When I came to the US, I craved seafood a lot since there wasn't as much of the variety I was used to in my childhood country. I specifically craved steamed fish dishes. They can be slathered in chili and spices, or in a refreshing mint sauce. So I always get excited watching you guys fishing and preparing different types of fish. The char is mellow and fatty so you might have enjoyed it salted and grilled instead. It has delicate skin that can crisp up beautifully, so if you ever want to give it another go you can try that. It's similar to salmon and trout so it can also be baked in a soy honey marinade.
I was thinking the same. The recipes I've seen look like it can take a lot of strong flavors. I saw a spinach butter sauce, lots of big flavours like chimichurri, teriyaki, and one with chorizo!
Char, also known as 'brook trout' is among some of the lowest table quality meat i know of, they decimate cutthroat populations, i would ordinarily consider them noxious weeds but they have a slightly above average sport quality and they can reach up to 30 pounds. Of course i'm biased, i don't like much freshwater fish at all but i get crazy cravings for seafood like you. i like cod and halibut and and crab and stuff quite a bit.
That coffee is actually from the Canadian Rockies and the three sisters is a mountain range outside of Canmore, Alberta! Super cool they have that up in Alaska!
In 1967-1968 I arrived to Canada, & went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, I was invited by an old French Canadian friend for an Ice Fishing trip in Winnipeg Lake. We catched too many big white fish, they were delicious to eat. But I hated that day, because I was frozed to the point that I can't open my hands flat. My Ears got frozen & very painful, I didn't believe when I returnd home, and I never repeat such an experience again. I even got angry, just watching you drilling holes inside the icing snow. You opened an old wond ha ha ha. Love your videos.
Congratulations you ! I love fresh fish . I often bake it and wrap with lettuce and fresh herb and dipping sauce . Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all the best wishes ! Blessing all !
Glad you each caught an Arctic Char. Both fish looked great. Eric's frozen mustache brought back memories of the three winters I spent in Alaska. Great memories! Thanks for taking us along on this fishing adventure.
That took me back as well. In my late teens to early twenties, I would go on my long runs in the Anchorage area. 5-10 miles, at 10-20 below zero. When I got back my hair and eyelashes were completely frosted up. What a magical time and place. c1970s.
Amazing to see you trying out Kicking Horse Coffee! You guys are correct, it is a Canadian coffee brand created in Invermere, BC. 😊 The Three Sisters is named after a sequence of mountain peaks in Canmore, Alberta, three hours from my home town! It’s awesome to feel connected in little ways. 😊 Great video as always!
Hi. I follow your guys. Amazing and different. I love your videos and your guys positive energy. Make my Sunday night relax. My favorites cabin videos. And love your dogs. And the tundra. I have one. 2017 limited. I love it. Thanks for your videos. Merry Christmas. To you guys and your subscribers : R Milan
💚 Wow, seeing that auger drill down through the ice is so cool! I totally understand about not driving your truck out on the ice..I just get nervous about walking on it...Beautiful fish you caught. Congrats on the Arctuc Char 💚
I will be interested in ice fishing and fishing in general when my local grocery no longer has its multiple varieties of fish from all over the world available to me. Cheers!!
Three Sisters for the win! One of the most beautiful areas in Oregon. I love your honesty.. not every fish is going to be to your liking, but good food is good food!👍
So glad you both got arctic char!! Have wonderful Xmas and hope your New Year is everything you hope for. Safe holidays and a peaceful New Year for all your followers.
Wow 2 great looking fish Happy to see that you both got one each man I love the way you cooked them looks so tasty Now I will have to run out and by some fish so My Lovely wife can cook them for me. Thanks for the great clips keep them coming they are Awesome I enjoy watching them.God Bless you both.
With all the fish you catch, you should freeze all the bones and when you have a bunch, cook ‘em up in a pot and use the “broth” for fertilizer in your vegetable garden!!!! (Fish emulsion) I have been binge watching all your videos….I soooo love them!!!! Keep them coming👍👍👍👍
That was nice to see what happens under the surface when making the hole. Those fish were long, & pretty. So good to see you both. Have a really good week.
Love the little fishing pole. The fish had such beautiful colors. Both of you looked so cold. Wishing the best for you both for the holiday season. I am sure the dogs were nice and warm staying at home.
It's so good to see you guys out fishing and I hope everything's going well with your transition into your new Homestead Merry Christmas to both of you
I do like your photography. I also like that you both work very hard to achieve your goals. This video shows that you try to balance the work with some leisure. That says you are probably happier than most.
I have worn the white cold weather boots that Eric is wearing, and nothing compares to those for keeping your feet warm. I was in the army reserves and a few years in the regular army. We trained in the army reserves many times in Alaska mostly around Fairbanks area.
Thank you nice trip. Ariel has some warm looking clothes. Reminds me of what the army wore back in the 60’s. Glad y’all got out to do something fun and filling. Your Alaskan ice fishing skills have sure improved from your first excursion, congrats.
Hello Eric and Ariel, love your fishing videos. You guys usually catch nice size fish. I love the variety of baits that you try out. Stay warm, Grace from KY
Yeah that shot at the beginning, of you drilling the hole was AMAZING! I love the variety of your adventures. I’m glad you both caught a Char. I love that you show us how you cook them in the same video. Awesome, awesome video. Merry Christmas!
Glad that you were able to catch your lunch. I understand the excitement about catching fish. We were out in a boat fishing on a river years ago and I had hooked a good size bream and when it got off my hook I came so close to jumping into the river after that joker!!! Ohh yes I wanted to make sure that I made mention of the coffee brewing and cooking the fish!! Thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you. I hope that y'all have a merry Christmas. I pray for y'all for your safety and your health. Take care Eric and Ariel ❤️✝️
You ALMOST make me wanna go try ice fishing. But then I see Eric’s mustache and remember that feeling of nose hairs freezing and how cold that is… nope on a rope!! I settle into being excited about learning to fish in the summer. And then… there it is! Ariel’s face so happy and excited! Thank you for showing me all the wonderful things this beautiful state has to offer. I’ve grown up not doing these types of things. Now in my late 40’s I’m becoming interested. It has felt intimidating which adds to anxiety and I often end up not trying… believing I wasn’t capable. You guys have a way of making it seem less intimidating. And Ariel when I see excitement like that on your face … I’m now getting excited about what was once “an intimidating chore” I must learn. You’ve also help me get past my black thumb and I’ve actually been trying gardening. I’m still not great but each year is better. You guys have helped me not be so critical of myself and stop believing this lie in my head that it has to be perfect the first attempt. You’ve helped me to have the attitude that life is a playground … so go play in it! Get curious! Seriously … thank you for that. Awesome trick with the camera through the ice! So much fun.
Oh, I miss fishing for Char! I love it all! Grayling have a more grainy texture to them. They're good eating too. My old mantra for winter/spring was: "Never be the first one ON to the ice, nor the last one OFF of the ice.
They are beautiful fish! Love the excitement of catching a new species. Yes Kicking Horse is from the Canadian Rockies-Yeah. Seasons Greetings to you both
Hi, a tip from a girl from the western coast of Norway. If you want the fish to firm up, you coat it with a light layer of salt, put in a bowl with a little plate in the bottom, so the salty liquid gets away from the fish. Put the fish in the frigde overnight covered with a loose lid, or as much as three days. This will bring out the flavour in the fish, and it makes it firmer and more flaky. This also makes most of the muddy flavour that some fish from freshwater has go away. Either I take the salted fish and cook it in water with no salt, or I wash the salt off and fry it with only a little salt and pepper and maybe other spices to taste. This works for fish both from salt water and fresh water. It it is also a nice method to make the fish last some days when you catch more than you can use straight away. Thank you for your wonderful videos, and have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year from us in Sweden!
Thanks for sharing your journey and y’all’s adventurous nature and cooking your catch for us. I’m wishing for a Merry Christmas and the best New Year ever, much love to y’all. ❤️🎄👏❄️ Be well and safe and warm.
Kicking horse. Aaaayyy 😍😍😍 I tried their kick ass and horse power 454 recently. They both are soo good. So far horse power 454 is my fav, I prefer 12oz black and it was sooo smooth and very balanced. No bitter and no burnt taste. Kick ass is same taste but it’s little stronger in flavour.
That shot of the auger through the ice was AMAZING!!!!❤
My thoughts as well, super cool!
I came to the comment section just because of that shot, great work! Merry Christmas.
Absolutely. I'd love to see more of those. Maybe of the fish being brought up.
Yes it sure was amazing, beautiful
Watched it over and over lol so cool
Seriously, that opening ice drilling shot was AWESOME!
I've been sick (cancer) and I was just thinking how much I would like to see a fishing episode with y'all! Takes my mind off of stuff. Thank you.
Hi Ann,
So, how are you now? Are you getting the standard treatment?
Sorry to hear you are sick.
Prayers for you.

I sure appreciate your excitement and enthusiasm! No matter if you're fishing or gardening or building something, or cooking!

I know I’m not the first, but I have to say that the shot of the ice drilling was so beautiful 🧊

I agree with the others, great videography! Always informative and entertaining. Thank you for sharing your lives with us.
One of my favorite past times is ice fishing. When I drive out onto the ice and you can hear the ice cracking I always say it making thicker ice.
💚 Wow, seeing that auger drill down through the ice is so cool! I totally understand about not driving your truck out on the ice..I just get nervous about walking on it...Beautiful fish you caught. Congrats on the Arctuc Char 💚

Eric measures the French press coffee so precisely, just like I do. Lol
Love the little fishing pole. The fish had such beautiful colors. Both of you looked so cold. Wishing the best for you both for the holiday season. I am sure the dogs were nice and warm staying at home.

The whole video was fun - but that ending shot! Hysterical! Crazy mad - I'm-going-to-get-you - look from Eric! :)
"Let 'em know we're here" said no fisherman ever - *proceeds to catch the target species* ! Eric cracks me up dude
