  • Ice fishing for a burbot in Yakutia - the coldest inhabited place in the world!
One of my favourite winter activities - ice fishing! Very exciting and also difficult because of much work. In this video I show how we ice fish in Yakutia.
Fishing for a burbot is legal in Yakutia, but no more than 5 tails per day. It was my first time when we caught a such a big burbot. The most precious part of a burbot is its liver - absolute delicacy.

I love this! I live on a smaller lake near Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories in Canada, and I fish the same fish and I get my water the same way, with my suv on a ice road. We don’t get burbot quite as big, but I love to get burbot in the winter, the liver is especially tasty. Right now the ice is about 3 feet thick.
I keep a line in the lake, but i have a 6 inch piece of styrofoam insulation, about 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 feet, that is covered with plywood. I keep it on top of the hole, and pile snow on top so it stays insulated . Then the next day, i dig it up and the hole is still open. Also, I’ve never seen anyone anchor the fish line like that, only for nets. Makes sense for burbot. When I’m just baiting the fish, I just use a line going straight down from a stick on top of the hole. But if it freezes over you have to be careful and you can’t use the auger just the spear.
The fish here are: burbot, trout, pike, white fish, inconnu, pickerel, and arctic grayling.

More people fish in North America so we don't give the fish a chance to grow. I can remember seeing huge silver salmon in the PNW but with the growth in population and increased fishing they get smaller every year.

Burbot is so delicious! Here in Finland we also fish it and eat it right now in the winter season. It's easier to catch burbot in the winter because during the summer it dwells in the bottom of the lake and in the winter it's near the surface.

What an exhilarating and unique look at ice fishing for giant burbot in the extreme climate of Yakutia! This video truly highlighted the tenacity and resourcefulness required to pursue this traditional practice in one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.
Right from the start, I was completely absorbed watching the meticulous process of cutting through thick layers of ice, setting up the intricate fishing system, and patiently awaiting a bite - all while enduring brutally frigid temperatures. The visuals of the vast frozen landscapes were simply breathtaking.
I have profound respect for the skills and perseverance on display. Clearly this type of subsistence fishing is deeply woven into the cultural fabric, passed down over generations. Witnessing the pure joy on the faces when that massive burbot was finally landed really drove home the stakes and rewards.
But beyond the actual fishing action, I appreciated the insights into how this activity carries such importance for maintaining traditions, providing food sources, and bringing communities together during the harsh Yakutian winters. The glimpses into prepping and cooking the prized burbot liver were really interesting as well.
Videos like this open my eyes to unique ways of life I'd never even imagined existed. While the environments seem unimaginably forbidding to an outsider like me, you capture the warmth and richness of cultures adapted to thrive in harmony with their extreme conditions. An utterly captivating educational experience!

I've caught burbot here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan but never that big, only 16 inches. When removing the hook their tail would wrap around your wrist like a snake. Thank you for the wonderful video, Ossie

My earlier reply seems to have been blocked because of the included Wikipedia link. I posted before that I was wondering why there are so many Turkish users here, and whether that was because of the video of two Turkish guests sampling Sakha dishes, but I've since figured it out: I've only learned today that Sakha people are Turkic too. There is a Wikipedia article called "Turkic peoples" that includes a map, but I won't make the mistake of posting that link again. Instead, I have a question to you all: Can Turkish people understand the Sakha language? Can Sakha people understand Turkish? Is there enough linguistic similarity for mutual intelligibility?

@@bshshshsh9570 So, generally not mutually intelligible, but there are commonalities? Are there cultural exchange efforts between Yakutia and Turkey? If so, then it must be quite the contrast to go from the Med to Siberia and vice versa. Thanks for your replies. It's interesting to learn about this.
