I remember reading an interview with the producer - he talked about how hard it was to make music on a 16-bit system like this. The Genesis didn't even have filters! Yet listen to what's going on here: there's ping-pong echos, trance gates, (fake) filter sweeps - all stuff you'd expect from dance music, and this was a video game in 1992! Back then to make good game music you had to be a great composer AND a tech wiz.
Yup, I feel that required ingenuity has long been forgotten and swept away, now everything is premade and easy to configure, the subtlety in this composer's technique is mind blowing. Same with the guy who composed for Donkey kong Country

Yuzo should remake this Soundtrack with totays hardware. With modern sythneseizers. But also follow his original vision he had in mind back then and not copy modern trends of todays music.

Imagine you're a US teenager these days going crazy about 'EDM' and then playing this game on an ancient console from the early 90s and hearing what is basically low sample rate versions of the stuff still being played in clubs. It's pretty crazy.
Probably! I got this game for free for "not crying" after having my ear stitched back together after smacking the table, slipping up on puppy piss first thing in the morning when I was 8 years old. The OST stood out to me even then as a genuine classic and I didn't really like "music", hehe

Without a doubt. Especially for brawlers. The soundtrack of this game makes the entire experience of moving across town and fighting like an epic Western or hard-boiled detective story. Like something legendary. Everything else is just average compared to Streets of Rage
For Halloween I dressed up as that guy with the green shirt holding the bat, the clothes and bat were the easiest to obtain, it took a while to make the DON'T WALK mask.
What always tripped me out about this cover is the bald guy on the left. I always saw the legs of the guy that Blaze is leg-sweeping as the bald guy's legs when I was a kid, and even now I still kinda do it despite being able to see his real legs behind Blaze and Punk guy. But still, just look at it. If you're not paying close enough attention that big muscular bald guy has like super skinny legs in black jeans and work boots, just kinda sitting against the wall.

I think it was because Streets of Rage 2 was probably the pinnacle of the side-scroller beat'em up game. The jump in quality from Double Dragon or Battle Toads to the Streets of Rage games was absolutely massive. Better graphics, more moves, better audio quality and better soundtracks. Maybe it is my nostalgia speaking, but there was nothing to not like about this game.
Bojan Land, even those countless deaths were enjoyable in their own twisted way :P Part of me longs for the good old days where video games were still insanely difficult haha
@Bojan Land I showed SoR to my 9 years old nephew and he can't stop playing (he has PS4 and PC gamer in his home). SOR is one of the best games ever, period.
SoR2. The best video game soundtrack ever made or one of the very best, still haven't decided. EASILY in the top 5. EASILY. Without even blinking. A modern masterpiece. Also, one of the best 2d games ever made. A true classic. It brings so many memories from my childhood. A gamer since the 80's and a big sega (old sega) fan. Mind you, nothing, i repeat, nothing from VG music compares to VG music from the 80 and 90's. Look at this, a game from 93 that people now listen to its music which was made on a "primitive" soundcard. This is why this is a masterpiece. That is why for example, classical music will always be relevant and loved.
Definitely the best ever for me, almost every single track is a banger. I've heard all kinds of remixes of its OST and they're good but just lack the rawness of that Mega Drive sound. Nothing can touch this version of Expander for absolute panic techno carnage. Fun fact: my wife and I DJ'd back-to-back at our wedding and i finished off with the Streets of Rage Remake version of Go Straight 😁

Seriously, this is some amateur shit, man. The sign is apparently a few feet ahead and 10-12 feet in the air (otherwise that guy would never fit under it), yet it's casting a shadow on his torso as if it's connected to the building. Awful.
He looks like he has a sub-30 IQ. And just where is Blaze supposed to be? Is she doing a flying side kick? If so, since she's behind Axel and there is about 4-5 feet between him and Max, judging by her placement and the shadows beneath her, she must be about ten inches off the ground.
This and Sonic the Hedgehog were the games i played the most on the sega genesis. Echo the dolphin was a great game too. I had to borrow that one though and could never finish it.
this is why Streets of Rage will always be my favorite beat em up series. The music is top fucking notch. Final Fight, although very good, doesn't even compare to me.
I wont ever forget this game ever. My Favorite Was Blaze. I love her special moves. Alex's was awesome too. I still play this game and i cant ever get enough of the nonstop fights and the bosses battles :D. ( this will always be my number one game in my book besides Mortal Kombat (series), and final Fantasy 8)

awesome game soundtrack to streets of rage game trilogy. this one is my favourite of the 3 classic games. and the best side scrolling beat em up ever in my opinion. for the genesis a classic.
As the first game I ever finished on my own, with no external help whatsoever, this game and the soundtrack hold a very special place in my heart. Under Logic, Slow Moon, Never Return Alive, and Revenge of Mr. X still blow my mind that they were on Genesis/Megadrive hardware. Then again, it was the musical genius Yuzo Koshiro who made them after all.
This is the best game OST ever period. Better than KOF 1996, Nights Into Dreams, Castlevania IV, Killer Instinct, Gran Turismo... this is the best ever no question possible.

Definitely one of the greatest video game soundtracks of the 90s, and a bona fide high quality dance music record in and of itself. Koshiro mashes up so many electronic sub-genres of the time, in a way I've never heard done since. Fucking genius.
This music is still amazing, and this game is still incredibly fun with or without friends. Much better with a friend though naturally. The Streets Of Rage fan Remake brought me back here... and I'll be back!

Yuzo koshiro actually created tools for his music on the genesis and supernes. That is why when you compare them to other soundtracks of the time, the quality itself is better.

Developed a strange hardware problem I couldn't track down, even after replacing multiple parts. It gradually became less stable over time, crashing and having strange video problems.
***** I have a VA6 but it's not quite the same. I do want to replace it with another VA3 someday at least for more recordings. Right now I do all my Genesis gaming on a Model 2.
***** I'm not entirely sure myself, but I think that all versions without the "High Definition Graphics" are later board revisions than VA3 and also have TMSS (the 'produced by or under license' screen). Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Under Logic, Slow Moon, Never Return Alive, and Revenge of Mr. X still blow my mind that they were on Genesis/Megadrive hardware. Then again, it was the musical genius Yuzo Koshiro who made them after all.
This is the best game OST ever period. Better than KOF 1996, Nights Into Dreams, Castlevania IV, Killer Instinct, Gran Turismo... this is the best ever no question possible.
Sometimes I would turn this game on JUST to listen to the music. Thank you Yuzo Koshiro! Well done sir.

Best videogame soundtrack EVER
Definitely one of the greatest video game soundtracks of the 90s, and a bona fide high quality dance music record in and of itself. Koshiro mashes up so many electronic sub-genres of the time, in a way I've never heard done since. Fucking genius.
Sounds even better with bass boost stereo headphones. I swear I used to play this game on a mono crt tv I had in my room as kid.
This music is still amazing, and this game is still incredibly fun with or without friends. Much better with a friend though naturally. The Streets Of Rage fan Remake brought me back here... and

MrEasybitch I was 10/11 when my brother borrowed this from a friend of his, and I was hooked to SOR1, didnt even know SOR2 was out already! My mind was blownnn I eventually bought it from that same friend :P.

It was composed using then outdated NEC PC-8801 hardware alongside Koshiro's own audio programming language. According to Koshiro: "For Bare Knuckle I used the PC88 and an original programming language I developed myself. The original was called MML, Music Macro Language. It's based on NEC's BASIC program, but I modified it heavily. It was more a BASIC-style language at first, but I modified it to be something more like Assembly. I called it Music Love'. I used it for all the Bare Knuckle Games."[3]
The soundtrack was influenced by electronic dance music, specifically house, techno, hardcore techno,[4] and breakbeat.[5] The soundtrack for Streets of Rage 2 is considered "revolutionary" and ahead of its time,[6][7] for its "blend of swaggering house synths," "dirty" electro-funk and "trancey electronic textures that would feel as comfortable in a nightclub as a video game."[6]

Yuzo koshiro actually created tools for his music on the genesis and supernes. That is why when you compare them to other soundtracks of the time, the quality itself is better.

Developed a strange hardware problem I couldn't track down, even after replacing multiple parts. It gradually became less stable over time, crashing and having strange video problems.
***** I have a VA6 but it's not quite the same. I do want to replace it with another VA3 someday at least for more recordings. Right now I do all my Genesis gaming on a Model 2.
***** I'm not entirely sure myself, but I think that all versions without the "High Definition Graphics" are later board revisions than VA3 and also have TMSS (the 'produced by or under license' screen). Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
