  • Some new information about John Mayer's use of the Soldano SLO-100 has come up! There is the SRV Custom version that he is said to have used for Last Train Home, seen in the music video, as well as new information on his rack gear that leads to the possibility that the SLO-100 was used off stage during the Sob Rock Tour. In this 2 in 1 video we tackle both of these pieces to the puzzle of Mayer's gear!

I was fortunate enough to grab one of the 13 SRV SLO - 100’s on Tuesday. She’s a beauty and sounds fantastic. I am a Two Rock user and this amp sounds very similar to my Two Rock CRS. I haven’t set up a true A/B comparison yet but will. It’s crazy because I know two other guys personally that have one of the 13 amps. I “think” John has one as well. The mid scoop really helps on this amp for the SRV tones. Beautiful Tweed. No reverb on board so a reverb pedal is required and a footswitch to go from clean to crunch. I now have to sell some gear….unfortunately…..Lol…. First up will be the CS 64 Vibroverb Reissue. Love it but can’t keep everything. 🤷‍♂ BTW, very Informative video! 👍 Cheers brother. H. 😊

Hey guys, I included this in a reply earlier. Here are the details on the 13 amps that were made. I am fortunate to have one.

Before Mike sold the company/retired there were 13 more made. The big difference between these and a regular SLO 100 is a few minor internal things, and the BIG thing is the Mid Cut Switch located on the FRONT of the amp. An included small Footswitch MUST be engaged and set to Clean and the Mid Cut Switch MUST be in the down position as it’s not labeled in the amp. So they are definitely not a stock SLO-100. I was fortunate enough to grab one of these with the included 4 x 12 cabinet (which I’ll never use). They are all in tweed with “chicken” knobs.
Now here is the really cool thing. After performing through an old 65 Super Reverb for. 30+ years (and a few others) Rivera’s etc. I bought a Two Rock CRS with the 2 x 12 Cab. It was the CLEANEST sounding amp/head I had EVER played through. Ran it through the 2 x 12 Two Rock Cab, but foe smaller shows a 1 x 12 cab made my Vboutique. Loaded it with a WGS 12L. Incredible speaker. When I got the Soldano home my dear friend Tommy Katona (who owns one and is the main reason I ended up with the this one) mentioned to me how he dialed it in. Well to my shock the Soldano head through the 1 x 12 Cab or 2 x 12 Cab was A bit CLEANER and a bit BIGGER sounding than my Two Rock CRS. Which was shocking as the TR was literally the best sounding amp I had ever play through. So there is something special about these Soldano “SRV” SLO-100’s. And that mid cut switch is the real game changer, along with whatever minor changes Mike made internally. One final thing. To be completely honest the difference between the Soldano and the Two Rock is small. I can make em “almost” sound the same, But going forward the Soldano will be my gigging amp for the majority of my shows. Anyway, just some detailed info on the Amp. Have a good one. HRZ.

Great video Justin, had no idea about the SRV SLO! I agree that despite having the Radial switcher labeled with the Soldano label, I saw John in Boston and was in row 3, and with my experience with the SLO his live tone sounded nothing like the lead channel in the SLO. Not as thick, not as much gain, and pretty much just sounded like his normal stacked chain of drives more or less.

here’s a little correction though. There is only one amp that Mike Saldano built for Stevie. Stevie passed away before giving feedback for Mike to tweak. It was simply a prototype. Amp made its way back to Mike a few years later. He has since lent it out too close friends for recording sessions, and I believe it might be in a museum at this point. But, it is a one of a kind one off so John definitely does not own it. there are no others and nobody else owns it.

Unless you are standing right next to Mayer, knowing his patches, drivers, circuits, cabs, etc, it’s a never ending guesswork with some finite parameters. We put this type of gear, whether it be the dumble, which we know he runs and has a backup. There is as much evidence on “I guess I just feel Like” , which you mention briefly, the outro lead, supposedly was played on a dimed out small watt practice amp and an Epiphone and that’s the tone originally, did he come back and mimic with fuzz, very possible, but he’s gonna get the sound he’s going for, period, or while searching he finds something. If you see his studio work, he keeps his loops going until he finds the lock on tone, cadence, melodic structure (which he plays against the grain as well as anyone I’ve ever seen knowingly doing so. I’m a gear fanatic as well, but like I said, his tone is his tone. If he wanted to clean up a Soldano, there’s about 50 ways to do so. He has a 1/13, many vids confirm that, but you are correct, no way it’s coming on to the stage as he also uses a dumble replica sometimes and the original is backstage. My thoughts are, “What does it matter?, we could have legit chops; say even par with Mayer, but his technique has every bit to do with his sound as his gear.

It’s a pity SRV never got to use them. He was experimenting a lot with his tones in the last year of his life.

Stevie did get to use his original slo custom, they just never got the time to speak and talk about what he liked/didnt but Mike has said himself stevie loved it

Great video, also the headbone cannot be switched remotely, even if he has the radial JX44 switch (which is just for input and output)

Idk if anyone has brought this up yet but on the Today Show performance of last train home one of the band members had a very custom white silver sky with a painted headstock and a blue truss rod cover. Is there any more info on this guitar? Maybe justin could do a video on it.

11:16 John's a big dude. That guitar looks tiny on him.

Then there’s this. ua-cam.com/video/48OQL5bnyzA/v-deo.html Raunchy tone. This feels like a very tight fuzz through a Dumble or an SSS pedal, again, he does what he wants and the band and vocalist follow him. If you watch halfway through this lead he hits a boost that pushes his mids, humbuckers and a “correctly” dialed tube screamer, that’s crazy close. Wicked none the less.
