i see people have stated that the standard of kata has increased today but i would argue that the purpose for which the katas were created has been lost. original practitioners saw battle and created forms to combat potential opponents. Katas are done for medals today. So one can say that modern kata is more "athletic" but you cannot say "better" without knowing what the original context was.
That brought back memories. My teacher was third generation student from Master Funakoshi. And that first form was the first one I learned. 1975 is now a long time away. But it is so heartwarming to see this early film and know my teacher did indeed teach me correctly. I can't help but feel pride at being a fourth generation student of the "House of Shoto" But the Tao wasn't and isn't done teaching me. Overcome the darkness. Return the Light. Grow the Art. It really pisses me off to see how orientals can change techniques in whatever style of martial arts they practice. But when westerners do it the world makes a big to do about it.As you can see from this video karate stances were never practice in Okinawa with the big exaggerated stances of the Japanese but some one had to change it for whatever reason. Was that considered a diss to Funakoshi and Okinawan karate no.But to this day there is a lot of bickering amongst martial artist because someone wants to express a tecnique in a way that suit their body structure.
Yeah. Also notice the manner of executing shuto uke. Funakoshi does it like other Okinawans, bringing the blocking arm directly from the solar plexus instead of raising it to the ear as became the predominant practice in Shotokan. Who changed it and why, especially since raising the blocking hand to the ear is impractical and downright silly?
You´re right, but don´t be pissed off about it. It´s the way so many "masters" try to create compliace and loyalty to their schools. Just continue your journey and don´t mind the fanatics and the salesmen. Ossu!

fernando linton Okinawan Karate stances are much more natural and higher than their Japanese counterparts, yes.
