You are the first professional to actually say bosch makes a decent tankless😂.Im going to repair one of these trash units and will highly recommend dumping those trash units
Let me guess you prefer Korean or Japanese brands instead? Stop fooling yourself there’s nothing like German engineering.
I have the mega press it saves so much time do yourself a favor each time you press take a marker and write a X on every press fitting
@@PipeDoctor In commercial use we do it all the time for the inspectors and and for lawsuits it says we checked it after the Press has been.
Great video, thank you. Bosch manual and tech support state that 18” of copper pipe from both inlet and outlet. There after, Pex and other materials can be used
Mike . . . Watching you do this install convinced me to install one in my personal residence. . . I am not a contractor but I worked for a natural gas utility for 30 years.
Money into trash can
Mikey in the wonderful state of mass you have to depth mark the pipe with mega press fittings to make sure the pipe is in all the way , also can’t vent gas appliances with pvc any longer , and need to be 18” from water heater with pex lines , love the channel keep feeding us the delicious content
We use flex connectors in California. Nothing ridged from gas line to unit is good practice for them earthquakes!
Not in Mass so no idea, but how do they plan to vent all 90% units that are normally piped out in pvc? Do you have to run some type of bvent and convert the units from pvc to bvent out?
From my quick search, this install is $2x the cost of a traditional tank (parts and labor). What makes it worth it?
@@jeffmpvd7689 the efficiency and endless hot water. You can shower for 5 hrs if you wanted to granted you have water, gas, and electricity
Am a contractor, and doing that job under 3 hours was impressive. 💪💪💪
@@PipeDoctor Thank you for the review, you just changed my purchase. I value the opinion of a expert in the trenches everyday.
6:30 I mean clean install overall. The only thing using those press fittings the union placement with the press fittings means that either the whole unit will have to come off the wall to spin gas pipe out of unit.
Just swing the pipe to front and can turn ell , but union should be between ell and tee on bottom
@@clintgray1623 your right except you would have to swing it back and we'll with black pipe your not suppose to loosen pipe to it's final position. Your suppose to tighten it to it's final position. Real world yeah your gonna do what you have to
Can we do the soapy bubble test on one of these units?
I really enjoyed this presentation because of your use of the latest technology in installing the Bosch water heater. As a former Sales Engineer and now retired I also chose the Bosch line of Boilers and Warer heaters as the best products out there!
The inside looks like my Rinnai tankles which I love and have absolutely no issues with
Hi Mikey I have not put the Bosch on demand hot water heater in yet but I am put about 50 to 60 floor mounted combi Bosch green stars in and I’ve literally had a problem with one of them they are an absolute great Boiler technical support is awesome and super super simple to install
Hey Mike love your videos. Watch them a lot. I’ve been considering Tankless and keep looking at this Bosch T9900i SE. but a lot keep mentioning Navien NPE-A2 but as I watch a lot of your videos seems like I need to stay away from Navien. But one thing I liked about them is it had a buffer tank. I definitely wanted one with a recirc cause I have an external recirc pump already. Planning on replacing two 50gals.
I haven’t even looked at Rinnai, Rheem, etc. Didnt think they even worth looking at.
idk that megapress fitting came out crooked....gotta be aware of how youre holding the pipe before pressing
Just got home from work a little late on the dial there but feed me my key feed me now I'm hungry need something to go with these beers LOL
Mr Pipes is the Bosch Greentherm T9900i SE 199 - 11.2 GPM Residential Natural Gas or Liquid Propane High Efficiency Gas Tankless Water Heater a good unit? My heater is 25 years old now
I had one installed 4 years ago and just had to replace it due to failed burner assembly(NOT COVERED UNDER 5 year warranty as stated in video) the company was zero help and even though I was only 3 months over 4 years they would not cover or discount price on new burner! Apparently this is a common problem with this unit.
Very nice install! My Jersey HVAC license won’t allow me to install these for my customers. I have installed a few Tankless for friends and family but I’m really liking the Bosch line!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Love mega , been using it on hydronic heating retrofits for a couple of years now, have the kids get in the habit of marking the pipe make up when doing mega g with soapstone or paint marker to make sure engagement is correct before pressing.
Great job very moving will be putting one in my home thank you great crew
I have had this for over an year and really enjoy it. What maintenance needs done on this?
The unit should be descaled annually
Grest install. As far as specs. Go they used to list tankless specs. By how many hot water appliances you can operate at once. Now they only spec. Various temperature rise. How many showers at once can this unit supply at once do you think.
We did a training today on that unit in my office, grate job.
Everything Bosch looks like a quality product Mikey, just not sure about availability of replacement parts within North America (specifically Canada), most important thing for me.
Prob going to have to cut those pipes out after the union if you want to change that unit out or have to change the gas valve in it. Maybe all press before the the union and thread after the union. Looks good though
That black gas pipe press is the cats ass! What a time savings n no tripod n oily noisy machine to cut threads. Great install mr pipes! Daniel is doing great, what a great kid. Watched a few tech vids from Bosch on there machines, very interesting n cool the technology n engineering they put into the machine. Looked up prices as well n not that expensive. Now to have Mikey Pipes install with all his fancy tools n his best sidekick Daniel, I’m sure it can get pricey. Well worth it tho I’d say. Keep up the great work😬
I think one advantage of connections going from Top to bottom on early wall hungs was due to leaks damaging components. The fittings use to be on top and a lot of systems fried under the slightest leaks. So the big selling point was back then that connections at the base stopped this issue. Moving back to top connections your going to relearn some lessons.
@@PipeDoctor While I trust my workmanship, I have come across so many defective products even brass fittings with sand holes. I will take my tapping's at the bottom under the electronics.
Does Bosch have a built-in recirculation pump?
Have had issues with these units burner getting blocked, after replacing burner plate they will suggest a hepa filter installed on the inducer, if you look there is two screw holes on the inducer in this video. Also this filter adds 20 feet of equilivent vent length, always wonder why they didnt always come with this filter.....hmmm. if you install these play it safe and run 3 inch vent
Well you just started putting them in, it looks like, wait 3 years, and since the warrenty is cut to 3 years with space heating. The customer is than stuck with a pretty heavy service call because the burner can't be cleaned and needs to be replaced. The burner cost 350 dollars, plus labour. And than 100 dollars for the hepa filter to prevent it from happening again.
Do you have part number or picture of this filter please! The EXACT thing happened to mine! NOT covered under warranty! Please post picture of filter or part number!
@@walterheisler6465 Did you ever find the part number for the HEPA filter?
@@bri4jennno I actually installed a K&N air filter on my inlet pipe! It has been installed for about a year with zero issues!
What’s the maintenance on that thing now? And I believe it’s six times the cost of a regular water heater so how long until I get the return on my money.?
Takagi and Noritz are the best value for thankless units. Both are made in Japan.
This unit cost about $2200 to buy. Labor is pretty easy obviously. A good tank heater will cost the same and maybe last ten years if your water is good.
@@daversj you still have to run a condensation line and possibly a condensation pump, and you also have yearly maintenance, but $ 2200 isn’t bad thought it be more ; But then again you can get a conventional gas water heater for $1000, as long as you have the flu
@@houptee i put a Takagi in my sisters house when i first saw them at plumbing supply. It’s still working perfectly 12 years later, with almost no service. Its a non energy star, non condensing unit, slightly less efficient…I think the unit was like $1000 at the time. Amazing value and super small size. But make sure your water quality is good.
@@daversj I have 6 non condensing Takagi Tk-jr in my multi family house. Installed 2008. All working great. Cost new about $500 each.
I install my boschgreenthrm T9800 SE 199 tankless water heater but when I turn it on and says ignition failure check inlet pressure…not sure whats the problem
I'm a plumbing contractor in Minnesota. Do you have any issues with a cold water sandwich due to no buffer tank and recirc line? We don't do a lot of tankless because the incoming water temp is very low but would like to start installing more.
Just add those cross valves
Mikey pipes, I wanted to toss this question to you. What happens if there’s a fire near the mega press fittings? Is it going to melt the sealing o-ring and have gas blowing ? Just curious as to your thoughts.
@@PipeDoctor its not hate, its a valid concearn which is why they test for it. but all that clamping force its more of a weld
If the fire is bad enough to melt out a fitting, more than just the oring has to melt for a major amount of gas to leak. Like the arguments against pvc pipe. If your fire is that bad, you have worse problems.
Also I believe you're supposed to have a minimum amount of copper waterline before going to pex
18 inches
Do like the press but I never press after the union just for the next guy who will be you great job bud
@@PipeDoctor ok I didn’t see a way for it to swing was all my bad 😣
Loved this episode cant wait for some electrical videos and hvac
Do you need a condensate filter?
Am I watching an ad for Bosch?
Hi Mikey - I love your UA-cam content. I have learned a lot so far. I was hoping for some advice. I have a Noritz tankless hw heater. Over the last month or so it has been rattling a lot when there is a large demand for hw. (Shower or washer). I ran 2 gallons of vinegar through it for 1 hour and it still rattles. Do you have a recommendation how I can fix this? Thanks
when was last maintenance?
the last one was today for 1 hour of cleaning and the one before that was winter of 2021. The hw heater is about 13 years old. Thank you for your reply.
You like Bosch better than naviens? What’s the difference besides water on top? I thought Bosch was always electric units
What’s the cost for the unit and to get it installed?
I wanna try the new Bradford White tankless. They have a similar setup. Nice install crew
@@PipeDoctor 😂😂😂 just looked it up and it’s the same
Is mega press for gas allowed in nyc or just long island?
Its me.....watching a video by you.
Hey Mikey, love your vids, I've got some new t9800se that are leaking gas around the gas manifold gaskets. Manufacturer is telling me gas leaking inside the cabinet is normal. They are saying it's fine and will be sucked back into the intake. But they haven't given it to me in writing. Have you run into this? I have pictures using soap to prove the leaks.
Thoughts?
leaking inside the cabinet?
@@PipeDoctor yes, inside the cabinet.
@@PipeDoctor to me it doesn't make sense, 1 screw and 1 fitting were loose, I tightened those and that fixed the leaks but there was a 3rd larger leak coming from the bottom of the gas manifold plate.
@@Chilldil86 Were you able to resolve the 3rd larger leak? If so, how?
@bri4jenn no
Really liking these machines, just recently recommending tankless wall hungs for tank replacements. What do you do if they only have 1/2" on the tank now? Sorry if it's a dumb guestion.
Great job guys.
By the way I like Daniel's mustache 😎
Why not send the fresh air vent outside 🤔 but as always great job👍🏼
Are these type of fittings legal in the 5 boroughs?
Magapress is a great tool. When they first came out my boss bought one. We are in the shop open it up and put on a fitting. My boss is like hey man try it out I go ok. I put the press on the fitting and my boss says everyone watch out. I pull the trigger expecting a massive amount of torque and to be thrown, we even had some boxes lined up for me to be slammed into. That tool went rrrrrrrrrrrh click. Everyone was like OHHHHHHH! expecting the worst. I go that's it? LMAOOOOOOOOOO
The mega press machine is very nice built machine but the downfall it does come with a hefty price tag. Someday I'll get one. Let's go bosch
What s gonna happen if these units start leaking in a couple of years ? Just like KD units. Should we go back to regular water heater tanks or install another tankless brand ? I don’t know what we gonna do… lol
I installed a Rheem on demand 9 years ago in my home. Not one problem in 9 years. It could stop working tomorrow and it wouldn't bother me one bit. The Bosch that Mike installed is probably just as good or even better than my Rheem. For one thing the technology on the Bosch is 9 years ahead of my Rheem. Which like I said has run without one issue.
Was that an actual rubber gasket around the unit where the cover seals?????? 😳😳😳😳
@@PipeDoctor BTW……..your sticker wasn’t put on straight……😂😂😂😂
@@jaxsonhugh9334 agreed I noticed that too fengshui let's go Brandon
What's the price difference from tank to tankless
Hi . I am a Landlord and have a Rental Contract with AWHR for the hot water tanks but seem to leak out about 4-5 years and i have to call usually on a WEEKEND and they wont send out a plumber until Monday !!!!
I pay about $ 116 per Month for 6 rental tanks... This is for a 3 bed rental apartments around 800-1000 sqft units in Massachusetts..... Would it be cost effective to replace one every years to the Bosch Tankless like in this video ? What are cost to buy and install ? What is cost of one of those Mega Press machine and fittings ? Keep up the Great Videos !!!!
Thousands and thousands of dollars!
On your current heaters you need to make sure your plumbers are using expansion tanks and water quality might be an issue.
Mike I have not finished watching this , I stopped at 1:28 . I have to ask you about the incomplete statement you made . You never mentioned gas supply and do have enough to feed the walling unit . That tank you are replacing is probably 40,000 BTU's and the wall hung is 150,000 BTU's . I think you can see my point . Maybe some clarification would be helpful On with tonights broadcast . #LGB
Michael, are you gonna jump on Viega's MegaPress Water (green) fittings for all those steam boilers in NY?!?!?!
Great work mike !
Hey Mikey Pipes! Great video as usual.
Hey just as an FYI, you've mentioned the number of views vs the number of comments and subscribers. I often watch UA-cam on my TV via the UA-cam app, and there is no way to leave a comment. You can "Like" and "Subscribe" but not comment.
Its been a year since you installed this Bosch tankless are you still standing behind this product?
Mine failed in 4 years 3 months and NOT covered under warranty!
What's the damage run on that unit.
Nice video!! When you install these heaters, do you do the power hook up? How do I sign up for the ABC program?
@@PipeDoctor didn't realize it was a plug and play! How do you become a dealer for them?

There are no accredited Bosch service providers in my area. Could a highly experienced plumber install one of these?
Yes they can. it's the same as doing a hot water tank
Hey Mikey bigcatmatt here the guy that Where’s 2pounds of gold I noticed u upgraded your Cuban link bracelet very nice nicey nice soft and warm the quiet storm love videos make them longer iam hungry
@@PipeDoctor how many grams on that one what style exactly is that I like that one??
It’s the 9th
Incredible! 👍
Does this give u hot water sooner upstairs??
nope. I have a tankless and hot water is not quicker, for that you need a re-circulation line or crossover valve in far sink with pump. I went from tank to tankless and seems to take longer now to get hot water to outlets after change, not a bosch a rheem but still same principle. Think about it, you dont get some minor convection of hot water up the pipe, and when you turn on have about a second or two before unit turns on, then has to start to heat the ex-changer up. Total about 3-5 seconds then hot water is coming out of unit to your open faucet, where a tank unit once you open the hot water is coming out of the tank. These are tankless not instant hot water and for closer to instant you need a re-circulation of some type.
@@01Hokiefan I think most people confuse "endless" hot water with "instant". I have a Rinnai outdoor unit. I will turn the shower on and go take a piss, brush my teeth etc etc. I just learned to make myself busy. 3200 sq ft home master bath furthest point in the house. Takes around a minute give or take for it to get to temp. It's all pex home runs so I would need several recirc pumps if it really bothered me. If I was custom building I would have a dedicated return. They really should have done that here. All new homes with a Rinnai. Live and learn.
Mike I don’t know why you use plastic up top and not all copper makes the job look not so good
Mike. My bad. They already had pecks in the house I would’ve done the same thing. Have to do whatever you gotta do. Looks great love your videos.
Hey Mike whats your opinion on Laars boilers?
@@PipeDoctor nice no answer answer
BEAUTIFUL UNIT...LOL
DIDN'T BOSCH REPS SAY THE UNIT HAS AN ALUMINUM HEAT EXCHANGER, NOT STAINLESS STEEL?
I also heard him state that but I thought someone else stated on their "value" models they use SS.
Last time I was this early she got mad...😉🤣🤣
So you can’t break the gas line now after the press elbow…guess you can cut it and press on a coupling 🤔🤔🤔
What kinda money you charge for that Mike?
Who sells this?
lets see some soapy bubbles on that heat exchanger!
@@PipeDoctor I am sure it will not, but that will just make the Jabs at Navinot sting alittle more
Based on my personal experience as an owner/builder, I highly recommend against buying this unit.
Cons:
I general contracted an entire house for my family and my $1800 Bosch Greentherm Water Heater has given me more trouble than every other piece of hardware combined.
The device started having miscellaneous errors after a few months and now fails multiple times per day roughly a year later. It can’t even make it through its own “auto-adjust” process - the burner goes out.
The warranty support is worthless. Just hoops to jump through with no real assistance.
Pros:
Perfect for people that prefer cold water.
@@PipeDoctor Thanks for the response Mikey! Glad I'm not just imagining it too.
its all cool and I'm not trying to be mean but I want to see some service calls on them. There is nothing perfect in this world, so would be nice to test their warranty support.
