Well it wasn’t made on a 16 but cartridge, it was recorded first on real instruments, like the Roland SR 909 and then converted into the Genesis’ sound engine, this is a gross over simplification, but you get the gist. They did however use some of the Genesis’ backwards compatible master system sound chips to kind of cheat their way into giving them more sound channels for extra effects

@@jeffinchi so we think if modern music in a game we think of a recording that is being played back, but the way the Genesis worked (as well as other consoles) was by having the sound chip actually generate the synthesized sound. The composer would have to program code for the console that would basically script out what the FM synth on the soundchip played. So not only did a game's composer have to be a competent musician but they also had to know enough about the consoles infrastructure and software to give it the right commands.

Now adays there are little limitations, and as a result a lot of VGM sounds very much the same and tends to be cranked out rather quickly by comparison.
@@CursedWheelieBinI’m late af to this but it really comes down to the limitations placed on them. Nowadays, if you have the money, you just get an orchestra together and make whatever sound you want. Back then, they could barely use samples in these things, especially the Genesis, which could play PCM but synthesized the rest of its sound by combining waveforms. The SNES required you to record samples for each instrument in a bit-crushed 8-bit format. All of this required creativity and ingenuity to achieve. And as for the SNES, I’d put Plok’s Beach level music to be the SNES equivalent of the SOR soundtrack in that it shows what was ultimately possible with the limited hardware
@@urk5204In Cyberpunk 2077 the music when you're near enemies seamlessly mixes in from the city atmosphere, then when the battle intensifies a more intense version of the theme mixes in, again seamlessly. The theme that plays depends on which part of the map you're in and who you're fighting, each gang/area has their own theme and they're all related to the overall theme of the game. It's so smooth you don't consciously notice it straight away, it just feels like a natural thing that should be there. Additionally, the soundscape in that game contains TVs playing music, devices and vehicles and people all making sounds, and each one has a source in a 3D space so the levels accurately change while you move around, without any cracks or pops ever. It's an incredible piece of technical work with a lot of artistry as well.
Makes me shed a tear man I spent so many hours in my room just getting away from all the drama I was lonesome games like this made my nerdy side keep me at peace and at chill damn time just flew by....SEGA FOREVER.
Probably the best damn Shinobi game. I wonder how many in the audience knew the song, though? Their enthusiasm seemed to drop when it was playing, like they didn't know what it was from.
The earlier games are more conventionally catchy, but I think SOR3 has passed into the modern era the best. Those songs sound like they could have been composed yesterday.

Almost feeling sick with nostalgia, what a privilege for the people there to hear Yuzo do this kind of thing live, especially with the two Shinobi tracks, damn man
damn....I played S.O.R starting in 1997 when I was just 7 years old. Good old days. Just listening to this really made me tear my eye a lot. Being reminded of those days is not because of just a video game, but because of the memories you built in your youth and things you really had to grow with. Spectacular reminder really.
I was 20 then, you was a bit late to the game.. I have been playing anything to do with SEGA from the early part of the 80's... Man I feel old. Still a fan today.. SEGA and people like Yuzo Koshiro who made some of the most memorable music for SEGA..
That made me tear up. I remember getting SoR when it first came out. I was like 13. That song made me pumped to want to save the city. Its amazing that so many people still love SoR so many years later.
I’ve been playing Streets of Rage since I was 8 y.o. and I still listen to the music until today in 41 y.o.😂Just a few days ago for the first time ever, Yuzo Koshiro visited my country for Indonesia Games Expo and he played his retro musics on the first day! Streets of Rage 1-4, Shinobi’s Revenge, and Castlevania! I also got his signature and pictured together with this legend 😭♥️🔥 my heart…!!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO 🙌🏽♥️🔥
As a kid who played the trilogy in the 90s, this music has always been a huge inspiration. The soundtracks of 1 and 2 were always a favorite, but 3's always struck me as odd, and almost grating to the ears. 20+ years later as an adult and having spent lots of time during those years learning how to play my favorite songs from 1 and 2 on piano/keyboard, and having gotten a DAW to try my hand at recreating those favorites, it's reminding me just how much i love those classics. And seeing the masters themselves mix and play these, has given me a new appreciation for SoR3's music. As someone getting into composition, arrangement, and production, I can also say that I have newfound respect for the soundtrack of SoR3, because it just goes to show how ahead of the times they were This is awesome
This musics return me the best time of my life! No cell-phones, no tablets, no internet.. just the true real world and lot of an enjoyable life! Thank you to help engrave in my path with this masterpiece musics and memories!
The man is a magician to get this music out of the Genesis. If you didn't know what you were doing like so many developers back then, you'd end up with music that sounded like it was being played by a flatulist, but if you're a genius like Koshiro then you ended up with brilliance like the SoR soundtracks. Some of the best music ever made, all from a 16-bit video game console! Amazing!
Listening to this again for probably the 100th time and the beginning still puts me instantly into tears! The Streets of Rage soundtracks will always be complete masterpieces! Takes me back to when my life was happy and meaningful!
Streets of Rage and The Revenge of Shinobi music was present during my childhood until the teenage days. It's like a gift to have s performance like that do many years before. Thanks Mr Koshiro and team!
It's amazing that 16-bit console games from over 30 years ago gave us a bgm superior to contemporary high-performance arcade games. SOR will remain forever as the game series with the best bgm of all time.
I thought I was the only one who loved this music, Glad to know we have a family, (Tears flowing) Played when I was 10, now am 30, remember each and every beat of the music. brought now PS 4 version Sega retro classics. Can't get enough. Time flies and am crying listening to this.
In may 2019, my best friend and I offered ourselves a trip to Tokyo, as a tribute to our early days culture. I booked the last day at the 30th floor of Park Hotel near Hama-Rikyu Gardens, which offered an incredible view on Tokyo roofs. We turned off room lamps and stared at the red city lights. They were slowly blinking at the sky like multiple waypoints on a bed of white traffic lights and shop neons. Then I said to my friend : "wait, we need something". Then I hit play on this very Live Concert, first notes hit our spines with chills. The scenery looked exactly like the intro of Streets of Rage, while we were looking at Tokyo without a word. It was a perfect moment.
I know the general feeling is that the music in SoR3 isn't as good as in the previous games but 12:19 The Poets II is right up there with the best in the series for me. And if you've not heard "Ending" from SoR3 that is also one of the best that is worth a listen
To this day i have still never heard anything as adrenaline pumping as a streets of rage soundtrack and the track from SOR2 Spin On The Bridge is one of the best tracks i have ever heard in any game that i have ever played, Koshiro and Kawashira are definitely legends of gaming music so cool seeing this just wish i was there.
I've been listening to this sound track since this dropped in the 90's, even in the car! People use to pull up at red lights, like what's that?!?! I be like you don't know Yozo?! Lol

i once had recorded all the ost via the game's play through with a mini tape recorder. and because of years passing i've lost those recording tape, and now it is nice to got a chance to listening again with more modern sound and knowing those who composed the soundtrack. an awesome reminiscent.
In general, the SNES had what we considered really crazy good music at the time. Unfortunately the SNES's music has not aged well, since a lot of it was generic wavetable stuff, usually with too many effects layered on (the reverb effect is ridiculous now). The Genesis / MD had a killer FM chip, and combined with the Z80 and PSG, it could pump out sick music, as Koshiro clearly shows. However it was also harder to get "good" music out of it, so you ended up with a lot of really good or really bad music on the platform. Basically the SNES gave you a lot of mediocre music, and the Genesis / MD could give you better results, but it was harder work. Fortunately, unlike the SNES, the FM stuff aged REALLY well.
The 10 year old me loved 'Dreamer' and all these years later that hasn't changed, thank you Mr. Koshiro & Mr. Kawashima :) Mr. Koshiro also did the sound effects for the X68000 version of Space Harrier in 1987.

Cyberpunk 2077 has some pretty amazing original music

Legendary.

Definitely Gold
This is why music is important to a game. Fans will remember it, and it'll keep composers with a long lasting career!
I would've lost my shit at that point lol

Makes me shed a tear man I spent so many hours in my room just getting away from all the drama I was lonesome games like this made my nerdy side keep me at peace and at chill damn time just flew by....SEGA FOREVER.

Dude, ending on Shinobi was such a FANTASTIC surprise! I LOVE IT!
Probably the best damn Shinobi game. I wonder how many in the audience knew the song, though? Their enthusiasm seemed to drop when it was playing, like they didn't know what it was from.
Kezef the Dead I prefer Shinobi 3, but the Revenge of Shinobi was no joke either.
Yeahh JUSTICE!

Love how the crowd cheered when Dub Slash kicked in. Awesome to see SOR3’s soundtrack get its well deserved dues
The earlier games are more conventionally catchy, but I think SOR3 has passed into the modern era the best. Those songs sound like they could have been composed yesterday.

They should do a streets of rage cos play rave tour!
Street of rage 2 ‘s music already sounds so much like night club music that this ‘concert’ just feels like a very natural club music scene
Yea.
it literally was nightclub music. They Sampled House and Dance Songs.

god hear you man
sadly, he’s not
XTheJenovaProjectX he technically neither confirmed nor denied that he is involved in a tweet. So he may or may not be doing the music, time will tell.

Almost feeling sick with nostalgia, what a privilege for the people there to hear Yuzo do this kind of thing live, especially with the two Shinobi tracks, damn man
This makes me want to walk down my street and start kicking some ass
Punching a trash can & finding meat on a plate underneath, eating it, & ironically becoming more healthy for doing so

HELL YEAH 👍💯💯💯
This crowd is nowhere near as hype as they should be for this masterpiece.
It's fine, because we can listen the music better this way.
They probably want to listen to the music
Did you hear at like, 15:00 during “Stage 1”? They lost their shit! They KNOW it and LOVE it and are clapping along!
At least they attended
Because let the music do the hyping!
damn....I played S.O.R starting in 1997 when I was just 7 years old.
Fjg
there is some male sweat droping from my eyes as well
Same for me man, I was 8 back then, playing SOR on the sega of my back then best friend. Days after days. Good memories
A compilation of masterpieces
Holy shit..... Just wow. I would’ve lost it if I was there. Streets 2 OST is unreal.

SoR musics made me love electronic music. It was one of my first contact with this type of music (in my early teens. born in '82).
I blame this game and soundtrack for my life-long love for Synth music. THANK YOU.
That made me tear up. I remember getting SoR when it first came out. I was like 13. That song made me pumped to want to save the city. Its amazing that so many people still love SoR so many years later.
This is a masterpiece of electronic music.
"They are willing to risk everything. Even their lives on the streets of rage."
This sounds epic! The Streets of Rage 2 tracks are such a nostalgic throwback
As someone getting into composition, arrangement, and production, I can also say that I have newfound respect for the soundtrack of SoR3, because it just goes to show how ahead of the times they were
This is awesome
This musics return me the best time of my life! No cell-phones, no tablets, no internet.. just the true real world and lot of an enjoyable life! Thank you to help engrave in my path with this masterpiece musics and memories!
Man why at 52:33 I tear up. Seeing people appreciate something that resonated with me so much from my childhood really brought me joy.
The crowd hype when Fighting in the Streets kicks in 🙌🏻
This is so ICONIC! Respect to the people who could enjoy this LIVE!!
Go Straight was my favorite as a kid. I listen to it if i don't fill like going to work. To motivate me to Go Straight and get things done...
Fav track from BK 2/SOR 2
my fav is wave 131
Best soundtrack ever.
Amazing!
The gameplay was grear too! Alot like Final fight but thats ok.
Technosoft also did some amazing work: the OSTs of Thunder Force 3 and 4, for example.
Listening to this again for probably the 100th time and the beginning still puts me instantly into tears! The Streets of Rage soundtracks will always be complete masterpieces! Takes me back to when my life was happy and meaningful!
SOR music is a genre of its own and I love it so much
WHY THIS MASTERPIECE DON'T HAVE 1 MILLION OF VIEWS?
Words... I’m looking for words. My 10 year old me just wants to say thank you and he loves you!! My present me says the same.

Streets of Rage and The Revenge of Shinobi music was present during my childhood until the teenage days. It's like a gift to have s performance like that do many years before. Thanks Mr Koshiro and team!
The theme that played when you saved Adam in Streets of Rage 2 always put me close to tears as a kid. Love this!

It's amazing that 16-bit console games from over 30 years ago gave us a bgm superior to contemporary high-performance arcade games. SOR will remain forever as the game series with the best bgm of all time.
don't forget chrono trigger :)
Props to the people who recorded and mixed this. This is high-quality work.
DAMN. WISH I WAS THERE FOR IT WITH Y'ALL 😢
SOR3 soundtrack is super elite and is the highest point of the series.
YES !!!
Absolutely love this, timeless music. Just played Streets Of Rage 4 for first time and immediately needed to listen to the classics ;-)
Welcome. Btw there is a retro soundtrack option 😉 go nuts!!!
And totally agree, love this
Some of the new tracks are bangers. My fave is the "do joe".
So good to be alive in these times. This is so awesome I can't even believe it.

SOR 3 is dog shit. It's like nails on a chalkboard
@@fade2black001 yet it fits perfectly in a DJ set
Streets of Rage 3’s soundtrack was so far ahead of its time. I thinks it sounds awesome today, especially live.
I know the general feeling is that the music in SoR3 isn't as good as in the previous games but 12:19 The Poets II is right up there with the best in the series for me. And if you've not heard "Ending" from SoR3 that is also one of the best that is worth a listen
SoR1 music already pushed the genesis sound chip to its limit. SoR3 OST was just too strong for the YM/PSG chips.
they recorded the whole album on dated tech and made the best soundtrack of a decade. absolute legend.
Don't ever call the Genesis dated.
Ever.
A heartbeat is a good thing to have....

Great tune but as it happens, one of those Motohiro Kawashima's tunes.
Both mick gordon and yuzo koshiro are video game music gods
It’s funny to see how intently and respectfully the audience is given the roots of this kind of music.
People rave about the Super Nintendo having better sounding music than Sega but the Super Nintendo never had anything as amazing like this.
BlownMacTruck to me there’s only a few Super Nintendo games that have great music, castlevania 4 and final fight 2
Yozo did super adventure Island for snes!! Dope Too, But still can't touch this!!
vgfather this soundtrack is untouchable and it’s timeless!!!
I worship this OST but there's equally classic SNES music, starting with pretty much everything Rare released on the system.
I'm time traveling 30 years back to my sega genesis days of playing this game
I'm so glad that, finally, we have a proper, good quality and lengthy recording of this on YT. Thank you so much!
The 10 year old me loved 'Dreamer' and all these years later that hasn't changed, thank you Mr. Koshiro & Mr. Kawashima :)
