will be one after my 35mm review (apparently the manufacturer find it too “frank”)
@@JimmyCheng that’s too bad, heard very good things about the simera too
Good for you Jimmy. If a manufacturer finds you “too frank” it means you’re honest and doing a good job. Love your work.
Jimmy how does the 28 Nokton stack up to the 28 Ultron II? Nice review... Thank you
unfortunately I don’t have the ultron at hand right now. But from my fading memory I’d say they are comparable just like summilux vs Summicron.
@@JimmyCheng I like the rendering of the Ultron, but also like it on the 50mm Nokton II. Thanks
@@mwales2112 the 50mm nokton ii nickel and brass is really sweet, one of my favorite fast 50 for its size.
I have bought a 28 Nokton to replace my 28 Summicron V1. I need to say that it crushes the Summicron... in term of sharpness at least. The Summicron is by no means bad and is basically all-round and optically well-corrected. However, the Nokton is just that excellent in sharpness. Other than pronounced purple fringing and no half stop between F/1.5 and F/2.0 (as it is not a full stop), I really have no complaint on the Nokton. This is my first time to buy Voigtlander lens.
@@timothyho1138 Thanks
Why there is no Thypoch 28 in there? Would love to see the diferences :(
Because the manufacturer wouldn’t send me one after seeing my 35mm Thypoch review. Go figure lol.
Hi Jimmy, do you code your voigtlander 28mm f1.5?
nope
@@JimmyCheng thanks!
I think leica's competitiveness gone really fast with wider angle lenses more specially from 28mm. And frankly summilux 28mm is way too heavy and huge.
yeah at this day and age, with the advancement in computing, and grinding. it’s much easier to design and make good lenses. E.g., the Sony 50 f1.2 is sharper than the Leica 50 Apo at f2.0
28 summilux
The lens hood is quite big on the Summilux, and that's why I always use it without the hood. If you took the hood off, then the sizes of the two are more comparable, height-wise at least.
True. Unfortunately the size difference is still quite substantial, especially weight
