    I also own a 2021 Tesla Model Y LR. My HV battery died twice, at 68k miles and 118k miles, both times replaced under warranty. Both times got the same type of error messages you did. It is not the supercharging. Supercharging does not harm your battery. My Tesla was charged only on level 2 at home 99% of the time, never more than 80-90% and I still had problems. You will be given a refurbished battery with a 50k mile warranty, no matter how many miles are on your car (if you have less than 70k you are still covered until 120k). I very much doubt it was caused by your refrigerator or any devices charging, they charge off the 12V system, which is maintained by the HV battery. This is very little stress compared to driving the car. The main thing you want to avoid is prolonged SOC below 20% or above 80%, but that is just for degradation, it shouldn't cause faults. I've heard of many 2021 model year Tesla Model Y's having this issue, it may be an issue specific to the battery used in this year. Now I am saving to have $15k before my car reaches 168k miles, when my warranty runs out. I may just trade it in for a newer model. Other than this issue, great car. Good luck to you.

    Mine failed a couple of months ago under warranty. The cool thing is I have a Standard range Model Y and I elected to have Tesla replace the battery with a brand new LFP battery. They also upgraded the suspension because of the additional weight of the battery. With the LFP battery, you can charge it to 100% regularly.

      That is a fallacy. Degradation is exactly the same as an NMC battery although cycle life is 2x. Charging to 100% is to calibrate BMS because of the flat voltage curve from 50% to 100% so the BMS cant tell actual charge state from simple voltage measurement.

    This alert is pretty common on 2020 and 2021s. A quick trick is if you disconnect the low voltage battery and reconnect it, it will reset the alert. The alert is a cell imbalance. Good thing it happened at 113k and not 121k!

Not gonna lie, though, if I had a Tesla when I was 20, I would have just lived out of it.
    You got this, bro! Hopefully with the new battery, you'll just let the battery get down to 50% and let it charge up to 80% from there. I was living in an apartment with my 2021 Model Y Dual Motor Long Range for three years until buying our new home (so now we charge in the garage at night). During the time I was living in the apartment, we would take the car to charge at a supercharger when the battery was like at 30% to 40%. So, hopefully, that didn't degrade our battery. Glad you’re alright. This was one of my worst fears while I was temporarily living out of my 2022 Model 3 Long Range. As of writing this, I have 129,361 miles that I accumulated in a little over a year traveling the country.
    Engineering Explained does a good job on talking about battery degradation.
    One of my “tricks” was to find a hotel or some other place that has level 2 charging on the PlugShare app and act like I’m supposed to be there. So long as you’re quiet and don’t draw too much attention to yourself, it honestly works 99% of the time. But you have to play your cards right - experience with the area you’re in helps a lot. Some of them are known to kill the breaker to their chargers if anything looks fishy outside.
    Aside from not Supercharging as often, shallow charges seem to help a lot. Obviously you have to balance practicality, but if you can stomach only using between 30-70%, go for it. 20%-80% will yield similar results too.

    Notice the error says "Reduced maximum charge level." I just wanted to make this clear for other people watching/reading is that this is not an error due to you hitting some sort of maximum number of DC charges but rather the BMS noticing an error in the battery pack and adjusting the safety maximum limit it has to be very low. The BMS has a sort of failure state it can enter when it thinks that the battery is not functioning correctly. If you hit that state, it is independent of DC fast charge count but rather that some battery measurement was not as expected.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 2 місяці тому +1

      His battery pack died due to degradation. More than likely one or more of his cells is too greatly out of balance. Most likely what happened is he was continually discharging 80-90% of the battery at a time which is why it died

    • @ErikMeike
      @ErikMeike 2 місяці тому +1

      @@overnightclassic2 My point was that degradation alone does not cause that error he saw. It may be something like degradation combined with some cell group being out of balance that triggered it to go past a balancing setpoint, but it is not just degradation. Furthermore 113k miles assuming 225 miles per charge (lesser efficiency + lots of idle usage) is 500 cycles on the battery. Thats not crazy for battery lifetime, and supercharging really is not some insane charging C-rate which is what matters for battery longevity. On youtube there are some teslas with extreme degradation that drive and still can DC fast charge, so it is probably a combination of factors.

      He had 500 discharge cycles at 90% but he was also running AC. Not suprised if he was closer to 1000 cycles. Combine that with calendar aging from the heat where he lives and it's very possible his battery just died from degradation and cell imbalance

      But then your range is only 150 miles by charging from 20-80%. I have a 2023 Tesla Model Y LR and plan on going back to gas such as a Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid with over 500 mile range. I'm currently limited by the areas I can travel because of the low range of the Model Y. I recently did a 1,400 mile road trip from northern California to Joshua Tree park and spent about 4 hrs charging on the road in total with 8 stops. I even started from home with 100% charge!!! Long road trips are a pain with all the waiting to charge. I miss the days of 2-5 minute fill-ups with gas. I'm waiting to see if a new redesign is announced for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid at the LA Auto show in November. Maybe the Toyota batteries last so long since they are only level 2 charged. Electric cars are fine for daily commuting and around town, but not good for road trips and exploring remote areas. Gas stations are everywhere and you can also carry and extra gas can with you. A 5 gallon gas can would be good for an extra 190 miles at 38mpg on the Toyota RAV4 plug-in.

    My 2015 Tesla Model S P85D that I purchased new has the original battery. I'm at 140k miles. Elon said to charge to 90% and plug in all the time back in 2015.
    I have dual chargers (inverters) in the MS and my HPWC (High Power Wall Connector) charges at 80Amps at 240Volts (19.2kW). My battery degradation was at less than 5% after 100k miles then went up to 8% at 130k miles. I have lowered the charge rate to 80% for the past 6 months. Even though I have free unlimited supercharging for the life of the car, I only supercharged mainly on long trips.
    My unlimited miles and 8 year warranty for the drivetrain came in useful when the rear drivetrain had to be replaced less than 1 month before the 8 years were up. I noticed a strange noise from the drivetrain that progressively got worse and I took it in to the Tesla SC. I had to pay about $1k for HV cables replacement which I thought would have been covered by the warranty, but apparently not.
    I have had the anxiety of my Tesla with critical malfunctions. My first MCU1 touchscreen went out in mid Feb in Ohio at 1am. -5 F outside temp, no heat, no A/C and my windshield and windows immediately fogged up. My headlights would not work. Pressing both toggle buttons on the steering wheel did not help nor did the other reset by pushing the top buttons. This caused a catastrophic error and my MS would not even charge at all. Tesla wanted $8k for a new touchscreen. I had the extended warranty but it expired after 100k miles.
    I took apart the entire dashboard to remove the MCU emmc chip. I sent it to a guy on the west coast who said he may be able to fix it. He couldn't because it was so trashed. Tesla warned me that if I tried to do any repairs, they would not replace the touchscreen. I had to put everthing back together and match the paint on the screws even lol. It took a couple of days for the work to be done and Tesla eventually reimbursed me after I sent a letter to the NTSB. I have a Cybertruck now for 6 months and charge to only 80% and only charge when battery is at 25%. Good luck and be safe!

    That is about when my charging system died. They said the battery was good but the “system” was toast. It cost around $800 to fix. Good luck with Tesla!

    Driving to less than 20% does NOT hurt your battery. A soft reset is primarily for screens and nothing to do with charging. An easy big reset is to reset the tire size (read your on line manual) and then back. Your car will do a near total reset and many problems can be cured/cleared.

    sounds like the car (Tesla models) chassis is ready, but the main gut (battery technology) isn't at the same level if you had even think about balancing between super charger and level 2 charging for prolong the vehicle. i will give it another decade for electric vehicles to become true roadsters without any worries beyond the regular maintenance and occassional break downs like today's ICEVs

  • @kung_fool
    @kung_fool 2 місяці тому +3

    Man good thing that battery failed before the 120K mark, that's when the warranty would end, at that point I think you gonna need to pay for that HV battery replacement 😅. But like someone says in the comment, fast charging (DC) doesn't seem to be damaging the HV, as long as you don't charge to 100% all the time and let it sit with 100% for a long time. I've met someone with a 2020 Model 3 with 170k miles and dude uses supercharger 90% of the time lol, but his HV still running fresh with 86% battery health. So I guess you're just out of luck with your HV. Glad you're not in the middle of nowhere like you said. Goodluck with the next adventure man!
