    "Traveled 'round the world
    Looking for a home
    I found myself in crowded rooms
    Feeling so alone"
    That's the line. The one that follows about lovers basking in her spotlight is a natural companion.

    I think she included the car scene to emulate Princess Diana who passed away a year before. I also loved how the faces of the people in the lounge were distorted and made them almost frightening. It's definitely in my top 5 favorite Madonna videos and songs

    The darker side of fame. I love when she shows her vulnerable side. The scene at the party with the distorted faces I think is brilliant. I often feel that way in large gatherings so I can imagine her level of fame intensifies the disconnect from strangers.

    most of Madonna's ballads involve deep and personal thoughts, this woman moves me in so many ways, one of my favorite songs with nothing fails...although I love so many of them, so emotional, a song and a beautiful music video that deserves a lot more views really. this song always gives me chills just like time stood steel, this use to be my playground, little girl, you'll see, joan of arc, inside out , looking for mercy, promise to try and so many others. the lyrics of every song are so deep.
    thank you for your reactions about Madonna, very touching!

    This song was the opening number on The Drowned World Tour. As of today, this is the only ballad to start a show. She's front and center with a mic and did no choreography. She sounded great too.

    Awesome, deep, insightful reaction to this mv. This is one of my all-time top 10 fave Madonna songs. Powerful message about the superficiality of stardom and celebrity culture-and how she found refuge and genuine love in motherhood-her “new religion”…Really appreciate your reactions to Madonna’s artistry.

    My absolute favorite number one song of all time, as a loyal fan from the very beginning, and knowing her as well as a top fan can, this song speaks to me as the real Madonna, it makes me feel every emotion she intended and I love her for it, she impacted my life in so many ways, she is the Queen, but yet, she is a human being at the same time.. I LOVE YOU @MADONNA.. 👑

  • @SuperQueenMadonna

    Her life and Princess Diana was similar in the Paparazzi situation, hence the beginning scene getting chased on the road into a tunnel. This is truly a song about FAME, I wonder where I’ve heard this idea in Modern Pop. LOL

    Great opener to the album.
    "Drowned World/Substitute for Love" was released as the album's *third single* , worldwide, except in the United States.
    The child in the video isn't Lourdes though, it's a 'Substitute for Lola'!
    The song includes a sample from the song "Why I Follow the Tigers" by the San Sebastian Strings, a group created by both Kerr and McKuen. The vocal sample was of a man uttering the words _"you see"_ , later confirmed by him to be actor Jesse Pearson.
    And of course we couldn't forget that... *nobody hums like Madonna* !

    Even as one of her most direct videos, this got a lot of flak as a lot of critics compared the opening car scene to Princess Diane (she had passed about 6 months earlier). Unfortunately, M will always be criticized on some level for her work. Also, the girl at the end wasn’t her daughter. Lourdes wasn’t quite that old yet.

    • @bridgethegapreactions
      @bridgethegapreactions  Рік тому +6

      Haha, oh lord - that's a reach. It's not like it was a crash or anything resembling the diana thing. She will have got that flak from the same media that made Diana's life miserable too. Scum.

    • @taintedlife2618
      @taintedlife2618 Рік тому +3

      @@bridgethegapreactions always thought that was a deliberate critique of the paparazzi chase that lead to Diana’s death. Even if not too close to what happened to her. Just distant enough to remind people of what behaviors lead to her demise😢
      Edit: I guess I assumed what many did but her publicist said that wasn’t deliberate.

    • @deantailor357
      @deantailor357 Рік тому +2

      @@taintedlife2618 It wasn't deliberate and she'd actually been chased through that same tunnel. Also, she was one of the few celebs to NOT come out and blame the press for Diana's death, at the time, maybe because it was too real. If anyone knows what it was like living under that kind of pressure and being photographed and filmed every day of your life, it was Madonna.

    Warner should've released this as the first single as a teaser so to speak way ahead of the appetizer that is Frozen and then the main course which is the title track upon the album's official release.
    Nobody expected her to come up with this new sound. By doing so, the singles would've performed much higher on the charts than it did. Three no. 1s possibly. Another example of missed of many missed opportunities by the record label.

    Thanks Jonny! I’ve been looking forward to you reacting to this since I discovered your channel - it’s my favourite Madonna song. The writing, her vocals & Orbit’s production are all top notch and combine to produce something beautiful & delicate yet so powerful. I think you’re right in that it’s one of Madonna’s most direct songs - maybe that’s why I find it so easy to connect with the emotion of the song.
    The video is great too: the irony of the “so happy” lyric accompanied by the unsmiling visual, just as the music transforms gives me chills every time.
    An incredible piece of music and a wonderful opener to a fantastic album. I know you’ve heard most of the parts now but it would be great to have you do a full RoL reaction to get a sense of the full experience of that album.

    Great reaction, yes as you mention pretty literal video. I believe Frozen was released first, video and single, and this came later which I didn’t quite understand. My favorite song on the album. I have been going down a rabbit hole of unreleased songs and alternate versions from the Ray of Light era that have been posted liberally on UA-cam. Who knew? A few really good songs that ended up on the cutting room floor: Gone, gone, gone, Be Careful, Like a Flower.

    Well, unfortunately, they no longer chase her like this; there is very little about her that people have an interest in these days. The world today trades on the brand of celebrity that she had a large hand in creating. I can't help but feel she has been very defensive the past decade; the previous 30 she spent on offence. Everyone changes, I guess ❤

So instead of focusing on how terrific this song and its video is, what about being DISMISSIVE...now if a has-been like Mariah Carey ever sits next to me (hopefully it won't ever happen because I don't like to share a space with awful people), I definitely would not even say "hi" to her.
