If you are in New Orleans, the Backstreet Cultural Museum is an important place to visit to learn more about this unique culture. I am surprised it was not included in this piece. The founder is a wondeful man and a visionary.

It dates back to the 1800s and many of the people who participate are Afro-indigenous themselves, including myself and my family. Please do your research. We have also been celebrated and thanked by Indigenous groups across the US for honoring their ancestors and showing the world our strength and survival despite colonialism.
