Making It In “Nollywood,” Nigeria's Booming Film Business | VICE on HBO

  • Nigeria's film industry in booming. Nollywood has quickly grown into a $3 billion dollar industry that is creating a new generation of Nigerian filmmakers.
Nollywood began with the 1992 dramatic thriller, “Living in Bondage.“ The film reveals a story about a man who is haunted by his wife’s ghost after sacrificing her to a cult.
The VHS masterpiece inspired an entire movement of DIY filmmaking in Nigeria, and these unique narratives that are authentic to Nigeria have made Nollywood highly popular across Africa and its diaspora audience.
Nollywood produces thousands of movies per year, most of them on shoestring budgets and made within days. These movies have a widespread reach and are entertaining audiences in rural and urban settings alike - from makeshift street barbershops and beauty salons to local cinemas and online streaming services like iROKOtv and even Netflix.
This shift to digital is re-defining the existing Nollywood model while creating a new generation of Nigerian filmmakers, who are making high-production value films for the big screen and digital streaming platforms.
VICE's Thomas Morton traveled to Nigeria to spotlight the world’s second largest film industry as he attempts to become a Nollywood actor himself.

It's the standard latin pronunciation. My best guess is that it started being pronounced leigos at some time probably during british colonial rule and the same pronunciation shift did not occur in all dialects of english, that's why the two different pronunciations exist.

They need to control their population. Vasectomy and birth contraceptives has to be introduced in their country. I say this as a fellow African myself.

    • @mplsridah
      @mplsridah 6 років тому +4

      MAMA AFRICA,
You can't just blame the northerners for the breeding the biggest population in Africa. It shows your bias against Muslims. Contraceptives are against Christianity too.
No religion should be blamed for overbreeding is my point. They need to come with a solution to substantially reduce birth rate. They need to have a plan put regardless of their beliefs. Most Africans do not just Nigeria.

The continent needs empowerment not pills. stop parroting of western media and eugenics thinking. 1/3 of the world's population is going to be African in coming decades. that manpower can be instrumental if applied right way. the west knows this and try to thin us out with drug pills.

That is question we are asking the leaders everyday. to put the manpower to work. there is no such thing as a lazy African when money is involved. that is the empowerment we are fighting for. not freaking drug pills and shit.

I think Bollywood has matured now and the quality of movies that are coming out now is far better compared to the movies of 90s and early 2000s. Many Bollywood movies of 90s were utter crap.
Bollywood has been popular in many countries for years. Bollywood has now entered Chinese market too.
And I know one day Nollywood will reach the same kind of popularity as Bollywood. Best of Luck from an INDIAN.

Very interesting documentary. Love you Vice.I think for the first time, I have come to see the tremendous amount of work put into making these movies. There's a sect of Nigerians (usually very educated and westernized; I am one) that poke fun at these guys for their lapses. But it does not take away the amount of work they do. So good job guys. And remember Nollywood, we can shine the light on our stories by documenting what goes into production. I mean, look at all the work. Who knew? I am really inspired by this.

They just need to stop stealing their background music from old anime series. My brother was watching one of this one day and next minute I hear Washu's heartbreak from Tenchi Muyo playing.
