In the late 1980's Mike Soldano took his new guitar amp design to Los Angeles and got it in the hands of the best guitar players of the day. The SLO 100 quickly became one of the go to amps for these session legends like Steve Lukather, Mike Landau, Tim Pierce and many others. To this day the SLO 100 is one of the most versatile guitar amps on the market.
Thanks to @timpierceguitar for telling his story of the SLO 100

Rhett, it was an honor to talk about an amp that is super important and something, honestly, that I really needed to get my job done as a session guitarist. Great video, and still a great sounding Amp in 2023.... thank you Michael for inventing it:)
I'm always so happy to see you in Rhett's videos, and on your own channel. What an amazing friend for Rhett to have. The video where you help him select his Les Paul taught me so much about choosing a guitar among all the guitars that hang on the wall.
I have heard some great things about Soldono amps, but if we're going to be historically correct, ALL of the LA session players were going to Paul Rivera for mods of their Fender amps and then his own amplifiers long before Soldono. He is a giant and I'm not sure why his amps seem to get overlooked. They cover all of the tones one could ever need...a tone tweaker's dream.
Can you point us to the Rick Springfield track you're discussing near the end of the video?
Thanks so much Tim! I always love having you on the channel!
@Tim Pierce Guitar - Do you still have that first SLO you bought?
Part of what made soldano amps so loved is Mike himself.
Back around 2000, I acquired an early slo100. I was living in Hawaii, and I called Soldano because I had a question about the amp. I don't even remember what the question was.
Mike looked up the serial number and realized my amp was from before he added the effects loop. He offered to add it for free if I paid shipping. I didn't even ask for it. I didn't know it was an option.
That's service. He went above and beyond. Best experience I've ever had on a service call. He is just beyond cool. Mike, we love and respect you, brother. Thanks for sharing your new find, Rhett. These amps deserve all the love.
Mike Soldano is the best.
A true maestro
Yes! He’s such a gentleman on every level. He’s the only high-end amp manufacturer who I had NO problem whatsoever paying the money for. He’s so humble, and so friggin nice.
Fantastic service. I've owned numerous Soldano amps throughout the years and called them many times. Mike and Bill Sundt typically helped me with any questions I had, even regarding used amps I had bought. I don't have any experience with anyone else from the company but those two were so helpful and friendly.
Every amp I've owned from them was smokin in their own rights.
Judging by the pricing, you had already paid for the mod
Love this amp's presence, in both a tonal and historical sense. Quite literally a timeless piece of gear.
I mean I can probably put a time on it, it's a little younger than my dad 😅
In October of 1985 Mike brought that “breadboard” prototype amp over to test on my 1982 Marshall anniversary cabs for a comparison here in Seattle. I was a typical 80’s metal player into the high gain but also played clean, but with celestions the clarity of his amp was not noticeable at first. I used my iceman with PAFs and Mike was really excited about what he was hearing from his amp, so much that he said right then “he’s going to relocate to Cali and pursue building an amp while working at Stars Guitars in S.F. He completed making my Soldano double neck which was his last guitar and went full on in the amp biz. I’m so happy for Mike’s success cuz he’s a really great guy and friend of high quality, just like everything he creates!🤘💜
So when Micheal S was developing this amp at the time he was my cousins guitarist stage tech and had Modded his Marshall’s at the time. We did a show together and I asked him to
Mod my XB100 and he laughed at me and said there’s literally nothing I could do to that amp and make it sound any better. Saw at NAMM in 2019 and he remembered telling me that back in 1987.
Can you clarify……. He said that meaning the xb100 was great in itself or meaning they were shiite? That was my backup head for years that got me out of a few jams when my dsl 100 took a shit on me right before gigs. I loved that old carvin.
I remember hearing Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton both playing Soldanos in late 1988. It was a crazy time and they sounded amazing!!
I remember the suits.
@@Mikey__Rshoulder pads
What kills me about the Soldano is the clean channel. Everyone talks about the lead channel, and for good reason. But the clean channel is incredible.
That amp completely fixed your slide tone. You now have the very best slide tone that has ever been heard. Suck it, Josh.
🔥🔥🔥🔥SICK BURN 🔥🔥🔥🔥
sick burn!
Oooooohhh burn 🔥🔥🔥
😂
Hey Josh, YA BURNT!!🔥🔥
I saw Warren Haynes use one with Gov’t Mule in 1998 and I’ve dreamed of one ever since.
That SLO30 sounds VERY good too. I owned both, and the only time you heard the difference was side-by-side. I didn’t need a 100w amp, so I went with the 30. Anyone who thinks the 30 doesn’t have the signature sound, watch a video from a guy by the name of “Cragginshred”. He gives a clinic on how to get the SLO signature plexi, hard-rock sound, this amp was designed around.
12:35 Black Crowes sounded rad
I have been playing through Soldanos now for over 30yrs. I have a two twelve 120 watt that Mike made for me back in early 2000’s that on three will make the fillings in your teeth vibrate…no joke!! Mike is pure genius!!
This made me laugh. Have a good day man🍻
This is my desert island amp!!! Ever since I saw/heard Martin Barre from Jethro Tull play one live, I was blown away by the sound! These amps rock, and they clean up really well! I might just clone it someday!
What would be your desert island generator?
@@cmet8280 Fusion.
When I hear SLO100 I think of metal. Cool to hear another genre played through one. Still my Holy Grail amp.
+Clapton, Knopfler. Its just an amp at the end of the day and a very good one at that :)
Gary Moore Warren Haynes
Seriously the best amp I’ve ever heard. There’s no crud, very clean and defined.
The greatest thing about the SLO is the fact you can treble boost the high gain channel and still roll down the volume knob and get almost clean that sounds amazing. Gary Moore, Blues Alive, start of separate ways….wow!
Glad you mentioned this performance! And the intro he plays before the band picks up is breathtaking...
mike S shows the benefit of pure R+D not constrained a small budget . Really pure science in the truest sense . Luck in building some thing other than you drawn that worked . Then a good promoter after a product is made . A rare gift of doing pure research . It is good to see Mike was rewarded for his work .
I do wonder how many amp techs like Mike S there were in the 80s, modding and building amps, who came up with something equally novel and unique but we never heard of because they never built something for someone famous?
Warren De Martini, Mattias Jabs, Adrian Vandenberg, Steve Lukather, Vivian Campbell, and CC DeVille are no brainers to me. They all have a taste for a certain sound that would draw them to Soldano. Surprised George Lynch wasn't in the first 50, that guy is crazy about gear.
Excellent mixing job! I love how you can hear the distinction between the rhythm and lead guitars and all that space in the middle of the bass and drums. Insightful information about the origins of soldano too. This is one of the main channels I always get excited about when I see that a new video has been uploaded. Thank you Rhett for what you do!
4:06 That list of buyers is insane. So many important guitarist from the 80’s… Whitford, Lukather, Nova, Campbell, Knopfler, Matthias Jabs, Kortchmar, Frampton, Hoey, Landau.. and that’s just within the first 100 amps. Even guitar and electronics builders like Suhr and TC Electronics are on the list.
SLO 30 owner here, and it is by far my #1 amp! I live on the crunch channel boosted with a pedal into a 2x12! When I bought it the guy ringing me up at the shop said another guy who worked there was going to be bummed, since it was the only one they had, and he loved playing thru it!!
I really appreciate how you made a sponsored video educational rather than just an advert. Not many UA-camrs can do that.
What a great video. Man you really put the work in and it was worth it. Especially how you leveraged your personal network to get more value to the audience. Bravo.
The slo is my favorite amp I’ve owned so far. My current rig is 2 slo30’s in stereo. I blame Rabea for that. Lol
man I bet thats incredible!
Daaamn! That's a nice rig!
In the live video for the song "I think I love you too much" at the Knebworth festival in 1990, you can see 3 Soldano's behind Knopfler, Clapton and Phil Palmer. Sounds ace!
Amp sounds killer! I also love how you got both studio legend Tim Pierce and the man himself--Mike Soldano--on to help put things in context. Great vid!
I met Mike in the mid ‘80s when he had a little shop in Hollywood. I brought my Boogie Mark 3 over to compare to his amp. He was very friendly and accommodating. I dialed in his amp for a while and we A/Bed it with my Boogie. I liked his, but as I recall I concluded it could sound very similar to the Boogie (which I loved). Anyway, I didn’t buy his, but it was a good experience. Over the years, I was happy to see his success.
The way you don't play Clapton lines on a chorus flooded strat here is amazing. I could've never done that with the SLO!!! :D
That’s a great amp and a great video Rhett! Thanks to Michael for making it and I can’t wait to see that 30 watt combo version!
What a great video. So cool to hear from the builder too. I hadn’t realized the significance of this amp until now. Nice job 👍
I purchased an SLO 100 last year. No regrets! You did a great job Rhett covering the various tonality of the amp, showing that it's not just a hard rock or metal amp. One of the other amazing things about the 100 is that you really don't have to crank the master volume to get a great sound, but if you do, it remains tight and focused. Shout out to Mr. Pierce, always great hearing from him.
Congrats on that beautiful piece of gear man!!!
The best “Soldano sound” for me is Van Halen’s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. It’s not easy to follow up a Marshall Plexi but Ed sure made his Soldano sound great.
There is an interview where Fluff of Riffs, Beards, and Gear interviews Mike Soldano about how Ed "acquired" his first Soldano amp.
Fascinating stuff.
@@christopherweise438 Gonna have to check it out!
That's what I think of when I hear Soldano. That record sounds like nothing else, it almost doesn't even sound like Ed, at least what we knew of Ed's sound before that record.
@@t3hPoundcake I think Ed got a second wind in the 90s. Between the Soldano and the Music Man guitars, it was magical.
Yeah I remember people losing their minds over Eddie's new Music Man guitar and that it would "change his sound". Turns out it was the Soldano that really made the difference.🤘🤘
I enjoyed this video throughout and the audio sounds great! To my taste especially the telecaster sounds amazing!
The most incredible tone I ever heard was my teachers purple Soldano SLO.
He was an incredible guitarist but the chime and presence.
I was a young player and have never heard anything like it since. I could feel it in my bones.
This is my absolute favorite high gain amp.
Marshall and Mesa Boogie and Engl make some GREAT amps, but to my ear the SLO-100 rules them all.
It's in a class of it's own.
Love to hear the studio guys talk about the history of all this stuff..that rack era is so inspiring as a guitarist, the Wild West of tone chasing..so cool!! As a millennial I’m so jealous..those 80s multi channel rack preamps capture the essence of what’s so great about guitar, super crystalline cleans - the purity of the instrument in parallel to destructive ear piercing high gain..perfection!
Great content Rhett, keep it up! I entered into the sweepstakes, im super interested in that amps course too - hopefully this era will be another 80s style guitar renaissance!
Worked for Mike in Seattle in the early 2000s he was truly a really great guy ! One of my favorite amps was a decatone a masterpiece!
Mahalo!!! Man, that amp sounds so amazing...you are costing me so much money, now I want that amp! I purchased my Divided by 13 AMW 39 because of your visit to Righteous Guitars couple years ago...
Awesome video! So interesting hearing from Tim and Soldano about how it came to be
Rhett wearing INTERVALS merch and demoing a Soldano amp feels so unreal. I love prog metal and while his channel rarely does metal, seeing both of these feels so good!
OMG, this is so cool! What a history lesson! Thank you so much for this
I am a drummer by trade (but I still love your videos btw) and I have recorded with guitarists using many different amps/pedals/preamps ect.... and when I heard the 100 w SLO it blew my mind. Whether its recorded or in the room with it, for my ear, its the best amp around. Great Video!
Amazing high gain, crunch and clean sounds. I got a SLO30 about a year ago and couldn’t be happier with it. I put a Strymon el-Capistan through the fx loop for delay and reverb, plug straight in the front with the guitar and there it is, ‘that’ sound my ears have been trying to find for over 30 years! Couldn’t be happier with it.
Dude I LOVE these “the sound” vids!!! Keep a-rockin’ bro!!!
Great run-through of a classic amp. Digging your Intervals shirt. Aaron Marshall rocks! 🤘
I own the Hod Rod 25 which came out right before Mike retired. It’s design is almost like a mini SLO but came out a few years before the 30. It’s a beast and sounds so good at lower volumes.
I had a hunch that your opening jam was in in open G and then your twice as hard riff confirmed it. Great video! -P
I have one of the Mk 1 versions along with many other Marshalls, Vox, Fender and Boogie amps. It’s true they are incredibly versatile and very special. Of course being a massive fan of Clapton’s 24 Nights album and Gary Moore’s Live Blues I had to have it in ‘Clapton Grey’ which as anyone knows adds even more special sauce to the tone!
SLO30 is my dream amp ATM. Amazed at how SL100 it is as well.
A mind blowing thing - and so much a part of the sounds I was hearing growing up!
Amazing playing on the opening track!
Rhett I really enjoyed that opening jam for a few minutes. Well done.
Legendary for a reason! Killer work my man!
You Rock, love the intro is that a song from your band ?? ( it should be in a record) keep it up man your getting better and better
Truly amazing amps. Love Soldanos. I had for many years a Decatone. Mike truly designed spectacular amps.
That's a great clean tone!
Your Bass playing is really improving too! Good pocket on this!!!
Amplitude 5 has a take on the SLO100 and it has been my go to for most of the album I am currently working on. (if anyone happens to clicks my page it has nothing to do with my beats at all so you won't find anything there)
You really coud make a series of very complete videos about the history of amp, showing the most iconic of each decade. I couldn't find this well done so far.
Really cool story thanks for sharing. I love my SLO 30 with the 2 speaker cab
Was just playing my SLO 100 through my 4x12 Bogner Ubercab this morning and it’s my absolute favorite amp
I did a trial of the plug-in a few weeks ago. Today I bought it. You hadn’t published this video yet, but loved that you said try any of the SLO’s, including the plugin. I’ve bought 2 - exactly 2 - amp plugins. Tone King, which you promoted and this. Thanks! Great video.
You got ink. I want to see it, and hear a brief description 🤙
Lookin' real fresh too.
I can hear the headroom over the intertubes. Well done!
Soldano's amps and preamps are awesome!!! Been a fan for a long time!!!
Easily one of the gnarliest amps ever made. Love its high-gain tones, and the clean is amazing as well. :D
Great playing, great information !
Great video Rhett!
Great review! Thank you!
home run video Rhett - atta boy! Oh and by the way great playin" luv it!
Love this style of video dude!!!
Awesome video Rhett. 🔥
So cool to see a demo of the SLO that isn't just High Gain heaven. This amp has one of the best crunch channels in the business. Thanks for giving it a spotlight.
Nice playing Rhett!
By far favorite Rhett guitar track! Stonesy and vince gill and straight up rock n roll really killed that track brother awesome stuff! I would honestly dig a solo Rhett bootleg!
I always wondered about those amps thank you
Love the jam… excellent as always
That intro song was awesome, great video!
That intro jam. Jeezus. Dude. Amazing.
Now that is an unboxing I can watch!!!😊
I love the series of all these different sounds 🤟😬🤟
New tat looking clean my guy! Another great video!
Never thought I'd see Rhett with a tattoo 😮
Good stuff!, Thanks for the vid!
Never seen one in the flesh, but I really dig the Neural DSP plug.
Love the Intervals shirt. One of my fave guitarists of all time!!
Great opening lick! Great tone!
Rhett this amp lives in the Overdrive Master set between 5-6 Pete Thorn has a great video on this.. The Cascading Gain I believe was this amp first to do it. The Neural Plugin I own is great as well. Great Production man.....Vids are great.
You sound great with the Soldano. I would dare say best so far.
Definitely my bucket list amplifier!! Thanks for the opportunity Rhett!!
Another great video man. It’d be cool if you did a video on classic basses and bass amps that had a huge impact on rock n roll.
Would love to give one of these a try!! Sounds great!!
11:05 Don't forget the pedal too! Yeah it won't be quite the same, but you certainly get the essence of what it's all about. Been loving it for low to medium gain over high gain :)
That opening track is a great example of your style. Defined, southern, tight.
Pretty interesting ✌️. Good job Rhett.
It’s simply one of the greatest amps ever made. Period.
Bruh. GREAT video !🇨🇦
Such a great sound! 🎸🎸
In the late '80s there was also Andy Marshall in Seattle with THD and Gerald Weber in Texas starting Kendrick amps, very much boutique builders.
Sounds so beautiful.
Love the Tele sound in the opening jam!
