    Though most people associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans, MOBILE, ALABAMA, began holding the festival in 1703, 15 years BEFORE it started in Louisiana. Based on a French Catholic tradition, the celebration is now a city-wide holiday in Mobile, where even schools close down to celebrate.

      Shelly Bee we (NOLA) close down as well. The kids get a week off. Colleges & jobs get 2-3 days typically.

      Mobile's "colony" was the Capital of French Louisiana (1703) before New Orleans was founded (1718) but, Mobile was relocated in the year 1711 from it's original location (upriver from the Mobile river) to it's present-day location. Mobile DIDN'T become a part of Alabama (State) until the year 1819.

      I prefer Mardi Gras over Christmas. I will not celebrate someone who doesn't look like me.

    Soooo beautiful. You're amazing. Where do the costumes go after the celebration? How are they stored? Are they worn again? Thanks for sharing.

    Mobilians love to talk about Mobile having the original Mardi Gras but watch how they use New Orleans-style music, culture and second lines to celebrate. So basically the originator is now the imitation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      How can it be imitation when Mobile literally had the same exact French dudes colonizing the area? We are Sister Cities. Mobile culture and NOLA culture are a LOT alike, you just don’t hear about it because our tourism board most likely sucks and has old white dudes still running it. Also, some French and Spanish stayed while a bunch followed the “leaders” to Louisiana (in today’s terms of state lines) where they stayed. That’s all. I think if one wants to learn and understand the history of NOLA, one has to start with Mobile. Our cultures are very much intertwined and a part of each other and I absolutely love it.

    • @TravelWitMi
      @TravelWitMi 5 років тому +4

      I was thinking the same thing. That Port City song came from a guy from Mobile that attended college in Louisiana. So you know where he got that second line music from. But nobody does Mardi Gras better than Louisiana. The lady said Mardi Gras is a big deal like a family gathering which is same in Louisiana. New Orleans Mardi Gras is mostly for tourists. Next thing you know they going to start imitating the accent and the food.

      King Kendrick Mardi Gras was founded in Alabama and celebrated yearsssss before it became a thing in Louisiana. So no, New Orleans is not the “real” Mardi Gras.

      I bet this won't be heavily disliked. You misunderstand why those videos get downvotes. It's not because viewers are upset at the sight of black people, just tired of the race baiting propaganda.

    • @MsEliteForever
      @MsEliteForever 6 років тому +7

      ww People sharing how they honestly feel in a racist society that doesn't truly care for them is propaganda?
      Kinda sad these people can't freely speak their minds, hearts, feelings and pain.
      Meanwhile I watch a video of open kkk members and they get tons of thumbs up... Explain that. 😝

      Jambalaya is based off of West African Jollof rice and it's creole food, not cajun food.
      Lol every music genre in the south was created by African-Americans. White Americans have no true music genre native to their ethnicity. Not even country and bluegrass, as all of the original artist took from African American blues and folk musicians.
