This is probably my favorite Madonna track of all time. I played it to death when it came out and I’ve never tired of it. This is an edited version of the studio version of the song. The song is basically twice as long on the album. There are so many layers in this song. Like you said - it’s so grounded and earthy and somewhat dark. It’s a mood.

Although this is kind of close to the original album version I actually think that the album version is even better and more haunting.

Great reaction. I love, love, love this song and video. Twenty years later and it still sounds fresh and new.
Not only is the album version longer and somewhat "larger" than this - and therefore worth listening to, but it's also at this point good to mention how many of us first came to hear this song. A demo of Paradise (Not For Me) was leaked and it had an even more "crystalline" sound to the voice, almost like her voice was made literally of glass resonating like a set of singing wine glasses. It was completely mind-blowing at the time and came not so long after Cher had a huge hit with "Believe" and the vocal alterations in that song were prominent too.
This is the kind of technical wizardry that I like, where on particular songs it adds something very magical to the sound of her voice and for a particular effect. I'm much, much less of a fan of what she did in the years after this, where the auto-tune effect is on almost all the time (e.g. "Medellin") and usually with a less "sharp" sound; so the machines rob the famous organic warmth from her voice but at the same time don't amp up the coldness, leaving it almost featureless. "Paradise (Not For Me)'s" vocal effects however take the metaphorical temperature down to *subzero* and that really adds to the song's meaning, as it's largely a song about Death.
The imagery in this video is also stunning and very reminiscent of Bjork's "Homogenic" era and of course Madonna's own "Nothing Really Matters" song in the Ray of Light album. As you said, the song could potentially have been in the ROL album as well, and sounds quite different to many of the songs on "Music".

The long album version is such a masterpiece (the strings are so powerful ) French producer Mirwais are amazing and the song PARADISE was not supposed to be for Madonna it was supposed to be only on Mirwais own album with an another singer but Madonna love the song so much she "fight " for it with Mirwais and her record compagny (the song also appears on Mirwais album released few months before Madonna's MUSIC album it could have been a problem with 2 records compagny but i remenber Mirwais say something like Madonna made a call to her record compagny and everything was ok lol )THe album version is everything ;lyrics , production ,the unbelievable rise of the strings ,the way she sings and a lovely verse in french (without that much accent by the way ) I'm sure it's gonna be a journey for you !

I think this song is about dying. In the lyrics she tries to remember when she was young but she can’t. But she knows that after she’s gone her face will remain in people’s eyes. The whole video is a death ceremony: the two warriors represent the fight between life and death followed by a “death walk” where two assistants walk behind her accompanying her in her walk to the Light. But when she walks into the light the assistants remain on the other side and the doors closes behind her... she’s on her own now. And the light comes down on her and takes her away. But when she dies a red light comes out of her mouth, her “life breathe” escapes her body.
At the very end we see a dead tree, a cherry tree, which is the symbol of the “tree of life” in Japanese culture. When she performed this song at the Confessions Tour there was a screen behind her showing a cherry tree losing all it’s flowers, representing the passing of the seasons of life. And at the end of the performance when the tree has lost all the flowers and the “winter of life” arrives, a light descents over Madonna while she sings “there is a light above my head, into your eyes my face remains”, and the light takes her away again.

The studio version is 6:33 of pure bliss which I believe if I'm not mistaken is the longest song in her discography, one her finest moments in my opinion. I remember listening to it off of Mirwais's album 'Production' in 1999 (it was first released on his album before being tagged onto Music). Hope you can react to Zara Larson's new single 'Love Me Land' I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Madonna is the most remixed artist of all time! There are literally a 100 versions of each & every song she released by her own label of 12" Maxi-Singles (club mixes) or bootleg/home DJ versions that are done by other DJ's or your average "Joe's" who's into music production! Thanks Dereck!

I love so many Madonna songs but this song always resonated with me in a different way. I even have the words ‘your paradise is not for me’ tattooed on my arm. I’ve always interpreted the lyrics as a battle with religion, especially as a gay man. The idea that I would not be accepted in a traditional heaven (“paradise”) has always hit hard and this song almost has a defiance against that traditional religious ideology and makes me think that paradise isn’t so perfect. Also that production is 🔥

That wasn't a xylophone. It was a synthesizer.

i really like the strings on this song. electronics cant reproduce the sounds of real "strings". If you can check out the Demo version (maybe here on youtube), i find it better than the cd version. vocals are without voice box affect. its more dramatic, in my opinion.

The studio version is killing me, you can hear the details her vocal, instruments and background vocal, this song is evergreen... even in another decade people still enjoy this track cause it such pure masterpiece. Her live version 2006 are amazing... put this track into another level featuring Isaac Sinvani, in 2016 she perform in Tears Of A Clown... which is more personal with different persona.

Please Dereck, listen to the album version, it's absolutely worthy of the album title Music ( and it is music with a capitol M, and a great trip to get in)

Dereck you MUST react to the Drowned World Tour! By far the most different show that Madonna has done, it included only songs from ROL, MUSIC and BEDTIME STORIES!

You should react this song on tour. Paradise is not for me on the Drowned World Tour
